summary Architectural animations are like Harry Langer, a fifty-something entertainment mogul played by best actor nominee Jack Nicholson in the film Something.s Gotta Give. They.ve been surrounded by plenty of pathetic spiritless gimmicks. And, like Harry in the film, they have suffered a heart attack. Harry did not die. Architectural animations are still around, barely. Something.s wrong with them. When Harry begins to recover, he.s surprised to find himself growing fond of a woman his own age (played by best actress nominee Dianne Keaton). This is precisely what should happen to architectural animations. They need to come to terms with more mature attitudes and approaches. This paper presents a new and different approach to architectural animations. In ninety nine percent of the cases, architectural animations have been produced at the end of the design process, just when architects or architecture students are ready to present their schemes to an audience or client group. All design decisions have been made. All aspects of the architectural solutions have been set. Tectonic qualities, lighting schemes, construction approaches, everything has been cast in stone. The animation is simply shown as a public relations gesture to broadcast to the audience that the design team is digitally savvy and uses the latest technologies. The proposition contained herein is that animations be used throughout the design process, that is, from beginning to end.

summary The paper discusses 23 interviewed architects in practice about the role of traditional and digital sketching (human-computer interaction) in communication with the client. They were selected from 1995 to 2018 (the interval of graduation) from three different countries: the Czech Republic (CR), Slovakia (SR), Netherland (NR). To realize three blending areas that impact the approach to sketching: (I) Traditional hand and physical model studies (1995-2003). (II)Transition form - designing by hand and PC (2004–2017). (III) Mainly digital and remote forms of designing (2018–now). Interviews helped transform 31 “parameters of tools use” from the previous theoretical framework narrowed down into six main areas: (1) Implementation; (2)Affordability; (3)Timesaving; (4) Drawing support; (5) Representativeness; (6) Transportability. Paper discusses findings from interviewees: (A) Implementation issues are above time and price. (B) Strongly different understanding of what digital sketching is. From drawing in Google Slides by mouse to sketching in Metaverse. (C) Substantial reduction of traditional sketching (down to a total of 3% of the time) at the expense of growing responsibilities. (D) 80% of respondents do not recommend sketching in front of the client. Also, other interesting findings are further described in the discussion.

summary Three conditions exist that are likely to lead to significant restructuringof the construction industry. These are (1): the recognition that traditional contracting practices are inefficient and costly to the client, (2) the growing availability of information-rich 3D parametric modeling, and (3) the strong interest in integrating the issues of design and fabrication. Some aspects of these conditions are examined using two examples: parametric design and integration in steel structural design, and in fabrication-level modeling of precast concrete. The implications of these changes are explored.

summary Keyframing, Morphing, Inverse Kinematics; they are all animation technics which have been explored by diverse groups of architects, academics and students, searching for new horizons in the proyecting process development, pushing forward the present limits of proyecting methodology. We define this project starting by the explorative use of animation tools as experimental variables in reformulating our design processes. Data input have been traditionally carried out using classic interfaces such as keyboard, mouse, graphics tablet, among others. Despite this is accepted by many as the standard way of communicating with machines, we think this is still very far from the ideal way to design and model new proposals. In this context we propose to investigate a new way to approach to the computed aided modelling process, questioning and reformulating traditional interfaces in user .machine communication.

summary As a couple of years ago the use of computers slowly entered studios of architecture, the development of operating systems actually enables everybody to control even bigger networks within studios or offices. Recently these local networks started to get networked themselves. Interactions between local design partners involve a large variety of problems• different CAD-systems• different versions of the same CAD-system• different methods of transfer• different security ideas• different levels of technical knowledge In the course of extension to a global level these problems in the first approach have been growing dramatically, involving additionally language and mentality problems. But in the outcome the exchange of documents and ideas improves in speed, quality and accuracy or this will at least happen in the near future.Global networking offers a great challenge, we have to give this matter a big deal of efforts to earn the values and results, which may be achieved.

summary This paper outlines the evolution of digital management systems used in the School of Architecture and building at Deakin University from 2001 to the present. These systems have been implemented to support a curriculum development programme in the design, construction and computing units. Two school-based information management systems are discussed in depth: low-tech network submission system and Bentley Systems Inc’s ProjectWise. Early experiences in using a universitybased system are also reported on. Lessons learnt from three years experience in managing digital resources for design education have informed the development of a growing digital culture in the architectural and construction management curricula. Whilst digital curriculum design and management systems supporting this curriculum have been developed effectively in this school, full optimization of IT to enhance design education is reliant on fundamental changes within traditional academic culture.

