summary Architecture design education is evolved in respond to the emergence of information technologies as well as globalization. In the new era, digital design education is becoming a design platform to integrate technology and design. This paper aims to provide overviews of digital architectural design education. Therefore, this paper proposes a framework to examine the focus of digital design education and the relationship among (1) design contents, (2) digital technologies and tools, and (3) design theory and methodologies in digital design studios. The attempts in National Cheng Kung University in the past 10 years provide the foundation for observation and discussion. The pedagogy and approaches are examined, and the trend and potential directions are reported.

summary The aim of this research project is to develop a methodological process that allows the designer to assemble and create various scenarios representing an urban environment through the utilization of economical computer based methods. During the last decade different techniques have been developed to address the needs of visualisation of urban areas many being based on photographic and photogrammetric systems. The demand for 3-D urban models continues to grow and although new technologies have undoubtedly reduced the time needed for the construction of a 3D model, there are still some remaining problems related to data quality and the level of the dimensional accuracy. On the basis that these problems are primarily related to software and hardware constraints and in conjunction with the fact that the richness and complexity of an urban space is difficult to represent in a 3D context, there is a growing interest in the modelling of the urban fabric which is not dependant on heavily capitalised technology for its data. The core principle of the current research project is summarised in the process of deploying a mechanism, which will allow the visualisation of urban form without loosing its quality and architectural characterisation. This technique suggests that a selection of various building types can be collected and described by their architectural elements, textures, scale and dimensions. From each group of buildings a library of fragmented architectural components can be then derived. The accomplishment of this methodology is the formulation of a 'grammar' comprised of a characteristic ‘syntax’ and its associated ‘vocabulary’. Therefore the expected outcome of this research is an approach that would allow the designer to create easily and quickly not only any desired building but additionally any imaginary cityscape.

summary We investigate the creation and reinterpretation of an architectural design process using a variety of digital and physical media. We study how tools for design influence perception, comprehension and creation of spatial volumes within both Virtual Environments (VE) and physical realms. We explain how designers translate spatial volumes and communicate architectural design ideas by using VE and conventional models. In a series of reinterpretation of architectural meanings we examine the translation of threedimensional design from virtual to tangible depictions and vice versa. We conduct a design-studio in order to explore issues of quality, understanding, communication and building of architectural compositions. VE can be an environment for design distinguishable and facilitating reality. We test this statement by interchanging both realms to that extent that the boundaries of each one are nearly dismantled. Virtuality and reality are both used in alternative formand design-finding exercises in order to gain an overall conclusive design.

A definitive need exists for a system that is rapidly deployable and scalable while fostering individuality within the larger rebuilt community. This paper describes the relationship of digital fabrication to materials and design rules by example. The paper ends with different iterations of the Instant house and an explanation of its construction method and execution.

title Integrating expertise and parametric analysis for a data-driven decision-making practice

summary This study explores the integration of expert design intuition and parametric data analysis. While traditional professional design expertise helps to rapidly frame relevant aspects of the design problem and produce viable solutions, it has limitations in addressing multi-criteria design problems with conflicting objectives. On the other hand, parametric analysis, in combination with data analysis methods, helps to construct and analyze large design spaces of potential design solutions and tradeoffs, within a given frame. We explore a process whereby expert design teams propose a design using their current intuitive and analytical methods. That design is then further optimized using parametric analysis. This study specifically explores the specification of geometric and material properties of building envelopes for two typically conflicting objectives: daylight quality and energy consumption. We compare performance of the design after initial professional design exploration, and after parametric analysis, showing consistently significant performance improvement after the second process. The study explores synergies between intuitive and systematic design approaches, demonstrating how alignment can help expert teams efficiently and significantly improve project performance.

summary This paper targets to report the experience of a virtual design studio called Habitar a Cidade, or Living within the City. From march to july 2004, six brazillian universities. teachers and students groups in Architecture, living in five different brazillian states, were gathered by internet-based communication, and all of their design products have been displayed in specially designed websites. Furthermore, different ways of communicating have been used: messenger chats, e-mails, newsgroups, including the exchange of graphic files. The challenge of this experience was to put in relation schools with inequal levels both in computer equipments and computing design capacities. This paper aims at reading in a very preliminary way the relationship between the use of internet means and the studio.s activities . main goals. As a major conclusion, and despite some organization difficulties, the low cost of the experience and the relative easyness of its development are great reasons to redo it.

