summary The actual shift of the teaching methods from teacher-centred expository methods, to learner-centred exploratory ones. The educational goals are no more the construction of a solid theory knowledge from which the behaviour is driven. It is the acquisition of capabilities and skills directly related to the professional activity. The consequence is that the teacher has the task of endowing the student not only with a large amount of documentation but also with at least suggestions of the way to use it. One of these suggestions is the deconstruction (in a literal and not philosophical sense) as a way of investigating the structure of buildings. In a first phase in order to acquire, through generalisation a systematic knowledge of the way the parts of a building (their subsystems) contribute to the global architectural organism. In a second phase in order to explore buildings of special interest aiming at mastering their peculiar solutions. An example of this method is presented, limited to the spatial analysis only both for brevity sake and for particular difficulties presented.

title A Tool for the Analysis of the Behaviour of Building Components: The Cellular Automation
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.1996.099
source Education for Practice [14th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9523687-2-2] Lund (Sweden) 12-14 September 1996, pp. 99-110
summary An implementation of a cellular automation is presented that allows the simulation of the behaviour of building components under diverse environment conditions. The tool has a wide range of applications because of the generality of its structure. The object on which it operates is represented as a set of cells each of which is defined, besides its geometrical dimension and position, by a set of variables and parameters. The work it performs consists in computing transitions from a state to another, i.e. the values variables and parameters take in each cell under the action of external agents and of internal laws of interaction between self As an example of its use an application is shown analysing the thermal behaviour of the connection of a curtain wall to a concrete floor.

summary The number of different designers with different competencies collaborating in a building project is today conspicuous. An undesired consequence is the possible rise of conflicts between decisions taken independently by more than one specialist on the same building object. The early detection of such conflicts is then one of the most important features in collaborative design. Moreover, of great interest would be the possibility not only of automatic detection but also of solution proposal of at least the most manageable of those conflicts. In this perspective smart models of building components could be very useful. This is possible giving the building elements, represented as objects, the specific intelligence. A simple example of this possibility is given in this paper. In a precedent work we proposed a way of managing elementary spatial conflicts between building components tending to occupy the same spaces. The automatic detection derived from the previous declaration of two levels of constraints (soft constraint and hard constraints) in such way that a violation of them could be immediately signaled to the actor wanting to take the decision triggering the conflict. In this paper the topic is the consequences of the rise of a spatial conflict (occupation of the same space) between a column of a spatial frame of columns and beams, and another building object of any sort subject to a soft or hard constraint. The procedure identifies the minimum displacement of the two objects, propagates the column displacement to the other structural elements connected to it and checks the feasibility of the new configuration of the structural schema both with regard to the possible rise of new conflicts and with the compliance to previous structural criteria.

title An Hypertext in Building Rehabilitation: A Case Study in Palermo
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.1995.029
source Multimedia and Architectural Disciplines [Proceedings of the 13th European Conference on Education in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe / ISBN 0-9523687-1-4] Palermo (Italy) 16-18 November 1995, pp. 29-36
summary Hypertext is an ideal tool to teach building design inasmuch as it allows both teacher driven and student self driven learning. It allows to link every type of informations (texts, sounds, images, films) with associative mechanisms much like those utilized by our brain. Hypertextes buikt up for teaching purposen can be usefully employed in professional occurrencies. An example is shown dealing with the rehabilitation of the Fiumetorto Palace in the historical centre of Palermo. It manages in a simple but efficient way the many complex interconnections between analysis of the state of decay, history, town planning rules and technology focusing all the information on the rehabilitation task.

summary The paper presents an approach to the problems of architectural design aided by Artificial Intelligence techniques that can solve the difficulties related to combinatorial explosion, often encountered in the past. Three expert systems, dubbed "reasoners", capable of some elementary design work and a hypothesis for their interaction have been developed. Reasoner A has an "analogical" view of space. A notion of conflict, managed by means of fuzzy logic, has been introduced. It corresponds, in an intuitive and straightforward fashion, to the common notion of conflict or contradiction in real space as a consequence of improper overlapping of actual physical objects or of their functional pertinence. Reasoner B works on formalized models of building objects. It designs new patterns from given patterns taken as defaults. Reasoner C picks up from an archive of patterns the one which best suits a list of given goals. Design is the result of interaction between the three reasoners. Finally, the proposed schema raises questions about formal structures ("images") and about the nature of culturally-linked options ("memory") on which some preliminary considerations are made. Prototypes of the reasoners are operating at the Instituto di Edilizia of the University of Ancona, Italy.

title Image Recognition: from Syntax to Semantics
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.1997.x.n7x
source Challenges of the Future [15th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9523687-3-0] Vienna (Austria) 17-20 September 1997
summary n a previous paper the authors presented an analyser of simple architectural images. It works at syntactical level inasmuch as it is able to detect the elementary components of the images and to perform on them some analyses regarding their reciprocal position and their combinations.

