summary In today’s Architectural design process, there has been considerable advancements in design computation tools that empowers designer to explore and configure the building façades schemes. However, one could formally argue that some processes are prescribed, lacks automation and are only for the purpose of visualizing the aesthetic design concepts. As a result, these design concept explorations are driven manually to exhibit variations between schemes. To overcome such limitations, the development presented here describes a proactive approach to incorporate parametric design thinking process and Building Information Modeling (BIM). This paper reports on an ongoing development in computational design and its potential application in exploring an interactive façade pattern. The objective is to present the developed approach for exploring façade patterns that responds parametrically to design-performance attractors. Examples of these attractors are solar exposure, interior privacy importance, and aesthetics. It introduces a paradigm-shift in the development of design tools and theory of parameterization in architecture. This work utilizes programming script to manipulate the logic behind placement of faced panels. The placement and sizes for the building facade 3D parametric panels react to variety of Analytical Image Data (AID) as a source for the design-performance data (e.g.: solar exposure, interior privacy importance, and aesthetics). Accordingly, this research developed the PatternGen(c) add-on in Autodesk ® Revit that utilizes a merge (or an overlay) of AID images as a source to dynamically pattern the building façade and generate the facade panels arrangement rules panels on the building exterior. This work concludes by a project case study assessment, that the methodology of applying AID would be an effective dynamic approach to patterning façades. A case-study design project is presented to show the use of the AID pixel-gradient range from Red, Green and Blue as information source value. In light of the general objectives in this study, this work highlights how future designers may shift to a hybrid design process.

summary In the last decades, design processes have been approached with absolutely new representation techniques: digital media. This new tool was naturally incorporated to the architectural task not only in universities but also in Architectural offices. However, their evolution and utilization have been so sudden that their impact on the design object could not be properly assessed. Simply they stated to be used by translating analogical representation techniques into the digital media. In the Latin American context, in which the media interaction paradigm has not yet been completely established within universities and teachers, this work presents an exploration of the underlying ideas contained in the architectural representation software, as well as a series of exercises intended to teach how to use digital media as a design tool, instead of teaching how to use them as a mere representation tool.

summary This paper explores the characteristics of painting developed during the Nineteenth century, and specifically updates the use of matter and brushing techniques invented by a group of painters called “Impressionists”. In that period, impressionist artists began to brush “tempera” on a canvas as a malleable matter able to emphasize an accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities.  Thick brush strokes left on the painted surface revealed the master’ gesture and completely changed the way to represent reality. Stimulated by the recent advancements in digital technologies, this paper looks for methodologies able to transfer impressionistic painterly innovation into a contemporary digital 3D environment and investigates how paint behaves when morphing from a photorealistic depiction of Nature to a disfigured one. In particular, reality-based 3D information, first frozen by a laser scanner into a digital geometry, slowly melts into liquid paint on a colour palette. While colours mix, the geometrical matter that constitutes the photorealistic scanned reality and its details disappear into primitive paint clog that are mixed and brushed into new colours and shapes able to create novel atmospheric and chromatic effects.

summary A 60-year-old Brazilian university campus reflects its development actions throughout history. The degradation of its water streams and automobiles prioritization has significantly impacted the ecosystems’ resilience and the university’s activities. This article explores data analytics and visualization of Wi-Fi authentication processes, whose data have been stored in the last 10 years. This noteworthy connections database is a powerful tool, still overlooked due to the remarkable risks for users’ privacy. Brazil has followed 2018 European regulations to protect data privacy, when working with personal data. Therefore, we present an anonymization process that prevents one to identify and distinguish a subject within a set of subjects of the database. Three studies illustrate our examination of data potential to understand the university’s dynamics. These inquiries present relevant contributions to the process of planning and implementing campus green areas at the rivers’ edges, pedestrian and cycle paths, and places to facilitate interdisciplinary encounters.

summary This article presents the result of the activities carried out for the discipline of the program Master in Design and Technology (UFRGS), Digital Manufacturing Process as a Tool for Project. It aimed to develop a product based on digital manufacturing process. With this purpose, was designed a package for the transport of apples. In order to achieve the goal the generation of alternatives was conducted through a game and Sketch Creative Brainstorming, followed by research on the product life cycle. Subsequently, was used parametric modeling software for the package design. The use of three-dimensional modeling software Rhinoceros together with the plug-in Grasshopper allowed the construction of three-dimensional parametric models. As a result, we obtained the creation of a product that can be adapted to other fruits, avoiding rework, and run through rapid prototyping, this being a consequence of the facilities of adoption of digital fabrication.

