summary In this paper we outline a strategy of structured reflection to improve reflection by students in a course on the implication of CAAD, design theory, and design methodology. Earlier editions of the course showed that students often did not evolve their learning beyond a checklist level. Reflection is an important mechanism to improve learning from design situations. After a consideration of the main approaches to design reflection, we take up Schön’s notion of reflection and provide support for structured reflection in CAAD education, based on earlier experiences with structured question lists in a civil engineering course. Findings after the first year’s run show a deeper level of reflection on a more elaborate level.

Therefore many people who leave these standards wish to change their aesthetic face one, in occasions to look for characteristics that respond to the modern beauty, and in others, to try to solve a medical problem. In the work that is exposed here, the use of the present technological tools of design appears, like support to the scientific development that it makes possible an effectively learn more express and to the students of Odontolgy, improvement of the quality of the treatments of the doctors and help the patients to see beforehand the final results of the operations, avoiding to see disagreeable images. So, the support of the surgical procedures on systems CAD/CAM is making possible the enormous development of medical science, such form that are every time better, more comfortable to learn and are less traumatic for them. summary This paper investigates the impact of Tablet PCs on the workflow in an undergraduate design studio. We examined how well the students adapted the Tablet PC into their day-to-day design work and evaluated the appropriateness of the Tablet PC as a common digital tool used in an architectural design studio. This research involved observation of student behavior during the semester and the conducting of a survey measuring various aspects of the students’ use of the computers. A more specific goal was to compare the effectiveness of the pen versus the mouse as input devices for a three-dimensional modeling task in terms of both task time and strategies. Our assumption was that a change in input mode would affect the strategies and the performance. The results of a within-subjects, repeated-measures experiment carried out to elicit differences in input devices are discussed.

summary The research paper exemplifies a novel information integrated design technique developed at ONL (Oosterhuis and Lenard), Netherlands, specifically appropriated for envisaging complex geometric forms. The ‘informed design technique’, apart from being highly instrumental in conceptualizing and generating the geometric component constituting architectural form in a parametric manner, is also efficiently utilized for precise computer aided manufacturing and construction of the speculated form. Geometric complexities inherent in contemporary architectural constructs and the time spent in appropriation of such topologies, fueled the ‘informed design’ approach, which caters to issues of timely construction, precision oriented design and production (visual and material) and parametric modeling attuned to budgetary fluctuations. This design-research approach has been tested and deployed by ONL, for conceiving ‘the Acoustic Barrier’ project, Utrecht Leidsche Rijn in the Netherlands and is treated as a generic case for exemplifying the ‘informed design’ technique in this research paper. The design methodology encourages visualizing architectural substantiations from a systems perspective and envisages upon a rule based adaptive systems approach involving extrapolation of contextual dynamics/ground data in terms of logical ‘rules’. These rules/conditionalities form the basis for spawning parametric logistics to be mapped upon geometric counterparts exemplifying the conception. The simulated parametric relations bind dimensional aspects (length, width, height etc.) of the geometric construct in a relational manner, eventually culminating in a 3D spatial envelope. This evolved envelope is subsequently intersected with a ‘parametric spatio-constructive grid’, creating specific intersecting points between the two. The hence extorted ‘point cloud’ configuration serves as a generic information field concerning highly specific coordinates, parameters and values for each individual point/constructive node it embodies. The relations between these points are directly linked with precise displacements of structural profiles and related scaling factors of cladding materials. Parallel to this object oriented modeling approach, a detailed database (soft/information component) is also maintained to administer the relations between the obtained points. To be able to derive constructible structural and cladding components from the point cloud configuration customized Scripts (combination of Lisp and Max scripts) process the point cloud database. The programmed script-routines, iteratively run calculations to generate steel-wireframes, steel lattice-structure and cladding panels along with their dimensions and execution drawing data. Optimization-routines are also programmed to make rectifications and small adjustments in the calculated data. This precise information is further communicated with CNC milling machines to manifest complex sectional profiles formulating the construct hence enabling timely and effective construction of the conceptualized form.

