title Urbamedia - Development of an urban database of fragments of some Argentinian and Latin-American cities using digital technology
source LOCAL VALUES in a NETWORKED DESIGN WORLD - ADDED VALUE OF COMPUTER AIDED ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, Stellingwerff, Martijn and Verbeke, Johan (Eds.), (2004) DUP Science - Delft University Press, ISBN 90-407-2507-1.
summary The proposal of "Urbamedia" is to undertake the development of 3D virtual and interactive models of historical areas of Latin-American cities. The selected zone is the "Mayo Avenue" including the "Mayo Square", an historical place of the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina; this project is financed by the National Agency of Scientific and Technological Development of Argentina and the University of Buenos Aires. We are presenting the first experimental model of the "Mayo Square" that has been developed at ABACUS, Department of Architecture & Building Aids Computer Unit, University of Strathclyde UK. combined with a system analysis of urban activities using the “Atlas.ti” CAQDAS software. This particular use of the “Atlas.ti” software is under experimental applications to this type of urban analysis procedures; allowed us the possibility to analysed a set of activities by means of graph theory as result of a series of interviews to the people working in the area. We are also looking to include historical areas of three cities: Mar del Plata, Rosario and Santa Fe (Argentina) and eventually other cities from Latin América as Rio de Janeiro and Habana.Due that ABACUS has a strong experience in city modelling plus the powerful software and hardware used there, we must develop a VRML customized menu to be adapted to our low cost PC equipment. The 3D model will be used mainly in urban design simulation procedures and the idea is to extend to other type of simulations of the environmental parameters.

title Erfahrungen und Erfolge bei der Umsetzung von RAPIS - Raum- und Projektinformationssystem für die Vienna Region [Experience and Results with the RAPS-System for the Viennese Region]
source CORP 2003, Vienna University of Technology, 25.2.-28.2.2003 [Proceedings on CD-Rom]
summary In shortest terms: RAPIS is a metadatabase on spatial information in the “Vienna Region”. More interesting then this simple fact is the way how theproject was implemented and what the effects on regional development are.RAPIS is the acronym for “Regional Planning and Project Information System for the Vienna Region” and was implemented as the Austrian part of the Interreg IIc Project IM-PLAN (Implementation of models for co-operative planning in metropolitan regions). The aim was to create aninformation platform for planning relevant information for the whole region, integrating existing data sources from federal and state administrationas well as private companies. RAPIS enables an overview of the available spatial datasets in the "Vienna Region " and focuses on the following questions: Which datasets relevant for planning and development are available within the region? Who can use these datasets under which conditions? Which plans and projects do exist for the region? In addition also metainformation on the most important international data sources was collected as well as information to projects and plans with regional and trans-regional impacts. During the implementation great importance was given to communication and sensitisation for the importance the topic: geo-informationinfrastructre as a key ressource for spatial development and regional co-operation. It showed up that Austria and the "Vienna Region" have a very good initial position and excellent databases on national, state, local and international level. However, it seems that almost everything exists already but hardly anybody knows about it ... – potential users do not know what data and information already exists and how to get and use it. Intensive communication, information and permanent discussion of the topic „(Geo-) Information“ within the „planners community“ carried the topic into the public and strengthened the consciousness for the importance of information-infrastructure for regional co-operation.

