summary Fractal geometry provides a powerful tool to explore the world of non-integer dimensions. Very short programs, easily comprehensible, can generate an extensive range of shapes and colors that can help us to understand the world we are living. This shapes are specially interesting in the simulation of plants, mountains, clouds and any kind of landscape, from deserts to rain-forests. The environment design, aleatory or conditioned, is one of the most important contributions of fractal geometry to CAAD. On a small scale, the design of fractal textures makes possible the simulation, in a very concise way, of wood, vegetation, water, minerals and a long list of materials very useful in photorealistic modeling.

summary Although sound is now extensively used to enrich multimedia applications in the form of simple audio signals, earcons, musical passages and speech, it has unfortunately been under-utilized as a means of data representation. Sound, having many characteristics which enable it to convey multi-dimensional information, provides a broad channel for dynamically presenting data in a learning environment. This paper looks into how teaching concepts of building structures to students of architecture and engineering through computers and multimedia can be enhanced by enlisting the use of appropriate sound parameters. Sound is useful in presenting redundant or supplementary information such as in portraying building structural response to static and dynamic external loading. This process of audiolization, which refers to the use of sounds to present data, can alleviate much of the cognitive load that usually burdens visual displays and has been used to some degree of success in various studies on scientific representation. Where appropriate, audiolization can be synchronized to more established visualization processes to provide more effective multi-modal multimedia systems for the study of building structures.

title Design visualisation using product data technology

summary Because of its monolitic nature, visualisation software, integrated with legacy engineering applications, contains every possible feature one might use, whether or not a user really wants them. With the advent of distributed objects and interpreted platform-independent languages such as Java and VRML, it is possible to develop cross-platform portable visualisation software and components that work in plug and play manner. Adopting these advances, rapid visualisation can considerably simplify the job of maintaining the lifecycle activities of a product. This paper aims to introduce new levels of support to engineers throughout the integrated product life cycle process by dealing with issues such as rapid platform independent visualisation and product data technology. The paper demonstrates the visualisation of product models using roads as an example.

summary A Generative Design System (GDS) allows for the generation and exploration of a wide number of design alternatives and for the automation of analysis and optimization processes. Algorithmic Design (AD) tools effectively support the development of GDSs, but they tend to be less appealing for the usage of such systems, as they rely on complex algorithmic descriptions of the design that quickly become overwhelming for less experienced programmers. The usage of GDSs is facilitated by Design Space Exploration Interfaces (DSEIs), which allows users to iteratively explore, visualize, and select design alternatives among the multidimensional design space defined by the GDS. DSEIs promote the collaboration between designers, clients, and end-users, making GDSs more interactive and more accessible. DSEIs rely on graphical user interfaces that relieve users from the burden of dealing with AD programs. The creation of such interfaces can be automated, so that they can be quickly created and modified. Although AD-based DSEIs exist for at least three decades, they have been more intensively researched and commercialized over the past eight years. In this article, existing AD-based DSEIs are reviewed, characterized, and compared according to several criteria, such as: navigation, visualization, search, ranking, grouping, filtering, and selection techniques. From this comparative study, a set of guidelines for the development of DSEIs is proposed.

summary As disciplines converge and new capabilities are developed for programmable materials and self-assembly across length scales and industrial applications, designers will need new models for understanding the fundamental principles within this new paradigm. This paper outlines the key ingredients for self-assembly through a number of recent projects including the BioMolecular Self-Assembly and Chiral Self-Assembly projects. Further possibilities of non-deterministic self-assembly will be highlighted through asymmetrical units, nucleus models and hierarchical assemblies. Finally, opportunities for high-yield self-assembly and future applications for manufacturing and construction scenarios will be outlined. Self-assembly offers a glimpse into a future world of highly programmable, intelligent materials that promise far more adaptive, resilient and efficient built environments.

