title Integrating Generative Modelling and Design Process

summary While researchers learn to generate design options with a computer, the question of how a designer interacts with these options remains largely unexcavated. This paper explores how a generative system should interact with a designer. It argues that limitations in human cognition require a designer to manage the complexity of his task with a creative thinking strategy called Perception-Imagination Overlay. To support this, a generative system should present a progression of contextual design “moves” rather than a collection of finished solutions. After validating a set of interface requirements, the paper presents an example interface. The paper concludes that the development of computational methods cannot be legitimately isolated from the development of an appropriate designer-system interaction, and that integrating these concerns might transform our conception of generative systems.

summary In this paper, we describe an automated remote monitoring system to uncover the impact of environmental phenomena on 3D printed bio-polymers behaviour and lifespan. The novel fully automated in-service framework allows for long-term monitoring with a wide range of wired and optical sensors and to correlate and analyse the gathered data. A focus is set on non-invasive measurements with Computer Vision technology. Here we introduce a computational image pipeline that allows for automated analysis and feedback on monitored bio-composite samples and assemblies. The framework is easily deployable, cloud-based, and accessible remotely. We evaluate the function and reliability of the framework in two design cases indoors and outdoors and gather insight for future practice with bio-based materials on both design and in-service levels.

title Machine learning for architectural design: Practices and infrastructure

summary In this article, we propose that new architectural design practices might be based on machine learning approaches to better leverage data-rich environments and workflows. Through reference to recent architectural research, we describe how the application of machine learning can occur throughout the design and fabrication process, to develop varied relations between design, performance and learning. The impact of machine learning on architectural practices with performance-based design and fabrication is assessed in two cases by the authors. We then summarise what we perceive as current limits to a more widespread application and conclude by providing an outlook and direction for future research for machine learning in architectural design practice.

summary Non-Standard elements in architecture bear the promise of a more suitable and sustainable solutions. A new understanding of design evolves, which is focusing on relational and evolutionary approaches. Parametric design tools and computer controlled production facilitate the emerging complex spatial constructions, as they are able to imply and feedback knowledge. Whereas the story of non-standard elements and mass customization is quickly told the actual facilitation of these techniques bears a lot of unresolved questions. We undertook a design based research taking in the whole process of digital design to production of complex shaped geometry. In close cooperation with wood construction software- and machine industry we fabricated a 1:1 demonstrator show casing the potential of digital wood fabrication.

summary The research-based installation, The Rise, is led by the concept of a growing architecture able to sense and dynamically adapt to its environment as it grows into form while continuously reacting to its own material performance and behavioural constraints. This process is enabled through the careful integration of digital simulation techniques with multi-hierarchical generative design approaches. Aggregations of variably sized bundles of rattan core multiply, bend, branch and recombine into a distributed assembly that manifests an alternative to traditional structural systems. The hybrid approach links a material system with simulation and the iterative generation of geometry through a process of calibration at different stages of design. The project leverages emerging computational strategies for growth in a model for an architectural practice that engages the complexity and interdependencies that characterise a contemporary design practice.

summary In this paper, we propose a design of an interactive message wall as a public display for large group setting such as a university community to encourage user participation, social interaction and creation of user content. It is a public display for collective sharing of thoughts. It is also a portal for online users to make their presence felt in the physical place. Both users at the physical place and in an online virtual world can post messages to the interactive message wall. The paper will present user studies carried out with a mock-up message wall to establish how onsite users use it, their preferred ways to leave messages, what medium of content (voice, photo, text, video) they are willing to share, and user participation. The results of the user studies will inform the design of the interactive message wall and provide learning points on how to promote user participation.

summary The Mirrored Message Wall is a cross-world digital public display located in both real and virtual world, for collective sharing of thoughts and messages and serves to connect the real world and virtual communities. The wall was installed at a university library foyer and concurrently at a 3D virtual campus for user studies. This paper presents its design, social factors considered in the design, implementation, and the findings of the user survey and observations. The results confirm that such an installation does encourage people to interact with each other and the results will inform a better design for the next version.

