summary The proliferation of digital technology has swelled the amount of time people spent in cyberspace and weakened our sensibility of the physical world. Human beings in this digital era are already cyborgs as the smart devices have become an integral part of our life. Imagining a future where human totally give up mobile phones and embrace nature is neither realistic nor reasonable. What we should aim to explore is the opportunities and capabilities of digital technology in terms of fighting against its own negative effect - cyber addiction, and working as a catalyst that re-embeds human into outdoor world. Cyborgian systems behave through embedded intelligence in the environment and discrete wearable devices for human. In this way, cyborgian approach enables designers to take advantages of digital technologies to achieve two objectives: one is to improve the quality of environment by enhancing our understanding of nonhuman creatures; the other is to encourage a proper level of human participation without disturbing eco-balance. Finally, this paper proposed a cyborgian eco-interaction design model which combines top-down and bottom-up logics and is organized by the Internet of Things, so as to provide a possible solution to the concern that technologies are isolating human and nature.

summary Considering the use of a particular digital fabrication method, this research intends to look into the design-production relation and attempts to answer the question of how the manufacturing parameters can be integrated into the design process to facilitate the design-to-production communication. It is argued that the above is achievable through the application of a simulationbased algorithmic procedures derived from the inherent logic of a fabrication machine’s functionality. It has been studied through creation of two custom tools facilitating the design process – a library for the Processing programming language and a bespoke design procedure - both based on a functionality of the CNC milling machine. Finally, the conclusion is made that broader implementation of custom design procedures with underlying digital fabrication logic has a potential of altering the design process and facilitate the design-tofactory communication.

summary This paper describes two design studio projects with first year architecture students at the University of Nottingham. Originally, this exercise was aimed to introduce them to CAD drawing tools, but due to some particular characteristics of the brief, some unexpected results came to add an interesting value to their design learning process. From the exploration of a functional building typology through the digital construction of an iconic case study, it was developed a creative fabrication of absent architecture based on research, analysis and imagination. Then there was identified the most appropriate medium for communication of these defining characteristics. Unexpected focus on material considerations over spatial analysis, motivated a second exercise which used image manipulation, based on graphic source material and digital imaging of physical models.

title Computer recognition of three-dimensional objects in a visual scene

summary Methods are presented (1) to partition or decompose a visual scene into the bodies forming it; (2) to position these bodies in three-dimensional space, by combining two scenes that make a stereoscopic pair; (3) to find the regions or zones of a visual scene that belong to its background; (4) to carry out the isolation of objects in (1) when the input has inaccuracies. Running computer programs implement the methods, and many examples illustrate their behavior. The input is a two-dimensional line-drawing of the scene, assumed to contain three-dimensional bodies possessing flat faces (polyhedra); some of them may be partially occluded. Suggestions are made for extending the work to curved objects. Some comparisons are made with human visual perception. The main conclusion is that it is possible to separate a picture or scene into the constituent objects exclusively on the basis of monocular geometric properties (on the basis of pure form); in fact, successful methods are shown.

summary This paper presents a tool for assisting 3D modeling from perspective projections. The proposed system uses a projective geometry engine capable of rebuilding a 3D model from a set of lines and geometric constraints. A dialogue interface assists the user in expressing geometric constraints. The system finds out the relevant geometrical components in the sketch and automatically posts the constraints. The system is limited to rebuilding polyhedrons. If we can deduce, from a perspective sketch of a polyhedron, the planar constraints of the faces and the parallelism constraints of the edges that meet in the same vanishing points, the geometric engine will be able to build a 3D model of the polyhedron.

summary This paper presents the development of a tool which is capable of compute several projections of a polyhedral scene from a single axonometric or perspective projection. This projection is hand-drawn and may be incomplete. This sketch can be rotated with a kind of trackball and the tool computes in real-time new projections. In that way the designer can choose another view from which he is able to control and complete the sketch and carry on designing. So this tool can be useful for exploring architectural forms in the early phases of the design process. Unlike others freehand sketching interfaces, the system does not operate any reconstruction in 3D. Everything is computed in a 2D world.

summary In the planning process, Yamato city set up four citizens' participatory channels; two in the real space and the other two in the cyber space. The channels in each space are divided into two types; one restricts membership and the other does not. This paper aims to clarify the functions of these four channels through protocol analysis and draws the following two findings. (1) In the channels with the restricted membership, the theme of the discussion continues between the real space and the cyber space mutually. Consequently, close communication became possible. (2) The other finding is that the continuity of discussions exists almost one-way from the restricted channels to the unrestricted, so the unrestricted channels are regarded as functioning to enhance the validity of the citizen discussions in the member-restricted channels. For closer communication, however, the continuity from the unrestricted to the restricted channels should be ensured, hence it is necessary to establish some systems for the continual communication.

title Parametric point-cloud slicing for facade retrofitting

summary This work presents a method for retrieving 3D building contours usable in facade retrofitting projects, which uses a parametric modeling workflow that utilizes a point-cloud slicing method to retrieve such 3D contours. Since current commitments by European governments seek to reduce energy consumption as a means to reduce carbon emissions from building stock by 2050, facade retrofitting appears as an alternative for addressing operational and embedded building emissions. Within such a context, the main contribution of this work consists of a workflow and a 3D reconstruction solution that uses a parametric environment for capturing building topology and bypassing ground-level occlusions. A real case study and a strategy for converting 3D building contours into Industry Foundation Classes entities, directly from the parametric modeling environment, served as a scenario for testing the capabilities of a Grasshopper solution and open new perspectives for this approach.

