summary To generate models of branched and reticular urban layouts, under three different forms of growth (linear, radial, strips), a program designed on AutoLISP Æ for the AutoCAD Æ V-2000 has been proposed. The generated models are both graphical as well as mathematical, and for each case are produced, considering the two variables assumed as inputs: the number of houses and the number of grouping units. The mathematical data is automatically saved in a MSExcel Æ spreadsheet created through a direct connection established from the AutoCAD Æ V-2000.

summary The Hypertext on Barcelona was realized within the interuniversity scientific research "La Produzione dei circuiti multimediali didattici per l'architettura e l'urbanistica" (The production of multimedia didactic circuits for architecture and urban planning), coordinator Prof. Paola Coppola Pignatelli - Dipartimento di Progettazione Architettonica e Urbana- Facoltà di Architettura, Università "La Sapienza", Roma, Italia. During the numerous debates on the relationship between multimedia and communication of the project a long list of problems emerged: the understanding and the management of explorable fields opened by these new media; the informative overflow that can introduce irrelevant information; the "interactive" anxiousness that produces a continuous jumping from one theme to another without any understanding; the identification of the right contents of a multimedia product, that requires an elaborate culture of media languages; the education of the users on new models of learning. From the debates emerged in short a principal point: the necessity to study and to experiment a "multimedia tool" able of transmitting knowledge not through a simple sum of data but through a group of information. If every single tool has -its own characteristics and if the combinations are not automatic, then the modes and contents should be examined. Is it possible therefore to invent a strategy of communication?

summary The operation and construction of buildings account for almost half of the energy use in the United States. To meet global climate change targets, energy consumption of buildings in the long term must be reduced as well as carbon dioxide emissions. This article explores a theoretical building envelope that generates energy and produces water by drawing water vapor out of the air to deliver new sources of water; it lowers indoor humidity in hot and humid climates. The design in this model considers materiality, surface area and environmental conditions to influence build- ing form. The case in this article considers materials and systems application in the design of the building envelope. The hygroscopic building envelope design strategically senses varying conditions of concentration and density of moisture laden air to provide visual indications of its performance. It is a building skin that emulates biological processes by creating pressure differences and transferring energy in various forms.

summary We argue that a re-integration of computer technology into a design curriculum is possible without necessarily displacing traditional subjects or time-honored notions of building and place. An ideal computer curriculum might be one that merges computer technologies into existing courses more progressively than is typical today and at the same time looks to the studio teaching method as a catalyst for shifting perspectives on the relevant areas of design theory and methods. This position paper asserts a framework for a design educational program which integrates the use of computer technology. In posing such a curriculum, this position paper also attempts to work within some professional accreditation constraints that Schools may need to address.

summary According to eCAADe’s mission, the exchange and collaboration within the area of computer aided architectural design education and research, while respecting the pedagogical and administrative approaches in the different schools and countries, can be regarded as a core activity. The current education session follows up on a round table discussion held at eCAADe 2000 in Weimar, Germany, which was continued in the form of a plenary session at eCAADe 2001, focusing on sharing ideas on a more progressive curriculum under the topic “The Ideal Computer Curriculum”. The primary objective for the 2002 education session is to engage participants in an active discussion, not the longer format presentation of prepared positions. The round-table itself is limited to short opening statements so as to ensure time is allowed for viewpoints to be exchanged and for the conference attendees to weigh in on the issues discussed. The panel will critique current patterns teaching of computer aided design in schools of architecture, a review of past practices with the potential for guiding future direction.

summary The first generations of computer aided design systems were largely characterized by geometrical modeling software that could, in some applications, generate physical output in the form of computer aided manufacturing. More recently the technology has expanded to include a variety of ways to reverse direction, such that physical objects are captured and translated into computer graphics geometrical models. Laser surveying methods that produce point clouds are among the newer technologies that make this possible. The interpretation of the point clouds and translation of them into a computer graphics three-dimensional model can be subject to various mediation processes. This paper reports on a translation environment that interprets the point clouds so as to not just replicate the physical world, but rather encapsulates it towards the refinement and realization of geometry design objectives. A case study of Fountains Abbey, a Cistercian Abbey in the United Kingdom, serves as the basis for experimentation and control of surface geometry.

