summary This research proposes to support the reading of physical ambiences by the development of a representational technique which compiles, in a numerical interface, two types of data: sensory and filmic. These data are recorded through the use of a portable array equipped with sensors (Potvin 1997, 2002, 2004) as well as the acquisition of Video information of the moving environment. The compilation of information is carried out through a multi-media approach, by means of a program converting the environmental data into dynamic diagrams, as well as the creation of an interactive interface allowing a possible diffusion on the Web. This technique, named APMAP/Video, makes it possible to read out simultaneously spatial and environmental diversity. It is demonstrated through surveys taken at various seasons and time of the day at the new Caisse de dépôt et de placement headquarters in Montreal which is also the corpus for a SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council) research grant on Environmental Adaptability in Architecture (Potvin et al. 2003-2007). This case study shows that the technique can prove of great relevance for POEs (Post Occupancy Evaluation) as well as for assistance in a new design project.

summary The present research proposes a method to analyse computational tools at the architect's disposal and the potential technical bias they induce in architectural design. Six case studies will be used as a demonstration of the method's ability to highlight those biases and how architects and designers manipulate those tools to translate their architectural expertise into algorithmic design. Those case studies are the six answers to the Seroussi Pavilion competition, organized in 2007 by Natalie Seroussi, a Parisian gallery owner. Having a keen interest into computational design, she invited six architectural practices specializing in this field. As the six case studies answer the same design brief, it represents a particularly suitable opportunity to analyse the intricate relationship between architectural constraints, their translation into computational data and instructions and the programming tools used to do so. Through the analysis of four different aspects of the project - algorithmic tools/method, computational set-up, organizational chart and architectural design - several issues of the computational turn in architecture are discussed.

summary In this paper, the author explains why architects who know how to use scripts have an advantage over the ones who just know how to manipulate a specific software. The reason behind this affirmation is that knowing how to program frees the architect from the rules and language of the interactive software. To prove his point, the author organized two workshops where students at the school of architecture learned to use Rhinoscript. The students didn't create a new interface, but used an existing one. They adapted the program (Rhino) to a design problem they had formulated at the beginning of the workshop. Students could have also used MaxScript (3DS Max) and MelScript (Maya).

summary This paper focuses on the emerging domain of digital free-form design, and attempts to explicate its knowledge content and characteristics through a systematic inquiry of the digital free-form design practice. The massive amount of information associated with the design and construction demands of the complexly shaped buildings demand explicit knowledge about the way various information pieces relate to one another. This paper reports on the process of developing a knowledge framework which serves as a reference model to describe and explain the free-form design and production processes in terms of the interaction of contextual conditions and according to the different ways design problems are perceived and formulated by the members of the design teams. The framework provides guidelines for the development of a web-based design decision support system to support collaborative knowledge construction, sharing and reuse in the domain.

title Electronic Art and Second Order Cybernetic: From Art in Process to Process in Art.

summary The goal of the paper presented below is to discuss partial results of a research which has been financed by the state sponsored agency FAPESP since 2007. Inserted in the research line Design Process, it aims to analyse connections between design process in electronic art and architecture, concerning the creation of mixed media spatialities, as well as present how each field can get the benefits from this analyses. Based on Grounded Theory methodology, a method of qualitative research which aims to understand “reality” from the meanings attributed by people for their experiences, the research has been started collecting data from bibliographical references, interviews with media artists, theoreticians and curators of electronic art and visits to media labs. Interviews and visits of media centers were taken in Europe while the researcher was as an exchange student in the Interface Culture Department in Kunstuniversität Linz, from March to September of 2008. By crossing data collected from the interviews and visits, with the cybernetic social system theory by Niklas Luhmann, and the discussion of an example of mixed media spatiality creation in the art field, this paper analyses how creative processes in digital era depends on different interdisciplinary relationships and how collaborative approaches are needed nowadays in the arts and architectural areas, seeing that artworks are always being influenced by their respective specific “mediality”. The aim of this paper is to discuss the relevance of the use of the cybernetic theory in digital culture, when concepts like participation, interaction and communication are some of the keywords, towards a “collective and distributed authorship”, and their reflects in the contemporary spatiality. The special interest in the comparison of art experience and second order cybernetics as a reference to architecture field is one of the findings of the paper. And, concerning the practical implication, due to cybernetics’ constant questioning of viability, adaptability and recursion, it should be able to point some ways to architects and artists´ works, especially if we consider that they never work in “ideal” conditions.

