title Automated 3D Reconstruction of Interiors from Point Clouds
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 8 - no. 1, 55-73
summary We present a new technique for the fully automated 3D modelling of indoor environments from a point cloud. The point cloud is acquired with several scans and is afterwards processed in order to segment planar structures, which have a noticeable architectural meaning (floor, ceiling and walls) in the interior. The basic approach to data segmentation is plane sweeping based on a hypothesis-and-test strategy. From the segmentation results, the ground plan is created through cell decomposition by trimming the two-dimensional ground space using half-space primitives. An extension in height of the ground contours makes the generation of the 3D model possible. The so-reconstructed indoor model is saved in CAD format for analysis and further applications or, simply, as a record of the interior geometry.

title A Parochial Comment on Midjourney
source International Journal of Architectural Computing 2023, Vol. 21 - no. 2, 374–379
summary This paper recommends that critical attention towards machine learning should be focused on the ordering procedures at work in these models. More precisely, it draws attention to the central role of ‘latent spaces.’ The paper first explores ‘latent space’ through a series of analogies, and then briefly situates the concept in relation to a genealogy reaching back to developments in mathematical statistics at the turn to the 20th century

source SIGraDi 2003 - [Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Rosario Argentina 5-7 november 2003
summary Acido Surtido is a wide-ranging editorial project free of charge. Whose purpose is to create a place where visual thinking meets and juxtapose at random. Its active principles arise from the chaotic combination, in a 64 x 94 cm sheet of paper, of twenty eight graphic works developed in an independent and parallel way by an equal number of itinerant authors, and based on a frame topic from which plenty of visual ideas are launched. Through this "cadavre exquis" strategy, Acido Surtido calls on the reader's ability to re-elaborate and develop new interpretations, even new for those originally proposed by the authors. Acido Surtido is an offset printed centrefold, with an impression of 2000 copies.

summary We already have the EEC, that is the European Economic Community. We have to build the CCE, that is the Common Cultural Europe. Architects and building engineers of any european country will be allowed to freely practise in any other country of the EEC. Of course, it is not only matter of coming down of the frontiers, of a greater labour mobility. Not even it will be enough that the university degree courses of the different countries agree to and put into effect the EEC common directives. They need rules and guidelines entering into the merits of practice: rules and guidelines which, rather than a legal and bureaucratic matter, must be the result of a common cultural and technical work, about clear and delimited questions of shared subjects, in which all the community countries be deeply concerned. Analogously, in the very field of research, the project "Human Capital and Mobility" has in view a greater european scientific and technological competitiveness, through an integration of human and material resources of different research centres, such as in shared-cost research projects and in concerted research actions. Such an integration is neither easy nor rapid. The political, social, cultural, technological peculiarities of the countries of the European Community certainly constitute an obstacle for the creation of a supernational cultural and technological pool. of common opportunities. These peculiarities, however, aren't only a restraint for the european community effort of unification and construction of shared goals, constraints, rules, methods, techniques, tools. They mean also a richness, an unrepeatable resourse: they are the result of a historical millenary stratification, which gave rise to urban and architectural contexts, to cultural and technological traditions it would be a serious mistake to waste.

title A NEW APPROACH TO THE INTERACTIVE RESOLUTION OF CONFIGURATION PROBLEMS IN VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS
source 3rd International Symposium on Smart Graphics, Heidelberg, Germany, 2-4, July 2003. http://www.smartgraphics.org/ . Proceedings published by Springer: Lectures notes in Artificial Intelligence.
summary Intelligent Virtual Environments integrate AI techniques with 3D real-time environments. As such, they can support interactive problem solving, provided the underlying AI techniques can produce solutions within a time frame matching that of user interaction. In this paper, we describe an intelligent virtual environment based on Constraint Logic Programming (CLP), integrated in a real-time 3D graphic environment. We have developed an event-based ap-proach through which user interaction can be converted in real-time into appro-priate solver queries which are then translated back into automatic reconfigura-tions of the Virtual Environment (VE). Additionally, this framework supports the interactive exploration of the solution space in which alternative solutions (configurations) can be found. We demonstrate the system behaviour on a con-figuration example. This example illustrates how solutions can be interactively refined by the user through direct manipulation of objects in the VE and how the interactive search of alternative solutions in the VE is supported by these type of systems.

