summary The digital revolution is affecting not only the way we produce drawings, but also the way we think about architecture. Such expressionistic, neo-baroque forms would have been unthinkable without higher technology, which allows for customization at a massive scale. Three dimensional computation extends the architect's range, permitting a wealth of experimentation, any form seems possible, the architecture language, the vocabulary changed, and the way design thinking has various dimensions. Within a short space of time the computer has become a widely accepted feature of architecture, both in the design process and in the everyday operation of buildings, and we are constantly aware that the computer's introductions into architecture will eventually have farreaching consequences. After all, the current revolution is not just about the computer as a tool but about its role and effect on the form of architecture and thinking This paper will discuss what form will architecture take in the next years? Will every future problem be anticipated, developing more efficient solutions? Will projects reflect meaningful architecture, for dynamic and contemplative environments and for aesthetic quality? And, how we will stand this unavoidable futurism?

title Architectural Representation Software: a Design Tool

summary In the last decades, design processes have been approached with absolutely new representation techniques: digital media. This new tool was naturally incorporated to the architectural task not only in universities but also in Architectural offices. However, their evolution and utilization have been so sudden that their impact on the design object could not be properly assessed. Simply they stated to be used by translating analogical representation techniques into the digital media. In the Latin American context, in which the media interaction paradigm has not yet been completely established within universities and teachers, this work presents an exploration of the underlying ideas contained in the architectural representation software, as well as a series of exercises intended to teach how to use digital media as a design tool, instead of teaching how to use them as a mere representation tool.

summary In this paper we present a methodology developed to access to Cultural Heritage information using digital 3d reality-based models as graphic interfaces. The case studies presented belong to the wide repertoire of mosaics of Ravenna, ranging from the byzantine to the modern ones. One of the most peculiar characteristics of mosaics that often limits their digital survey is their multi-scale complexity; nevertheless their models could be used in 3d information systems, for digital exhibitions, for reconstruction aims and to document their conservation conditions in order to conduct restoration interventions in digital environments aiming at speeding and performing more reliable evaluations.

summary This paper explores the characteristics of painting developed during the Nineteenth century, and specifically updates the use of matter and brushing techniques invented by a group of painters called “Impressionists”. In that period, impressionist artists began to brush “tempera” on a canvas as a malleable matter able to emphasize an accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities.  Thick brush strokes left on the painted surface revealed the master’ gesture and completely changed the way to represent reality. Stimulated by the recent advancements in digital technologies, this paper looks for methodologies able to transfer impressionistic painterly innovation into a contemporary digital 3D environment and investigates how paint behaves when morphing from a photorealistic depiction of Nature to a disfigured one. In particular, reality-based 3D information, first frozen by a laser scanner into a digital geometry, slowly melts into liquid paint on a colour palette. While colours mix, the geometrical matter that constitutes the photorealistic scanned reality and its details disappear into primitive paint clog that are mixed and brushed into new colours and shapes able to create novel atmospheric and chromatic effects.

summary This study departs from the data exploration of the people dynamics within a university campus to foster solutions of sustainable mobility and environmental regeneration. The research has dealt with a critical challenge of guaranteeing the privacy of individuals' registration data, following the recommendations listed in the foreseen General Data Protection Law. While ensuring anonymity, the work aims to assess the contribution of databases as infrastructures that can convey relevant knowledge beyond scientific research and to guide public management to the trends advocated for the future of universities.

title Campus regenerative design supported by university Wi-Fi connections

summary A 60-year-old Brazilian university campus reflects its development actions throughout history. The degradation of its water streams and automobiles prioritization has significantly impacted the ecosystems’ resilience and the university’s activities. This article explores data analytics and visualization of Wi-Fi authentication processes, whose data have been stored in the last 10 years. This noteworthy connections database is a powerful tool, still overlooked due to the remarkable risks for users’ privacy. Brazil has followed 2018 European regulations to protect data privacy, when working with personal data. Therefore, we present an anonymization process that prevents one to identify and distinguish a subject within a set of subjects of the database. Three studies illustrate our examination of data potential to understand the university’s dynamics. These inquiries present relevant contributions to the process of planning and implementing campus green areas at the rivers’ edges, pedestrian and cycle paths, and places to facilitate interdisciplinary encounters.

