summary This paper contains the results of some observations on how students use computers during their design work. The other reflections relate to problems with teaching how to use CAAD as not one and only right way of project presentations, but one of the available, freely connected with other, more traditional ones. Observations and conclusions drawn from conversations with students are extended and verified by a survey carried out at Bialystok University of Technology and Warsaw University of Technology. Generally, it turned out that students used computers more and more willingly in their design work and in the preparation of presentations, which was predictable. Moreover, it seems increasingly more difficult to encourage them to use traditional media during design process.

summary In this work we will show the results of the course Digital Morphology, at the Universidad de Chile and Universidad Nacional Andres Bello after three years of work. The focus of the course is on the design process. The students have two approaches to the design process, one from proposing diagrams from photograph, and another from the work whit motion capture files. Finally, the resulting morphologies are developed under an architectonic thematic.

summary This paper presents the results of a study seeking to understand users' attitudes regarding their consumption and use of the Internet, IoT devices, and related technologies. The framework of the study reviews the concept of Smart City, presents the position of Santiago (capital of Chile) within a world index of Smart Cities, and draft the status of three housing complexes located in highly vulnerable areas in Santiago in light of such an index. Further, we discuss what is missing to solve the gap between current trends and the image of Santiago as a real Smart City in Latin America.

summary This article presents a survey and analysis of the technopolitical devices created in projects of local initiatives carried out in Lisbon, within the scope of the Neighborhoods and Zones of Priority Intervention program, of the City Council. The methodology adopted is based on the reading of the projects, analysis of the technopolitics encountered and interviews with representatives of the entities that proposed them. In this way, it was possible to observe tendencies, potentialities and difficulties faced in the proposal and use of technopolitics in the scope of these projects, which allowed to conclude that the digital dimension has an important role in the reinforcement and expansion of an existing articulation in the territories, between partner entities and communities.

summary This paper describes the challenges and approaches to introduce computational thinking to a large and diverse group of architecture students during an international workshop with 300 students from different cultural backgrounds and educational levels, also integrating a diverse group of tutors whose computational expertise varied extremely. The approach suggested articulating a design task which enforced computational thinking but enabled different levels of engagement with the computer as a tool. Hypothetically this would allow all participants to engage with the computational thinking agenda regardless their computational affinity even whilst applying analogue methods. Besides the intercultural experience the workshop was successful in exposing a large group of students and tutors to the concepts of computational design whilst accommodating different learning preferences and engagement with the computer as a device.

summary Performance based design systems are characterised through the use of performance related evaluation methods or by providing design environments which are restricting the design space according to performance criteria. The performance of a design can be evaluated by numerical simulations. With the use of numerical simulations a fundamental dilemma appears: the precision implied in numerical simulations and the imprecision of the design process itself are systematic contradictions. User control or user interaction in open systems places the user into charge of the imprecision required by the design process. In closed systems, as the below described evolutionary system, methods of imprecision have to be integrated i.e. into the precise simulation based evaluation procedure. Through tolerant selection methods and the gradual evaluation of individuals the rigid and precise system can be guided towards a design system rather than an optimisation system. Due to technical requirements which are related both to the fact of using computer systems but also to the systematic conditions implied to simulations the use of the tolerant selection methods is limited.

summary Current dominance of functionalist and performance related approaches to computational design and methods in architecture are investigated under the precondition of Max Bense's theory of aesthetic potential. Establishing Bense's taxonomy of aesthetic potential and applying it to selected computational methods the level of aesthetic potential within the different computational approaches is investigated. Frei Otto's soap bubble experiments serve as a reference to illustrate different levels of aesthetic potential. Bense's aesthetic potential, which lies not in the eye of the beholder but is immanent to the object itself as a property of the object, suggests that computational design systems synthesising objects based on rules or embedded constraints appear to either have little aesthetic potential or receive their aesthetic potential form the outside of the computational system, namely the interaction with the user. Evolutionary design systems appear to create objects or processes with a certain aesthetic potential within Bense's theoretical framework.

It intends to go through two complementary ways of translation between object shape and topology: the making of architectonical objects in topological surfaces and, on the other way, the exploration of topological surfaces as architectonical objects.

This threefold concept (topology, process, diagram) is investigated in different areas such Cognitive Science, Logic (Mathematics and Semiotics) and Philosophy, in order to enrich the analyse of its actuation in the field of Topology. In this analysis, the topologic processual diagram is described as an operative-representational medium of spatial structural relations (the object's topology), with three variables: thought, space and time. Finally, this concept is investigated within the realm of the project and representation in Architecture, building up a critical dialogue with diagrams, its use and reference, as performed by paradigmatic contemporary architects.

summary The present paper is a mapping study of digital fabrication laboratories in Latin America. It presents and discusses results from a survey with 31 universities’ fab labs, studios and independent initiatives in Latin America. The objective of this study is fourfold: firstly, to draw the cultural, social and economic context of implementation of digital fabrication laboratories in the region; secondly, to synthesize relevant data from correlations between organizational structures, facilities and technologies, activities, types of prototypes, uses and areas of application; thirdly, to draw a network of people and institutions, recovering connections and the genealogy of these fab labs; and fourthly, to present some fab labs that are intertwined with local questions. The results obtained indicate a complex “homo faber” network of initiatives that embraces academic investigations, architectural developments, industry applications, artistic propositions and actions in social processes.

summary The article presents the pedagogical experience of the elective course “Feel the space: design with tactile models” held at the Institute of Architecture and Urbanism of USP / S?o Carlos in 2014. From the critique of the primacy of seeing, the experimental activity proposed a housing design process with a visually impaired person, using models, plants and tactile maps. Were investigated and compared the free use of materials and processes with the use of digital fabrication - MDF plates manufactured with a laser cutting machine. As a result, it is presented the tactile representation system developed in the activity.

