summary The past years have seen significant developments in the area of robotic design interfaces. Building upon visual programming environments, these interfaces now allow the creative industry to de- fine even complex fabrication processes in an easy, accessible way, while providing instant, production-immanent feedback. However, while these software tools greatly speed up the programming of robot- ic arms, many processes are still inherently slow: Subtractive process- es need to remove a large amount of material with comparably small tools, while additive processes are limited by the speed of the extruder and the properties of the extruded material. In this research we present a new method for incrementally shaping transparent polymer materi- als with a robotic arm, without requiring heat or dies for deep- drawing, thus allowing us to rapidly fabricate individual panels within a minimum of time.

summary The main aim of this thesis is the creation of a software package for descriptive geometry. Why there is a need for such a descriptive geometry software? In descriptive geometry the ability of space perception is trained by solving spatial problems graphically with the use of a few constructions: Hence the solution of each problem consists of two parts: 1) 3D-part: After analyzing the spatial problem it is cleared how to proceed step by step in space. 2) 2D-part: Due to the basic rules of descriptive geometry for each step of the solving strategy the corresponding 2D-construction has to be carried out graphically. By use of CAD-DG the 2nd part can be replaced again by a 3D-part: Each step is solved using the basic routines offered in the menu. That means that each step is solved analytically but instead of any output of numbers the solution is immediately displayed in the main views on the screen. Therefore the user neither needs to apply formulas of analytic geometry nor has to take care of any coordinates. He still works directly with geometric objects in a graphic representation

summary Tacit knowledge is paradoxical: something we know yet don't know we know, knowledge we sense but can't articulate. In Polanyi’s definition of tacit knowledge, “we know more than we can say" (1966/2009; Scott, 1985; Gelwick, 1977). It's important to see that tacit knowledge is part of a sequence; mental structures, in awareness when first learned, eventually become tacit, operating thenceforth as unquestioned assumptions. These tacit structures pose a problem for professional education in disciplines that encourage creativity. This paper examines the design and re-design of an interdisciplinary course intended to help make these tacit structures visible, to trigger frame awareness.

title Evolving the Shape of Things to Come - A Comparison of Interactive Evolution and Direct Manipulation for Creative Tasks

summary This paper is concerned with differences between direct manipulation and interactive evolutionary design as two fundamentally different interaction styles for creative tasks. Its main contribution to the field of generative design is the treatment of interactive evolutionary design as a general interaction style that can be used to support users in creative tasks. Direct manipulation interfaces, a term coined by Ben Shneiderman in the mid-seventies, are the kind of interface that is characteristic of most modern personal computer application user interfaces. Typically, direct manipulation interfaces incorporate a model of a context (such as a desktop environment) supposedly familiar to users. Rather than giving textual commands (i.e. "remove file.txt", "copy file1.txt file2.txt") to an imagined intermediary between the user and the computer, the user acts directly on the objects of interest to complete a task. Undoubtedly, direct manipulation has played an important role in making computers accessible to non-computer experts. Less certain are the reasons why direct manipulation interfaces are so successful. It has been suggested that this kind of interaction style caters for a sense of directness, control and engagement in the interaction with the computer. Also, the possibilities of incremental action with continuous feedback are believed to be an important factor of the attractiveness of direct manipulation. However, direct manipulation is also associated with a number of problems that make it a less than ideal interaction style in some situations. Recently, new interaction paradigms have emerged that address the shortcomings of direct manipulation in various ways. One example is so-called software agents that, quite the contrary to direct manipulation, act on behalf of the user and alleviate the user from some of the attention and cognitive load traditionally involved in the interaction with large quantities of information. However, this relief comes at the cost of lost user control and requires the user to put trust into a pseudo-autonomous piece of software. Another emerging style of human-computer interaction of special interest for creative tasks is that of interactive evolutionary design (sometimes referred to as aesthetic selection). Interactive evolutionary design is inspired by notions from biological evolution and may be described as a way of exploring a large – potentially infinite – space of possible design configurations based on the judgement of the user. Rather than, as is the case with direct manipulation, directly influencing the features of an object, the user influences the design by means of expressing her judgement of design examples. Variations of interactive evolutionary design have been employed to support design and creation of a variety of objects. Examples of such objects include artistic images, web advertising banners and facial expressions. In order to make an empirical investigation possible, two functional prototypes have been designed and implemented. Both prototypes are targeted at typeface design. The first prototype allows a user to directly manipulate a set of predefined attributes that govern the design of a typeface. The second prototype allows a user to iteratively influence the design of a typeface by means of expressing her judgement of typeface examples. Initially, these examples are randomly generated but will, during the course of interaction, converge upon design configurations that reflect the user’s expressed subjective judgement. In the evaluation of the prototypes, I am specifically interested in users’ sense of control, convergence and surprise. Is it possible to maintain a sense of control and convergence without sacrificing the possibilities of the unexpected in a design process? The empirical findings seem to suggest that direct manipulation caters for a high degree of control and convergence, but with a small amount of surprise and sense of novelty. The interactive evolutionary design prototype supported a lower degree of experienced control, but seems to provide both a sense of surprise and convergence. One plausible interpretation of this is that, on the one hand, direct manipulation is a good interaction style for realizing the user’s intentions. On the other hand, interactive evolutionary design has a potential to actually change the user’s intentions and pre-conceptions of that which is being designed and, in doing so, adds an important factor to the creative process. Based on the empirical findings, the paper discusses situations when interactive evolutionary design may be a serious contender with direct manipulation as the principal interaction style and also how a combination of both styles can be applied.