summary This is a period of relative detente among academics in the field of computers and architecture, advocating the use of computers in a design studio is today received more politely than, as in the past, when it was received like a declaration of war. Among some research groups at M.I.T. and Harvard to first engage In this field, the approaches were so dissimilar to one another that they could be considered as constituting separate schools of thought. Over time, however, a number of paths have led to a similar direction, if not agreement among principal investigators. The lack of sharply competing ideologies today may be a little less exciting: however, the enormous growth of the academic discipline seems now to allow for a fruitful exchange of ideas between positions that no longer seem mutually exclusive.

Two views are important, among others, at M.I.T. and Harvard. The classic M.I.T. view looks upon the AI Lab as a microcosm for examining how architects think. Underlying this view is the position of 'lets examine the way architects think about design and build tools which can reflect that process'. Another point of view, as expressed at Harvard, is speculative on what architects seem to do in design practice and education, rather than speculative on the nature of thinking per se. Both views seem ultimately to be concerned with representing architectural design knowledge within computers. And in the rob of computers as a design medium. This paper examines how the M.I.T. view and the Harvard view have superficially been associated with separate research directions. As these contrasting points of view incorporate many common themes. The author finds that it may be possible to take an eclectic position in teaching computer aided design.

title Efficiency of Model Endoscopic Simulation - An Experimental Research at the University of Stuttgart

summary At the Institute of Urban Planning at the University of Stuttgart early experiments were made with the help of endoscopes in the late 1970’s. The intention was to find new instruments to visualize urban design projects. The first experiment included the use of a 16 mm film of a 1:170 scale model of the market place at Karlsruhe, including design alternatives (with trees, without trees etc). The film was shown to the Karlsruhe authorities, who had to make the decision about the alternatives. It was said, that the film gave a great help for the decision-making and a design proposition had never before been presented in such understandable way. In 1975-77, with the support of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) an investigation was carried out into existing endoscopic simulation facilities, such as those in Wageningen, Lund and Berkeley. The resulting publication was mainly concerned with technical installations and their applications. However a key question remained: ”Can reality be simulated with endoscopy?” In 1979-82, in order to answer that question, at the Institute was carried out the most extensive research of the time, into the validity of endoscopic simulation. Of special importance was the inclusion of social scientists and psychologists from the University of Heidelberg and Mannheim. A report was produced in 1983. The research was concerned with the theory of model simulation, its ways of use and its users, and then the establishment of requirements for effective model simulation. For the main research work with models or simulation films, psychological tests were developed which enabled a tested person to give accurate responses or evidence without getting involved in alien technical terminology. It was also thought that the use of semantic differentials would make the work imprecise or arbitrary.

summary The material balance of the Earth is being challenged. The year 2020 was marked as the year when the total weight of human-made materials globally surpassed the weight of all life on Earth, while it is estimated that in the years to come the growth rate of mass added to the anthroposphere will increase exponentially (Elhacham et al., 2020). In this context of hypergrowth coupled with the climate emergency, the growing rate of urbanization and the increasing social and political awareness on the matters of the Anthropocene, the topics of resource depletion or insufficiency are being reframed. This keynote lecture at ACADIA 2023 highlights the importance of redefining resources and is introducing a new cultural, design and construction paradigm. Operating from an abundance mindset rather than from scarcity (Gausa et al., 2020) presents a new paradigm, particularly relevant in the design and production of the built environment. This approach expands the definition of resources, encompassing raw, non-raw, renewable, and recyclable materials. Shifting attention to the Anthroposphere as a source rather than just a destination for processed goods has the potential to disrupt linear design patterns and enhance circularity in cities and the built environment.

summary Belo Horizonte currently has several areas of social interest, which present irregular occupation and a lack of infrastructure. This scenario demands methodologies that can quickly respond to the main problems of the many areas, and that also contemplates a participatory planning. In this context, the article presents a Geodesign study conducted by the City Hall with the goal of evaluating the suitability of the methodology as a reference in the process of participatory planning for technicians and the population. It used a pilot area, called Maria Tereza, which is a relatively recent occupation located in the Northeastern region of the municipality.