title XML Technologies and Geodata
source CORP 2003, Vienna University of Technology, 25.2.-28.2.2003 [Proceedings on CD-Rom]
summary Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing are very important methods for acquisition of geodata. During the previous decade, severalrevolutionary changes occurred in this area. Until the appearance of automated image analysis tools, it was necessary to measureselected points in the images given. At that time, it was much faster and even cheaper to get images of real world objects compared tothe time and money consuming process of manual analyses. So one tried to minimize this effort by measuring only characteristicpoints such as edges, break-lines, peaks and valleys and, for sure, a grid with a given grid step which was selected to meet the efforts.Lots of information in the images was neglected.Digital point matching algorithms and airborne laser scanning provide many new possibilities. The only restriction on spatialresolution is the one of the used sensors. Given a more precise image sensor, the matching algorithm will be able to match moresurface points; given a higher frequency laser scanner, more points can be measured of the same area. And those sensors get moreand more precise every day. Besides, those techniques allow for fast repetition which is necessary to create time series as a basis for4D modeling! However, this fact is accompanied by several problems concerning the capability of available computers. Some years ago, as the first ideas of 3D city models arose, it was very difficult to acquire the necessary data. Today the new sensors and methods have thenecessary capability, but we are not able to handle the available datasets efficiently, because of shortcomings in the past. In a time ofworld wide data exchange through the internet and global datasets, it is necessary to have efficient methods and algorithms tomanage the available data. There is a need for international, vendor independent data exchange and management standards that haveto be accepted and supported by the industry. This article is going to present several methods of data encoding using standardized data formats based on eXtensible Markup Language (XML). After an introduction to this kind of data encoding, two derived applications for management, storage and presentation of geodata are described. As XML data is written in text format, the datasets have the ability to become rather long. Therefore some promising methods to reduce the amount of data are introduced afterwards. XML documents are mainly used fordata exchange between databases. Therefore the capabilities of commonly used database systems for storage of geodata are describedin the end and current implementation results of the Institute of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (I.P.F.) are presented.

This proposal corresponds to a mix of methodology (by personal attendance / by internet). Founding on the Theory of the Game (Eric Berne 1960) and on different theories such as: Multiple intelligences (Haward Gardner 1983), Emotional Intelligence (Peter Salowey and John Mayer 1990, Goleman 1998), Social Intelligence (Goleman 2006), the Triarchy of Intelligence (Stemberg, R.J. 1985, 1997), “the hand of the human power”, it´s established that the power of the voice, that of the imagination, the reward, the commitment and association produce a significant increase of the productivity (Rosabeth Moss Kanter 2000), aside from the constructive processes of the knowledge (new pedagogical concepts constructivista of Ormrod J.E. 2003 and Tim O´Reilly 2004).

title Generation and visualization of 3D-city and facility models using CyberCity Modeler (CC-Modeler)
source CORP 2003, Vienna University of Technology, 25.2.-28.2.2003 [Proceedings on CD-Rom]
summary The efficient generation of data for 3-D city models and their handling in Spatial Information Systems has become feasible. The derivation of this data from aerial and terrestrial images with semi-automated techniques constitutes the most powerful tool currently available to fulfill this task. Semi-automated object extraction has become a viable concept for the generation of 3-D city models. CyberCity-Modeler (CC-Modeler) has been developed with the aim of creating not only buildings, but also other objects pertaining to a city model efficiently and with a high degree of flexibility concerning the level of detail. In its commercial implementation, CCModeler has been confronted with a number of user requirements which needed to be observed. This led to some extensions in functionality, which are addressed in this paper: Geometrical regularization of buildings, editing functions for topology adjustment, integration of facades and other vertical walls and modeling of overhanging roofs. These extensions of the original concept make CyberCity-Modeler an even more powerful tool for 3-D city modeling.

source SIGraDi 2003 - [Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Rosario Argentina 5-7 november 2003
summary Natural illumination can be considered as one of the major conditioner of the architectonical project, thus it demands an evaluation of it in the proposed architectonical object. Such evaluation can be achieved with graphic representations produced from computational simulations. However, those representations, images usually, deal with the difficulty to provide a better spatial comprehension since they do not allow people to visualize the tri-dimensional space due to it is a static and bi-dimensional representation. Once the interacting possibility can favour the observer spatial comprehension, this possibility was analyzed, creating a VRML environment to present a natural illumination simulation.