summary Machine learning enables computers to learn without being explicitly programmed. This paper outlines state-of-the-art implementations of machine learning approaches to the study of physical material properties based on Elastomer we developed, which combines with robotic automation and image recognition to generate a computable material model for non-uniform linear Elastomer material. The development of the neural network includes a few preliminary experiments to confirm the feasibility and the influential parameters used to define the final RNN neural network, the study of the inputs and the quality of the testing samples influencing the accuracy of the output model, and the evaluation of the generated material model as well as the method itself. To conclude, this paper expands such methods to the possible architectural implications on other non-uniform materials, such as the performance of wood sheets with different grains and tensile material made from composite materials.

summary In the following research, a systematic approach is developed to generate an experiment-based performance model that computes and customizes properties of non-uniform linear materials to accommodate the form of designated curve under bending and natural force. In this case, the test subject is an elastomer strip of non-uniform sections. A novel solution is provided to obtain sufficient training data required for deep learning with an automatic material testing mechanism combining robotic arm automation and image recognition. The collected training data are fed into a deep combination of neural networks to generate a material performance model. Unlike most traditional performance models that are only able to simulate the final form from the properties and initial conditions of the given materials, the trained neural network offers a two-way performance model that is also able to compute appropriate material properties of non-uniform materials from target curves. This network achieves complex forms with minimal and effective programmed materials with complicated nonlinear properties and behaving under natural forces.

summary Hong Kong's rapid urbanization and expansion have resulted in a high incidence of new urban construction projects as well as building renovation and restoration activities. The above architectural activities in the city are characterized by inconsistency in design styles and inconsistency with the neighborhood environment. The proposal of a self-weakening design style of different designers in the same neighborhood should be taken as a practical consideration at the early stage of design. In this research, a dataset of old building facades in Hong Kong is provided, and the method of training a deep convolutional neural network is used to realize the coupling of Pix2Pix GAN algorithm to the whole or local design generation of building facade in Hong Kong. Moreover, a trained network based on the architectural styles of Hong Kong is provided with 160 sets of collected original image datasets of Hong Kong building facades for organizing pre-calibration. It classifies the elemental information of complex building facades for later training of the network and automatic generation to give new construction and renovation schemes a replicable technical route.

