title Evolution of CAAD Teaching Methods
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2007.393
source Predicting the Future [25th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 978-0-9541183-6-5] Frankfurt am Main (Germany) 26-29 September 2007, pp. 393-399
summary In this paper evolution of CAAD teaching at architectural faculties will be presented. The CAAD will be considered as one of the components of skills and knowledge needed to support Design Studio. The paper is focused on the question “How architectural design may be combined with CAD teaching?” Formulation of this question results from opinion that position of CAAD in teaching of architectural design curriculum is different than other disciplines being taught at architectural schools. Introduction of CAAD to teaching schedules unquestionably and explicitly uncovered the need for changes within the whole schedule of study. Although great number of computer equipment is used, the students are still being taught as in the XIX century. In terms of achieved results it proves ineffective. Analyses have shown that evolution of teaching methods may be divided into four stages: software teaching, “personal involvement”, “replacement” and integration.

title Agent-Based Social Pedestrian Simulation for the Validation of Urban Planning Recommendations
source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 332-336
summary The goal of this project is a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that shape a city with a focus on pedestrian flow. Pedestrian flow reveals the use of space, the capacity and use of transportation and has an impact on the health of people. Movement patterns of pedestrians are a topic in many related fields like transportation planning, computer graphics and sociology. This project augments the simulation of pedestrian decision processes by taking into account the preferences for surrounding factors like additional points of interests and how pedestrians interact along their path with other pedestrians in a social manner. The goal of this project is to analyse urban planning configurations and to give designers and decision makers a tool to measure the amount of people walking and therefore define the health of a society, finding places of social interaction and improving social coherence in neighbourhoods.

title Big Data for Urban Design - The impact of centrality measures on business success
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2016.2.457
source Herneoja, Aulikki; Toni Österlund and Piia Markkanen (eds.), Complexity & Simplicity - Proceedings of the 34th eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland, 22-26 August 2016, pp. 457-462
summary This paper investigates the role of spatial parameters in relation to the economic dynamic embedded in the urban fabric. The key element explored in this study is the role of the urban configuration and accessibility on the success of different business sectors in Switzerland. The underlying hypothesis is that economic markets are constant forces of change influencing the development of cities and functions on all scales. Markets are institutions that reduce people's choices based on a myriad of factors to a single number, the price. Accessibility is a resource for each business that yields multiple values of benefits and transactions in terms of economic properties. This project explores the interaction of multiple measures of accessibility, calculated by Space Syntax analysis, with the success of different markets represented by employment by business sector. 828548 business locations and 44 spatial measures were used to derive associations between them. The results show that the measure of 'Choice' correlates highly for smaller radii and 'Integration' for larger radii with the total number of jobs. The result also shows each sector has a specific set of accessibility measures that allows them to thrive.

title Parametric modeling as a supporting tool for teaching in a technical drawing course
source SIGraDi 2020 [Proceedings of the 24th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISSN: 2318-6968] Online Conference 18 - 20 November 2020, pp. 783-790
summary Despite the complexity of parametric modeling, used potentially to generate non-standard geometries, this paper presents a simple approach to adopt this tool as a support for teaching technical drawing contents. This experimental study was applied in a technical and high school education context, focusing on three subjects: 1) irregular polyhedra, 2) points in descriptive geometry, and 3) line in descriptive geometry. Exercises were implemented before and after the parametric experience with students, and the answers to both scenarios were compared. The results addressed to the efficiency of parametric modeling as a supporting tool in the teaching/learning process.

title The Impact of Three Cognitive Functions on Digital Media Aided Architectural Ideation: A Proposed Investigation
source T. Tidafi and T. Dorta (eds) Joining Languages Cultures and Visions: CAADFutures 2009 CD-Rom
summary From a cognitivist perspective the architectural design seen as an iterative process of search for an “acceptable” solution from initial design assumptions (Simon 1974) requires representation. These representation which may be internal (mental/cognitive activities) and external (sketches 3D models) are essential to any creative act and in all phases of the design process since they constitute a projection of the architect’s thought and know-how.

summary When an Information Laboratory (IL) is designed there are some questions that need to be answered: they concern, for example, the equipment (hardware, operation systems, software...), methodologies (self-education, aided practice, integration between traditional methodologies and new equipment ...) and disciplinary contents to tranfert into a Computer Aided Education laboratory. In consideration of the fact that it appears absolutely necessary to assume equipment and organization together a research is being developed about both the logistic configuration of educational environments and the methodology for education by information medium.

doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2016.343
source Living Systems and Micro-Utopias: Towards Continuous Designing, Proceedings of the 21st International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2016) / Melbourne 30 March–2 April 2016, pp. 343-352
summary This study investigates the relationships of field observa- tion, multi-agent simulation and space-syntax theory in spatial config- uration for developing design strategy for a case study, a tourist hub area in Musi Riverside, Palembang. Having such potential advantage and to tackle existing social and urban issues, our study developed a design approach based on multi-agent simulation enhanced by space syntax theory. The goal of this study is a deep understanding of multi agent simulation through mechanism of validation using field obser- vation and by taking into account the existing urban features. The purpose is to develop design strategy of pedestrian-centric urban space to be functioned as a tourist hub based on computational modelling. Following the paths result of pedestrian flow by multi-agents simula- tion, we elaborated the analysis of facility programming by means of Space Syntax theory. It shows the ranking of facility programs based on their relative connectivity and integration. By merging this result, it assembles programs and their circulation spaces by means of compu- tational simulation. Experimenting in both fields show a novel ap- proach for pedestrian-centric design in urban scale, particularly since behavioural models rarely used in early stage of design process. It shows that multi-agent simulation should be coupled with field obser- vation.

title A Decision Support System (DSS) for Forward Housing Planning
source Timmermans, Harry (Ed.), Fourth Design and Decision Support Systems in Architecture and Urban Planning Maastricht, the Netherlands), ISBN 90-6814-081-7, July 26-29, 1998
summary This paper presents a specification of a Local Housing Strategy Decision Support System (LHS-DSS) (Conceptual and Physical model design). Emphasis throughout the design process is laid on the techniques that provide housing planners with accurate rapid assistance during the preparation process of local housing strategy. Relevant knowledge (descriptive, procedural, reasoning) and data about each step of the process, options for each situation as it arises, and a record of decisions made with underlying reasons are provided to system users. Three main components are identified to shape up the LHS-DSS: the language system for addressing housing problems; knowledge system which is responsible for gathering and accumulating the housing knowledge required; and problem processing system (an inquiry system) which produces suitable and effective recommendations to support the strategy preparation process.

title A Fuzzy-Based Approach for Evaluating Existing Spatial Layout Configurations
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2019.2.035
source Sousa, JP, Xavier, JP and Castro Henriques, G (eds.), Architecture in the Age of the 4th Industrial Revolution - Proceedings of the 37th eCAADe and 23rd SIGraDi Conference - Volume 2, University of Porto, Porto, Portugal, 11-13 September 2019, pp. 35-44
summary This paper proposes a fuzzy-based approach for the automated evaluation of spatial layout configurations. Our objective is to evaluate soft and interdependent design qualities (such as connectedness, enclosure, spaciousness, continuity, adjacency, etc.), to satisfy multiple and mutually inclusive criteria, and to account for all potential and logical solutions without discarding preferable, likely or even less likely possible solutions. Using fuzzyTECH, a fuzzy logic software development tool, we devise all possible spatial relation inputs affecting physical and non-physical outputs for a given space using descriptive rule blocks. We implement this fuzzy logic system on an existing residential space to evaluate different layout alternatives. We define all linguistic input variables, output variables, and fuzzy sets, and present space-space relations using membership functions. We use the resulting database of fuzzy agents to evaluate the design of the existing residential spaces.

title Building Information Modeling and Interoperability
source SIGraDi 2009 - Proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 16-18, 2009
summary Interoperability is the ability of two or more systems to exchange information. It is one of the pillars of BIM because the information contained in a BIM model needs to be exchanged to be useful. IFC is cited as the best option for achieving interoperability in Construction but, although several applications have been certified to be IFC-compliant, flawed exchanges are too common yet. Behind IFC, some other less known standards play an important role to make BIM interoperability a reality. Among them are IDM, MVD and IFD. This paper will briefly show how these standards take part in data exchange and discuss the reasons why AEC interoperability is still such an elusive goal.

title Computational Design Approach for Applying Neuro-Architecture Principles in Healthcare Facilities
source Hybrid Spaces of the Metaverse - Architecture in the Age of the Metaverse: Opportunities and Potentials [10th ASCAAD Conference Proceedings] Debbieh (Lebanon) [Virtual Conference] 12-13 October 2022, pp. 331-347
summary Neuroscience tools’ advancements have paved the way for neuroscience and architecture collaboration, spawning "Neuro-architecture." Neuro-architecture studies in various settings have been tentatively translated into design principles to improve the mood, perception, and satisfaction of healthcare facility users, as well as patient wellbeing and recovery rates. Integrating such principles into computational design methodologies should benefit users’ mental health and reduce the gap between computational design and human mental needs. The research was conducted in two phases: in the first phase, typologies used in evidence-based design research (EBD) were applied in order to determine neuro-architecture design principles for the interior environment of healthcare facilities. In the second phase, the research employed space syntax analysis to evaluate the incorporation of neuro-architecture principles into healthcare facility interiors. The method visualises and evaluates spatial qualities that reflect the application of planning and navigation neuro-interior principles for the inpatient ward of a healthcare facility.