summary Central to Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) is the claim that knowledge in human memory takes the form of cases, i.e. interpreted representations of concrete experiences. The intimate relationship between knowledge and experience in design has inspired CBR researchers to develop various Case-Based Design tools, which try to support architects (and designers in general) in capitalizing on previous design experience. Typically, these tools is built around a case base, an indexed collection of concrete cases labeled by a set of characteristic features. In general, cases document buildings, i.e. design products. By contrast, Building Stories has chosen to complement product data by stories about the process that generated the product. Previous papers have documented and illustrated the ideas underlying Building Stories and situated the methodology with regard to other case study approaches. The present paper focuses on establishing the growing repository of building stories into a valuable resource of and for the profession.

summary Having as topic for the conference the tile with keywords such as culture, technology, and architecture, we were expecting to find out the relationships among those three domains, and how they are interrelated in this fast growing information society. This triangular relationship has been established based on the increasingly noticeable paradigm shift from traditional computer-aided design research in architecture to research in diverse areas such as virtual environments and communities and interactive smart spaces, including the consideration of sociocultural aspects along with the technological issues. Making virtual environments focuses on creating a new, yet virtual world where people can inhabit or visit for diverse purposes. The virtual architecture becomes a medium for diverse communications as well as digital contents for the new media industry. For example, virtual heritage projects introduce a new way of preserving historic buildings and sites. At the same time, interactive smart spaces often combine two different worlds: real and virtual worlds. Growing digital technologies enables us to create intelligent physical spaces where computers are ubiquitous and invisible in space, and thus human beings can interact with architectural spaces, not necessarily with computers directly. At this point, issues on virtual reality (VR) and human computer interactions (HCI) become architects' and designers' concerns in socio-cultural aspects. The proceedings of the Nineth International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia, presents 74 papers which were selected from the 131 submissions through a blind review of 58 international reviewers. Each submission was reviewed by three reviewers and the final acceptance was based on their recommendations.

In the future, using a system like this will eventually create so many designs, interpretations, patterns and spaces to choose from the questions become: how would design be perceived within these virtual spaces; and how might our aesthetics change due to this new dialogue with machines?

summary The paper details computational mapping and modeling techniques from an ongoing design research project titled Irradiated Shade, which endeavors to develop and calibrate a computational toolset to uncover, represent, and design for the unseen dangers of ultraviolet radiation, a growing yet underexplored threat to cities, buildings, and the bodies that inhabit them. While increased shade in public spaces has been advocated as a strategy for “mitigation [of] climate change” (Kapelos and Patterson 2014), it is not a panacea to the threat. Even in apparent shade, the body is still exposed to harmful, ambient, or “scattered” UVB radiation. The study region is a binational metroplex, a territory in which significant atmospheric pollution and the effects of climate change (reduced cloud cover and more “still days” of stagnant air) amplify the “scatter” of ultraviolet wavelengths and UV exposure within shade, which exacerbates urban conditions of shade as an “index of inequality” (Bloch 2019) and threatens public health. Exposure to indirect radiation correlates to the amount of sky visible from the position of an observer (Gies and Mackay 2004). The overall size of a shade structure, as well as the design of openings along its sides, can greatly impact the UV protection factor (UPF) (Turnbull and Parisi 2005). Shade, therefore, is more complex than ubiquitous urban and architectural “sun” and “shadow studies” are capable of representing, as such analyses flatten the three-dimensional nature of radiation exposure and are “blind” to the ultraviolet spectrum. “Safe shade” is contingent on the nuances of the surrounding built environment, and designers must be empowered to observe and respond to a wider context than current representational tools allow.

