title The language of design: Spatial cognition and spatial language in parametric design
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 14 - no. 3, 277-288
summary This article develops a new research framework and method combining cognitive and linguistic approaches to investigate parametric design. At the core of this new approach is a dual-coding system for protocol analysis, which can formally capture both cognitive and linguistic characteristics of the design process. In this article, the method is applied to the analysis of the results of a design experimental undertaken by a set of Australian and Swedish architects working individually in a parametric environment. The results of the experiment demonstrate the effectiveness of the dual-coding system and, with the support of linkography, facilitate the in-depth exploration of design cognition and its relationship to spatial language. This method directly contributes to a new insight into the role of language in design.

title Exploring Design Strategy in Parametric Design to Support Creativity
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2013.489
source Open Systems: Proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2013) / Singapore 15-18 May 2013, pp. 489-498
summary This paper deals with the generative and evolutionary aspects of parametric design. We aim to provide a better understanding of individual design strategies to support creativity in parametric design via protocol analysis. An in-depth analysis conceptualises subjects’ creative strategies into two models: problem-driven strategy and solution-driven strategy. The solution-driven strategy progress design in the solution space resulted in the highest value in the level of creativity. This is one of potential aspects of parametric design. Exploring design strategies in parametric design contributes to its effective use.

title Understanding Cognitive Activities in Parametric Design
source Global Design and Local Materialization[Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures / ISBN 978-3-642-38973-3] Shanghai, China, July 3-5, 2013, pp. 38-49.
summary Parametric design offers a new paradigm in the field of ComputerAided Design; a paradigm focused on the potential for producing design variations. However, despite this potential, the cognitive activities associated with parametric design are not well understood. The authors of this paper present a formal method for capturing cognitive activities via protocol analysis. To support the interpretation of this method, this paper evaluates creativity implicit in design products by way of a consensual assessment technique. The findings identify two cognitive activities (‘making generation’ and ‘changing existing parameters’) as potential critical to divergent thinking and the restructuring of design components. These activities facilitate the generative aspects of parametric design. The paper concludes with a discussion of three cognitive levels (physical, perceptual and conceptual) that support an understanding of cognitive activities in parametric design.

title Parametric design strategies for the generation of creative designs
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 12 - no. 3, 263-282
summary As one of the emerging Computer-Aided Design (CAD) technologies for digital design and visualisation in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) domain, parametric design potentially offers an innovative way of generating new design solutions. Despite this potential, design strategies associated with algorithmic scripting are not well understood. This paper provides a comprehensive understanding of individual design strategies supporting creative solutions in parametric design, using the combined application of protocol analysis and Consensual Assessment Technique (CAT). The article examines the generative and evolutionary aspects of parametric design that play an important role in the generation of creative designs. An in-depth analysis conceptualises designers' parametric design strategies into problem-forwarding strategy and solution-reflecting strategy. The solution-reflecting strategy focusing on the solution space of designing has potential to produce creative solutions by parametric design. A more in-depth understanding of parametric design strategies supports its effective adaptation to better serve the needs of digital design and visualisation in the AEC industry

title Principles of CAD/CAM/CAE Systems
source New York: Addison-Wesley 1999
summary An Introduction to CAD/CAM/CAE is a timely text with coverage of many modern topics, including: rapid prototyping, virtual engineering, NT-based solid modeling systems, and Web-related issues. This book provides balanced coverage of CAD/CAM (with slightly more emphasis on CAD topics) and bonus coverage of computer-aided engineering (CAE). This book's emphasis on the integration of three related disciplines-CAD, CAM, and CAE-makes it a great theoretical introduction to all subjects from geometric representation to the most sophisticated CAE subjects. Many illustrations and references ground the theory in practical examples. The book also features a unique illustration of the whole product development process through a practical case study that gives readers a clear idea how CAD, CAM, and CAE systems are integrated to accelerate the product development process. This book is carefully targeted toward today's students; topics are introduced in a concise, efficient manner, with mathematical terminology that is kept to a minimum. A background in programming, calculus, and matrix and vector algebra is helpful when using this text.

title SpaceMaker - Creating Space by Sketching It
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.acadia.2003.311
source Connecting >> Crossroads of Digital Discourse [Proceedings of the 2003 Annual Conference of the Association for Computer Aided Design In Architecture / ISBN 1-880250-12-8] Indianapolis (Indiana) 24-27 October 2003, pp. 311-323
summary Creating space is the essence of architectural design. Architects actually work with three-dimensional (3-D) space, although two-dimensional (2-D) drawings are perhaps the most commonly used design medium. It is thus valuable to help architects truly see 3-D space, while making drawings in 2-D. In addition, architects usually use symbols in their drawings to identify architectural concepts. By recognizing the symbols, it is possible to identify architectural configurations of the design. This paper introduces a symbol-based modeling tool—SpaceMaker—that allows architects to make freehand floor plans and apply symbols to identify different functional spaces. SpaceMaker then converts those floor plans into 3-D models according to the symbols.