summary As a traditional building material, clay has been used by humans for a long time. From early civilisations, to the modern dependence on new technologies, the craft of clay making is commonly linked with the use of moulds, handmade creations, ceramic extruders, etc. (Schmandt and Besserat, 1977). Clay in the form of bricks is one of the oldest building materials known (Fernandes et al, 2010). This research expands the possibilities offered by standardised bricks by testing types of clay, forms, shapes, porosity, and structural methods. The traditional way of working with clay relies on human craftsmanship and is based on the use of semi-solid clay (Fernandes et al., 2010). However, there is little research on the use of clay slurry. With the rise of 3D printing systems in recent years, research and development has been emerging on using clay as a 3D printing filament (Gürsoy, 2018). Researchers have discovered that in order for 3D-printed clay slurry to solidify quickly to support the weight of the added layers during printing, curing agents such as lime, coal ash, cement, etc. have to be added to the clay slurry. After adding these substances, clay is difficult to be reused and can have a negative effect on the environment (Chen et al., 2021). In this study, a unique method for manufacturing clay elements of intricate geometries is proposed with the help of an internal skeleton that can be continuously reused. The study introduces the process of applying clay on a special structure through spraying and showcases how this method creates various opportunities for customisation of production.

summary Based on the parametric simulation platform and tools, the paper studied the influence of building orientation, building size and window-to-wall ratio on heating and cooling energy consumption of the typical university library in the severe cold region of China. The study established the multiple linear regression models of form design parameters and heating and cooling energy consumption respectively, determined the weight of each parameter, proposed the optimal energy-saving orientation selection and form parameter groups. The energy-saving design strategies of the typical university library in the severe cold region were put forward from the three sub-aspects of building orientation, building size and window-to-wall ratio, and from a comprehensive point of view. The study provides effective support for energy consumption estimation in the stage of building form design, and has important practical significance for sustainable development of university buildings.

summary The increasing urbanization process has led to greater thermal stress on pedestrians, and greenery arrangement can provide an effective mitigation strategy. However, evaluating the environmental impact of different urban morphologies and greenery arrangements using traditional methods requires time-consuming simulations. To address this challenge, we utilized a deep generative model to predict outdoor environmental indicators influenced by greenery and urban morphology. By creating a dataset of Universal Thermal Climate Index, wind speed, temperature, mean radiant temperature, and relative humidity from Envi-met simulations of three building morphologies with randomly distributed greenery arrangements, we found that Building Shadow Exposure (BSE) and Frontal Area Index, as well as BSE and Porosity, had strong interactions. Our study demonstrates that a pix2pix model trained on this dataset can accurately predict the outdoor environment in seconds (R2 > 0.80), making it a promising tool for sustainable urban planning. Thus, our research suggests that deep generative models can accelerate simulation processes and enable more comprehensive studies to support sustainable urban planning in the future.

summary Spatio-temporal data are presented and explored by VR-based visualization systems which offer 3D-navigation and time-navigation for better immersion and analysis. If the visualization results are disseminated on the WWW, they are mostly transformed into videos or, recently, into animated VRML-files which neither support 3D-navigation nor time navigation nor a time-referenced data representation. In this paper, the script language VRML History is proposed which supports the description of spatio-temporal worlds on the internet by conceptually extending VRML with a new time dimension. This is realized by a set of new nodes representing temporal geometries and time references, and a set of Java-classes extending standard VRML-browsers to perform time navigation.

summary This presentation argues that the concepts of “tools” and “material”, in relation to it use in contemporary architectural design education, can be understood as “instruments” within design processes. The difference between them relies on, its design knowledge abstraction levels, and its mechanisms to capture, manipulate and produce design knowledge. In addition, an initial exploration of Distributed Cognition concept, in order to redefine the use of instruments in design process as Cognitive Instruments, is presented. Furthermore, a more comprehensive framework for design knowledge is presented, including a specific examination of design instruments an its role indesign processes. In the conclusions possible effects derived from the use of “instruments” in design processes are explored.