summary This research concentrates on the combination of remote sensing devices, georeferenced data, web-based optimization techniques and Location Based Services in revitalization. Its aim is to enhance the delivery of information about the development potentialities of existing buildings. The present and idle stock of buildings is extensive. Nonetheless, significant data and information about existing buildings is hardly available. The real estate owners are usually not known by prospective clients and they can be elicited only with substantial effort. But even if data about a building is available it is difficult to valuate it precisely, because of missing standard classification techniques. The question whether or not a building is suitable for a certain subsequent use is therefore hard to answer. It involves an extensive expenditure of time and manpower. Recent publications however, demonstrate that requests for the re-use of buildings can be solved through the use of combinatorial optimization techniques (Loemker 2006a, 2006b, 2007). Within these approaches researchers mainly concentrate on the architect dealing with inquiries from clients. These inquiries typically address the question if specific buildings are suitable for particular future uses. With the aid of optimization engines the architect can solve these requests through a description of the existing buildings and the corresponding enquiries in terms of specific criteria such as number and size of rooms or adjacency between rooms. According to an unambiguous syntax these approaches can be applied to any building type. The building data is stored in databases which can be inquired through optimization engines which thereupon calculate suitable solutions to the demands made by the client. But even if these approaches demonstrate high potential, their bottleneck lies in the exclusive use through the architect. Neither can they be addressed to buildings that are not listed in the architects own inventory listings nor can they be used by the clients themselves. Furthermore, no reliable statement about a prospective reuse of a building can be made directly on site by prospective clients, i.e. buyers or renters. In our research we examined if ad-hoc analyses of existing buildings can be accomplished through the clients themselves with the aid of Location Based Services that can be accessed by common remote sensing devices. The aim is to give prospective clients the possibility to visit a building and run in-situ usability simulations. To accomplish this, building data will be transferred between the building and the client through the use of ordinary communication devices. These devices automatically connect to server-based applications, which compare the requirements of the client with the existing building and run remote simulations on concrete further utilization. The newly generated information will then be passed back to the client’s device. In the paper we address a scenario of a prospective client who visits a city where he hits on an unused building he might be interest in. The client wishes to gain immediate and accurate information if the building is able to meet his demands regarding the space needed for his company. Different techniques investigated, their assets and drawbacks will be described that could accomplish suchlike tasks.

summary A computer-based design critiquing system analyzes a proposed solution and offers critiques (Robbins 1998). Critiques help designers identify problems as well as opportunities to improve their designs. Compared with human critics, today’s computer-based critiquing systems deliver feedback in quite restricted manner. Most systems provide only negative evaluations in text; whereas studio teachers critique by interpreting the student’s design, introducing new ideas, demonstrating and giving examples, and offering evaluations (Bailey 2004; Uluoglu 2000) using speech, writing, and drawing to communicate (Anthony 1991; Schön 1983). This article presents a computer-based critiquing system, Flat-pack Furniture Design Critic (FFDC). This system supports multiple delivery types and modalities, adapting the typical system architecture of constraint-based intelligent tutors (Mitrovic et al. 2007).