title SpaceMaker: A Symbol-based Three-dimensional Computer Modeling Tool for Early Schematic Development of the Architectural Design
source University of Washington, Design Machine Group
summary Designing architecture is an action of creating space. Architects start designing by making twodimensional (2-D) drawings in order to explore alternatives of spatial arrangement. However, architects are actually working with three-dimensional (3-D) space. They see 3-D space in their mind’s eye when making sketches in 2-D. It is thus valuable to help designers truly see 3-D space during designing. In addition, different spaces may have different functions and configurations of architectural components. Architects usually use text labels in their drawings to identify architectural concepts. They identify the function of space and remind themselves of the proposed configuration of architectural elements when labeling each space with a symbol. By recognizing the text label, it is possible to identify the architectural configuration of the space. Therefore, it is possible to create a 3-D modeling tool based on the recognition of labels in freehand sketches. This thesis introduces a symbol-based 3-D modeling tool – the SpaceMaker – that allows designers to make freehand floor-plan drawings to explore the initial concept of spatial layout and allows users to apply labels to identify different types of space. Finally, the program converts those floor plans into 3-D models according to the labels. In the SpaceMaker, a designer predefines a label by assigning it four boundary elements that encircle a space. When the designer draws the label in the sketch floor plan, the SpaceMaker then recognizes the label and constructs the space based on the defined boundary condition in a VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) format that enables the designer to view the 3-D space through a VRML enabled web browser.

title Form, Style and Function - A Constraint-Based Generative System for Apartment Façade Design
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2006.874
source Communicating Space(s) [24th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9541183-5-9] Volos (Greece) 6-9 September 2006, pp. 874-883
summary This paper describes the development of a constraint-based generative system (FSF system) to support the design of middle and high-rise apartment façades from architectural plans. Floor plan and façade designs are heavily interrelated, and, sometimes, the plan constrains the façade design during the design process. This relationship lends itself to apply constraint-based systems and we have designed the system to connect intelligently between apartment plan and façade. In our system, we define constraints into three categories: structural form, architectural style and function. We use genetic algorithm to generate plausible alternatives quickly and augmented by a constraint-based system, façades can be generated and modified much more easily in terms of real-time visual feedback for checking violence of the constraints and of dealing with updates smoothly through intelligent connecting plans to façades.

title Strength Guided Motion
source Computer Graphics. ACM, August, 1990. vol. 24: pp. 253-262 : ill. includes bibliography
summary A methodology and algorithm are presented that generate motion imitating the way humans complete a lifting task under various loading conditions. The path taken depends on 'natural' parameters: the figure geometry, the given load, the final destination, and especially, the strength model of the agent. Additional user controllable parameters of the motion are the comfort of the action and the perceived exertion of the agent. The algorithm uses this information to incrementally compute a motion path of the end-effector moving the load. It is therefore instantaneously adaptable to changing force, loading, and strength conditions. Various strategies are used to model human behavior that compute the driving torques as the situation changes. The algorithm runs in near-real time and offers an agent-dependent toolkit for fast path prediction. Example are presented for various tasks

source Em‘body’ing Virtual Architecture: The Third International Conference of the Arab Society for Computer Aided Architectural Design (ASCAAD 2007), 28-30 November 2007, Alexandria, Egypt, pp. 587-594
summary The paper addresses the influence of digital technology on architectural design and production, particularly considering the possibilities of sound for the design and conception of architecture based on the dynamic condition, which is present in the “everyday” and its permutations. The day-to-day condition is regarded as a highly dynamic flux of economic, social and political aspects and conceptually linked to sound and musical variation as guiding design principles, to actually retain and reflect the vitality of every day’s measure. We have traced precedents and cases in sound reproduction and its implications on the codification of architecture and have created a digital design tool in Max/MSP. The primary objective of the tool is to produce the corollary between sound reproduction and the conception and production of an architectonic codification, and ultimately to propose a strategy of architectural construct that has given way from the clarity of static geometry to the complexity in dynamic variability, that of dissonance. Virtual architecture and its techniques are considered to express and implement such permutations and induce a measure of change in every step and direction of the design process. The application of digital technology is regarded as the intervening of “apparatus” and to represent a different approach in relation to the prevailing regime.

title A fuzzy navigation system for mobile construction robots
source Automation in Construction 6 (2) (1997) pp. 97-107
summary Fuzzy navigation systems control a robot by implementing a fuzzy logic controller (FLC). Fuzzy navigation systems are simpler to implement than other navigation systems because they can handle infinite navigation situations with a finite set of rules. Existing fuzzy navigation systems for path finding in an unknown environment tend to find the shortest path in convex obstacle fields, but fail when obstacles are concave or placed continuously in certain configurations. This paper presents a fuzzy navigation system that can escape from concave and maze-like obstacle fields in an unknown environment. The system combines a tangent algorithm for path planning with sets of linguistic fuzzy control rules. In particular, we introduce the control rules for a Tracking mode of the FLC and improvements to the commonly used, intuitively reasonable tangent algorithm.

