summary City environment is very much determined by the design of its streets and in particular by the design of its cross section. This paper shows a street cross section design interface where designs are controlled by an ontology and a parametric design system. The system keeps its semantic structure through the ontology and provides a design interface that understands the computer interaction needed by the urban designer. Real time visual analytics are used to support the design decision process, allowing designers to objectively compare designs and measure the differences between them, in order to make informed decisions.

summary The purpose of the present experiment consists in optimizing a building modifying its apertures (windows) and its geometry to reduce heating and air conditioning consumption. The optimization is performed using a Micro-Genetic Algorithm (Micro-GAs) programmed in C# embedded like a series of functions into GenerativeComponents (GC). EnergyPlus (E+) software is used to evaluate the HVAC consumption levels of the building. The aim of the optimization is to keep the temperature at 20ºC on the hottest and coldest day using the least possible energy (Jules). In conclusion, this article proposes a new technique based on parametric modelling, evaluation and evolutionary optimization to generate efficient buildings with HVAC consumptions.

summary In design studio courses, assessment helps to improve teaching practice and student learning. Output-Mapping model considers a practical working method, applicable to teaching, based on records of students' outcomes. Visualization is a key component; iconographic resources aid understanding and observation of the territory conquered by each participant throughout the course. The next phase of the project addresses the need to manage large amounts of information generated by a statistical model for assessment. Visualization media used so far have proven limited. A new web system may dynamically visualize relationships between students' records more immediately, precisely and in a network.

And soon after, there was the application of this methodology in project development of the portal of university of Brazil.

summary Daylight standards contribute significantly to the form of buildings and the urban environment. Direct solar access of existing and new buildings can be considered through the use of solar envelope and solar collection isosurface methods. The first determines the maximum volume and shape that new buildings cannot exceed to guarantee the required solar rights on existing surrounding facades. The latter predicts the portion of facades of new buildings that will receive the required direct sunlight hours in urban environments. Nowadays, environmental design software based on the existing methods permits the generation of solar envelopes and solar collection isosurfaces to use in the schematic design phase. Nevertheless, the existing methods and software present significant limitations when used to design buildings that must fulfil the Estonian daylight standard. Recent research has successfully developed computational workflows based on the existing methods and available tools to tackle such shortcomings. The present work uses the findings to propose a novel computational method to generate solar envelopes and integrate solar collection analysis. It is a subtractive form-finding method that is more efficient than the existing additive methods and other recent workflows when it is applied to high-rise buildings in fragmented urban environments. The tests performed show that the new method permits the realisation of compliant and larger solar envelopes, which furthermore embed formal properties. The objective of the research is to contribute to the development of computational methods and tools to integrate direct solar access performance efficiently into the design process.

summary Shape of built environment and image of cities are significantly influenced by environmental factors such as access to natural light, air temperature and wind. Adequate quantity of daylight in building interiors is important for occupant wellbeing and energy saving. In Estonia minimum quantity of daylight is required by building standards. Wind speed increased by urban environment at northern latitudes can significantly reduce pedestrian perceived temperature during winter inducing strong cold stress. This paper presents a method for the integration of parametric modeling and environmental simulations to analyze interiors and exteriors comfort of tower building cluster variations in different urban areas in Tallinn. Optimal pattern characteristics such as buildings distance and alignment favoring improvement of interiors daylight and decrease of pedestrian cold stress are presented and discussed.

summary Nowadays, sustainability is in the agenda of most of the countries and international organizations. Among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, Goal 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities sets specific targets for cities to adopt solutions for inclusion, safety, resource efficiency, resilience, mitigation and adaptation to climate change. Furthermore, it is increasingly evident among designers and researchers that design methods and solutions doing less harm or with a neutral effect on the environment are not sufficient anymore. A holistic approach is necessary in designing for a positive effect on climate change, resource depletion, human health and natural systems as a whole to develop sustainable architecture design solutions as well as regenerative and resilient cities. Computational design allows us to develop workflows considering the built environment, humans and natural systems as a whole, by integrating simulations such as climatic, environmental, materiality, energy, behavior and use, and performances such as energy balance, usability, structural, fabrication, comfort, health, and costs, at multiple scales. The symposium and workshops reflected and experimented new concepts, methods, and solutions to create a positive impact on the urban environment and the city, but also on humans and the natural environment, taking advantage of the potential of computational design to integrate performance-driven and simulation-based workflows. Furthermore, the objective of the symposium was to explore the potential of computational design in proposing a new architectural paradigm through performance and simulation. Particular emphasis has been given to research showing innovative holistic, multi-disciplinary, multi-domain, multi-scale, and multi- objective approaches to guide and support the scientific and design community at large to design sustainable cities and communities.

summary Daylight and solar access influence positively building occupants' wellbeing and students' learning performance. However, an excess of sunlight can harm the visual comfort of occupants through disturbing glare effects. This study investigated, through multi-objective optimization, the potential of static shading devices to reduce glare and to guarantee daylight provision in a university building. The results showed that the reduction of disturbing glare was up to more than twice the reduced daylight, which nevertheless, was provided in adequate levels. View out and energy performance were also analyzed. Detailed results of optimal shading types and classrooms layout indications are presented.