summary The article presents and discusses the experience of a workshop held online in 2020 as part of the DigitalFUTURES event. The proposal found its starting point in the register of a world in the midst of a pandemic crisis. The general objective of the workshop was the construction of a design thinking capable of acting on the domestic by means of a disobedience projected towards a possible future. In this framework, digital disobedience became an exercise in critically questioning certain ambiguities of digital interfaces in their everyday omnipresence. By adopting a decolonial sight on design through an epistemology from the South, it was possible to achieve at alternative figurations of futures. These figurations led to the design of a series of futuristic domestic devices capable of exploring disobedient scenarios of domestic dwelling.

summary In the present study were evaluated land parceling problems under aspects of spatial configuration related to land value (lv). Paradoxical cases occur in urban spaces, such as low spatial differentiation and high lv, or vice-versa. Determined urban areas are identified as having high centrality, with intense land use and occupation, and, therefore, high market value. Conversely, other urban areas are identified as having low centrality value, certain degradation, or lack of infrastructure and urban equipment, and, consequently, low lv. Empirical studies have proved satisfactory results interms of the correlation between measures of configuration and lv. These studies verify the convenience of the models used to describe significant aspects of spatial differentiation. The complementation of the methodological proposal is identified, and other components of urban space are calculated (plot dimension, infrastructure, normative aspects, etc.). These are determinant measures that characterize the local factor associated with measures that determine the morphological differentiation.This differentiation demonstrated that land value distribution, besides following centrality, depends, in greater or lesser extent, on the local factor. The results obtained, through a model that combines measures of centrality with local characteristics, approached reality because the model incorporated a greater number of variables which allowed the verification of correlated socioeconomic and spatial matters related to parceling, value, and configuration.

summary This paper intends to present the educational aims, objectives and results of our pedagogic methods to teach design with the aid of technology. The vehicle to fulfil this intention ran in a module form in the Schools of Architecture of Thessaloniki, Greece and of Plymouth, UK. The primary aim of the module introduced by the experiment was to generate the grounds and to give rise to opportunities so that the students could have the possibility to study through well-known contemporary architectural examples the relationship between thinking of and about architecture and doing architecture. The principal means to present this study was the computer. Some of the emerging questions from this experiment were what educational practices should we develop in order to support such an approach in the studio? What role should new technologies play in such an attempt? The experiment attempted to respond to these questions. In the module we attempted to implement our methodological viewpoint on the teaching of design based on the pedagogic starting point of the method of critical commentary. A brief review on the history of design teaching is described in order that our argument and chosen teaching methods to become clear. The theoretical and ideological content of our design teaching methods is described in relation to the module and in relation to the outcome.

summary This work discusses the expanding use of the Internet in developing countries - a phenomenon that has gone hand-in-hand with rising rates of poverty, illiteracy and violence in these countries - and presents the project “Netizens, net-fringers and outsiders”, created by the author with the help of the Laboratório/Núcleo de Arte Eletrônica / PUC-Rio. We interviewed 120 people living in Rio de Janeiro regarding the use, applications and future of the Internet, and began to weave a network of identities, and a database of text, images and sounds, which originated an artistic and interactive work. In this article we discuss its aims, development and results.

summary With the advent of information theories, contemporary architecture is approached in terms of the energetic formations of memorization, association and connection. The former architectural diagram becomes a concretization, an instance, one possibility, of an operational code. Memorization refers to the ability of architecture to embed information within the deepest composition of matter. Architectural performance has always been revealed by the integration, or association, of multiple parameters. Connections are vectors which fuse the knowledge of heterogeneous symbiotic human environments. In the “C-chair”, a project by our laboratory Open Source Architecture, abstract objects such as points, lines, and surfaces act as memorizers of information. As the codified system reacts to external forces, an association of two distinct graph structures is developed and connections are formed as the architectural object emerges.

summary There are some fundamental issues in todays architectural education which seem important yet very hard to achieve. One of this issues is the interdependence between design and technology. There is one group in architectural education which beliefs that the question of how to conceive (arch.) and how to construct (arch.) are interdependent. Consequently in this line of thinking the design concept requires verification on a technological level. The second issue which has often been debated is performance. Related to it is a line of thinking which is not satisfied with the formal issues of design - and how it looks, but wants to carry design to point where you also know - what it does and with it how much it costs. Cost-consciousness is the final issue addressed. We all know that there are limits to what a school can do or what a school can be. And, there is an essential difference between practise and education. Yet at the same time the argument is that only consciousness is required thus leading to the basic understanding that form performance and costs are interrelated and interdependent issues in architectural design.

summary Included in this article are two second year architecture graduate student precedent studies to understand the complexity of a built project and its functional, structural and spatial design concept. Students were instructed to ‘disassemble’ the building according to Form & Function, Structure & Construction, Materials, and Display Methods. Through the use of computer-generated models the students were able to understand the relationship between space and structure without having to physically travel to the pavilion sites. The computer offered the unique ability to explore a spatial study of buildings and places that no longer exist (such as the IBM Pavilion by Renzo Piano), as well as to anticipate the spatial qualities of spaces that are not yet built (similar to the Swiss Pavilion by Peter Zumthor). Final analysis drawings were created through manipulating the computer models to explain the Space & Form (spatial hierarchies), Spatial Sequence (circulation, path & place, and exhibition sequencing), and Space & Order (structure, proportion, and systems).