summary Wood is a hygroscopic material that experiences directional swelling when it undergoes changes in moisture content. This anisotropic property can induce bending in bilayer structures; a reaction that is usually undesired in building construction but is now being studied as a means of creating climate-responsive architectural systems. While there are extensive studies describing how to change the bending direction by altering wood grain orientation and composition during lamination or via 4D printing, there is no known method of modifying the curvature direction after the bilayer has been made. In this paper, laser cutting is presented as a novel post processing method that precisely and efficiently manipulates the directional swelling of commercially available bilayer wood composites. The documented tests in this paper utilize 1/4” thick C4 PureBond Maple Plywood, which is made of a thicker, primary (active) layer of wood that is laminated between two thinner, secondary (constraining) layers of wood. When a conventional laser cutter is used to cut and engrave patterns on this pre-laminated material, unique curling deformations, including bi-directional curling, can be achieved. The architectural potential of the resulting bilayer tailoring mechanisms was demonstrated through the development of a proof-of-concept climate-responsive architectural facade system. Further exploration and refinement of this new method could significantly impact the commercial development of responsive facades by facilitating the mass use and customization of multi-directional climate-responsive mechanisms. This process will ultimately reduce costs and carbon consumption by taking advantage of readily available wood products’ innate material properties.

summary This paper discusses by way of the authors' recent projects how improvised live dance performance, architectonic composition, and sensing technology converge and inform new opportunities in architectural experimentation. We first lay out the theoretical basis of technology in architectural experimentation in "new rationalities" of technologically augmented aesthetic work. We then briefly describe two projects, X-Change Room and RaumSubsTANZ and the motives behind them. X-Change Room deals with /non-verbal/ ambient display of information and interaction through envelope threshold. RaumSubsTANZ, a short interactive dance composition that highlights the ephemerality of architectural composition augmented by interaction devices. Through the two small projects we attempt to explore a specific technological milieu and reflect on the potentials and challenges of experimentation in architectural composition. The paper presents design methods and techniques that incorporate theories of perception and semiotics by way of an umbrella concept, "ambient displays" and interactive composition. Ultimately, we explore non-verbal communication and theatrical performance as architectural informant that augments semiosis and cognition that pertains to the role of technology at the intersection of primordial senses, cerebral technology, and place-making.

summary This paper focuses on the conception and design of architecture as the work of producing media about buildings and other environmental artifacts. I approach the questions regarding simplicity and complexity through "interdependence" and "intermodality." I believe the two concepts offer more precise frames of relations and contexts involving simplicity and complexity. I will first discuss the complexity as a condition of interdependences and how today's interdependences may provide a framework to understand complexity. I will then propose that intermodality adds to interdependence a notion that specifically pertains to today's media-driven culture and its complexity. I will next discuss how dependences and modalities are interconnected at various levels and eventually producing a new kind of semiosis that results from the disjunction between the medium and the content. I will in conclusion propose a new concept "apparatization" driven by interdependence and intermodality and how it changes shape and remain fluid, rather than scaling between simplicity and complexity, without a specific physical locus.

title Internet-based collaborative design evaluation : an architect's perspective
source Harvard University
summary This research aims at developing a design evaluation system that employs a Product Model as the logical basis for integrating building design and construction processes. The system is implemented with Java language, which allows the system to work over the Internet. Accordingly, the system helps architects to collaborate with remote participants. Thus, this design evaluation system is a building performance evaluator like DOE-2, RADIANCE, HVAC, and the Automated Building Code Checker. This research, however, is mainly concerned with an architect's view during the schematic design and design development stage, while the existing design evaluation systems cover other special consultants' views such as those of HVAC designers, structural engineers, and contractors. From an architect's view, this evaluation system checks the compliance of design objects represented by means of physical objects such as walls and windows and conceptual objects such as rooms as well, to the design criteria focused on accommodating human behavior, rather than other building performances such as sustaining building structures and maintaining indoor livability. As such, the system helps designers analyze and evaluate design solutions according to their original intent. The innovative points of this research lie in the following: (1) Unlike other inquiries, it addresses a systematic evaluation of building design from an architect's view focusing on the experiential quality of the built environment. This research demonstrates that such an evaluation becomes available by introducing human activity-based evaluation. (2) It can take a multi-agenda for several groups of different interests by providing an Aspect Model based on human activity-centered systematic translation of their design considerations and 3D model-based graphical representations into system readable ones. (3) As a result, it addresses the possibility of expanding the capability of the design evaluator from a mere code checker to a general design evaluator while simultaneously, enhancing the availability from stand alone to Internet based networking.

summary This research aim is to develop a design support system for interactive exploration of urban space variants. During the early design process for urban masterplan, the design support system can evaluate the state of the design stage quickly and suggest alternative design variants to the designers. Design variants obtained while developing the design concept can be managed to be re-used. Through the management of design information at each design step, a designer can be supported to explore the history of the design process and reuse it. Therefore, it is possible to support breadth-first and depth-first design modes in solution development in a highly structured manner. Therefore, a user can practi ce informed decision making while preserving ownership during the design process, which can assist designer-led creative design activities.
