title Generative CAD Systems
source Singapore: Carnegie Mellon University, 2005
summary In the new millennium, Computer Aided Design has emerged as the most potent technological innovation in design. As BIM promises to integrate design tasks vertically and horizontally through graceful data exchange, new frontiers appear to researchers and practitioners as potential watershed events of the next decade. Generative approaches, a venerable engagement of computational design, is emerging as one of these. The proceedings of the Generative CAD Symposium held at Carnegie Mellon University, both summarizes the three decades of work in this area and reveals the beginnings of research and application expected in this domain. After all, will designers be able to effortlessly and intelligently generate potential design solutions that respond to appropriate design requirements and designers’ intentions?

title Digital Historic Heritage: documenting of Pelourinho, Salvador - Bahia, Brazil, with 3D laser scanning technology
source SIGraDi 2005 - [Proceedings of the 9th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Lima - Peru 21-24 november 2005, vol. 2, pp. 673-678
summary This paper describes the Pelourinho Project realized past July in Salvador, during the 1st International Conference on 3D Laser Scanning for Heritage Documentation. The Pelourinho located at the historic center of Salvador, is an impressive wide set of buildings listed by UNESCO as World Heritage. The text contains a quickly overview about the 3D laser scanning technology, shows how data are captured and what they stored and what they means. The 3D laser scanning model, another kind of 3D geometric model is called point cloud and represents an excellent way to store data of some particular constructions. Because its irregular shapes it is very arduous to survey and represent these constructions by any other method. The point cloud model is an excellent way to represent with integrity and accuracy these particular complex shapes like the colonial baroque churches in Brazil. [Full paper in Portuguese]

summary At the present time the importance of the image of people plays a key role. Therefore many people who leave these standards wish to change their aesthetic face one, in occasions to look for characteristics that respond to the modern beauty, and in others, to try to solve a medical problem. In the work that is exposed here, the use of the present technological tools of design appears, like support to the scientific development that it makes possible an effectively learn more express and to the students of Odontolgy, improvement of the quality of the treatments of the doctors and help the patients to see beforehand the final results of the operations, avoiding to see disagreeable images. So, the support of the surgical procedures on systems CAD/CAM is making possible the enormous development of medical science, such form that are every time better, more comfortable to learn and are less traumatic for them. title RECONCILING COMPUTER AND HAND: THE CASE OF AUTHOR IDENTITY IN DESIGN PRESENTATIONS
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2005.013
source CAADRIA 2005 [Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / ISBN 89-7141-648-3] New Delhi (India) 28-30 April 2005, vol. 1, pp. 13-22
summary As computers were newly emerging in the field of architectural design, it was claimed that the impact of computers would change the way architects design and present. However, within the course of computer use in design, although the field of architectural practice might have been altered extremely, in architectural education there still seems to be a bond to conventional mind-hand-paper relation. One of the reasons for that bond is the fact that although being r 1000 elated to many technologies, architecture essentially positions itself around an artistic core that is still fed with conventional modes of creation. Architectural education aims at adopting and working on this very core. One of the major contributors in the formation of this core is the presence of author identity. This paper makes a critical approach to computers in terms of expressing author identity in design presentations especially during design education. We believe that the author identity is important in design education in terms of identifying the potential and skills of the student. Especially in design education the final step of design process turns out to be the presentation, unlike architectural practice where the presented design is actually built. Within this conception, two different studies were held in an educational environment with 160 design students and 20 design instructors. The results of both studies pointed at the fact that the digital opportunities that exist for design education should evolve around preserving and underlining the author identity in design presentations.

summary The realization of architecture, that is the building of the physical artifact, requires numerous collaborative participates that requires a communication network in order to realize the vision. All efforts to communicate a design idea prior to physical realization, that is manufacturing or construction, are forms of visualization (i.e. representation). Herein lies the fundamental problem, the designer(s) must en-vision, and communicate that which is to BE ... physical, yet is NOT... physical. In this paper, we will review the emerging Human-Computer-Interface and technology influences on process and product; here we find the “humanistic” component is a critical factor in the success of “digital” strategies.