summary The evolutionary algorithm contributes significantly to the search for solutions to difficult problems of understanding and problems that have more than one solution, and all of which are satisfactory. This method is used by some architects as an optimization technique for design process; furthermore it is a possibility to obtain solutions which may not have been imagined by the designer. The aim of this article is to introduce the main concepts of evolutionary algorithm and to explain its structure. The article ends with example of the application of evolutionary algorithms in solving design problems.

summary The questions on this article point to a different understanding of the image with its different medias, more specifically where the digitalization and manipulation of the image unfocussed the once sharp and clear frontiers between photography and painting. The contemporary visual artists share a desire for the impurity and contagion in the relations between the photographic and the pictorial. The works alternate themselves between these bases besides exploring new relationships between them. It is not important anymore how an image derives into another, and today the term image manipulation can be applied for both photography and painting.

After this, it discusses the potential of this technique for teaching construction of a more comprehensive way and presents a multimedia material for developing this task.

summary This article presents inclusive didactic material for deaf architecture students, using digital technology. The objective is to contribute to the teaching and learning of basic content. The methodology involved interviews with deaf students, LIBRAS teachers and professionals from the Accessibility and Inclusion Centers, seeking elements to be used in inclusive didactic material. Visual language was used, including videos, texts, LIBRAS, drawings and animated images. The product is a website entitled “MIRA: Inclusive Material for Architectural Representation”, which hosts the produced inclusive didactic material. The site is in the evaluation phase, seeking to identify adjustments before its use in teaching practice. For this, a questionnaire was developed to evaluate Navigation and Content. Navigation is about ease of use and Content is about imparting knowledge. It is hoped that the result can contribute to the teaching of architecture in a more inclusive way, with greater adaptation to the needs of deaf students.

summary The paper describes in detail a process of work consisting of merging a virtual model into a real image. This process implies three different kinds of operations: geometric restoration of the real scene, in 3D, from a photograph, rendering a virtual model under similar conditions as the photograph, and merging of the rendered image with the original image. The paper empasises quality and visual precision of results together with a semiautomatization of the entire process. It also refers critically these three different groups of operations to their theoretical background. It concludes with an evaluation of the work from the point of view of architectural visual analysis and from the point of view of architectural visual analysis and from the point of view of a general design methodology.

summary Linking solar positions with architecture is a traditional idea, but the use of graphical tools to control sunlight in urban surroundings or buildings is relatively recent. A three-dimensional working environment like the computer offers a new dimension to verify the relationships between the sun and the architecture. This paper shows a new way to calculate the incidence of solar energy in architectural environments using computer 3D modelling. The addition of virtual space visualisation to the analytic computation brings a new tool that simplifies the technical study of sunlight. We have developed several programs based upon the three-dimensional construction of the solar vault and the obstructing objects for a defined position. The first one draws the solar vault for a defined range of dates according to latitude, that is the basis of the energetic calculation. The second program computes the obstruction, i.e. the solar regions that are obstructed by any object. Finally, the third one, allow us to define an orientation to compute the energy that arrives to the analysed positioning. The last program returns the result of calculation in several ways: it shows the amount of energy through colours and makes a list of solar hours according to its energy.

summary The present graphic computer system allows defining high-level shape problems with great freedom. In free-form surface modeling it comes to be a good reason to develop an example that shows, which is the best way to create, modify and control complex free-form shapes in three-dimensional architectonic virtual modeling. The parameters of Bezier curves are not simple. But the use of Splines curves let us a friendly free form curves management with a great designer performance level. Unfortunately, the standard computer graphic tools to control these entities have a lot of variations, and normally create an unclear and confuse interface for generic users without several knowledge of mathematics and geometry. With the help of an example, this paper expose the use of computer graphics to make models of architectonic buildings with complex shapes that contains free-form surfaces. At the same time, it is an evaluation of how the standard CAD software processes this problem.

summary In this paper, we are aiming to present a methodology for generation, manipulation and form finding of structural typologies using variational autoencoders, a machine learning model based on neural networks. We are giving a detailed description of the neural network architecture used as well as the data representation based on the concept of a 3D-canvas with voxelized wireframes. In this 3D-canvas, the input geometry of the building typologies is represented through their connectivity map and subsequently augmented to increase the size of the training set. Our variational autoencoder model then learns a continuous latent distribution of the input data from which we can sample to generate new geometry instances, essentially hybrids of the initial input geometries. Finally, we present the results of these computational experiments and lay out the conclusions as well as outlook for future research in this field.

summary The digitization of culture imposes new logic to the design disciplines in professional and academic areas. New roles, competencies and requirements emerge in front of an architecture that today is essentially material and also informational. The overabundance of information confuses and forced to develop strategies and skills that go beyond the traditional system of reading and observation to achieve its analysis and understanding. In this sense, the work investigates and cartography variables of information visualization related to semantic attributes, aimed to recognize their potential for instrumental experimentation in design processes within learning environments.