This will allow an academic program of formative continuity. summary The goal of this research is to describe a methodology of architectural design by using digital technology with three-dimensional interactive simulation in multi-user virtual worlds. In addition, this study will focus on the application of this method in the workshops at the School of Architecture in the University of Zulia. With this proposal, it is possible to integrate many users, in real time, from different locations on the same virtual world in Internet. In the same way, each visitor is able to interact and modify the virtual world using virtual menus while sharing ideas or modifications regarding the design of the project. This strategy allows modeling, visualizing, developing and evaluating the designed projects during the conceptual and parametric phase in the process of design. summary This paper presents the advancements of the Urbamedia project which was designed as part of a research program at the Center CAO (Creation computer assist), School of Architectural Design and Urbanism, University of Buenos Aires, which was led by the valued master and advisory professor Architect Arturo F. Montagu. This proposal of the city of Buenos Aires on the Mayo Avenue expands the original historical fragment presented between the following two referenced representative landmarks: The Two Congresses Square and the Mayo Square. It continues with the advancement of methodologies and techniques implemented in a system of “integrated visualization and communication” for the development of a VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) 3D virtual non-immersive and interactive vision. It also incorporates the development of a “foundation of digitally integrated knowledge” with fragments of central areas from other surrounding cities as well as interfaced phenomenological situations. The application of digital VRML technology has allowed for thoroughly researching the processes through dynamic simulation of specific urban fragments (Mayo Avenue within Buenos Aires) and the cities that are also participating in the project. summary The Nâgara tradition of temple building created a rich corpus of Latina (single-spired) temples spread across Northern India between the fifth and thirteenth centuries. Computing methods offer a distinct methodology for reconstructing the genesis and evolution of geometry in this tradition over time. This paper reports a hybrid technique, comprising three distinct computations for recovering and explaining the geometry of temples. The application of the technique enables scholars to bring together fragments of evidence, construe “best-fit” strategies and unearth implicit or hidden relationships. The advantage of this approach is that changes in assumptions and testing of geometric alternatives can be easily simulated from multiple sources of information, such as texts, sacred diagrams and individual temples.

summary In the necessity to fortify the inhabitants’ decisions in the transformation of their own habitats, it was opened an investigation line about design and production of cartographic maps and models as part of the participative management device in urban environmental projects. In that stage it worked with organizations orientated to improve socio-environmental situation in indigent neighborhoods and settlements. This investigation is part of the UBAC and T Project of the Science and Technique Secretariat of the University of Buenos Aires during the last four years, consisting in an exploration of new professional sceneries for the graphic design management. In this report we present a model in which it is explored the outstanding variables in the design of this elements and its interactions in the course of the project, specially, the decisions related to the technological matter. summary This paper presents an on-going research aimed at designer support in the conceptual stages of architectural design. It is argued that collaboration plays an important role at every stage of the design process. Extending Schön's seminal theory of 'design as a conversation', the support of the conceptual architectural design process is proposed as a dialogue between the designer and the computational agents wherein the agents adopt the role of design team members. The dialogue is theoretically aimed at triggering the experiential memory of the designer and associating significant experiences from different domains of the design problem to stimulate creative thinking. The paper presents an outline of the proposed model for a design-conversation system implementing computational agents in a blackboard architecture environment.

