summary The analogue definition of studies on urban planning can be very time consuming in the top-down process of designing. Keeping in mind the rapid urbanization we had in Brazil, and the continuous migration to the capital of the country located in Federal District, our aim is to use digital aid models that could be flexible and make quicker responses to urban issues. Algorithms as finite sequences of instructions have broad application. Designing cities demands the interpretation of variables linked to the territory and takes into account the current legislation in order to develop urban plans. This research creates an algorithmic basis using Grasshopper® to propose a mathematical solution for interpreting the existing space, and from it, to model urban scenes. The territorial analysis uses the user's perspective, with the interpretation of pre-existing characteristics, such as main roads, function and equipment distributions that make up the basic services. It is based on parameters extracted from theoretical repertoire and community facilities optimization through Galapagos evolutionary solver to deliver different proposed scenarios.

summary From the analysis of the project of preservation and rehabilitation of the “groupe scolaire” Karl Marx (1932) in Villejuif designed by André Lurçat, it was possible to bring into light the existence of a corpus of homogenous constructions, which unfortunately did not receive a fair recognition until today. It consists in a group of elementary schools – nursery and primary – designed and built during the 1929 -1939 decade, located in close Paris’ suburb, and among which most of them keep their original purpose today. Regrettably, their vicissitudes altered their image and actual perception, and consequently their meaning escapes us, their importance, what they can communicate to us as testimonies of a period of strong ideological conflicts, where the claimed modernity of these buildings seemed to announce the freeing of the man from class struggle. The aims of this study are to question about the value of this heritage, to try to bring out its meaning and to envision which would be the mechanisms that should allow modifying its actual blurred and wrong perception.

summary This paper proposes an on site construction support system using digital techniques to solve the issue of logistical inconvenience on remote islands, where industrialized construction methods are absent. Transporting heavy machinery is costly and difficult in isolated rural areas. In addition, introducing materials from outside creates a heavy ecological footprint when building. Locally produced construction materials resolve many of these issues. To test the potential of building within these constraints a case study site on an isolated island of Japan, named Kuchinoerabu, was chosen. A concrete shell structure was created using locally sourced bamboo as reinforcement. Through the study, several technical issues are revealed. Significantly, there is broad variation in the material properties of bamboo, and reducing errors when using unskilled labor is difficult. The system nominally manages the following functions: 1) Synchronizing data between CAD and the materialized form; 2) Checking errors between the target form and the one that was actually produced; 3) Inputting material characteristics on site. 4) Making a structural analysis, and reflecting its execution during construction. These functions minimize the margin of error, and aid an unskilled labor force to work more accurately.

summary In the 70s-80s Kenneth Frampton, defined the phenomenon of "critical regionalism" in contemporary architecture. He pointed out that the most interesting objects arise at the threshold between local and global architecture. These are objects that are open to modern technology in various fields of science, and at the same time remain rooted in the local tradition of building , thus to create a space that is approved and understood locally. The article presents two examples of buildings (the Ma³opolska Garden of Arts in Krakow and the Polish Pavilion EXPO 2005 Aichi in Japan, Europe - Far East Gallery in Krakow) that look for their individual contextual sources, turn to experiments with traditional materials, try to find lost threads of handicraft tradition, and at the same time reach for modern technologies with respect for the natural and cultural environment.

title A city revised: representing or recreating the urban space as a polygon experience – a discussion of the case of virtual Turku

summary The Internet has provided a new means to represent urban space. The development of modelling languages,like VRML, has given us the tools to recreate urban locations on the net. In this paper, the virtual image ofTurku, a city located in Southwest Finland is discussed. My approach is twofold. Firstly, I focus on the‘official’ city web-page and its two dimensional textual appearance. This constitutes the essence of virtualcity as ‘public’ project. Secondly, there is a challenging new field that combines aspects from computersciences, urban studies and Internet research. This refers to three-dimensional city models that are used torepresent an exact copy of the material space of cities. The analysis is based on interpretation of interviewsand contents of the two site structures. The following conclusions are proposed. The mission of a virtualpublic city is twofold: it is a local project, purposed to build a new and efficient medium to connect theadministration and citizens; and it is also a global/national project, a medium of advertising and givingknowledge of the tourist possibilities and attractions. On the other hand, the private virtual city project isbased on potential future incomes. It is a means of gaining profit via expanding possibilities provided by ecommerce.

