summary Structural membranes exhibit advantages over slab and frame structures, accommodating large deformations while still elegantly combining spatial enclosure with material efficiency. One of the most promising types of membrane structures are membrane tensegrity structures, which are composed of discontinuous struts embedded in a tensile membrane. To date, membrane tensegrity structures are limited to completely closed formations or require extensive tethering, hindering their applicability for diverse architectural contexts. Here, a design framework is presented for creating self-supporting membrane tensegrity shell structures with spatial openings, enabled by novel reciprocally tessellated strut configurations. Through a combination of heuristic physical prototyping and digital formfinding tools, a library of membrane tensegrity forms has been developed that serves as tangible data for an expanded morphospace. To test the effectiveness of the established methods, a 10 m2 membrane tensegrity shell pavilion was built as a first large-scale demonstrator. Feedback from this demonstrator led to the development of computational strut tessellation tools that enable the search for informed, performance-driven design space.

summary This article discusses the development of GIS technologies applied to the management of sets of historical sites and single buildings, what is called in international literature HIS, or heritage information systems. With HIS it is possible to represent a historical site through a map or a DTM, which associate attributes from the historical buildings. For the conceptual modeling ontological studies were adopted to define the concepts and relationships with the application’s domain. The software ArcGIS was adopted as the development tool for the HIS, as well as the geographic database that stores the base map.

summary Research on contemporary habitation spaces is directly related to the study of the relationship between new media and everyday life. This paper presents ongoing in-depth research which intends to discuss these relationships in different ways on a conceptual basis. A collaborative multi-users interface is being specially designed, supported by different kinds of electronic equipment. Furthermore, the project’s objective is to analyze how these information and communication technologies are to be used, as well as their impact on poor communities. As a hypothesis, our intention is to verify if the access to information will be able to broaden social interactions and improve new services which have been set up, in order to guarantee a better quality of life. Beyond being a conceptual approach, the study intends to present and examine facts obtained from intervening in a poor district in São Paulo city, Brazil. Using an existing public telecenter as an access provider to the internet, individual TV-connected set-top boxes in 220 apartments in a local social housing complex are being installed, enabling users to communicate through a collaborative multiusers digital interface. Adding a virtual instance to a geographically-based community, the aim of the project is to provide new possibilities to improve dialogue and debates, to encourage more income and cultural activities. It also intends to evaluate the effects of the technological mediation of social relationships, both inside and outside the community, as well as within the physical urban space such as in the dwellings. The results of this study will be useful in defining public policies to be implemented by the Sao Paulo Local Government. The work is being sponsored by FAPESP, which is the Sao Paulo State Funding Agencie, but also by public institutions, private partners and universities. Researchers involved belong to complementary fields such as architecture, urbanism, computer sciences, social sciences, psychology and electronic engineering.

summary From the experience of the workshop TrapiXe, this article focuses on three aspects of the design of architectural objects with complex geometric shapes, making use of parametric computational programs. The first two relate 1. the establishment of relations between the architectural object and aspects of local culture; and 2 the use of information extracted from the area of intervention itself, transformed into parameters to be inserted in computer programming. The third aspect is the possibility of serial reproduction of non-identical building components, relating parametric design with digital fabrication procedures aiming at the construction of buildings composing a public equipments network at different locations in the same city.

summary This paper presents the Hybrid Territory Project, a cultural public policies research project carried ou by Nomads.usp, the Center for Studies of Interactive Living, of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. The central theme of the project is to understand how public cultural policies can make use of digital media in an effort to connect people and groups living in social realities apart from each other. The project seeks to bring physical and virtual instances together by means of cultural actions in urban areas. Moreover, it aims to design coexistence from joint work carried out by diverse actors, including architects, who have a voice in defi ning the project goals, actions, and methods. It is expected that the project will provide strategies for public policies to lay down conditions favoring the coexistence of differences in cities as enriching and desirable.

