It is the main goal to make possible to any citizen the access and the ability to manipulate spatial information in order to, through them, participate in a qualified manner in the decision making process about where, how and when a spatial intervention will be done by the government. This is done by creating a map server called GeoMetrópoles.

summary The present paper describes a research that explores the design and production of customised architectural ceramic components defined through parametric relations of biomorphic inspiration and to be built through additive manufacturing. In this sense, is presented a case study that develops a system of both architectural and structural components - a column system. The definition process of the system is mediated by computational design, implementing not only structural analysis and optimization strategies, but also mimetic formal characteristics of nature to an initial grid, creating a model that adapts its formal attributes, depending on its assumptions and the material constraints. This process resulted in the definition of a set of solutions that better answer to a specific design problem.

summary Architecture is an area of study in which design solution visualization is essential. It is during the design phase that the projective doubts are clarified. Augmented Reality (AR) enables the visualization of virtual elements in the real environment. In this paper, visualization strategies will be presented in Augmented Reality for the discussion of alternatives design solution in architecture. These strategies are presented in an experiment in which perceptions of users are observed through a workshop. We compare two display strategies (AR mobile x AR projected) in four types of representation. As a contribution, we present a critical analysis of the benefits and limitations of the strategies used.

summary Driven by the statement: what if buildings could think, this work continues with another inquiry, what would happen if the building elements knew how to grow, regardless of the material they are made of, or if that building could respond throughout history to different challenges or structural needs. Therefore, this paper considers studying other structures evolved in time, such as trees and their predefined laws of growth. The construction elements could then be developed, responding to future scenarios, having the capacity to grow in volume, conserving their material properties, as a dynamic organism. This work presents a parametric approach, which, with the help of FEA, will stimulate the growth of the cross-section of a tree stem as if it were the cross-section of a building element.

summary Heuristic computation techniques have been used in a wide range of fields, demonstrating their capacity to solve highly complex optimization problems. This article presents the most common techniques and their extension into the multi-objective optimization field, and emphasizes in the application of them in structural and architectural design by presenting examples within topics like: topological, shape and dimensional optimization of truss structures, roof optimization for sunlight conditions and area minimization, grid structures, façade design, life cycle cost and environmental impact, energy efficiency and construction costs, morphogenetic structural optimization for shell structures, acoustical optimization, evolutionary architectural design, architectural layout design optimization, RC frames optimization, and land use zoning, within others. Finally, the conclusion leads to the recognition of heuristic computation not only as an optimization tool, but also as an important component of a design methodology for creating innovative, creative, efficient, well performing, and aesthetically pleasant architectural/engineering objects.

title JointSearch: Efficient parametric detailing preparation through user-defined and property-based joint type filtering

summary Detailing joints are important when designing structures. In this design process, a structure is divided into different joint types. Digital fabrication and algorithmic aided design have changed the conceptions and requirements of joint detailing. However, parametric tools that can efficiently identify joint types based on the solution space are not available. This article presents a methodology that efficiently generates topological relations and enables the user to assign joint instances to joint types. A series of property-based search criteria components is applied to define the solution space of a joint type. Valid joints are coherently filtered, deconstructed and outputted for detailing. The article explains both the methodology and programming-related aspects of the joint type filtering. The article concludes that the developed methodology offers the desired flexibility and may be suitable for other materials and applications.

title InstrumentAll: a Virtual Instrument

summary In this paper we describe InstrumentAll, a musical interface that uses a transparent tablet as an input device. The tablet was developed for the investigation of rhythmic ability in bimanual coordination. The interface, InstrumentAll, a first prototype for the investigation of the tabletas a musical instrument, has only three controls that allows to select instrument, percussion and musical pattern. Despite its basic simplicity, surprising results were obtained. New possibilities for the interface design and interaction are suggested. The transparent tablet and InstrumentAll proved to be appropriate for the study of human perception.