title Artificial Music Composer
source International Conference on Generative Art
summary Traditional Musical Computation Systems had to face the differences between the computational techniques and the characteristics of musical creation. Characteristics such as a high degree of subjectivity, a great irrational component, and a learning process based on the use of examples and environmental absorption, have made music difficult to be formalized through algorithmic methods or classical Artificial Intelligence methods such as Expert Systems. We propose the creation of a cybernetic model of a human composer in a primeval stage of human musical evolution, following a paradigm of cognitive complex models creation, based on the use of the human reference, not only in a static point of view but also considering its evolution through time. Therefore, the proposed system simulates musical creation in one of the first stages of musical evolution, whose main characteristics are the percussive and choral aspects. The system is based on Genetic Algorithms, whose genetic population is integrated by several tribes. This model carries out the task of musical composition, led by the user who expresses his/her musical taste assigning a punctuation to each tribe. The GA selects the worse tribes as individuals to be eliminated. In order to select those tribes which are going to be used as parents, a random function is used, having each tribe a probality proportional to its punctuation. The new tribe is produced by crossing the parent tribes in each individual. Afterwards, mutation takes place in the created individuals. The experiments carried out with this system have proved its functionality in the composition of rhythmic patterns. It is intended to enlarge the experiment's scope by communicating the system via Internet. This would enable its use by users of different musical cultures, taking into account that the system is user-friendly, since it requires no musical knowledge.

summary EMOVERE, interdisciplinary project that aims at creating innovative interactive performance, brings together dance, sound and image. Bio-data related to emotions, heart and respiratory rate, are mediated by dancers and gives them control over music and video- mapping on stage. A creative process occurs through successive approaches, where technical possibilities are systematically explored until controlled, then body expression is lead by Alba Emoting, building an artistic discourse. Video-mapping is used for lighting purposes, creating a visual atmosphere for dancers. Fusion of media on stage creates synesthetic scenery where physical and digital aspects combine and interact in a codependent relationship.

title The solitary confinement cell of punta de rieles: A place with stories to tell
source SIGraDi 2004 - [Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Porte Alegre - Brasil 10-12 november 2004
summary Different people remember the same place differently. The question posed by my research is about how to create a visualization of a place that presents different personal recollections. My research addresses this issue through a case study: the visualization of a women.s political prison, located in Punta de Rieles, Uruguay, during the Uruguayan dictatorship (1973-85). The visualization will be based on the memories recounted by these women. My research will result in a written report and an audiovisual installation. The installation will provide an immersive experience centered on the solitary confinement cell. The implementation suggests changes in lighting in the solitary confinement cell as the main formal expression of the variations in the women.s testimonies.

summary Currently, the land regulation plans define the urban micro-scale, producing standardized and pre-dimensioned blocks and lots, generating monotony, poor urban quality and high infrastructure costs. In the quest for sustainability, studies point to a density and a certain degree of population density to enable urban infrastructures with qualitative and quantitative gains, through concepts of compactness, completeness and connectivity. This study presents possibilities of batch sizing using the Grammatical method of the Form, through morphological configurations and rules presents possibilities of generation of new formats, distribution of urban lots in the neighborhood Valentina, in João Pessoa - PB and discusses results.

source Fioravanti, A, Cursi, S, Elahmar, S, Gargaro, S, Loffreda, G, Novembri, G, Trento, A (eds.), ShoCK! - Sharing Computational Knowledge! - Proceedings of the 35th eCAADe Conference - Volume 1, Sapienza University of Rome, Rome, Italy, 20-22 September 2017, pp. 661-670
summary Hydroassemblies is a research thesis that investigates the architectural potential of a unit-based modular system that can recursively grow in space guided by hydrodynamic principles in order to generate intricate tectonic assemblies, integrating the roles of spatial articulator, water collector/distributor and plant cultivation substrate to foster a symbiotic relation with the urban environment. By implementing principles of circulatory systems in biology, the authors developed a system that grows through recursive formation of loops and articulates its tectonic via a continuous, interconnected branching network. The founding process improves upon a combinatorial algorithm of discrete parts, considering how iterative interactions at the local level have a feedback impact on the growth process at the whole system scale. The paper explores how features, spatial and perceptive qualities, affordances and opportunities emerge at the global scale of the formation from the interplay of local behavioral principles and environmental conditions. The provided implementation is a proof of concept of the production of complex qualities by means of massive quantities of simple elements and interactions.

summary This paper examines the application of graphic technologies in spatial analysis and planning. Firstly it describes the method for organizing, selecting and analysing spatial resources. Secondly, it deals with registration techniques concerning the information collected. Emphasis is given to digital maps linking to elements selected through community based information. The possibility of instantaneous scale migration -from regional spaces to local particularities- provides a deeper knowledge of the spatial configuration. Finally, it argues that this technique, may provide: a comprehensive knowledge of reality; the public diffusion of socio-spatial information; a regional analysis based on the aggregation of local visions.

