summary Geometry and mathematics have always been disciplines related with architecture. As the geometry gets more complex, dealing with it becomes more intuitive. This study focuses on an exercise process, carried out with the third term undergraduate students, that searches complex geometries. The aim of this study is to make the students think over mathematical expressions as a design form and to improve their computational thinking abilities. This study takes the use of mathematics and geometry one step further in the architectural education process, and discusses that forms are not just visual values, and that their mathematical values can be used as parameters in the design process. In this context, complex three-dimensional objects that are difficult to model in three dimensions can be modelled and developed with parameters.

summary This paper demonstrates how digitally fabricated vacuum-formed components can provide a new type of efficient construction applicable to architecture. Vacuum forming has the advantage of rapid mass-production capability of 3D curved forms. Recent digital fabrication technologies, such as 3D CAD and CNC machining, have dramatically reduced the cost and time for making the mould. In combination with biodegradable plastic, such as PLA (poly lactic acid) made of biopolymer, it could open up new type of sustainable construction system, which is applicable for temporal disaster housings or exhibition booths.

summary This poster demonstrates how digitally fabricated vacuum-formed components can provide a new type of lightweight construction applicable to architecture. Surface-active systems such as a thin-shell concrete domes are some of the most material-efficient structures. Despite their efficiency few have been constructed recently due to necessary extensive labor cost. However, the growing concern for a worldwide shortage of natural resources and rising material costs, suggests that we reconsider the use of efficient structures, such as surface-active systems. Vacuum formed plastics mainly used in industrial design have strong merit based on their fast and low-cost mass production. Together with the recent emergence of digital fabrication technologies, the vacuum forming process is becoming an attractive fabrication technique for new and innovative lightweight structures.

summary The presented paper describes a series of studio-based research projects on structural optimisation and the cost-effectiveness of digital fabrication that aim to balance stress distribution across thick walls or a rib density of slabs. As a consequence of the structural optimisations, the results tend to be non-uniform shapes that are not ideal for cost-effective fabrication. This paper introduces a few simple models to balance structural optimisation and fabrication cost-effectiveness. It involves relatively simple structural simulations as the design inputs, and then converts the simulation results into various architectural forms using parametric 3D modelling tool (McNeel Rhinoceros v4, Grasshopper v0.8) before fabricating them using digital fabrication technologies. The major challenge of this study is how to translate simulation results into architectural components/overall building shapes and how to fabricate complex forms in a cost-effective manner.

summary This research aims to think of guidelines, from a Smart Heritage perspective, for the development of an artifact that will aim to “boost” the visual perception of the architectural heritage. Thus, the Smart Campus at UEL works as the research environment, as a living lab to test the points of the Smart City. The research was designed in Design Science Research in six steps: (1) Problem Identification, (2) Suggestion, (3) Development, (4) Demonstration, (5) Evaluation, and (6) Communication. The results presented correspond to phases (1), (2) and structuring of (3). Step (2) had a focus group of four experts in the field of architectural heritage and sought a more realistic epistemological position, focusing on real problems and solutions about the visual perception of architectural heritage in visitation itineraries. Based on the experts' statements, a cross-check was made with the points raised in the Smart Heritage literature to then list the main guidelines for the artifact.

summary Over the past decade, ‘smart’ cities have capitalized on new technologies and insights to transform their systems, operations and services. The rationale behind the use of these technologies is that an evidence-based, analytical approach to decision-making will lead to more robust and sustainable outcomes. However, harvesting high-quality data from the dense network of sensors embedded in the urban infrastructure, and combining this data with social network data, poses many challenges. In this paper, we investigate the use of an intelligent middleware – Device Nimbus – to support data capture and analysis techniques to inform urban planning and design. We report results from a ‘Living Campus’ experiment at the University of Melbourne, Australia focused on a public learning space case study. Local perspectives, collected via crowdsourcing, are combined with distributed and heterogeneous environmental sensor data. Our analysis shows that Device Nimbus’ data integration and intelligent modules provide high-quality support for decision-making and planning.