summary Until some years ago the discussion about the role of technology inside architecture was centered almost exclusively in the constructive environment. However with the development of digital technology, an impact has been generated on operations, design methods and working methodology, besides offering new possibilities to the architectural imagination. The technology of information has not only incorporated a series of new instruments but also an arsenal of methodological support resources to the designer, modifying the working model, it ways to perceive, anticipate and conceive an architectural project as it was traditionally made during centuries. Within this scenario, the changes hat would be taking place due to the inclusion of the digital media in the architectural enviroment, as much as in the “project language” as in the project process structure, integrating such concepts as movement, time and information, constitute the main reason of this investigation. summary Learning Management Systems (LMS) embody spaces that combine Virtual Classrooms, learning communities, repositories of educational resources and communication devices. The use by faculty members and students, in a campus containing the schools of Architecture, Design and Geography, of Open Source LMS MOODLE, during the years 2005-2006, was assessed. An analysis of the Digital Vestiges, the metadata in the logs database, distinguished between the levels of informative and communicational interaction. The results draw attention to a trend, similar to previous measurements in Latin America, of more use of ICT educational resources for informational purposes than communicational interactions between teachers and students.

summary This article aims to describe the ephemeral qualities that typography acquires in the digital context, caused by the polyvalence of the algorithmic code, which, from generative programming, allows the user to interact with the typographic object. These reflection are realized through the study of four projects: “Lettree” (2004), “Pyrographie” (2005), “Falling in Love” (2016) and “He liked Thick Word Soup” (2014). The observations were made by drawing a comparison between the concept of “matter” in the computational scenario proposed by the design philosopher Vilém Flusser (2015) and the quality of “fluidity” observed in the images created by digital generative programs.

(A New Digital Instrument), an open source software project, has objective to develop a run-time environment with the focus on the applications for the networked international and cross-disciplinary production in the creative sphere of architecture, urban planning, design and net.art. It is a digital environment which opens the possibilities to generate advanced projects in a networked society. This new working tools will increase the creativity, productivity and competitiveness of the involved actors by drawing upon and developing technologies for virtual, augmented and mixed realities. A.N.D.I. has two basic aspects. On the one hand it is a database driven collaborative environment and on the other hand it will enable the development of future software and tools for networked creative collaboration.

summary We use linkographs as a means to examine single and double loop learning within three designed settings. Two types of learning are dynamic processes related to design process. The linkograph is a technique to examine the inter-connective pattern of design moves. Extending our previous analysis of design communications, we investigate the extent to which Schön's design process consisting of “framing-moving-reflecting” can be identified in communications. The linkographs identify learning loops, the results support prior findings that distal text based communication, although less extensive, is richer in design exchanges; here richer learning is also identified.

title Perceptual and Cognitive Factors that Influence Orientation in Computer Generated Real Architectural Space

summary This study presents results from an experiment that concerns spatial perception and cognition in virtual environments. It also includes the effects of how the development of a simulated virtual space can change perception and cognition of a real building perceived only through architectural drawings and photographs. In the experiment each student was shown external and internal 360° images, representing nodes in virtual space, of the same virtual building. Two different groups of students were formed. The first group was shown photorealistic rendered images, while the other group the same images with non-photorealistic representation. Differences in orientation tendencies of the participating students, as well as statistical results from these experiments were tested and are presented in this paper. It was found that there was a statistically significant tendency of the students towards larger scatter in more luminous virtual space as well as a tendency to visit lit parts of virtual space.

summary Traditionally, architecture in its design process employs physical matter, requires physical presence and relies on real world environment using conventional methods of 2D depictions such as paper and pen or 3D representations such as physical models and communicates design ideas in verbal or text-based form. The conventional design process, for example an interior design, a residential house, a commercial complex or even urban design projects, follows the same hierarchy of activities. Efforts are made to the satisfaction of both parties to give the ideas of a physical shape through sketches, drafts and models which may take weeks even months. Finally the project gets its final shape in a working drawing, 3D visualisation or model making. This process is time consuming and somewhat redundant. In recent years technology has offered architects a new tool - the virtual environment. Architects use virtual environment increasingly as device of communication and presentation of design intensions. Virtual environment enables users to interact in real-time with design but unfortunately have not been used widely in the process of design development. The aim of this paper is to investigates the relationship between present design process and the emerging technology of virtual reality, establish a relationship between the two and its influence on architecture to form a new translated design process and communication, an interface between architect and client.