title Secure and Fast Urban Visualization
source CORP 2003, Vienna University of Technology, 25.2.-28.2.2003 [Proceedings on CD-Rom]
summary Due to the rising interest in urban visualization, a number of issues have emerged that need to be solved for practical application. The most prominent of these issues are: visualization performance and security. Visualization speed concerns the usability of urban visualization. In order to make urban visualization practical, it is necessary to completely hide all latency of loading data. Here we will demonstrate techniques like multi-threading, different rendering methods and level-of-detail that our platform uses to maintain interactive frame-rates in the face of the large amounts of data that are common in urban visualization environments. The secondissue, securing the geometry and image information contained in an urban model is of eminent importance for the owner of the data. We will point out a number of techniques that have been incorporated in our viewing platform in order to maintain a high level of data security: data compression and encryption, obfuscation of access keys, compression and encryption of executables. While perfect security is an unattainable goal, the multi-staged approach of security in our system significantly raises the cost of illegally obtaining access to the geometry or image data. By demonstrating solutions for both issues our framework serves as a viable platform for urban visualization.

summary XML (extensible markup language) is emerging as a significant tool not only to model data but also to facilitate the seamless sharing of data between multiple domains. Therefore it can be quite powerful in modeling building data that must often be shared between large numbers of professionals. The focus of this study is how to use this paradigm in structuring spatial and component based building data with the intention to use it in the analysis and simulation of the performance of buildings. The framework developed by the authors consists of three components. An XML structure (bmXML) for storing building data, a VBA-AutoCAD-Application for generating the XML files (bmGenerator) and a JAVA-Application which reads the bmXML data and prepares the information for simulation purposes. This paper primarily focuses on theVBA-AutoCADApplication.

title Experimental Tools for the Teaching of Technical Graphics and Improving Visualization
source Em‘body’ing Virtual Architecture: The Third International Conference of the Arab Society for Computer Aided Architectural Design (ASCAAD 2007), 28-30 November 2007, Alexandria, Egypt, pp. 457-468
summary This paper presents an updated evaluation of an experience of applying computer graphics, virtual reality and Internet resources in the teaching of technical graphics at the University of Brasilia, Brazil. It differs from a previous paper (Pratini, 2004) for the addition of an overview of the course, the context and the new teaching methodology. It is an extended, more detailed paper, which includes examples, and closes with some results of surveys on the didactic material and the methodology. Our motivation for this experiment is the fact that most of the students have a lack of previous knowledge on the basis of drawings, resulting difficulties in both understanding and visualizing technical drawings. In this experiment, we introduced VRML 3D modeling in addition to CAD and regular pencil-and-paper drawings study and practice. To support the learning of this broad knowledge not present in the technical graphics bibliography, we first provided a website with animations and virtual reality resources. Since 2003 we are providing a CD-ROM containing all the former website material which is updated each semester. At the present time, the CD-ROM contains almost all the needed didactic material and software for the one semester technical graphics course. This experience was intended to improve and to support learning in a way that motivates the students, young people who are used to play video and computer games. Classes, website and CD-ROM material were conceived to take advantage of computers´ interactivity and animated resources. The use of computers´ technology and new media to support the learning resulted a new methodology and several new unanswered questions.

title Imágenes para la Imaginación arquitectónica (Images for the architectural Imagination)
source SIGraDi 2003 - [Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Rosario Argentina 5-7 november 2003
summary The great impulse in the development of visual means (multimedia) achieved in the last years, demands from us a review of our basic visual capabilities and the necessity to continue developing a methodology for teaching and learning. The advances in technology have radically changed the forms and the functions of the visual component of expression and communication: the image. The aim of this work is to explore the expressive potential of images manipulating their formal components through digital techniques to interpret and/or to re-interpret into architectural object. For this purpose it is suggested a possible procedure to practice and develop the architectural imagination based on the diversity and structural differentiation of shape, starting from the image.

summary We have developed and implemented in our school a post-graduate CAAD course, over the last five years, which has been structured according to some problembased learning features, with the emphasis falling on the needs of the design process involved rather than on software categories. The development and implementation of such curriculum has been described in our early work. We describe in this paper part of the process of assessing the effectiveness of such approach, particularly through the use of value-added methods.