summary This case study describes the integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) into a design workflow that envisions future scenarios for concept development. While image-based GenAI tools like MidJourney and Stable Diffusion have garnered attention from designers for their ability to visualise ideas rapidly, integrating textual GenAI, like ChatGPT-3.5, in design workflows has been less explored. This case study investigates how future thinking techniques can be digitized and accelerated using ChatGPT-3.5 to create a textual GenAI-embedded design workflow. Next, we test the workflow with postgraduate design students to speculate future scenarios, substantiate scenarios with existing circumstantial evidence, and develop a concept design based on the scenario. The outcomes highlight that GenAI suggested social changes from a range of disciplines, and designers still need to search for the source to clarify and evidence the changes manually. The case study concludes by describing the benefits of using textual GenAI in design workflows, and future research needed to strengthen the use of textual GenAI as a tool for design concept development.

summary A prime objective of a visual database for design thinking is to support trains of thought. The game of "Rhyme or Reason" provides a clue for the cognitive basis for mind racing. In particular, it shows why in creative design speed matters, why we need memory cues, why reasoning by lateral association and conceptual positioning are as important as logical pattern matching. Unlike a conventional database, such as a banking system, which is concerned with the correct convergence on specific records, visual databases for design thinking need to support divergent exploration. The paper presents a method of "multivalent" tagging of discrete items in the database. It provides for knowledge of relations. This achieves two things. Firstly, it enables the search engine to return a specific database item in different exploratory contexts because of the multiple ways it can meet the search criteria. Secondly, the different tagged aspects of the item can be used to trigger new exploratory routes. The user can explore other tagged aspects whose relationship to the original search criteria need not exist in the indexing system. Short of this, a search is dependent on direct literal or other variants of pattern matching to retrieve only parts of a database. The strategies for sustainable input-output, and for search-storage of a visual database demand high modularity and generic structures which are not dependent on specific software or computer system. The paper specifies its open structure and its transparent and re-configurable methods. These are non-trivial design issues.

summary The objective of the project is to design a reproducible clay sculpting process with an industrial robotic arm using parametric con- trol to directly translate mesh geometry from Computer Aided Design (CAD) environment into a lump of clay. This is accomplished through an algorithmic design process developed in Grasshopper using the C# programming language. The design process is enabled by our robotics modelling and simulation library which provides tools for kinematics modelling, motion planning, visual simulation and networked com- munication with the robotic system. Our process generates robot joint axis angle instructions through inverse kinematics which results into linear tool paths realised in physical space. Unlike common subtrac- tive processes such as Computer Numeric Control (CNC) milling where solid material is often pulverised during machining operations, our process employs a carving technique to remove material by dis- placement and deposition due to the soft and self-adhesive nature of the clay material. Optimisation of self-cleaning paths are implemented and integrated into the sculpting process to increase pathing efficiency and end product quality. This paper documents the process developed, the obstacles faced in motion planning of the robotic system and dis- cusses the potential for creative applications in digital fabrication us- ing advanced machines that in certain terms exceed human capability yet in others are unable to reach the quality of handmade works of art.

summary This paper documents the development of our proposed fabrication strategy to manufacture doubly-curved Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) cladding panels for facade components or internal walls. It uses a customised glass fibre knitted textile preform which is edge-shaped and sprayed with polyester resin to become a solidified composite panel. In this instance, we investigate the design of the textile preform and the development of an adjustable edge-shaping mechanism employed in this curved composite panel fabrication. We then test the shaping mechanism through the fabrication of several doubly-curved GFRP panels and compare their geometries to their respective digital models.

summary In this paper we introduce a content-oriented scheme for protocol studies of designers and demonstrate its benefit for CAAD research. The structure of the coding scheme is described. We discuss how this method can benefit CAAD research and its differences from the process-oriented method used previously. With this method we analyze data to describe the design process as the combination of sensor-driven and process-driven processes. The results emphasize the importance of the sensor-driven processes in the design process. As a consequence we are able to propose some areas for CAAD tools that are based on the cognitive behaviours of designers.

summary This study demonstrates that an on-virtu digital sketching environment is cognitively almost identical to in-situ free-hand sketching. The former can support the designers’ drawing activities with good resolution, and can provide remote communication in a face-to-face atmosphere. The study’s empirical examination of the environment rested on protocol analysis and coding schemes of the design-prototype and the reflection-in-action. The results indicate that the two environments are similar in terms of design-process speed, design process, and design content. The results provide implications for CAD and design practice.