When major changes in design direction take place, the work invested in the modeled relations is often lost. We contend that an implicit relational modeling approach provides for loosely coupled relations between the 'parts' of a design and mitigates the loss of work that occurs when changes take place. In our implemented system, implicit relations participate in a pattern of interaction known as the Dynamic Proxy.

summary This paper presents reflections stemmed from a research that seeks to cast a gaze toward the diversity of ways of living in communities, starting from the interaction in communicational processes structured by digital means. This paper introduces findings on the possibilities of similarities between people of different groups in a community in hybrid instances, starting from cultural activities. Further explorations about the potential and qualifications of the use of digital media for this purpose will also be presented. The trials that comprise the object of reflection in this article took place and were only achievable for being part of a larger public policy project, funded by an important Brazilian research funding agency. The project has been in development since March 2010 by the research group of a recognized leading university and involves post-doctoral, doctoral and master researchers. Additionally, the project has partnership with various third sector institutions such as NGOs and collectives, as well as music bands and European universities.

It was as if vision research suddenly acquired its own Principia Mathematica, or perhaps General Relativity Theory, in terms of the new explanatory power Marr's theories provided. Truly an extraordinary book from an extraordinary thinker in the area of perception, vision, and the brain.

summary The success CAD has experienced in the architectural profession demonstrates that architects have been willing to replace traditional drafting media with computers and electronic plotters for the production of working drawings. Its expanded use in the design development phase for 3D modeling and rendering further justifies CAD's usefulness as a presentation medium. The schematic design phase however, has hardly been influenced by the evolution of CAD. Most architects simply have not come to view the computer as a viable design medium. One reason for this might be the strong correspondence between architectural CAD and plan view graphics, as used in working drawings, compared to the weak correspondence between architectural CAD and plan view graphics, as used in schematic design. The role of the actual graphic medium during schematic design should not be overlooked in the development of CAD applications.

In order to produce practical CAD applications for schematic design we must explore the computer’s potential as a form of expression and its role as a graphic medium. An examination of the use of traditional graphic media during schematic design will provide some clues regarding what capabilities CAD must provide and how a system should operate in order to be useful during conceptual design.

summary Understanding the quality of places during the early design process can improve design decision making and increase not only the chance of effective site development for the place and surroundings but also provide foresight to the mental, physical and environmental well-being of the future occupants. A context can be described differently depending on the designer's studies. However, in order to view the place holistically, various layers should be considered for a cross-disciplinary correlation. This paper proposes a prototypical tool to evaluate the quality of places using machine learning to help cluster and visualise design metrics according to the features provided. By selecting a location in a city, it offers other site contexts with similar characteristics and a similar level of complexity in relation to the surroundings. The tool was initially developed for Naples (Italy) as a case study city and incorporates key indicators related to connectivity of amenities, walkability, urban density, population density, outdoor thermal comfort, popular rate review and sentiment analysis from social media. With current open-source data, these indicators such as OpenStreetMap or social media sentiment can be collected with embedded geotags. These site-specific multilayers were evaluated under the metrics of 3 ranges i.e 400, 800 and 1,200-metre walking distance. This paper demonstrates the potential of using machine learning integrated with computational design tools to visualise the otherwise invisible data for users to interpret any context comprehensively in a holistic approach. Even though this tool is made for Naples, this tool can be extended to other cities across the world. As a result, the tool assists users in understanding not only site-specific location but also draws lines to other neighbourhoods within the city with a similar phenomenon of correlation between key performance indicators.