This paper presents a huge ongoing research which intends to discuss, on a conceptual basis, those relationships in different ways. The goal of the research work is to collect and to examine data produced by the intervention in a real community, at Cidade Tiradentes district, in the city of San Paolo. A collaborative multi-users interfaces is being specially designed, supported by different kinds of electronic equipments. The project aims at analyzing the utilization of those information and communication technologies, and its impact in poor communities. As a hypothesis, we want to verify if the access to informations will be able to make larger the social interactions and to improve the creation of new services, in order to guarantee a better quality of life.

summary This paper presents the process and outcomes of a thematic winter school on designing sustainable soundscapes. It aims to present a new parametric tool: Esquis’Sons! that has been initiated during a French research project on sustainable sound environment and then developed as part of Theo Marchal’s PhD. Combining Rhinoceros and Grasshopper, the Esquis’Sons! tool has allowed the integration of the sound dimension during the design phase of architectural spaces. The thematic school aims to test the validity of this tool through experimenting it with multidisciplinary teams involving architecture, urban design, acoustics, art, landscape and sociology. We have chosen to use this methodology on two urban districts located in Grenoble, France in order to auralize in real time the different intervention scenarios proposed by participants for ameliorating the experience of sound in the two districts.

summary Since the 80s, several researches have developed the theoretical notions of sound effects, sound proxemy, city sound identities, sound comfort, architectural sound prototypes which were meant to help designers consider sound in their projects. Nevertheless, taking care of the inherent sound dimensions in architectural urban projects remains an unresolved challenge. The researches of the last 30 years have shown how the sound environment qualities are forgotten in favour of visual qualities. This article presents a new method dedicated to generating simple sound sketches for architectural conception while preserving the complexity of acoustic simulation. This paper argues that the Esquis'sons! sound sketch tool reconfigures architectural design by considering an innovative view its the temporality, allowed by numeric designing tools able to intervene and offer a continuous feedback regarding sound environment.

summary This paper investigates the potential and implications of using naturally occurring material phenomena as a connecting mechanism for solid timber components. Proposed and discussed are connections based on anisotropic shrinkage and geometrical variability of trees. Using the notion of material agency in design, following the bio-cybernetic and biomimetic frameworks, solutions are devised to reduce energy usage, environmental pollution and utilise low-processed material. Finally, consequences of the fusion of the natural (analogue) and the digital realms are discussed, with an example of a workflow integrating inherent material traits with digital manufacture.

summary Complexity as a result of improved design capabilities through the use of computer tools was introduced in the architectural debate since these became irreplaceable. On the other hand, not every designer is genuinely aware of the logical implications that the use of these tools may entail. Used as a simple emulation of enhanced traditional design tools—drawings and models, they do not alter the process of design significantly. However, the potential of such tools beyond their instrumentality introduces designers into the realm of digital consciousness. This paper analyzes complexity as an inherent quality of computer aided architectural design in relation to four different digitally conscious design strategies. First, the increase of complexity involved in digital architectural designs because of their potentiality to manage enormous amounts of differentiated information. Second, the complexity inherent to an open form such as parametric or generative designs may be defined. Third, the use of the computer as a smart partner involved in the design process —i.e., form finding strategies— rather than as a simple efficient machine able to repeat our abilities faster and more effectively in certain roles of the design process. Finally, it analyzes the possibility of generating parameterized typologies as a result of the openness of form, as well as the increased complexity that randomness may introduce in algorithmic design. The paper concludes with reflections on complexity vs. simplexity considering the fact that the simplicity characteristic of Modernism aesthetics and constructive values collide with the baroque formal complexity achieved in generative design.

summary Digital fabrication has become the true counterpoint to computer aided design in architecture. Thanks to new C.A.D./C.A.M. technologies architectural design can now manufacture complex buildings that only a decade ago could have been almost impossible to develop. This convergence between C.A.D./C.A.M. technologies is producing a trend from construction to manufacturing. Arbitrariness of architectural form should not be confused with arbitrariness of architectural design, the latter being contradictory with the very essence of design. Conventional or digital architecture must achieve design consistency and must rely on architecture’s basic principle, that of necessity. New materiality is a term being coined in relation to digital fabrication and the way it should address materiality in architecture. Innovation in the use of conventional materials, the ways in which they may be manufactured or tiled, as well as the emergence of new materials may outline what new materiality is about.