summary Mesh segmentation has become an important and well-researched topic in computational geometry in recent years (Agathos et al. 2008). As a result, a number of new approaches have been developed that have led to innovations in a diverse set of problems in computer graphics (CG) (Sharmir 2008). Specifically, a range of effective methods for the division of a mesh have recently been proposed, including by K-means (Shlafman et al. 2002), graph cuts (Golovinskiy and Funkhouser 2008; Katz and Tal 2003), hierarchical clustering (Garland et al. 2001; Gelfand and Guibas 2004; Golovinskiy and Funkhouser 2008), primitive fitting (Athene et al. 2004), random walks (Lai et al.), core extraction (Katz et al.) tubular multi-scale analysis (Mortara et al. 2004), spectral clustering (Liu and Zhang 2004), and critical point analysis (Lin et al. 20070, all of which depend upon a weighted graph representation, typically the dual of a given mesh (Sharmir 2008). While these approaches have been proven effective within the narrowly defined domains of application for which they have been developed (Chen 2009), they have not been brought to bear on wider classes of problems in fields outside of CG, specifically on problems relevant to generative architectural design. Given the widespread use of meshes and the utility of segmentation in GAD, by surveying the relevant and recently matured approaches to mesh segmentation in CG that share a common representation of the mesh dual, this paper identifies and takes steps to address a heretofore unrealized transfer of technology that would resolve a missed opportunity for both subject areas. Meshes are often employed by architectural designers for purposes that are distinct from and present a unique set of requirements in relation to similar applications that have enjoyed more focused study in computer science. This paper presents a survey of similar applications, including thin-sheet fabrication (Mitani and Suzuki 2004), rendering optimization (Garland et al. 2001), 3D mesh compression (Taubin et al. 1998), morphin (Shapira et al. 2008) and mesh simplification (Kalvin and Taylor 1996), and distinguish the requirements of these applications from those presented by GAD, including non-refinement in advance of the constraining of mesh geometry to planar-quad faces, and the ability to address a diversity of mesh features that may or may not be preserved. Following this survey of existing approaches and unmet needs, the authors assert that if a generalized framework for working with graph representations of meshes is developed, allowing for the interactive adjustment of edge weights, then the recent developments in mesh segmentation may be better brought to bear on GAD problems. This paper presents work toward the development of just such a framework, implemented as a plug-in for the visual programming environment Grasshopper.

summary The present thesis is centred on the use of programmed tools as alternative or as support of the classical computer aided architectural design methods.This thesis shows among other things how were programmed/generated the mathematical descriptions of the frames, the joints and the production drawings using MEL (Maya Embedded Language).Further will be discussed pros and cons of the imported and exported digital data structures for their respective purpose like the generation of the joint details, the model visualizations, the different prototypes and the generation of the construction stylesheets.The result of this work will be shown by visualizations of digital models as well as by using rapid prototyping methods and CNC machines.Moreover this thesis will deal with the programming of stylesheets which were used to generate variants of constructions.The NDS2004 prototype represents such a variant and was produced with the above mentioned programmed tools.

title Generation and optimization of complex and irregular construction/structure on example of NDS2004 final project

summary During the postgraduate studies in CAAD at ETH the research is mainly focused on computer based architectural design and its automatic production. Usually the way from an architectural idea to production starts with creating of a digital model of the structure which is than transformed into data which can be used by CNC machines. The final group work of NDS 2004students also follows this schema. This thesis is centered on its first element–computer aided architectural design.The aim of the research was to create a programming tool which generate linear construction grids for a cubic form and then optimize them according to given parameters. The data produced during this process is then visualized by digital models which can be evaluated by a designer as ready for production or can be changed in a further design process. Eventually, this data is an input for scripting tools creating production drawings for CNC machines. The thesis contains information about the mathematical description of the structure, methods of its generation, analysis and optimization. It deals also with problems connected with data exchange and storage. The effect of the work is presented by visualizations of digital models as well as by using rapid prototyping methods. Moreover, the most spectacular result of using tools presented in this thesis is the NDS2004 exhibition structure.

summary Virtual Design Studio students and teachers of architecture in Canada, Japan and United Arab Emirates worked on the central area of University of Baghdad and examined its main square by proposing designs ideas and projects while sharing dynamic web portal. The narrative aspect of the digital media redefines the nature of design practice by making the creative process more democratic and transparent. Communicating design progress across temporal and geographic borders we can publish it instantly and make design accessible at different stages of its development for the benefit of distant collaborators, as well as general public. Baghdad remains site of traumatic conflict. Approaching aftermath of this war, creates unique opportunity to challenge the role of students of design. Among issues raised by this studio were: While apart - we will share and design for the betterment of the future condition of man people. We will consider not only possible futures, but also importance of the tradition while constructing our proposals in hope for both peace and democracy. However, the ongoing Globalization patterns are subject to the growing reassessment by many. What is the role of the central square in the campus of University of Baghdad in the XXI century? How can architecture and new media contribute to the peace making under such a circumstance as Iraq is facing at present? These were fundamental questions that the students needed to deal with. This paper presents the dynamic collaborative environment as well as diverse Digital Democracy Wall projects formulated in this distributed situation.