summary Computers are very common drawing tools at university design studios but their potential as training tools in arts and design has not been explored in depth. In arts and design the learning process is based on ‘knowing in action’ (Schön 1983). Therefore, training is the keystone of the learning process in arts and design. This action takes the form of a reflective practice based on the manipulation of a media where each media has its own possibilities, its own limits in communicating design ideas or artistic concepts. With the introduction of digital media in the design studio, it is expected that reflective practices in design learning will experience a qualitative change. However, currently there is little understanding of how to use the digital and virtual media in a design studio as a learning tool (Szalapaj 2001), nor of the use of design training programs. In this paper the use of training programs in an experimental design course at a university level, is discussed. This experience was carried out as a PhD research experiment at the Faculty of Architecture and Arts of the Universidad de Los Andes in Merida, Venezuela. The training programs discussed here were designed for an eight week introductory design course in a virtual design studio. The programs were written in VRML and conceived as a virtual design training environment. Each program was designed for a specific design exercise, based on a learning strategy and an interactivity model proposed for object manipulation in design training. A comparative analysis of the data gathered from the course was made of training exercises done with a Cad program and with the training programs and crossing information with other sources. The experiment shows that the training programs, their learning strategy and the interactivity model proposed were successful in guiding the scope of the design exercises during the training process.

summary This paper explains the development of an integrated information environment that is designed specifically for applications dependent on information related to soil types and terrain of the project site. This covers a wide variety of applications such as shallow and deep foundations, trenching, earthmoving and tunneling. The design of this environment takes into consideration the typical requirements of the project team with an emphasis on integrating requirements for both design and construction. The environment reported here is comprised of three main modules, a relational database for the storage and display of soil borelog information, a geographic information system that displays the geographical locations of soil studies, and a module that is used to develop a three-dimensional profile of the soil layers between any number of borelogs. The user may also develop cross sections of soil layers in any direction. This paper reports on the hardware and software used and concludes with a discussion of future extensions to the system.

summary In the design process, knowledge of structural mechanics is often reduced to its being used to determine whether the object that has been designed is sufficiently strong. Strength testing indicates this directly on a yes or no basis, whereas computations are able to compare the level of stress with the strength of the material. Understanding the interplay between load, form, and material which structural mechanics is able to provide can be of considerable and far-reaching importance, both at an early conceptual design stage and while developing parts and details. The aim of this paper is to show how structural mechanics (in particular, static eigenvalue analysis) can be used to create work methods that provide a common language between the designer and the engineer during the design process. A case study is presented in which the Finite Element Method (FEM) was used to perform static eigenvalue analyses aimed at facilitating a collaborative furniture design process in the creation of a shell-shaped chair. Analysis of this sort was chosen because it can be used in a sketch-like manner. The designer found it easy to incorporate the results of the analysis into his own sketching work. It also enabled him to see how different design changes affected the overall structural behaviour of the chair without him having to create a full-scale prototype for physical testing.

summary This paper is a discussion and a re-examination of the materiality and the perception of architecture and architectural spaces beyond the physicality of bricks and mortar and beyond the geometrical delineation of walls and ceilings. This paper presents our research in responsive architecture, computational and interactive media, and the phenomenology of space perception, presence, and embodiment. We will introduce some of our experiments where we design and implement immaterial spaces and potential architectures through sensing, moving, and non-linear narratives, and attempt to revisit concepts of perception, space, and spatiality, when technology is used in architecture not as tools for design and visualization, rather as a framework for designing of engaging and meaningful experiences.

summary This research project proposed to create spatial and communal qualities of Group Form architecture via a web-based user participation design method. The proposed method allows multiple users to simultaneously design houses on the same site, encouraging spatio-temporal negotiation as users interact and collaborate with one another. In order to assess the feasibility of this approach, a prototype of a web-based Group Form design tool was implemented using the Processing environment. An experiment using the web-based tool was conducted with the objective of exploring the actual user behaviour.

summary We elaborate on results of our collaborations with Philip Beesley and the Living Architecture Systems Group over the past year. Instead of additional layers of material, spatial sound interweaves meaningful fabric to sculptural form and living architecture. An architectural design now can be embedded within a sonic field (exterior), or spatial sound can form itself inside sculptural objects (interior). 4DSOUND has evolved in implementing irregular speaker setups to enhance sound projection and create applied instrumental possibilities of composing with spatial sound in the sculptural realm. We will further discuss developments regarding the integration of the 4DSOUND Engine to control other media like light, kinetics, and sensor interfaces. The paper will conclude with future research and objectives.

summary In this paper we examine the strategies used in 3D modeling for their efficiency. Our study explores the underlying cognitive process that drives design thinking as well the choice of strategies for using specific features in a given CAD software. We take a cognitive task analysis approach to examine our question. Of a total sample of 19 participants, the strategies of the fastest and slowest users are compared to identify areas of improvement for software development as well as user training.
