summary Throughout the world, global warming has been considered a severe problem, which has led to efforts being made for technical development to reduce greenhouse gases in the building sector. As more attention has been paid to energy consumption by residential housing in the building sector, policies and studies on domestic dwellings tend to focus on quality improvement and energy-efficient housing development rather than quantitative housing supply. Yet, policies and guidelines considering residential energy efficiency are inclined to focus on performance and lack in integrated consideration in connection with design. Hence, it seems necessary to compare and analyze design and energy efficiency and to study correlations between housing design and energy. Lately, BIM technology has been used in buildings domestically and proved reliable in respect of its features that enable overall comparison and prediction of housing design, performance and efficiency. The present study is to use the BIM technology to analyze energy consumption and the standard drawing schemes for rural areas to find ways to improve efficient design in singles housing sector and to suggest how to take advantage of buffer zones and how to improve housing design in favor of energy efficiency.

summary Land suitability analysis typically involves the assessment of the suitability of land units without knowing the future spatial distribution of land use. Traditional planning techniques have used “algebraic equations” to express land suitability as a weighted function of suitability scores across multiple criteria. However, the existing multi-criteria evaluation methods do not systematically account for uncertainty about the land use in adjacent and other cells. This paper proposes an alternative approach to land suitability analysis that does address the problem of uncertainty. In particular, Bayesian decision networks are suggested as a means of knowledge representation for agents in a multi-agent land use simulation system. Bayesian decision networks model the uncertainty in terms of probabilities specified in the network representing the expertise of specialists with respect to specific land uses. This paper discusses the approach and illustrates its use in the context of a retail agent.

summary Physarum Polycephalum is a widespread eukaryotic microbe capable of producing effective networks between food particles to solve spatial planning problems. This paper investigates a previous algorithm for simulating Physarum Polycephalum. An open-source tool named Physarealm is developed for simulation in Rhino's graphical algorithm editor, Grasshopper. The tool adopts a previous stigmergic multi-agent algorithm for simulation and expands its boundary into three dimensions. In addition, this tool adds some custom rules, thus giving the designer more creative control over the produced results. Two research projects have applied this tool in the design process. The first project mainly takes advantage of the tool's path-planning ability, while the second one utilizes its aesthetic values, demonstrating the potential of the tool for further applications.

summary In recent years, more and more large-scale terminal buildings have emerged. In the design and construction of the terminal, how to increase the non-aeronautical revenue of the terminal has become one of the difficulties and priorities. The commercial vitality is one of the important factors influencing non-aeronautical revenue of the terminal. There is a correlation between passenger flows and commercial space vitality. So it is necessary to analyze the impact of pedestrian flows on commercial space vitality. The commercial space vitality can be evaluated by the vision dwell time on the shop surfaces. This paper focused on the relationship between passenger flows and commercial space vitality at the terminal. We modeled and simulated the domestic mixed-flow hall of Baiyun airport terminal 2 in Massmotion. After the pedestrian 3D vision field simulation, Vision Time Maps were exported to assess the commercial space vitality. After comparing the survey results with simulation results, we can conclude that the mixing of multiple pedestrian flows can improve the commercial space vitality of the airport terminal.

summary This paper describes the development of a tool, now available for use over the Internet, for the preliminary design of a class of fabric structures. This tool is based on the so-called grid method in which vertical equilibrium over a grid in the horizontal plane is used to determine shape for a cable net. It can subsequently be combined with other analysis routines to produce a detailed structural design.

summary Recent developments in digital fabrication have made increasingly intelligent use of machine visioning and 3D scanning. These technologies enable ever-higher resolution digital models of physical material, and present opportunities for physical material to gain agency in the design process. Digital design workflows using such technologies require ever-greater computing power as the resolution of digitized models increases, and high-fidelity 3D scanning systems become cost-prohibitive, creating obstacles to widespread use. Twinned assemblage uses consumer-grade photogrammetry software, lowering the cost of equipment required, and presents a series of distillation methods that strategically reduce the fidelity of data digitally describing a physical object. Distillation methods discussed include reducing a mesh to a low-poly geometry, identifying the location and orientation of an object's largest faces, and creating 2D sections, among others. These methods can be designed intentionally to extract or highlight certain qualities in digital models, that in turn inform aggregation strategies generated through computational simulation. This paper presents several examples of such aggregations in a variety of materials, conveying benefits and challenges of the process. Such methods present opportunities for granting agency to physical materials in the design process, and for the democratized use of digitizing technologies.

summary The rapid growth of medium and large cities has led to an increasing demand for innovative and intelligent solutions for urban design and infrastructure. The use of City Information Modeling (CIM) and parametric design software has been one of the implemented solutions, allowing for greater agility in the process and integration with databases to recreate a digital urban structure and simulate complex scenarios. However, many of these tools remain relatively unknown among urban designers, with plenty of potential to be explored. This research aimed to identify the recent practices in the use of algorithmic-parametric design at the urban scale and in CIM project management, and explore their applications through a systematic review of the literature based on scientific articles. The review resulted 37 articles that were selected for a detailed search in the abstracts, methodologies, results, and discussions. The most frequently employed tools are related to urban energy efficiency, traffic planning and walkability, urban morphology analysis, and building typologies and density. Algorithmic-parametric design applications and plug-ins were identified to assist mainly in flow analysis, performance, comfort, and city modeling. Additionally, 23 statistical and geographic database formats were identified that generate volumes and land and mass spaces or perform performance analysis data processing.