title ArTbitrariness in Music

summary Evolution is now considered not only powerful enough to bring about the biological entities as complex as humans and conciousness, but also useful in simulation to create algorithms and structures of higher levels of complexity than could easily be built by design. In the context of artistic domains, the process of human-machine interaction is analyzed as a good framework to explore creativity and to produce results that could not be obtained without this interaction. When evolutionary computation and other computational intelligence methodologies are involved, every attempt to improve aesthetic judgement we denote as ArTbitrariness, and is interpreted as an interactive iterative optimization process. ArTbitrariness is also suggested as an effective way to produce art through an efficient manipulation of information and a proper use of computational creativity to increase the complexity of the results without neglecting the aesthetic aspects [Moroni et al., 2000]. Our emphasis will be in an approach to interactive music composition. The problem of computer generation of musical material has received extensive attention and a subclass of the field of algorithmic composition includes those applications which use the computer as something in between an instrument, in which a user "plays" through the application's interface, and a compositional aid, which a user experiments with in order to generate stimulating and varying musical material. This approach was adopted in Vox Populi, a hybrid made up of an instrument and a compositional environment. Differently from other systems found in genetic algorithms or evolutionary computation, in which people have to listen to and judge the musical items, Vox Populi uses the computer and the mouse as real-time music controllers, acting as a new interactive computer-based musical instrument. The interface is designed to be flexible for the user to modify the music being generated. It explores evolutionary computation in the context of algorithmic composition and provides a graphical interface that allows to modify the tonal center and the voice range, changing the evolution of the music by using the mouse[Moroni et al., 1999]. A piece of music consists of several sets of musical material manipulated and exposed to the listener, for example pitches, harmonies, rhythms, timbres, etc. They are composed of a finite number of elements and basically, the aim of a composer is to organize those elements in an esthetic way. Modeling a piece as a dynamic system implies a view in which the composer draws trajectories or orbits using the elements of each set [Manzolli, 1991]. Nonlinear iterative mappings are associated with interface controls. In the next page two examples of nonlinear iterative mappings with their resulting musical pieces are shown.The mappings may give rise to attractors, defined as geometric figures that represent the set of stationary states of a non-linear dynamic system, or simply trajectories to which the system is attracted. The relevance of this approach goes beyond music applications per se. Computer music systems that are built on the basis of a solid theory can be coherently embedded into multimedia environments. The richness and specialty of the music domain are likely to initiate new thinking and ideas, which will have an impact on areas such as knowledge representation and planning, and on the design of visual formalisms and human-computer interfaces in general. This software allows the integration of urban planning and graphic design, has low production costs , unifies the languages among professionals from diverse backgrounds who work with urban furniture. The methology for the creation of plates and the results obtained with the software are presented below.

summary Since 1996, Kumamoto University has repeated several experiments to apply web-based collaborative design techniques to a junior design studio aiming to stimulate studentsí interaction in the class and to enhance their design abilities. When it became clear after a two-year experiment that writing web pages and uploading them to a web server was a barrier of communication for students, the authors developed a web-based groupware called GW-Notebook, and started using it in 1998. In the fall semester of 2000, the authors introduced a new design studio program, and tested the revised version of the groupware, GW-Notebook III. This paper discusses the features of the system, and gives an outline of the studio program and some of the findings in the studio as well as the use of the revised system.

summary Though it is the basic tasks of designers in a schematic design stage both to program design requirements and, then, to develop spatial images of a building following those programs, most CAD systems have lacked convenient utilities to interpret a program for some forms of spatial designs, or to assess developed designs referring to the prepared programs. This paper, in the first part, reviews design procedures of designers and the internal limits of the existing CAD system, and in the second part, discusses a schematic design system that the authors have developed. Presenting the case study with the system, the authors show that the system provides a convenient environment of schematic design.

summary The authors have developed a basic, interactive, primitive-instancing 3-D modeling system (CAADF), which is based on a high-speed 3-D color graphic workstation, and have tested its potential ability to support spatial design studies in an architectural design studio. After- a review of work performed by a student with the system, this paper concludes that this system provides an attractive environment for spatial design studies which conventional CAD systems have not achieved. The interactive process of 3-D modeling in perspective or isometric view images and the dynamic viewing utility are the most successful features of the system. In contrast to those advantages, the resolution of color graphic display is a limitation of the system. The authors conclude that if sufficiently many appropriate 3-D geometric primitives are supported by a CAD system, a primitive instancing method can significantly reduce the work entailed in object modeling.

Though designers normally hope to elaborate on their ideas using separate sets of representation models suitable for respective studies, a present CAD that is designed to build a single set 3D model, has limited its ability as a tool for a schematic design. Assuming this as the base concept, authors have studied to develop a prototype of a schematic design system, customizing AutoCAD R14J: Schematic Design System '98 (SDS'98). It has convenient utilities both for building separate sets of representation models and for integrating and reconciling those models to build a single consolidate model. This paper discusses the common procedures of schematic design studies, necessary functional features for SDS, a case study of the system use, and finally, the advantages and the disadvantages of the proposed system.