summary Product classes share the same basic abstract layout, despite their great diversity. The present paper intends to (de)code the variety of types embedded in the class of multipurpose chairs. The contribution of this research is the development of a generative design tool, to be used at the conceptual chair design stage. A framework of five stages is proposed: (1) sample definition, considering chairs with a large diversity of types; (2) analysis of the syntax and semantics of the class through ontological classification; (3) development of a generic shape grammar, innovatively applied to product design; (4) implementation of a digital tool, that provides an interface to manipulate the chair components visualized in a 3D digital model; and (5) user evaluation of the program, in order to draw conclusions on the usability and usefulness of the tool and to collect inputs for further developments.

title Navigating Design Spaces: Finding Designs, Design Collections, and Design Subspaces

summary Generative design systems can generate a wide panoply of solutions, from which designers search for those thatbest suit their interests. However, without guidance, this search can be highly inefficient, and many interestingsolutions may remain unexplored. This problem is mitigated with automated exploration methods. Still, the onestypically provided by generative design tools are mostly based on black-box methods that drastically reduce therole of the designer, while more straightforward white-box mechanisms are dispersedly found in specificapplications. This paper proposes the Navigator tool, which gathers a set of white-box mechanisms that automate the generation of default, random, similar and hybrid designs and design subspaces, while also supportingthe generation of design collections. The proposed mechanisms were tested with two generative systems thatcreate, respectively, tower and chair designs. We expect that, by providing understandable mechanisms fornavigating design spaces, designers can become more engaged in the search process

summary The housing demand in Latin America has promoted to build big complexes with repetitive designs to ensure their execution and commercialization, but neglecting the differences in occupation, cultures, ages, abilities, genders, climates and locations. Producing low quality, environmental deterioration and social alienation. This work exposes a parametric programming and robotic construction strategy to develop a varied residential process. Based on structural volumes and 3d-printed walls, to provide a diversity of housing configurations. The modular generation of volumes and development of the envelope is programmed to meet various thermal and occupational conditions, with printing trajectories for the walls according to the equipment, execution processes and material capacities. A repertoire of 494 residential volumes has been defined and prototype walls have been made, suggesting an innovative design system, wich provides a new paradigm for housing construction with digital technologies and robotic execution to diversify residential quality.

summary La Plata Cathedral Building, Main church of the capital city of Buenos Aires Province, registered in the nave of San Pedro Basilic given its huge size, placing it among the most important churches in the world. The Executing Unit has decided to split the treatment of the building into three biddings, the first of which will consist in the preservation, restoration and revaluation of the external views of the Cathedral. The second stage will consist in the micropiling and reinforcement of the foundations, and the third and last stage will be the completion of the building. summary In order to contribute to the elaboration of more expressive architectural animations, some famous films, documentaries of buildings and award-winning animations were analyzed. This was carried out examining the cinematographic techniques used at three levels of filming language; image setting, shot movements and montage, according to concepts described in theoretical texts. The analysis revealed an extensive use of techniques, in particular in movies, that give graphic diversity and perceptual stability. Based on that, it proposes some ideas for the planning of an architectural animation and a computer implementation of some filmic concepts, in particular related to movements of the point-of-view. This study suggest a fragmented view of building designs, to get an appealing moving presentation, with visual interest and continuity, as such should be also in architecture.

summary It proposes a procedure to elaborate animated presentations of architectural designs based on perceptual properties, filmmaking practice and characteristics of digital systems. This approach set up four steps; preparation of narrative and visual content, elaboration or adjustment of digital modelling, production of animated views and final edition of presentation. Currently it works in the evaluation of this method making some examples and the computer implementation of several tasks. This work suggests specific features for architectural animations and its possibilities to express design issues, remarking the visual diversity and development of meanings. summary This project seeks to digitally recover, restore and preserve the architectural heritage of Uruguay through 3D scanning, with the aim of creating an interactive Metaverse that represents this heritage. To do this, virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality (VR/AR/MR) technologies will be used as key tools. The spectrum of relevant buildings is wide, considering works of architecture with structural, formal and testimonial value. The digitization of these works presents diverse challenges, from urban to rural settings. It seeks to establish a consistent methodology using data capture and processing tools, as well as open standards for the exchange of information. In addition, the importance of involving the community in the study and use of the selected architectural heritage is emphasized.