summary This paper presents some architectural housing projects designed by architects in different parts of the world, considering concepts originated from the virtuality domain. summary The aim of this paper is to explore the potential of building simulation programs as an evaluation and redesign tool. The research work consisted on the evaluation of thermal comfort in three low cost houses situated on different climatic zones of Chile, in order to create a matrix of appropriate redesign strategies with an adequate analysis of cost and benefits. Conclusions stressed out that building simulations programs are a useful tool for evaluating building performance, but detailed programs are still unfriendly to use widely by architects.

summary Three-quarters of the production value are generated during activities that involve thinking, conducting relational and brainstorming activities. Most of the European office buildings today have been designed on more than fifty year old architectural and psychosocial concepts. To improve wellbeing and productivity, design innovation focuses on human's use-process, evolving individual workspace to flexible and specialized ones, according to the users tasks - activity-based. BIM supports sophisticated behaviors simulation such as energy, acoustics, although the state of the art, this paradigm is not able to manage space use-processes. Compared to current research on simulation systems, the proposed method links spaces to user's Behavioral Knowledge including formalization of Personality Typologies and profiled behavioral patterns. A hybrid approach for computational technique has been identified, combining (big) data-driven algorithm with ontology-based context reasoning, in order to achieve both, the best performance from intensive data-driven methods, and the finest adaptation for ontological context awareness (including unexplored context capabilities and objects adaptations).

summary To improve environmental wellbeing and productivity, design innovation focuses on human's use-process, evolving individual space to flexible and specialized ones, according to the users' tasks - activity-based. BIM models supports sophisticated behaviours' simulation such as energy, acoustics, although it is not able to manage space use-processes. The present paper rather than a report of a case study or the presentation of a new methodology wants to contribute, together with previous works, in sketching a theroretical framework within which it is possible to compute the interaction between users and spaces (and vice versa). The quest is to reflect on possible paths for engineering knowledge and understanding, providing a BIM system the semantic information required to operate adaptively and achieve robust and innovative goal-directed behavior. Compared to current research on simulation systems, this research approach links Context, intended as spaces capabilities to Actor's Behavioural Knowledge including formalization of personality typologies and profiled behavioural patterns. By means of a classical problem solving metaphor, the "squared peg in a round hole" one, multiple categories for goal achievement are sketched, based on reciprocal Actors and Context behaviour adaptation.

summary At the time of a global pandemic, risk management in the AEC industry faces novel challenges: to ensure continuity production in worksites, National Governments have defined general protocols. Restrictions regarding individual behaviours are based on criteria as simple as possible but, designing and planning Healthy and Safe (HS) site activities introduces a higher level of complexity to be managed. Narrowing the field to Archaeological buildings, this research aims at defining a method and implementation path for a system supporting HS designers in reducing Covid-19 risk in restoration worksites. Methodologically, an action research approach was adopted, experimenting with some engineering requirements in the case study of the ongoing restoration of "Temple of Venus and Rome" in the "Parco Archeologico del Colosseo" in Rome.Since each scheduled activity assigns a number of actors to a workspace for a time-lapse, the idea is to check HS space classes (e.g. working; resting; paths; storage; etc.) - modelled extending commercial BIM tools - against ad hoc process rules (e.g. maximum presence allowed simultaneously). This early-stage plug-in system evaluates Covid-related safety performance of designed 3D worksite layout versus 4D execution program, eventually providing advice about distancing and physical interferences.

summary VR applied to Architectural and Archaeological Heritage has a long history: Digital models in this field are evolving from an aesthetic simulation of reality, or, rather, a representation of the visual perception, to a more complex model: an information aggregation core. The investigation presents a research panel oriented to enhance the digital survey products - point clouds, meshes, 3D models -to be used as an intelligent visual archive assigning structured knowledge contents to artefacts’ geometry. The implemented case regards the Temple of Venus and Rome. Research, in progress, has been developed by the following steps: 1) Subdividing the artefact geometry into sub- regions; 2) Developing the consolidation ontology for a few restoration classes; 3) Assigning (manually) to each artefact subcomponent, namely a mesh sub-region, a “smart label” including a link to its consolidation ontology instance. The aim is to combine the potential of VR visualization with ontology reasoning systems.