summary Many domains present themselves as mappings between two classes of spaces: decision spaces and performance spaces. All design domains can be represented in this manner where the designer takes decisions which manifest themselves as performances in the designed artifact. Learning in these domains can take account of the structural characteristics of the spaces and of the mappings. This paper describes a system, PARE, which learns in the domain of decisions and performances by making use of the characteristics of a particular structuring concept known as 'Pareto optimality.' Much is known about the concept and its features which are used as hypotheses. If the hypotheses succeed then learning takes place by specializing the hypotheses' characteristics. Characterizations of Pareto optimality are described and the feature extraction process shown. The feature extraction process utilizes fuzzy pattern matching. An example of the system, written in ConSUN workstations, is presented from the domain of fenestration design

summary The hierarchical structure afforded by linguistic systems, together with inter-element relationships, is suggested as a means of representing interpretations of generative design processes. The utility of relational descriptions for describing spatial arrangements and performing geometric transformations is discussed. Tree systems are shown to be a useful representation for relational descriptions, by making explicit the possible hierarchical organizations, and a search mechanism is introduced to look for 'interesting' design interpretations. A method for inferring tree automata from positive sample sets is employed to infer relational grammars. Issues in the representation and the grammatical inference method are discussed in the light of examples from the domain of spatial configuration

Suppose there was a new way to communicate with our machines that would allow design and other subtle relationships to be measured, compared and perceived using the design intent and viewers interpretations themselves as descriptions? In the future, using a system like this will eventually create so many designs, interpretations, patterns and spaces to choose from the questions become: how would design be perceived within these virtual spaces; and how might our aesthetics change due to this new dialogue with machines?

summary Considering the energy effi ciency and comfort levels of dwellings, stricter legislation will be applied towards 2020. To reach these requirements, an insight into the energy effi ciency becomes essential from the start of a design. However, the uptake of building simulation tools by architects and students to evaluate the energy performance during the architectural design process remains very limited, mainly due to the complexity of these tools. Therefore, this research aims at early design support through an easy-to-use application adapted to the modelling logic of a designer. As architects often use simple CAAD design tools for design exploration, a prototype was established in Google SketchUp. In this context, the paper presents the development of a support tool for low-energy dwellings in early design phases, allowing designers to quickly assess the thermal comfort and energy performance of early design alternatives.

summary The interest in earthbag dome construction (also known as sandbag, superadobe or superblock construction) is increasing as a world consciousness develops to achieve the planet’s equilibrium for sustainable living. The main objective of this research is to develop a parametric tool to help architects modeling virtual earthbag domes from ideation to construction phase. This challenge has been addressed by adopting an experimental methodology that explores parametric generative design with the use of visual programming language (VPL). In this paper we present the development of a tool for the ideation level including features that allow for the calculation of material quantification. The usability of the tool was validated by earthbag constructors and architects.

title The Concept of Type in Architecture: An Inquiry into the Nature of Architectural Form

summary The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the meaning of the concept of Type in the field of architectural theory. Even though the use of the term type by architectural theorists is a relatively recent phenomenon, which can be traced back to Quatremère de Quincy in the early nineteenth century, the idea of Type, as opposed to the explicit use of this term by theorists, has pervaded much of architectural theory ever since Vitruvius. In fact, many theorists have been concerned with issues which convey a notion of Type, like the origins of architectural form, the systematization of architectural knowledge and the understanding of the process of creativity. A basic premise of this work is that to understand the true significance of the idea of Type in architecture, it is necessary to overcome certain traditional views that have associated Type with the work of specific authors at a given time like, for example, Quatremère de Quincy and Semper in the nineteenth century, or Rossi in the twentieth. Only a comprehensive study of the most relevant ideas formulated in the field of architectural theory -beginning with Vitruvius and finishing with contemporary design methodologists- can reveal the essential meaning, or meanings, of Type. This work attempts to provide such a comprehensive study. To derive the fundamental meanings of the concept of Type from the body of the architectural tradition, it has been necessary to proceed, simultaneously, along two different lines: one diachronic, the other synchronic. From a diachronic point of view, the aim has been to trace the evolution of the theories of Type from one author to another, for example from Laugier to Quatremère de Quincy. From a synchronic point of view, the goal has been to disclose the common ideas that lie behind theories formulated at different times, for instance, between Vitruvius' theory of the origins of architectural form and the artistic theory developed after the advent of Gestalt psychology. In recent times, the term type has been used by architectural writers as synonymous with typology. Unfortunately, establishing this identity between type and typology has served to undermine some of the essential meanings conveyed by Type. In the overall context of the architectural tradition, the idea of Type has much deeper implications than those that are confined to the classification and study of building forms. Type embraces transcendental issues of aesthetic, epistemological and metaphysical character; issues that have to do with the most generic problem of Form. Certainly, the essential meaning of Type is intimately related with the more transcendental problem of Form. To explore the relation between the idea of Type and the historical evolution of architectural form, has also been the purpose of this research. As this work attempts to show, the variety of meanings that Type has adopted through history are inseparably connected to the evolution undergone by architectural form. For that reason, this work, although primarily a study of the concept of Type, it is, at the same time, an investigation on the nature of architectural form.

summary In this paper we present a pedagogic work, carried out in a third year architecture course, focused on the relationship between teaching content and media. The subject-matter of the course is the concept of representation; an eminently philosophical issue which transcends the limits of a particular discipline. The media that have been used are mostly the web, along with other standard programs to process text and images, create models and animations. The core of this research work is the course ‘Sistemas de Representación’, which has taken place for the first time in the academic year 1999/00. The course is structured in six themes, each one standing for a system of representation: TEXT, FIGURE, OBJECT, IMAGE, SPACE and LIGHT. Within every system, a variety of topics dealing with the concept of representation are addressed in an interdisciplinary manner. A web based learning environment named NETWORKING has been created especially for the course. This environment allows students to perform a variety of collaborative works: drawing visual and linguistic relationships, developing further the works of other students, and participating in collective processes of form generation and space perception.