title Urban Grammars: Towards Flexible Urban Design
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2005.491
source Digital Design: The Quest for New Paradigms [23nd eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9541183-3-2] Lisbon (Portugal) 21-24 September 2005, pp. 491-500
summary Traditional urban plans have definitive design systems, without the flexibility required to deal with the complexity and change that characterise contemporary urban societies. To provide urban plans with increased flexibility, it is proposed a design methodology capable of producing various design solutions instead of a specific definitive design. The methodology uses shape grammars as a process for generating urban design. In this approach, design becomes a system of solutions rather than a specific one. Through the analyses of a group of urban plans, a design methodology was sketched in which rules are used to enable more flexibility. These plans where chosen for their perceived qualities in terms of language, planning efficiency, and latent flexibility. As a result, a four-phased methodology was identified and thus, proposed for designing urban plans. This methodology was then combined with shape grammars and tested in a design studio setting. Students were asked to use the methodology and shape grammars as auxiliary instruments in the design of a flexible plan for a new town. In the following year, to simulate real-world conditions and oblige students to consider urban ordering and scale, work was structured differently. First, students were asked to develop a rule-based urban plan as in the previous year. Second, they were asked to conceive a detail plan for a sector of an urban plan defined by another group of students following its rules. The plans were then analysed with the goal of refining the methodology. Results show that shape grammars produce urban plans with non-definitive formal solutions, while keeping a consistent spatial language. They also provide plans with explicit and implicit flexibility, thereby giving future designers a wider degree of freedom. Finally, they provide students with a concrete methodology for approaching urban design and foster the development of additional designing skills.

summary University faculty -adult culture- work from the logic that goes through their speech, didactic model and strategies, providing special links with: the aim of knowledge, transmission mechanisms and technological medium. Students -young culture- receive and deal with knowledge mechanisms from a new logic. In a multimedia framework they establish interpretations using technological medium from semantic decodification. Young graduates, assistants, studio leaders -intermediate culture- coming from traditional learning models with acquired abilities in digital media, are a “potential interface” between both cultures. The impact between fields and cultures implies limitations and risks that may encourage change. A discourse about “new didactic configurations” from the point of view of these three cultures makes possible the exploration of other ways of teaching. Therefore the articulation of teacher-student interrelations and media promotes the development of teaching-learning techniques. [Full paper in Spanish]

summary This work considers affectation produced in disciplinarian codes by digital image, understood as a sign, and its influence in social codes in context of a hyper communicated macro society. Disciplinarian codes construct the significant structure of environment; affect behaviors in the identity sense, making comprehensive the habitable shapes and the individual and collective mechanisms of attribution of significance. The architect operates above them and in a dialectic action, connecting social and disciplinarian codes. The conformation of formal laws, generated in the context of the virtuality and the image, proposes to architects a renewal of language, working in a synthetic and ambiguous world. This paper adds to the theoretical frame of a current investigation, and its objective is to contribute to comprehension of modes in which, the electronic paradigm has been installed, in the relationship between the different actors that update the codes and ratify its dynamic role. title BEYOND MODELLING: AVANT-GARDE COMPUTER TECHNIQUES IN RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS.
source I Jornadas de Investigacion en Construccion, Madrid, 2-4 June, 2005.
summary If the result of computer innovations can be interpreted as an emerging “difference” in the quality of constructed space, then in order to truly understand what future applications may be regarding architecture at present, we should look at what advanced functions are available in the process of designing forms and space (DeLuca and Nardini, 2002). Recently the so called parametric approach, a technique for describing a large class of designs with a small description in programming code, has become a focus of attention in architectural computing. In this paper, we reflect on the current use of parametric tools using real case studies as well as our own proof of concept parametric programmes and report on how the avant-garde computer techniques may help to increase the quality of residential building.