As CAD in our faculty is integrated in the "Lehrstuhl für Hochbaustatik und Tragwerksplanung" (if we try to say it in English it would approximately be "institute of structural design"), we chose an example we are very familiar with because of its mathematical background - the cone sections: Circle, ellipse, parabola and hyperbola. If we start our trip two thousand years ago we only find the circle - or in very few cases the ellipse - in their use for the ground plan of greek or roman theaters - if you think of Greek amphitheaters or the Colosseum in Rome - or for the design of the cross section of a building - for example the Pantheon, roman aqueducts or bridges. With the rediscovery of the perspective during the Renaissance the handling of the ellipse was brought to perfection. May be the most famous example is the Capitol in Rome designed by Michelangelo Buonarotti with its elliptical ground plan that looks like a circle if the visitor comes up the famous stairway. During the following centuries - caused by the further development of the natural sciences and the use of new construction materials, i.e. cast-iron, steel or concrete - new design ideas could be realized. With the growing influence of mathematics on the design of buildings we got the division into two professions: Civil engineering and architecture. To the regret of the architects the most innovative constructions were designed by civil engineers, e.g. the early iron bridges in Britain or the famous bridges of Robert Maillard. Nowadays we are in the situation that we try to reintegrate the divided professions. We will return to that point later discussing possible solutions of this problem. But let us continue our 'historical survey demonstrating the state of the art we have today. As the logical consequence of the parabolic and hyperbolic arcs the hyperbolic parabolic shells were developed using traditional design techniques like models and orthogonal sections. Now we reach the point where the question comes up whether complex structures can be completely described by using traditional methods. A question that can be answered by "no" if we take the final step to the completely irregular geometry of cable- net-constructions or deconstructivistic designs. What we see - and what seems to support our thesis of the connection between design tools and the results of the design process - is, that on the one hand new tools enabled the designer to realize new ideas and on the other hand new ideas affected the development of new tools to realize them.

summary Fueled by long-standing dreams of both material efficiency and aesthetic liberation, robots have become part of mainstream architectural discourses, raising the question: How may we nurture an ethos of visual, tactile, and spatial exploration in technologies that epitomize the legacies of industrial automation—for example, the pursuit of managerial efficiency, control, and an ever-finer subdivision of labor? Reviewing and extending a growing body of research on architectural robotics pedagogy, and bridging a constructionist tradition of design education with recent studies of science and technology, this article offers both a conceptual framework and concrete strategies to incorporate robots into architectural design education in ways that foster a spirit of exploration and discovery, which is key to learning creative design. Through reflective accounts of three learning experiences, we introduce the notions “assisted automation” and “robotic embodiment” as devices to enrich current approaches to robot–human design, highlighting situated and embodied aspects of designing with robotic machines.

summary Sylva is an autonomous hydroponic garden, hanging in mid-air and maintained by two robots. Sylva was built for the Princesa of Asturias Foundation in Oviedo, Spain (Figure 1). The aim of the installation was to visualize a live and growing data set in architectural and geometric terms. For this, we designed a robotic garden that changes and grows according to this dataset. This indoor habitat combined various disciplines, including botany, computer vision, robotics, and architectural design. The synthesis of these interdisciplinary components into a cohesive landscape reflects current debates on ecology and the relationship between nature, machines, and automation (Figure 2). It further investigates the role of gardens and nature in the architecture domain. Currently, such a relationship has often been associated with practices of exploitation, domination, and taming of the natural (Blais 2022). Sylva, on the contrary, sees in the typology of the garden an opportunity to expand the term “ecology in architecture” towards new forms of technological mediation ( Derme and Mitterberger 2022).