Here we present a second step of development of the analyser: the implementation of some semantic capabilities. The most elementary level of semantics is the simple recognition of each object present in the architectural image. Which, in turn means attributing to each object the name of the class of similar objects to which the single object is supposed to pertain. While at the syntactical level the pertinence to a class implies the identity of an object to the class prototype, at the semantic level this is not compulsory. Pertaining to the same class, that is having the same architectural meaning, can be objects having approximately the same shape. Consequently in order to detect the pertinence of an object to a class, that is giving it an architectural meaning, two things are necessary: a date base containing the class prototypes to which the recognized objects are to be assigned and a tool able to "measure" the difference of two shapes.

summary This paper describes a dynamic teaching model developed to explore new intellectual and theoretical directions of design generation. It utilizes shape grammars as a pedagogical tool for introducing the concept of design computing to graduate students of architecture without a background in computation theory. The teaching model has developed in two parallel run courses: 1-Introduction to Computational Logic in Design: a visual generative design tool shape grammar is used as a tool to teach design students computational logic, 2- Designing the Design: The design students are introduced with the new language and method of designing. Examples from the Computational Design graduate curriculum at Yildiz Technical University are given to illustrate explorations in this new teaching of design.

title A Microprocessor Revolution and the World Distribution of Income: A General Equilibrium Approach
source International Political Science Review. 1982. vol.3: pp. 434- 454 ; ill. includes bibliography
summary This article shows that even if the world economy is able to withstand and surmount the present world crisis, the combination of market forces and rapid technical change that would be the result of a microprocessor revolution will give rise to large shifts in the distribution of income within and between both rich and poor countries. Some developed and developing economies may be unable to join the move to new technologies. In a world governed by only economic forces, all countries, whether they choose to adopt new systems of production or not, will be affected. Indeed, whatever their degree of involvement, all countries are beginning to feel in varying degrees the chain reaction that reverberates through and between all sectors of their domestic and the world economies. To gain insights into interrelations between technological change and global markets, this article uses a special type of model -- a general equilibrium model -- that enables the study to focus on exactly these variables

summary Architectural manufacturing is a balancing act between production facility and a custom fabrication shop. Each project Zahner takes on is different from the last, and not likely to repeat. This means that workflows are designed and deployed for each project individually. We present Flash Manufacturing, a fabrication methodology we employ in the production of architectural elements for cutting-edge and computationally sophisticated buildings. By remixing manufacturing techniques and production spaces we are able to meet the novel challenges posed by fabricating and assembling hundreds of thousands of unique parts. We discuss methods for producing vastly different project types and highlight two building case studies: the Cornell Tech Bloomberg Center and the Petersen Automotive Museum. With this work, we demonstrate how design creativity is no longer at odds with reliable and cost-effective building practices. Zahner has produced hundreds of seminal buildings working with architects such as: Gehry Partners, Zaha Hadid, m0rphosis, Herzog & de Meuron, OMA, Steven Holl Architects, Studio Daniel Libeskind, Rafael Moneo, DS+R, Foster + Partners, Gensler, KPF, SANAA and many more. This paper disrupts conventional discourse surrounding manufacturing/construction methods by discussing the realities of mass customization—how glossy architectural products are forged through ad hoc inventive engineering and risk tolerance.

title Coordinating Atypical Architectural Precast Concrete Façades - Two categories
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2019.2.261
source Sousa, JP, Xavier, JP and Castro Henriques, G (eds.), Architecture in the Age of the 4th Industrial Revolution - Proceedings of the 37th eCAADe and 23rd SIGraDi Conference - Volume 2, University of Porto, Porto, Portugal, 11-13 September 2019, pp. 261-268
summary This research focuses on issues of coordination between designers and fabricators during early design. The aim of this work is to improve representations, enable more informed conversations, and streamline exchanges of digital models. In order to show the potential of the work, research is focused on architectural precast concrete facades. Previous work established methods for linking "global" and "local" parametric models of architectural intent and corresponding components, describing processes of mapping from individual custom panels to diagrammatic façade surfaces and vice-versa. Such mapping may be considered "direct," wherein individual panel boundaries - defined by surface patterning - allow simple mapping of data from global to local or from local to global descriptions. However, there are some buildings with architectural precast concrete façades which do not permit direct relationships between global and local descriptions. These atypical facades require "indirect" maps containing additional layers of information in order to coordinate global and local descriptions. This paper describes two categories of these indirect scenarios: "panelization" and "patterns across panels."