source Proceedings of the Generative Arts conference, Milan, 2005
summary Marshall McLuhan once said in his book Understanding Media that ‘Environments are invisible. Their ground rules evade easy perception.’ Evasive perception leads to fuzzy representations as shown through Kevin Lynch’s mental maps and the Situationists’ psycho-geographies. Eventually, spatial representations have to be described through abstractions based on some embedded rules of environmental interaction. These rules and methods of abstraction serve to understand cognition of space. The Centre for Evolutionary Computing in Architecture (CECA) at the University of East London has focused for the last 5 years on methods of cognitive spatial descriptions, based largely on either behavioural patterns or topological machines. The former being agent based, the latter neural network based. This year’s selection of student work constitutes a combination of cognitive agents + perceptive networks, and comprises three theses.

summary The study of DNA of artifact and the development leading to its use in the field of industrial production of a single piece is now a common feature in the syllabus of the degree in Industrial Design at Faculty of Architecture “Luigi Vanvitelli” of SUN. The Generative Design Laboratory is where this process is carried out and includes the PROGEOR project for Generative Jewels Design. The experience acquired in the Generative Design Laboratory has developed along the lines of THE SINGLE PIECE, a product which combines the uniqueness of a handcrafted artefact with mass production methods. The development of project control technologies and also production technologies enables real-life experimentation of these hypotheses to be conducted.

title Fabrication with Residual Wood through Scanning Optimization and Robotic Milling
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2024.1.025
source Kontovourkis, O, Phocas, MC and Wurzer, G (eds.), Data-Driven Intelligence - Proceedings of the 42nd Conference on Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe (eCAADe 2024), Nicosia, 11-13 September 2024, Volume 1, pp. 25–34
summary The project deals with the use of residual wood of tree stumps and roots through scanning, optimization and robotic milling. Wood logging residue makes up to 50 percent of the trees harvested biomass. (Hakkila and Parikka 2002). Among prevailing strategies is leaving residue on site, and recovering residue for bioenergy. (Perlack and others 2005). The project explores the third strategy, using parts of the logging residue for fabrication, which may reduce the overall amount of wood logging volume. Furthermore approach aims for applying residue in its natural form and taking advantage of specific local characteristics of wood (Desch and Dinwoodie 1996). The project applies the strategy on working with stump and roots of an oak tree. Due to considerations of scale, available milling technics and available resources, chosen goal of the approach is to create a functioning chair prototype. Among the problems of the approach is the complex shape of the residue, uneven quality of wood, varying humidity and contamination with soil. After cleaning and drying, the stump is scanned and a 3D model is created. The 3D model od a stump is confronted with a 3D modelled limits of the goal typology (height, width, length, sitting surface area and overal volume of a chair) and topological optimization algorithm is used to iteratively reach the desired geometry. Unlike in established topological optimization proces, which aims for a minimal volume, the project attempts to achieve required qualities with removing minimal amount of wood. Due to geometric complexity of both stump and goal object, milling with an 6axis industrial robotic arm and a rotary table was chosen as a fabrication method. The object was clamped to the board (then connected to a rotary table) in order to provide precise location and orientation in 3D space. The milling of the object was divided in two parts, with the seating area milled in higher detail. Overall process of working with a residual wood that has potential to be both effective and present aesthetic quality based on individual characteristics of wood. Further development can integrate a generative tool which would streamline the design and fabrication proces further.

source SIGraDi 2005 - [Proceedings of the 9th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Lima - Peru 21-24 november 2005, vol. 1, pp. 394-399
summary In contrast to the traditional models of design processes based on the abstract manipulation of objects, the new digital media arena provides to architecture an interesting territory of experimentation characterized by non-linear design processes capable to articulate spatial requirements and social organizations on time. In this sense, the speculation through a diagrammatic system proposes a change focused on design as a network of processes. According to this, this paper purpose is to investigate the validity of these arguments through the use of Voronoi Diagram as design tool into the context of Create_Space research agenda of the AAD[R]L 2004-2005.
