summary This paper proposes the development of a methodology for the digital generation of valid 3D-printed houses designs and fabrication programming, in the search for an emerging architectural language of this technology. The aim is to develop a transparent, generic and variable modeling and management process, based on some parametric patterns for 3D printing, architectural and construction design knowledge. That serves as an outline or insight of what can be designing architectural 3d-printed forms in the Construction 4.0 era. Preliminary results, discussion and further work are presented.

summary Different criteria need to be considered for optimal strategies in the early design stages of urban developments. Under the influence of climate change, the urban heat island effect (UHI) is a phenomenon that gains importance in the early design stages. Here, different parameters, for instance, vegetation ratio in the city district and building density, play a significant role in the UHI effect. These parameters need to be quantified through different simulation tools for optimal climate adaptation and mitigation measures on the urban district scale. However, not all parameters and their influence are clear to the decision-makers and actors in the early design stages. Hence, we propose a Monte Carlo based sensitivity analysis (SA) and uncertainty analysis (UA) to show the significance of different parameters and quantify them. The SA aims to identify the major influencing parameters, whereas the UA quantifies the effect on the energy performance and indoor thermal comfort of occupants. The workflow is integrated into a collaborative design platform and applied in a case study to support decision-makers in the early design stages for new developments, densification, or refurbishment scenarios.

summary This paper posits a design approach that integrates multi-agent generative algorithms and structural topology optimisation to design intricate, structurally efficient forms. The research proposes a connection between two dichotomous principles: architectural complexity and structural efficiency. Both multi-agent algorithms and Bi-directional evolutionary structural optimisation (BESO) (Huang and Xie 2010), are emerging techniques that have significant potential in the design of form and structure.This research proposes a structural behaviour feedback loop through encoding BESO structural rules within the logic of multi-agent algorithms. This hybridisation of topology optimisation and swarm intelligence, described here as SwarmBESO, is demonstrated through two simple structural models. The paper concludes by speculating on the potential of this approach for the design of intricate, complex structures and their potential realisation through additive manufacturing.

summary This paper explains how parametric methods are informed by simulation and prototyping, methods that were deployed during some series of digital fabrication workshops, their evolution and specifically with the objective of fabricating using combination of materials and CNC techniques, such as, 3d printing, laser cutting and milling machine. Teaching these workshops were the results of simulating and prototyping with students from the Biodigital Master (ESARQ UIC 2016) and a workshop done during Sigradi (Florianopolis 2015).

summary One of the major downsides of concrete construction is the difficulty to be adapted, modified and deconstructed. In this work, we look at the potential enabled by the use of Additive Formwork based on Fused Deposition Modelling, in order to design and manufacture structural elements which can be assembled and disassembled easily. We call this new typology of structures Circular Concrete Construction. The paper illustrates an integrated computational workflow, which encompasses design and fabrication. Technological aspects of the 3D printed formwork and its application in reversible node and strut connections are described, with reference to the material and structural aspects, as well as prototyping experiments. The work is a proof of concept that opens perspectives for a new type of reversible concrete construction.

summary Despite its potential to decarbonise the built environment, wood is often found on construction sites as a source of waste rather than building material. In Denmark, wood is mainly used for temporary structures envisioned for short life cycles and single use, after which it is destined for incineration, defining it as “sustainable energy”. This research proposes an innovative design-to-fabrication process for sourcing timber waste as a valuable matter for a novel typology of structural elements, thereby extending their lifecycle and carbon sequestration capabilities. The work employs a voxel-based approach to designing and optimising complex wood structures, utilising computational stress analysis to determine material layouts reflecting the reclaimed stock. The physical construction voxels, with specific material strength and fibre orientation, are laminated into a functionally graded composite structure, namely the Re-VoxLam Beam. This prototype is demonstrated as a proof-of-concept of the proposed approach for decarbonising construction and upcycling wood waste.

summary This paper presents a computationally based methodology arising from the application of weaving techniques for the design and construction of an experimental architectural system, Weaving Enclosure. The research explores the close correspondence between material properties and assembly systems found in the traditional craft of weaving, studied through analytical and laboratory tests, and then implemented through computational design and digital fabrication. The workflow for the generation of specific geometries related to the elastic nature of the material results in the design and fabrication of a self- standing interior partition with digitally conceived patterns, tuned parametrically to provide structural and screening performance.

summary The paper examines citizen participation in a digitally-driven society and the disparity between desired and existing cities. It emphasises the need to transform cities into adaptable environments that respond to the needs of residents. Traditional top-down urban planning often fails to match the flexible nature of digitised urban residents. To address this, an agent-based model is employed, evaluating urban environments based on individual sentiment derived from social media API. The study case of Wittenberge, Germany, showcases the methodology, including the creation of a 3D digital twin using open data sources and generating agents with unique personalities from social media keywords. These agents' "life satisfaction score" reflects their ability to fulfil daily needs and preferences within a 20-minute walking radius.

summary Urban planners and bodies of urban governance maintain an inherent divergence in the internal structures governing the integration of local communities and the fulfilment of their needs. Theoretical frameworks and contemporary digital tools often reinforce those inherent power imbalances, further exacerbating the disconnection between communities and their urban environments. While public administration holds the authority to access and utilise extensive datasets derived from digital urban statistics, they frequently lack the grassroots, bottom-up intelligence that local communities possess. On the other hand, local communities find themselves denied access to their urban data and face limitations in both capability and authority to generate meaningful changes in the urban fabric. This paper explores the empowerment of local communities with the tools, knowledge, and skillsets necessary to act upon their inherent bottom-up local intelligence to enable community-generated interventions and solutions to urban challenges. Through the context of Kottbusser Tor, Berlin, Germany, this study develops a toolbox designed to equip communities with the means to facilitate self-organised actions.

summary The SXIX flâneur has mutated and unfolded by acquiring new urban consumption tools and logic. With the rise of smart cities, digital technologies act in the city, reconfiguring a phenomenon that represents new ways the citizen experiences and redefines the city. In Vidialab several projects combining digital technologies with urban-architectural heritage are developed. Three case studies representative of the application of different technologies are chosen. This paper seeks to reflect on these urban practices and their correlates from the perspective of the digital flâneur and the smart city.

summary This work is the outcome of a multidisciplinary collaboration in the context of the VidiaLab (Laboratorio de Visualización Digital Avanzada). It proposes an application of interactive video mapping techniques as a form of experiencing the Fray Bentos industrial landscape, declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2015. An immersive environment was created by enriching a physical scale model of the site with projected digital images and information, providing new and attractive ways of interaction with the cultural heritage. Proposals for future work and educational applications of the developed tools are also discussed.

summary This study has been carried out during the Course of Ergotecnica Edile hold at the Instituto Dipartimentale di Architettura e Urbanistica of Catania University, and it has been addressed to the students of the Faculty of Civil Engineering (manufacturing and direction of civil works). The present study aims at instructing the students as refers to planning, through computers, erecting yards. Work-planning is specifically important with reference both to the starting program and to the carrying on of the work. Within this context, workplanning is useful as regard the control and contingent correction of the work. In the latter case, divergencies between work-evolution and forecast are of primary value.