summary Augmented Reality is one of the fields of technological development most currently used for various purposes. However, little is known about the genesis of AR in the collective imagination. It is perfectly legitimate to argue that the AR pays special tribute to fantasy literature and the film genre of Sci-Fi. Based on the definition of Azuma, AR must meet three conditions which can be traced in various fiction works of the twentieth century, even before the AR was conceptually defined. This work is proposed to investigate the literary and cinematic sources that give rise to the concept of AR.

summary Montevideo has a new visitor. In the heritage building of the german architect Karl Trambauer, located in the Old City, a new presence was installed filling the vacuum left by its former collapsed dome, seeking to restore a message, adding a new vision and recovering the lost dialogue between the architecture, the city and its inhabitants. This paper summarizes and explains the experience of the workshop Adaptation 2015, held on September 2015 at the Universidad de la República, Uruguay. Exposing the theoretical framework, design strategies, morphogenetic development, digital manufacturing experimentations, conclusions and open questions from the experience made. We will go through this temporary intervention on Trambauer’s building, being a rare but symbiotic object, with parametric genes, digital and handcrafted manufacture, and also looking for the impact of theory and academic practices in the city.

summary The combination of new materials and digital design has a transformative potential, providing building products and architecture tailored specifically to the clients’ needs and site requirements. This is the essence of the architecture of mass costumisation or personalised production. How can one demonstrate this physically when in essence the product is significantly ahead of current production capabilities? This was the dilemma faced by architects James Timberlake and Stephen Kieran of KieranTimberlake Associates, when asked to design a pavilion for the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in the autumn of 2003. Their response is the SmartWrap Pavilion. The SmartWrap concept will deliver shelter, climate control, lighting, information display and power with a printed and layered polymer composite. The aluminium-framed pavilion is clad in a printed skin based on a combination of polyester and its derivative polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which was developed with DuPont. The pavilion was designed using a single project model, and all the aluminium extrusions of the frame were barcoded. This coding defined their structural and construction properties.

summary The aim of this paper is to present the partial results of the project "La ciudad inteligente; un palimpsesto digital", which is currently being developed. The project focuses into the emerging paradigm of Smart cities from a regional perspective, transcending the timeless notion of urban-rural dichotomy, to focus on the territory as an integral cultural landscape. Reflection, but also experimentation on specific social-based technological applications applied to territory studies, constitute an essential tool in building the reality of a smart city. From the design and implementation of a strategic action plan designed to be completed in four years, this paper shows objectives, theoretical basis, used tools and partial results of the experiment carried out in the Paisaje Industrial Fray Bentos, recently declared "World Heritage" by UNESCO.

summary The benefits of additive manufacturing technologies for the production of customized construction elements has been well documented for several decades. Multi-material additive manufacturing (MM-AM) enhances these capacities by introducing region-specific characteristics to printed objects. Several examples of the production of multi-material assemblies, including functionally-graded materials (FGMs) exist at the architectural scale, but none are known for ceramics. Factors limiting the development and application of this production method include the cost and complexity of existing MM-AM machinery, and the lack of a suitable computational workflow for the production of MM-AM ceramics, which often relies on a continuous linear toolpath. We present a method for the MM-AM of paste-based ceramics that allows for unique material expressions with relatively simple end-effector design. By borrowing methods of co-extrusion found in other industries and incorporating a 4th axis of motion into the printing process, we demonstrate a precisely controlled MM-AM deposition strategy for paste-based ceramics. We present a computational workflow for the generation of toolpaths, and describe full-body tiles and 3D artifacts that can be produced using this method. Future process refinements include the introduction of more precise control of material gradation and refinements to material composition for increased element functionality.

summary Generative House is a collaborative exploration of advanced technologies for lower - and working - class housing carried out by industrial and academic partners in southern Brazil. It seeks to test generative procedures and digital manufacturing to develop a flexible building system for low - cost sustainable housing in order to inspire future developments in this field by developing an urban grammar through manufacturing models and generative programming, as well as parametric design of panels assembled using digital fabrication. Scale models and full - scale prototype with timber boards have been built, demonstrating the feasibility of the approach proposed. However, further refinement of the adopted procedures and technical applications is required.