summary “A city can not be designed” Watanabe [1]: our ambition can be at the maximum to guide someway and in some part its growth. So as planners need tools to aid an open design with uncertain goals. This research group beginto develop such a tool at high level of abstraction (Fioravanti 2008), with theaim of investigating the potentiality of a collaboration among complementary research domains. The present work reports about early implementation results of an innovative approach developed by the authors, for representation of design knowledge. It has been identified in the Urban Design Ontology (Montenegro and Duarte 2009) some design entities and their internal relationships that have been formalized and visualized by means of an intuitive interface. As a matter of fact, this approach, by means of inference engines allows coherence’s check and constraint verification, pointing out incompatibility between initial design program and each partial specialist design solution and/or the overall shared one.

summary This paper discusses an architectural responsive façade system using hexagonal parametric forms and kinetic mechanism which responds sunlight. Its purposes are to buffer excessive sun exposure that goes through interior space and maximize the covering area with an incremental rotational joint system. The study aims to explore responsive façade system as second skin for architectural building, focusing on design, mechanism, and fabrication processes. The prototype consists of three parts: the hexagonal modules where the membranes and its frames are compacted; a series of levers to synchronize the movement of opening the membranes from each module; and a structural framework to hold each module as united kinetic façade system. As a preliminary prototype, the system can potentially be applied to several types of existing buildings and easily installed in various sizes and configuration. This kinetic mechanism can decrease sun radiation up to 50% than unprotected window façade.

summary Le Corbusier in Bogota 1947 - 1951, was an exhibition that presented the contrast between the urban development proposal of Le Corbusier in the fifties and the current city. A system has been developed in order to provide the audience with an interactive 3D visualization in the exhibition. This paper describes the focus - context model used to show the differences between the current state of the city and the design by Le Corbusier, as well as some aspects about human - computer interaction to design the user experience based on audience assessments. The exhibition was held in Bogota from April to June, 2010.

title Meeting in the middle: Hybrid clay three-dimensional fabrication processes for bio-reef structures

summary Despite the relative accessibility of clay, its low cost and reputation as a robust and sustainable building material, clay three-dimensional printing remains an under-utilized digital fabrication technique in the production of architectural artefacts. Given this, numerous research projects have sought to extend the viability of clay three-dimensional digital fabrication by streamlining and automating workflows through computational methods and robotic technologies in ways that afford agency to the digital and machinic processes over human bodily skill. Three-dimensional printed clay has also gained prominence as a resilient material well suited to the design and fabrication of artificial reef and habitat- enhancing seawall structures for coastal marine environments depleted and disrupted by human activity, climate change and pollution. Still, these projects face similar challenges when three-dimensional printing complex forms from the highly plastic and somewhat unpredictable feed material of clay. In response, this article outlines a research project that seeks to improve the translation of complex geometries into physical clay artefacts through additive three- dimensional printing processes by drawing on the notion of digital craft and giving focus to human–machine interaction as a collaborative practice. Through the case study of the 1:1 scale fabrication of a computationally generated bio-reef structure using clay as a feed material and a readily available Delta Potterbot XLS-2 ceramic printer, the research project documents how, by exploiting the human ability to intuitively handle clay and adapt, and the machine’s ability to work efficiently and with precision, humans and machines can fabricate together . With the urgent need to develop more sustainable building practices and materials, this research contributes valuable knowledge of hybrid fabrication processes towards extending the accessibility and viability of clay three-dimensional printing as a resilient material and fabrication system.

summary Urban morphology significantly impacts resident's wellbeing. This study examines the impact of urban environments on the sense of wellbeing, using virtual reality as a research tool. Participants were presented with simulated pedestrian movement through 24 virtual urban environments. The environments differed by density level, vegetation, and commercial activity. Participants assessed each alternative through structured questionnaires. The relationship between the participants' feelings and densification levels, vegetation, and commercial activity was analyzed. Densification levels independently predicted participant's wellbeing. An increase in density levels predicted a decrease in the participants' sense of belonging and wellbeing. At all levels of density, the presence of commercial activity predicted a higher sense of belonging.Density, vegetation and commercial activity had a significant impact on the participants' wellbeing. Extreme densification had a negative effect on the participants' feelings; but vegetation and commercial activity, especially at high-density levels, improved this feeling.