title Deceptive Landscape Installation - Algorithmic patterning strategies for a small pavilion
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2014.2.071
source Thompson, Emine Mine (ed.), Fusion - Proceedings of the 32nd eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, Department of Architecture and Built Environment, Faculty of Engineering and Environment, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, UK, 10-12 September 2014, pp. 71-79
summary This paper reflects a collaborative, research led design project, aiming to explore the potentials offered by incorporating parametric / generative tools and performative lighting simulation software in order to design and fabricate a small pavilion for the School of Architecture. The Deceptive Landscape pavilion was designed in the framework of a masters level, research led, and collaborative design studio. During its intense 12 weeks schedule, student teams were asked to explore and apply generative / parametric tools such as Rhino and Grasshopper, in order to design and later construct a small pavilion, with a theme of their choice. In addition, each team was asked to optimise their design proposal by embedding environmental software plug-ins (e.g. DIVA for Rhino) in their design process, thereby aiming to re-inform their parametric models and set performance targets. Finally each team was expected to propose a file to factory fabrication technique, following all constrains of a limited, predetermined budget. The most convincing and consistent proposal, was then chosen for fabrication. The finalised project serves as verification of the effectiveness of the design system and teaching methods used.

summary This paper addresses the use of BIM for code verification and automatic validation of the Architectural Design of Airports (ADA). In Brazil, the evaluation and approval of ADA are carried out by INFRAERO. Currently, designs are evaluated manually, resulting in errors and long evaluation time. To deal with this problem, a conceptual framework for automated ADA assessment with Code Checking is proposed. The method used was Design Science Research, with the proposal of an artifact. The partial results show the importance of establishing protocols for BIM modeling, based on IFC as an important tool for automated assessment with code checking.

summary Data-driven urban design processes consist of iterative actions of many stakeholders, which require digital participatory approaches for collecting data from a high number of participants to make informed decisions. It is important to evaluate such processes to justify the necessary costs and efforts while continuously improving digital participation. Nevertheless, such evaluation remains a challenge due to the involvement of different stakeholders including participants, designers, and policymakers in decision-making processes, and the lack of a systematic method to generalize participation outputs that are mostly situated and context based. By addressing this challenge, this paper introduces a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) based framework to measure the effectiveness and quality of digital participation systematically and quantitatively. To achieve such evaluation, we conducted a digital participation experiment and investigated such processes with the help of participants, designers, and policymakers from Singapore and Hamburg. By formulating this framework, we aim to reveal perspectives of different stakeholders towards digital participation and enable the evaluation and comparison of digital participation processes based on the introduced digital participation criteria.

title Visualization of users' requirements: Introduction of the Evaluation Grid Method
source Timmermans, Harry (Ed.), Third Design and Decision Support Systems in Architecture and Urban Planning - Part one: Architecture Proceedings (Spa, Belgium), August 18-21, 1996
summary During the last decade, a new type of approaches have emerged in Japanese environmental psychology. These approaches have characteristics that they are aiming to clarify users' requirements for the environment as the design questions to be solved, compared with the traditional approaches aiming to clarify the environment-human relationship to provide actual design solutions. As an example of these new approaches, the Evaluation Grid Method (EGM), a semi-structured interview method developed by the author based on Kelly's Personal Construct Theory is introduced. In the EGM, by asking the reasons of why an environment is more preferable to others recurrently, together with leading questions (laddering), each participant's requirements to the environment are elicited structurally as well as phenomenologically. Also by cumulating each participant's requirements, the extensive structure of the requirements to the environment embraced by people is produced. In this paper, a detailed procedure and the outcome of the EGM are presented on the elicitation of workers' requirements for the office environment. Also recent applied examples where the EGM research was applied as an design aid in architectural as well as industrial field will be introduced.

summary Recent developments in digital technologies and smart materials have created new opportunities and are suggesting significant changes in the way we design and build architecture. Traditionally, however, there has always been a gap between the new technologies and their applications into other areas. Even though, most technological innovations hold the promise to transform the building industry and the architecture within, and although, there have been some limited attempts in this area recently; to date architecture has failed to utilize the vast amount of accumulated technological knowledge and innovations to significantly transform the industry. Consequently, the applications of new technologies to architecture remain remote and inadequate. Although, there have been some adaptations in this area recently, the improvements in architecture reflect only incremental progress, not the significant discoveries needed to transform the industry.