title Would be Worlds: How simulation is changing the frontiers of science
source John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York.
summary Five Golden Rules is caviar for the inquiring reader. Anyone who enjoyed solving math problems in high school will be able to follow the author's explanations, even if high school was a long time ago. There is joy here in watching the unfolding of these intricate and beautiful techniques. Casti's gift is to be able to let the nonmathematical reader share in his understanding of the beauty of a good theory.-Christian Science Monitor "[Five Golden Rules] ranges into exotic fields such as game theory (which played a role in the Cuban Missile Crisis) and topology (which explains how to turn a doughnut into a coffee cup, or vice versa). If you'd like to have fun while giving your brain a first-class workout, then check this book out."-San Francisco Examiner "Unlike many popularizations, [this book] is more than a tour d'horizon: it has the power to change the way you think. Merely knowing about the existence of some of these golden rules may spark new, interesting-maybe even revolutionary-ideas in your mind. And what more could you ask from a book?"-New Scientist "This book has meat! It is solid fare, food for thought . . . makes math less forbidding, and much more interesting."-Ben Bova, The Hartford Courant "This book turns math into beauty."-Colorado Daily "John Casti is one of the great science writers of the 1990s."-San Francisco Examiner In the ever-changing world of science, new instruments often lead to momentous discoveries that dramatically transform our understanding. Today, with the aid of a bold new instrument, scientists are embarking on a scientific revolution as profound as that inspired by Galileo's telescope. Out of the bits and bytes of computer memory, researchers are fashioning silicon surrogates of the real world-elaborate "artificial worlds"-that allow them to perform experiments that are too impractical, too costly, or, in some cases, too dangerous to do "in the flesh." From simulated tests of new drugs to models of the birth of planetary systems and galaxies to computerized petri dishes growing digital life forms, these laboratories of the future are the essential tools of a controversial new scientific method. This new method is founded not on direct observation and experiment but on the mapping of the universe from real space into cyberspace. There is a whole new science happening here-the science of simulation. The most exciting territory being mapped by artificial worlds is the exotic new frontier of "complex, adaptive systems." These systems involve living "agents" that continuously change their behavior in ways that make prediction and measurement by the old rules of science impossible-from environmental ecosystems to the system of a marketplace economy. Their exploration represents the horizon for discovery in the twenty-first century, and simulated worlds are charting the course. In Would-Be Worlds, acclaimed author John Casti takes readers on a fascinating excursion through a number of remarkable silicon microworlds and shows us how they are being used to formulate important new theories and to solve a host of practical problems. We visit Tierra, a "computerized terrarium" in which artificial life forms known as biomorphs grow and mutate, revealing new insights into natural selection and evolution. We play a game of Balance of Power, a simulation of the complex forces shaping geopolitics. And we take a drive through TRANSIMS, a model of the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, to discover the root causes of events like traffic jams and accidents. Along the way, Casti probes the answers to a host of profound questions these "would-be worlds" raise about the new science of simulation. If we can create worlds inside our computers at will, how real can we say they are? Will they unlock the most intractable secrets of our universe? Or will they reveal instead only the laws of an alternate reality? How "real" do these models need to be? And how real can they be? The answers to these questions are likely to change the face of scientific research forever.

summary This work reports on the development of assistive resources aimed at representing and interpreting the architectural language of a cultural heritage that houses a museum. The resources are designed to enhance the inclusion of visually impaired individuals through a codesign approach, involving this group in the development process. The tactile models produced represent the three-dimensionality of each room within the house, highlighting its proportions, and serve as fitting elements in a tactile map, which corresponds to the first floor of the building. These materials were designed to interact on a tangible table located in the Museum. The three-dimensional models include a fiducial on their base, which, when inserted into the tactile map, placed on the tangible table, triggers an audio description. The integration of these resources facilitates communication through a multi-format and multisensory approach, contributing to the inclusion of diverse audiences and promoting the greater access to culture and knowledge.

summary Industrial lands are the most vulnerable urban typologies in areas undergoing urban regeneration. They are considered less adaptive to integrated residential typologies, and their legacies are threatened under fast gentrification. The goal of this paper is to explore a sustainable strategy to address the conflict between urban sprawl and industrial conservation in Alexandria, Sydney. Through the application of a sequential evolutionary simulation, the presented research proposes a potential mixed-use scheme to rejuvenate the existing industrial district of Alexandria in an integrative manner without necessitating its destruction. This paper provides a prototype of urban regeneration, optimised by a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, that demonstrates the necessity of industrial integration in the pursuit of true mixed use urban typologies.
