summary The development of advanced information and telecommunications networks have created new kinds of socioeconomic activities, while changes in values and increases in cultural diversity within cities have made manifest the need for planning schemes based on flexibility and responsiveness to change. In contrast to motorization that completely altered the urban scene, IT has quietly merged into the existing urban structure, causing little change in appearance. Nevertheless, the exponential growth of the Internet and the increase in the use of computers have had profound effects on urban activities. Urban planners have responded by developing supportive tools such as network-based geographic information systems (GIS) as well as online public participation programs (PPP) and other types of groupware. These technologies automate data handling, reduce planning time, and increase the opportunity for public participation. The social life of cities has also been changing.

title Misinformation and entropic acceleration: algorithms’ departure from life

summary While algorithms have become lifelike in their capability to generate original information with large data sets and processing power, they depart from life in their parallel production of misinformation and entropic acceleration. Cell evolution on earth over billions of years has to some extent prophesied the most effective evolutionary paths of digital technology: generating original information from normalization of large number of atoms and random variation through genetic mixing in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Yet, cell evolution seems to operate according to the second law of thermodynamics in which entropy defines life processes. Algorithms have so far not responded to the subversion of life through misinformation and entropic acceleration. If we were to reverse misinformation and entropic acceleration, algorithms must return to life to merge the underlying principles of life on earth with the production of original information. Biology must take precedence over mathematics in our twenty-first century metaphysical formulations and materials production.

summary This research examines students' experimentation skills in the field of digital fabrication for the development of construction joints. The architecture students in charge of the experiment had no previous experience with digital fabrication technologies. However, with specific lessons and the optimization of digital design tools commonly used in their studies, such as CAD software, they were able to achieve results that were useful in understanding the design and production processes of this technology. Ten local FabLabs, maker spaces, and woodworking shops were involved in the manufacturing process. The CNC machines used are those available from the manufacturer partners and represent the most commonly used types: FDM, laser cutter, and miller cutter. The aim of this research is to investigate the accessibility of design and production processes for digital fabrication joints using only the tools that are commonly employed by local manufacturing companies.

title Spatial Decision Support System for Retail Activity

summary This presentation proposes an architecture of Spatial Support System (SDSS) for retail activity. This SDSS is made up of four key modules: data, monitoring, spatial analysis/modelling, and map and report generators. In the data module, spatial shopping data are gathered from Point of Sales (POS) Systems as well as trade area surveys. Two examples will be presented to collect spatial shopping data. One is from an ordinal trade area survey and the other is from point IC cards. The monitoring module can represent retail trade areas as three-dimensional surfaces as well as contour maps by using a colour graphics display after a cartographic analysis which consists of gridding and interpolation of these data. As an application example of monitoring module, retail trade area for a store or a shopping street will be shown as a three-dimensional surface. In addition, themonitoring module can describe a retail structure consisting of the trade area of several retail stores to analyze the spatial competition of them. In the spatial analysis/modelling module, optimization methods search for an optimal location of a new store and an impact analysis assesses the locational impacts of the store upon the existing stores. An optimal location of new supermarket will be solved as an example for this module.

summary This paper explores some of the opportunities offered by computer aided design to architects, interior designers and industrial designers. It differs from much of the research in the field in the sense that, it expands out of the boundaries of the computer screen by making computer generated physical prototypes using several different Rapid Prototyping technologies.This paper surveys the author's work at the Department of Architecture, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and more recently the work of his research team at the School of Design, Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The aim of the research is to explore the designer's advantages and limitations using rule based design and rapid prototyping techniques and searching for novel research questions. For each of the experiments proposed I will describe (1) the set up of the experiment (2) the methodology used to conduct the experiments, (3) highlights its advantages and limitations and (4) proposes further possible research questions. Throughout the paper I will focus especially on the unexpected outcomes.

summary The time in which we live today is marked by quick economic, political, and social changes. We can also add the new development potential of European space, which is not formed only within the borders of EU; their influences are also reaching into neighboring countries and beyond their borders into wider areas. If we summarize the main characteristics of settlement development over the past decade in Slovenia, it is necessary to stress out that those processes were marked by developmental dynamics, which profoundly changed traditional images of the cities and settlements.The most explicit characteristics of the current developmental trends is the strengthening of the centers of economic power - dense city areas, which compete with competitive advantages of their location, with an emphasis on traffic and other infrastructure equipment.