summary This article presents the result of the activities carried out for the discipline of the program Master in Design and Technology (UFRGS), Digital Manufacturing Process as a Tool for Project. It aimed to develop a product based on digital manufacturing process. With this purpose, was designed a package for the transport of apples. In order to achieve the goal the generation of alternatives was conducted through a game and Sketch Creative Brainstorming, followed by research on the product life cycle. Subsequently, was used parametric modeling software for the package design. The use of three-dimensional modeling software Rhinoceros together with the plug-in Grasshopper allowed the construction of three-dimensional parametric models. As a result, we obtained the creation of a product that can be adapted to other fruits, avoiding rework, and run through rapid prototyping, this being a consequence of the facilities of adoption of digital fabrication.

summary Morphfaux is an applied research project that revisits the virtually lost craft of plaster to explore its potential for producing thickened architectural environments through the use of contemporary digital technology. The research challenges the flatness of modern, standardized dry wall construction and explores plaster’s malleability as a material that can be applied thick and thin, finished to appear smooth or textured, and tooled while liquid or cured. If the invention of industrialized modern building products such as drywall led to the demise of the plasterer as a tradesperson, our research seeks alliances between the abilities of the human hand and those of automation. By transforming historic methods using new robotic tools, Morphfaux has broadened the possibilities of architectural plaster. While our research has produced forms not possible by human skill alone, it also clearly illustrates a symbiotic relationship between the human body and robotic machines where human dexterity and robotic precision are choreographed in the production of innovative plastering techniques.

summary In this paper, we outline a computational framework to capture an intricate relationship between tangible and intangible cultural heritage - architecture and the multiple narratives pertaining to it, to unfold multiple histories as a means for a deeper, more comprehensive preservation of contextual heritage. Deploying a set of digital and computational tools, we present a cross-disciplinary method to produce environments infused with history, and at times overlapping narratives. The framework presented here aims to combine text and spatial data, using both Natural Language Processing and Semantic Segmentation, towards integrating seemingly divided epistemologies of heritage. We ask how we can use computation to enrich current cultural practices and what is at stake in deploying such tools. To explore these questions, we discuss a case study of Wadi Salib, an historical and conflicted neighbourhood in Haifa, Israel, and attempt to assess our framework's ability to render a historical tour through this multi-layered site. Finally, the paper identifies several pitfalls and key challenges for future research.

In particular, this research undertakes a pilot study (working team: Ashik Vaskor Mannan, Masrur Mamun Mithun, Lau Hon Yee Damien) on pattern and behavior in nature and implements the findings in to an architectural problem. The Initial Research focuses on Theory of emergence, Analysis of swarm behavior, and Analysis of ant system. Specific urban sites with different behavior patterns are chosen in Barcelona where this process is implemented to examine how they response to this course of action. This Bottom up method provides an optimum solution instead of a top down solution for an architectural problem

summary The excessive simplification of occupant behavior is considered as the most important factor that affects the uncertainty of building performance simulation, thus affects the reliability and generalizability of simulation-based design and forecast. In this paper, occupant behavior in air-conditioned office buildings of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region was investigated and defined. Copies of 873 questionnaires about the occupant behavior in air-conditioned office buildings in the PRD region were collected to study the relationship between indoor environment quality and adaptive behaviors. Eight typical office occupant schedules were defined via K-means clustering method. A probability prediction model of cooling temperature set-point was established by using the Ordinal Logistic Regression method. According to the different control modes of air conditioning, window, blind and lighting equipment, four types of typical behavior patterns were proposed using the K-prototype clustering method, which could be developed into 20 typical occupant behavior styles of office buildings in the PRD region.

summary This paper has two primary objectives. The first is to represent the practicability of making the design of entire buildings a conscious, craftsman-like, activity conducted in the clear, without the mystery that tends, because of designers' usual 'black box' methods, to surround it. To this end, a design strategy and some tactics for resolving decisions at critical stages in the design process, which the authors have described elsewhere, are recapitulated to show how total design of buildings can be pursued in a generic manner. This done, the way is opened for the second objective: to make the large and important field of work that is building design amenable to computerization. The form that pursuit of this second objective is taking is being influenced greatly by growing interest in expert systems, which for everyday professional building design appears a more useful development than previous CAD emphases on drafting and graphics. Application of the authors' design methods to a series of expert systems for the total design of entire buildings is therefore indicated. For such a vast project--the formulation of bases for design assistance and expert systems that can be integrated and used as a generic method for the total design of entire buildings, so that the results are more certain and successful than the outcome of the generality of present-day building design--the most that can be attempted within the limits of a single paper is a set of examples of some of the stages in the process. Nevertheless, since the design method described begins at the 'large end' of the process, where the most consequential decisions are made, it is hoped that the major thrusts and the essential CAD activities will be evident. All design is substantially iterative, and provided that the major iterations are intelligible, there should be no need for this demonstration to labor over the lesser ones