The goal of this paper is to develop a computer optimized system that can generate solutions for defining spaces involving a number of contextual relationships of activities. In particular, this research undertakes a pilot study (working team: Ashik Vaskor Mannan, Masrur Mamun Mithun, Lau Hon Yee Damien) on pattern and behavior in nature and implements the findings in to an architectural problem. The Initial Research focuses on Theory of emergence, Analysis of swarm behavior, and Analysis of ant system. Specific urban sites with different behavior patterns are chosen in Barcelona where this process is implemented to examine how they response to this course of action. This Bottom up method provides an optimum solution instead of a top down solution for an architectural problem

summary This paper has two primary objectives. The first is to represent the practicability of making the design of entire buildings a conscious, craftsman-like, activity conducted in the clear, without the mystery that tends, because of designers' usual 'black box' methods, to surround it. To this end, a design strategy and some tactics for resolving decisions at critical stages in the design process, which the authors have described elsewhere, are recapitulated to show how total design of buildings can be pursued in a generic manner. This done, the way is opened for the second objective: to make the large and important field of work that is building design amenable to computerization. The form that pursuit of this second objective is taking is being influenced greatly by growing interest in expert systems, which for everyday professional building design appears a more useful development than previous CAD emphases on drafting and graphics. Application of the authors' design methods to a series of expert systems for the total design of entire buildings is therefore indicated. For such a vast project--the formulation of bases for design assistance and expert systems that can be integrated and used as a generic method for the total design of entire buildings, so that the results are more certain and successful than the outcome of the generality of present-day building design--the most that can be attempted within the limits of a single paper is a set of examples of some of the stages in the process. Nevertheless, since the design method described begins at the 'large end' of the process, where the most consequential decisions are made, it is hoped that the major thrusts and the essential CAD activities will be evident. All design is substantially iterative, and provided that the major iterations are intelligible, there should be no need for this demonstration to labor over the lesser ones

summary This paper examines the inherent possibilities for architectural production in automated deposition modeling techniques, primarily explored through the use of industrial robots in combination with plastic deposition heads. These robots, in combination with various polymers, toolpaths and colorations, served as a design ecology for the exploration of emergent behaviors in robotic construction. The relationship between geometry (Euclidian, topological, fractal), mechanical properties of material (plasticity, elasticity, viscosity, resilience), optical properties (color, absorbance, transmittance, scattering), and the gestural qualities of robotic toolpaths constitute the palette adopted for the presented project. The project combines the rigor of a platonic body (Figure 2) with the emergent properties of vague gestures. The introduction of moments of uncertainty in the process produces glitches that are embraced as an opportunity to find novel aesthetic conditions. The profound entanglement with the post-digital realm is discussed as the discursive plane of thinking applied to the project.

summary This research investigated the possibility of creating adaptable and precise curvilinear surfaces through the deformation of flat wooden surfaces. A prototype design system was developed to accomplish this task. The goal was to take a commonly-used architectural material, which is valued for its environmental sustainability and its aesthetic qualities, and to re-conceptualize it for use in cutting-edge adaptive digital designs. We therefore sought to develop a way to create wooden surfaces that could predictably transform in response to environmental stimuli. We successfully developed and tested the reversible deformation of a wooden surface by laminating a shape-memory polymer onto a kerfed wooden plane. The composite obtains its responsiveness from the shape-memory polymer, and its curvature direction and structural stability from the kerfed wood. The composite is able to deform to a defined curvilinear surface when heated to 40-60 degrees Celsius, and then self-transform back to the original flat surface when cooled. In addition to demonstrating kinetic behavior for a wood-based composite, the prototype offers a practical technique that can be used by designers to create flexible, inexpensive fabrication and packaging strategies.

summary In traditional Indonesian architecture, bamboo and timber-frame structures are essential elements, with roofs being a prominent feature. This is due to the tropical climate conditions that demand such a design. However, the traditional Indonesian hyperbolic-paraboloid roof is at risk of extinction due to modern construction demands, and traditional craftsmanship is gradually being lost. To address this issue, our research investigates which existing parametric design tools and fabrication techniques are suitable for a digital workflow and assembly production of Indonesian traditional roof structures. Through a systematic review and analysis of 19 selected articles, we have categorized the various workflows, tools, and techniques and their suitability to propose and be integrated into a novel Indonesian bamboo-based roof structure fabrication workflow, making it accessible to contemporary architecture.