The paper introduces current changes in theory and methodology. Following this theoretical introduction, the paper presents an experimental framework for digital design. The novelty of this framework is the way it reflects the need to address both digital design content and digital design skill. A series of experimental designs carried out in an experimental design studio at the faculty of Architecture and T.P at the Technion presents and demonstrates this framework.

summary The aim of this research was to investigate the relationship between the object-oriented paradigm and the design process in architecture. The work was inspired by Mitchell´s (1990) comparison between architectural types and classes of objects. An analogy was set between the development of classes and the structuring of design problems based on architectural typologies. The method was then compared to Alexander´s (1964) in terms of levels of abstraction. Two classes were implemented, illustrating the application of the object-oriented paradigm in architectural design. The method developed is expected to help architects develop a new understanding of the design process.

C’est la forge des clous et du sciage des planches qui naissent de la pente vers la mer et croissance du navire” (Saint-Exupéry, 1948). The paper describes and analyses a course held at Stuttgart University, Germany dealing with the application of parameters in an architectural design process and the transformation of this process into a relational digital model. The course is introduced with special emphasis on its tasks, aims and the implicit didactic concept. It is also investigated if and how a design approach resulting from the identification and determination of parameters can lead to a creation of a unique shape. Finally the impact of the practical exercises for the final design is evaluated. The course’s structure is enhanced by the “Vorklasse” from Bauhaus and the conviction that using software is taught most effectively by working on an own specific project. At the very beginning the students get the chance to gain experiences with parameters through preliminary practical exercises, like folding and modelling and analysing. Then the use of the software is taught in several compact sessions in parallel to the design process. The impact of the early practical exercises on the subsequent design process is remarkable. Special attention is therefore given to this aspect. The aim of the lessons is to produce a proposal for the design task. The proposal is then to be presented as a parametric model representing either the global shape or a constructive detail.

summary Energy consumption in buildings is responsible for about 40% of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions. It is quite feasible that the energy consumption in buildings can be halved, but energy performance analysis must be integral to the entire design process. This imperative has led the authors to propose that architecture, engineering and science should be syncretized in the design process. This syncretization shares some features of the rhizomatic approach introduced by Deleuze and Guattari (2007). In rhizomatic systems all points can be, and should be connected. A rhizome can be considered as a space that develops, not from a point but from milieux. In the expansion of a rhizome, elements of the system do not follow tracings of other elements but they form a map of new vistas. Likewise, a syncretic approach is oblivious to the traditional boundaries between architecture, engineering and science. Syncretization has the potential to enrich the intellectual lives of architects, scientists and engineers, and it would have profoundly beneficial performative benefits.

summary Building Information Modelling (BIM) is an emerging technology in the architecture/engineering/construction industry. This paper presents a case study of the implementation of BIM at the precontract stage of a small scale in-door swimming pool project in Hong Kong. It aims at reviewing the workflow between consultants and the impacts on design visualisation, drawing documentation and bills of quantities. A practicable approach to transform designers’ traditional 2D drawings to BIM with the support from a BIM manager is unveiled. In addition to the results, this paper also highlights some issues such as hardware requirements, the shortfalls of the BIM tool and the supply and demand of skilled BIM personnel. There are other unanswered questions to be addressed in the near future.

summary This research aims at developing a new approach called ‘KISS Modeling’. KISS is generally a rule of ‘Keep It Simple, Stupid’ that will be applied in modeling process investigated and presented by the research. The new approach is implemented in a computer program ‘KISS Modeling’ that generates three dimensional forms based on simplifying the concept of shape recognition in design. The research, however, does not employ totally concepts of shape recognition or shape understanding in Artificial Intelligence and psychology. The research, in summary, investigates and describes: 1) a new approach of computer use contributing to generating design-ideas alternatives of form massing in initial design phases, within a simple way that any designer can understand at single glance, 2) implementation of shape recognition for generative three dimensional forms, 3) function to generate different outputs from different recognition, and 4) case studies introduced through applications and functions of the three dimensional modeling system presented by the research. The research concluded that the introduced processes help the user improve the management of conceptual designing through facilitating a discourse of his/her modeling of design-ideas massing.