summary The process of Industrial Design extends from market analysis, conceptualization, form generation to performance prediction, engineering analysis and user analysis etc. This requires a wide range of design knowledge and techniques from different disciplines. Computer-based support to industrial design is limited because the majority of the CAD systems deal with only geometric models and representations. The recent advancement in generative techniques utilizing evolutionary computation methods provides an opportunity for the study of more creative and systematic ways of supporting the industrial design process. However, one of the problems associated with the existing generative techniques is the difficulty in evaluating a large number of solutions generated by a generative system. This paper addresses this problem by presenting a system framework for industrial design support through an integrated application of Artificial Intelligence techniques.

title Exploring the Roles of Exploring the roles of Sketches and Knowledge in the Design Process

summary The needs of computational tools provide the motivation to have a better understanding of the roles of knowledge and sketches in the design process. The inadequacies of current computer-aided conceptual design tools result from our vague comprehension of the nature of the design process. The hypothesis of this study is that the design process involves interlocked and multi-mode processes in which design knowledge and sketches interact with each other to advance the design process. These interactions make current computer-aided design systems unsatisfactory in the conceptual design process. The understanding of these interactions would provide the foundation of more useful computational tools and potentially play a role in developing better pedagogical methods.

This research utilized both process-oriented and content-oriented coding schemes to examine different aspects of the design process. Concurrent and retrospective protocols were analyzed to determine their utility in revealing the design processes. Retrospective protocols and the content-oriented coding scheme were selected for design cognition studies in this research, and the procedures of experiments and analyses were described in detail.

The results of encoded protocols were presented in terms of segments, levels, and instances. They represented the design process in a way that enabled us to observe the interactions among sketches, knowledge, and different cognitive levels.

The examination of the conceptual design process demonstrated its features of interlinked levels and multiple modes; even one snippet of the process contained various modes and sub-processes. The shifting speed of intentions and the vagueness of sketches and functional references were also shown.

The study of the meditated roles of the sketches and knowledge in the design process shows the following. First, sketches are the affordances of perceptual and functional instances while designing. Most of the sketches made by designers are multi-functionally bounded. Second, design knowledge plays various roles in the conceptual design process. The ubiquitous designerly way of knowing demonstrates the differences between active developing and passive utilizing design knowledge. Finally, one of the roles of design sketches and knowledge is shown to be the connector among different cognitive levels in the design process.

The unpredictability of the design process is demonstrated in the results. Design knowledge provides previously generated solutions for the problem at hand, and design situatedness describes the phenomenon that a designer uses his/her experience to produce novelty and innovation. A method to measure the design innovation through an encoded protocol is proposed based on the concept of situated creativity.

The implications for future computer-aided design systems are presented based on the roles of sketches, knowledge, and situatedness in the interlinked and multimode design process. The concept of cognition-oriented CAD is proposed to provide empirical clues to improve current CAD systems.

summary In this paper, we design and implement 40 identical modular architectural blocks, named Tangible Pixels, with swarm computing mechanism embedded. Each unit of tangible pixels is a customized, which has three functions_sensing, communication/computing, and actuating abilities to collective reactions to its surroundings. We further arrange this set of tangible swarm into a public interactive installation to explore the potential research and design territories of human swarm interaction and adaptive artifact. Via a preliminary onsite observation, we prove that this adaptive interaction model did overturn the conventional space design and usage as well as user mental model.

summary This study introduces a methodology for the evaluation, among a set of possible plans and/or policies, of a transport system which could reduce the effects of the network congestion on an urban area. Hence it is proposed a procedure which contains a new element compared with the current methodologies that is the final user’s evaluation of the examined system by turning to the application of the contingent valuation method, a technique like stated preferences. The approach we propose is based on the necessity for a determination of an optimal solution to the urban congestion to be established on the politic acceptability by the final user. Solutions which result virtually feasible for a public administration both on a technique and economic point of view often meet hostility by individuals. Consequently, it would be interesting for policy makers to adopt a process of valuation which could let to understand the user’s sensitivity and hostility towards specific configurations of the system, chosen as solution to decongestion (traffic calming, roadpricing, auto-free zones) and consequently to make less unpleasant the strategy to be carried out to control congestion (Harrington et al., 2001). In this way, a user does not judge the implementation of a set of projects made by a decision-maker as imposition and he is willing to pay in order to fulfil the chosen scenario. Finally we describe an application of the proposed methodology relating the definition of the integrated transport system in the metropolitan area of Bari, chief town of Apulia.