title Benjamin W. Betts and his computable approach towards morphogenesis

summary Morphological theories in architecture are more popular than ever partly due to the rapid developments in computational techniques. This rapid development, however, is more fruitful when it is informed of the philosophical and ethical bases of such techniques. The neglected historical case of Benjamin W. Betts, an architect of the late Victorian Britain, is an early example of the effects of philosophical presuppositions on computable theories of morphogenesis in arts and architecture. The aims of this study are to shed light on his motivations and sources of inspiration, and also to present an algorithm for his procedure. We used the only book available on the Betts’ works in addition to archival materials to conduct the research. Betts was under heavy influence of Idealism and Oriental thought in his symbology and the morphogenetic procedure he designed. The Python/Grasshopper algorithm for Rhino presented in this paper produces two dimensional Betts’ diagrams that can be used as an educational tool or an opportunity of enjoying the beauty of mathematical forms, and the immense variety they offer thanks to parameterization.

summary This research investigates architectural conceptual design and discusses its recent historical, philosophical and theoretical development within the overall architectural design process and attempts to establish an objective definition more tuned to current thinking and advancement in technology. It also evaluates the various traditional and information technology (IT) tools available to the designer and establishes their relationship to the conceptual design process in order to identify if any of these tools, in particular the IT tools, have a role to play in the practice and the enhancement of the conceptual design process. A survey of Scottish practicing architects (small to medium size practices) was undertaken to validate the results of the investigation. The results seem to suggest that IT tools are not essential to the conceptual design process but that they are very well capable of enhancing the creativity and speed of some aspects of it. They also suggest the existence of an inherent resistance amongst Architects / designers to utilising these tools in conceptual design. It is, furthermore, identified that if practitioners were to encompass new working practices and acquire new skills, IT tools could also provide powerful new modes of communication with the client. A correlation between the size of the practice and the degree of exposure and experience of IT tools was also established. To test some of the above findings, a design studio experiment was undertaken where half of the students adopted digital tools, utilising SketchUp software and digital sketchpads, whilst the others adopted traditional tools for the conceptual design part of their projects. No attempt was made to gauge the quality of the actual designs produced. The results indicate that the SketchUp group rated their conceptual design experience higher in terms of efficiency, flexibility and communication. The control group, who had dominantly adopted traditional freehand sketching, were impressed by the outcome from the SketchUp group. All student who answered the questionnaire, both SketchUp and control groups, said they would consider adopting some form of 3D sketching in the future.

It takes two different groups of architectural drawings and compares them. Validation of qualitative shape representation scheme is suggested using statistical methods. By the year 2005 optical fibre will be affordable in the workplace removing the current limitations on bandwidth. The BRICC project recommended more cooperative working. Business, ICS and manufacturing are likely to converge in the future.

The exhibition explores the relationship between architecture, manufacturing techniques and digital technology. The case studies demonstrate the use of digital design to inform the built environment from citywide scale to component assemblies of current and future architecture. The emphasis within the exhibition is on experiential and tactile architecture. The exhibition features an shortlist of projects from international leaders. Each project has been selected for the excellence of the architecture and to illustrate the relevance of wide range of digital fabrication techniques. The exhibition is site specific and the design and content has evolved with each location.

summary In this work we address the fast and economical realization of complex formwork for concrete with the advantage of industrial robot arm. Under economical realization we mean reduction of production time and material effi ciency. The complex form of individual formwork parts can be in our case double curved surface of complex mesh geometry. We propose the fabrication of the formwork by straight or shaped hot wire. We illustrate on several projects different approaches to mould production, where the proposed process demonstrates itself effective. In our approach we deal with the special kinds of modularity and specific symmetry of the formwork.

summary Teaching about cities and planning involves complexities of understanding urban development in space and time, evolution and transformation of cities, urban politics, actors and stakeholders. Delivering efficient ways of teaching, is very important for educators, particularly among lecturers at universities who work with urban planning and design. Games can be used as educational tools and role-playing games can capture the political struggle of different actors and stakeholders involved in planning processes. Games can enable students to experience urban development and take roles of different actors and stakeholders in the planning and development processes and practice the art of negotiations in urban politics. Two educational games were written for the planning courses at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. Since 2011, 17 games were played in different courses. Data from the evaluation forms was collected on 14 games and 277 students answered questions. This paper analyses the evaluation forms and the comments of the students who took part in the games and discusses gaming as an educational tool. The experiences with role-playing planning games are very positive. These ratings occurs consistently in each game that was played with very small variations.