summary This paper examines the inherent possibilities for architectural production in automated deposition modeling techniques, primarily explored through the use of industrial robots in combination with plastic deposition heads. These robots, in combination with various polymers, toolpaths and colorations, served as a design ecology for the exploration of emergent behaviors in robotic construction. The relationship between geometry (Euclidian, topological, fractal), mechanical properties of material (plasticity, elasticity, viscosity, resilience), optical properties (color, absorbance, transmittance, scattering), and the gestural qualities of robotic toolpaths constitute the palette adopted for the presented project. The project combines the rigor of a platonic body (Figure 2) with the emergent properties of vague gestures. The introduction of moments of uncertainty in the process produces glitches that are embraced as an opportunity to find novel aesthetic conditions. The profound entanglement with the post-digital realm is discussed as the discursive plane of thinking applied to the project.

summary The stilt houses on Chiloé Island, Chile, traditionally built in local timber, are currently in poor conditions and lack of maintenance that contributes on a very poor thermal performance.To carry out interventions and inform decision making to intervene on such unique pieces of cultural heritage in fragile conditions, a computerized dynamic thermal simulation tool (software DesignBuilder®) is used to understand and assess the energy performance of these typology of houses, identifying their annual energy losses, and determining their current annual heating demand of ten case studies.The current annual heating demand of the stilt houses is high, due to the thermal transmittance values of the building envelopes. They exceed in five times the value recommended by Chilean Building Code for the climatic zone under study. Especially critical are heat losses through the ventilated floor (external floor under DesignBuilder® template) and air infiltration, which on average contributed to 30.5% and 28.85% of all energy loss, respectively. According to simulations for ventilated floor, walls, and roofs, the obtained performance could be improved to 65% with thermal reconditioning and measures to enhance airtightness, although the feasibility of such interventions without damaging the heritage houses needs to be carefully considered.

summary This research investigated the possibility of creating adaptable and precise curvilinear surfaces through the deformation of flat wooden surfaces. A prototype design system was developed to accomplish this task. The goal was to take a commonly-used architectural material, which is valued for its environmental sustainability and its aesthetic qualities, and to re-conceptualize it for use in cutting-edge adaptive digital designs. We therefore sought to develop a way to create wooden surfaces that could predictably transform in response to environmental stimuli. We successfully developed and tested the reversible deformation of a wooden surface by laminating a shape-memory polymer onto a kerfed wooden plane. The composite obtains its responsiveness from the shape-memory polymer, and its curvature direction and structural stability from the kerfed wood. The composite is able to deform to a defined curvilinear surface when heated to 40-60 degrees Celsius, and then self-transform back to the original flat surface when cooled. In addition to demonstrating kinetic behavior for a wood-based composite, the prototype offers a practical technique that can be used by designers to create flexible, inexpensive fabrication and packaging strategies.

summary This paper aims to define the concepts, methods and techniques needed to establish a multifaceted, yet comprehensive description of complex problems facing conventional architectural design, and how to decode the problems knots through integration between techniques and technologies in generative algorithmic and its impact of the quality of design solution. To attain these aims, the study explores the ability of integrated algorithmic techniques in developing dealing with complicated problems in the design of museums exhibition halls. It discusses, analyzes, and evaluates several conventional architectural design methods and reviews the challenges that limit their ability to produce creative solutions. This will help close the gap between the design quality and duration of design process; conforming that engineering programs help designers, not marginalize them. And hence developing architectural considerations in the design process to parametric paradigms that are suitable for scientific curriculum. So, the research problem is how such methodology can implement the integration between generative design techniques.

summary The world where humans live in, is constantly changing. In order to interact with these conditions, it is necessary for the architects to create an environment with sufficient dynamics based on the needs and behavior of its users. Kinetic architecture allows occupants to experience new environments which could cause raising the efficiency of the buildings. Therefore, constructions with kinetic elements could serve better utilitarian purposes in different fields.In the following essay, studies are about using kinetic design and fabrication method in one project despite ordinary ways regard to the two main points; 1. The impact of Khayyam's mathematics and astronomy on the proposed kinetic architecture and 2. Creating interaction Between Indigenous ideas and Contemporary Architecture in Khayyam Memorial Pavilion. As a result, a model is designed and several prototypes have been built.This essay illustrates that with making a connection among architecture and other fields of study could lead designers to be more creative according to the existing limitation in each project.