title A Spatial Information System for the Archaeological Site of Mycenae

summary Digital and automated photogrammetric procedures, developed for the collection and management of spatial data, and terrestrial laser scanning systems provide new capabilities for documentation of archaeological monuments and sites. Also, special tools in Spatial Information Systems and production of virtual models have been developed. Their combination provides relevant scientists (architects, archaeologists, etc) and users with a variety of options for the creation of integrated systems capable for documentation, restoration and cultural development of archaeological sites. Detailed 2D and 3D representation of the current condition of the site, development of a multi-purpose SIS, and introduction of modern digital products at a local museum, such as 3D models, creation of virtual environment and Web applications are some of them. Application of such techniques and systems was made to the archaeological site of the Mycenae in Greece, one of the most important sites worldwide.

summary A procedure for generating 3-dimensional spatial configurations for optimization applications, termed Dimension Constrained Rectangular Voronoi Diagram (DC-RVD), is presented in this paper. The procedure is able to generate a non-overlapping configuration of spatial units in 3-dimensional space, given a string of real values. It constitutes an extension and adaptation of the Rectangular Voronoi Diagram generating procedure, found in the work of Choi and Young (1991). An extensive description of the procedure, with the relevant pseudocode is included in the paper. The procedure is tested in a stochastic optimisation-based decision support environment. Testing is done using a case study of a medium-sized family house. The result indicate promising performance.

summary This model uses agents, which lay and respond to alternative pheromone trails to define circulation routes between specific locations. There is no a priori knowledge embedded in the model. The communication network generated between the colonies represents a routing structure, which is emergent and dynamic. The intended application is for building types that are specifically defined by complex circulation parameters, such as airports, hospitals and schools. Proposed here, is a generative process in which the circulation patterns between specific destinations and the spatial arrangement emerges in a process of mutual compatibility.

summary Decomposing typical hierarchies of architectural space we look to the use of agents to generate architectonic form in a process of distributed representation. This paper forms a part of this on going research; a component focusing on the problem of circulation. The work presented looks to swarm intelligence and the well-trodden field of computational way finding techniques based on the route finding means of social insects. Ant foraging algorithms are used generally towards optimization and tend to rely on a priori knowledge of the environment. Outlined here is an investigation of emergent route formation and spatial connectivity based on simple agent and pheromone interaction. Optimization is not the key, but emergent connectivity through blind local communication.

title Computerized Performance Monitoring Systems : Use and Abuse

summary An exploratory study of computerized performance monitoring and control systems reveals both positive and negative effects. Responses of 50 clerical workers from 2 organizations with computerized monitoring were compared to 94 individuals from 3 organizations in similar jobs without computerized monitoring. The results indicate that computerized monitoring is associated with perceived increases in office productivity, more accurate and complete assessment of workers' performance, and higher levels of organizational control. Respondents indicate that managers overemphasize the importance of quantity and underemphasize the importance of quality in evaluating employee performance. Workers perceive increased stress, lower levels of satisfaction, and a decrease in the quality of their relationships with peers and management as a consequence of computerized monitoring. The relevance of existing models of performance monitoring is examined in light of these findings

summary Architecture, like other practice-oriented schools, aims to teach skills and knowledge required in professional practice. The aspired architecture profession increasingly requires practitioners who are able to work in collaborative BIM environments. This creates a task for education to develop new ways of teaching BIM concepts and tools to prepare the next generations of students who will enter the work force. To address this need, this study developed a methodology for learning BIM in architecture education by establishing relationship between practice and education. As substantial part of methodology development process, this paper will present the ongoing research that focuses on collaborative teaching process between AE practitioners and teachers. The benefits and challenges of this process will be presented and discussed.

summary Japanese building and construction industry expect BIM for the rescue of forecasted workforce shortage due to the population aging. Although the use of BIM has been spreading over past years, the progress of BIM implementation in Japan is slow. This paper aims to identify the obstructive factor for industry's smooth transformation. First, the authors analyze Japenese BIM protocols, which includes BIM standards and guidelines, to understand the status of useful information publically available. Second, multiple BIM surveys which targeted Japanese architect and contractor firms are examined to overview the situation from practitioners' point of view. Finally, the discussion and conclusion are led to find the fundamental issue to expedite the extensive use of BIM in Japanese architecture, engineering, and construction field.