summary The non-standard approach, widely discussed in the past years as Architecture progressively uses alternative design methods different from the Euclidean paradigm, has allowed architects to transform the way architecture is conceived and materialized. Such evolution uses computer-aided design along with automation in production to originate the environment for the aided architectural conception field in which we present a method, in its early development stage, intended to create non-standard walls and envelopes based on cellular patterns using wood as base material. We present the results obtained from modeling and building two full-scale prototypes of non-standard wooden walls.

summary A Program of Graphic Computing, developed in the Language of Programming AUTOLISP and run in AUTOCAD 2000, which is guided toward the Investigation in Bioclimatic Architecture, is presented. Before a model of solar protection in 3D, and loading the input data of the geographical localization and orientation, time and evaluation date (chosen by the user), the program calculates and projects the simulation of the corresponding shade contours on every plane that constitutes the 3D pattern (openings, walls, protections, floor...). In this research different areas of knowledge concur: Plane and spherical trigonometry applied to the solar ray and to the Bioclimatic Architecture, space geometry, plane graphical representation of three-dimensional objects, a concept of the transformation of vision for the three-dimensional representation of the objects in computers, and modern programming techniques.

title Campus Information-and-knowledge Modeling: Embedding Multidisciplinary Knowledge into a Design Environment for University Campus Planning

summary This article gives an overview of our research approach in collecting specific information and multidisciplinary knowledge with the aim of integrating them into a model for the planning of a university, supported by a design environment. Our goal is to develop a strategy for modeling raw information and expert knowledge for the Georgia Tech Campus. This research was divided into three stages: First, we identified a variety of written sources of information for campus planning, extracting and distinguishing raw information from disciplinary knowledge. Second, we selected the elicitation methods to gather knowledge directly from experts, with the objective of performing qualitative assessments –effectiveness,efficiency,andsatisfaction–ofcertainfeaturesof the Georgia Tech Campus. Third, we interpreted the information and knowledge obtained and structured them into Bloom’s taxonomy of factual, conceptual, procedural and meta-cognitive, to define the specific modeling implementation strategies. Currently, we are implementing a Campus Landscape Information Modeling Tabletop in two phases. First, constructing an information-model based on raster and vector models that represent land types and landscape elements respectively, to perform quantitative assessments of campus possible scenarios. Second, embedding knowledge and qualitative aspects into a knowledge-model. The long-term goal is to include quantitative as well as qualitative aspects into a computational model, to support informed and balanced design decisions for university campus planning.This paper specifically focuses on the construction of the knowledge-model for Georgia Tech Landscape planning, its structure, its content, as well as the elicitation methods used to collect it.

summary This paper presents our Campus Information Model from a participatory perspective. The primary goal of our Campus Information Model (CIM) is to gather several disciplinary goals into a single model as the platform for collaboration. This intermediate-scale model integrates information and expert knowledge about a university campus design, including landscape planning and building design, allowing users to obtain quantitative feedback in real time to support design facilitating their specific goals. This paper describes first, the concept of collaboration; second, the collaborative system CIM; and third, the strategies to bring quantitative and qualitative goals to the same design environment.

summary With the rapid increase in the accessible data, available information surpasses one's ability to extract knowledge from, which puts a great emphasis on the skills of the individual to reach and use relevant information, adapt to changing conditions and sustain respective skills. ICT skills, critical thinking skills, and communication/collaboration skills emerge as the survival skills and key factors for individuals to cope with the demands of the 21st-century. It is known that educational institutions have struggles in changing the curricula/teaching system in coping with the requirements of the rapidly evolving industry. Thus, workshops gained more importance in different levels which are a part of curricular or extracurricular activities to re-furnish existing skills or gain new skills. In the scope of this study, the learning and teaching approaches based on STEAM approach are assessed through a three-day workshop aiming to illustrate how these survival skills can be conveyed and embedded into the architecture education. The workshop is designed to be inclusive for all architecture students regardless of their level of education or background knowledge/skills. Within the scope of this paper, the conduction strategies of the workshop are covered in detail to highlight the importance of these survival skills along with the modes of teaching and share the best practices and gained knowledge for future works.

summary Starting with the first founded university, higher education has been evolving continuously, yet the pace of this evolution is not as fast as the changes that we observe in practice. Today, this discrepancy is not only limited to the content of the curricula but also the expected skills and competencies. It is evident that 21st-century skills and competencies should be much different than the ones delivered in the 20th-century due to rapidly developing and spreading new design and information technologies. Each and every discipline has been in continuous search of the "right" way of formalization of education both content and skill wise. This paper focuses on architectural design education incorporating discussions on the role of STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). The study presents the outcomes of the ArchiSTEAM project, which is funded by EU Erasmus+ Programme, with the aim of re-positioning STEAM in architectural design education by contemplating 21st-century skills (a.k.a. survival skills) of architects. Three educational modules together with the andragogic approaches, learning objectives, contents, learning/teaching activities and assessment methods determined with respect to the skill sets defined for 21st-century architects.

summary This paper discusses an educational approach emphasizing the changing role of mathematics and potentials of mathematical thinking in architectural education on the course of changing design paradigm: from designing the product to designing the process. In this context, randomly selected samples of student works, realized within the context of an elective undergraduate course, Arch 333 “Mathematics in Architecture” at Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkiye are presented. It is shown that mathematical thinking provide not only to science people a solid ground for further explorations, but also new inspirations to people involving art and design and help them to overcome prejudices and fears related with mathematics in their minds. It is believed that this approach encourages them to discuss complex problems with meta language of mathematics and develop ability to consider the design process as a whole.