summary Building information modeling (BIM) is critical to the industry's digital transition. Its diffusion is also expected to improve project economics. However, maintaining adequate information in the common data environment (CDE) typically becomes the bottleneck. Conversations still take place outside of the model workflow, easily becoming untraceable. This article proposes the fusion of the BIM and metaverse, which can serve as a CDE (MaCDE). The metaverse workspace hosts the project meetings, presenting the model as the virtual venue. Avatars' utterances can be automatically recorded, indexed, and tracked. The enhanced traceability of information reduces the burden of dealing with contractual issues and motivates professionals to join, stay, and utilize the model environment. The concept demonstrates that the model can be continuously leveraged regardless of its Level of Development. The increased visibility helps align stakeholder expectations with the model deliverable. The improved coverage and searchability of the archive help recapture the lost revenue, improving the project profitability and the ongoing effort to enhance productivity.

title Wearable Personal Assistants for the Management of Historical Centers

summary One of the main tasks facing the manager of a historical centre is to avoid degradation while retaining the historical value. For this reason, any intervention which takes place on the environment, should be carefully managed. Only when performing a proper diagnosis of the environment and its reality is possible to follow a high quality intervention. The integration of new information technologies has been crucial to the improvement of these processes providing new tools. Within the project called RASMAP, we have designed and implemented a mobile augmented reality platform based on a service oriented architecture. This project introduces the concept of Wearable Personal Assistant (WPA). WPA in the RASMAP platform represents an innovative wearable tool, which provides support to professionals in their daily activities (mechanical engineer, safety responsible person, diagnosis expert, etc.). This tool is based on augmented reality technologies, mobile devices and communication infrastructures. The development of the platform for the WPAs implies addressing several technological challenges: a) to overcome the limitations inherent in the mobile devices: speed, capacity of memory, capacity of storage, graphical features and others, b) to obtain tracking systems that they do not need to alter or to adapt the environment, c) to optimize for the transmission and reproduction of multimedia contents through wireless networks on mobile devices. In this article, we describe the RASMAP platform, as a basis for the development of WPA and the extension of its use for the management of historical centres. The quality and usefulness of the scientific-technological results provided by the WPA have been validated developing a demonstrator for the diagnosis of the conservation status of the historical centre of a small town in the Basque Country. The advantages to be gained by using WPA in the proposed scenario are among others: more efficient processes, improved communication between users, and local and distributed multimedia content records.

summary As the digitalization in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry has been rapidly progressing, building end users will require more coverage of quality data for their built environment. Despite its obvious need, it is seldom for the building information modeling (BIM) to be distributed for such broad use cases thus far. A potential reason for the situation is the lack of the public repository that can provide the adequate access control for various users. Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), including blockchain, is one of the promising resolutions for the problem. Numbers of preceding proposals for DLT-based BIM repository systems (BIM-DLT system) have proved the utility to date. Understanding the statistical facts of their configurations will become a significant assistance to determine the plausible data distribution system, and thus, to strengthen the project information life cycle. This article aims to build a representative framework through the integrated literature review (ILR). The review results showed that the system’s data flow was classified into two patterns. The judgment criteria for selecting the pattern of the system are expected to depend on the purpose of system implementation, and the purpose of automation through smart contracts is more important than the oracle problem.

summary ViSTA is a digital asset management and display system designed for education. The system enables instructors to search a database of digital assets, select the ones they want and save them in sortable virtual slide trays. They can then use those trays for in-class presentations as well as allowing registered students to view them at will from any internet-connected computer. Students register for courses in the ViSTA system through a special code issued by the instructor. Once registered, their ViSTA homepage automatically displays the courses they are registered for and the associated trays for that particular course. Students can also create and modify their own personal trays organized in any fashion they want. These trays can be used for reference, studying for an exam, or for presentation purposes. The ViSTA system helps administrators and faculty manage the digital collection, the courses, the trays, and the user accounts.