summary This research explores new ways to integrate manufacturing knowledge in to design phases. Through the use of design for manufacturing (DfM) concept, and looking at relations between its potential application in component design and its implementation using digital manufacturing technologies, the author implemented a DfM model that varies from previous models by incorporated learning in the process. This process was based on; a knowledge systematization process; and the incremental development and refinement of design heuristics and metrics. Subsequently the attempt on this research is twofold. One is to realize a process to capture and organize manufacturing knowledge, and second to organize that knowledge and make it available as a DfM model for component design using specific CNC technology.

summary Several building works have demonstrated the possibilities of architectural design based on structural performance. This work discusses some examples and digital design strategies that approach this issue, as well as an exercise for a tower generated through topological optimization. That experience presents alternatives for a traditional office tower in Santiago, Chile, the Torre Santa Maria, based on generative design strategies for the incorporation of structural and environmental requirements to define parametric models. The experience and the capabilities studied reveal an intensive variation of architectural shape. This approach challenges conventional building regularity and suggests new ways of designing based on material performance.

summary There exists a long time debate over the rational state of the evacuees in the evacuation simulation. Sime et al. insisted that the evacuees behave rationally in most cases. Following this argument Arthur and Passini concluded that if a setting works well under normal conditions, it will have a better chance of working well in emergency conditions. Such an argument for rational decision-making makes statistical models, such as Utility Maximizing Model (UMM), acting as proper framework for choice modelling in evacuation. However, on the other side, some people pointed out that there exists panic in the evacuation and bounded rationality theory, represented by pruned Decision Tree Model (DTM), should be adapted in choice modelling instead. Such a debate over stress effect causes hesitations and uncertainties when researchers try to select a proper model framework for their practical simulation. This study compared the performances (prediction accuracies) of the UMM and DTM with the same set of choice data collected in a virtual evacuation experiment. With a similar level of performance on both sides, it is suggested that the on-going debate does NOT bring any difference to the choice modelling in practical evacuation simulation. It is time to improve the performance rather than to continue the debate.

summary The biocolonisation of urban building surfaces by mosses is a ubiquitous and naturally occurring phenomenon that encapsulates immense ecological value for both current and future challenges of life in cities. The miniature ecosystems facilitated by mosses capture atmospheric pollutants and maintain local biodiversity by providing shelter and nutrients for a highly diverse set of organisms across all kingdoms of life. Early establishment and growth of bryophyte communities appear to be influenced by a dynamic mix of biotic and abiotic factors, while environmental cues modulate physiological responses and biochemical exchanges. A prototype monitoring device was designed to measure carbon dioxide uptake under variable light, humidity, and temperature conditions during a 3-week experiment. By providing a non-destructive tool for understanding and visualising the impact of environmental variables on photosynthetic behaviour, the device contributes to a biocentric design practice, where an organism’s ecological needs begin to drive the development of bioreceptive micro-environments.

summary One of the most important natural resources for the urban sustainability is water. For this reason, the incorporation of appropriate strategies to manage water resources from buildings and urban planning is necessary. In this work a series of parametric criteria are defined, with which by using design software it proposed generating optimal forms in certain scenarios for high hydric performance in urban residential complexes. The examples developed demonstrates strong influences of dwelling density by the construction block and permeable outdoor surfaces, as well as local infrastructure for water recovering.

summary This research focuses on an approach to describe principles in non-destructive floor space relocation within the domain of revitalization. With the aid of mathematical rules, which are executed by the use of a computer, solutions to floor space relocation problems are generated. Provided that “design” is in principle a combinatorial problem, i.e., a constraint-based search for an overall optimal solution, an exemplary method is described to solve such problems.

summary We present a synergetic combination of two previously separate process technologies to create novel lightweight structures. 3D textiles and 3D printing. We will outline the development of a novel material system that consisted of flexible and foldable 3D textiles that are combined with stiff, linear 3D printed materials. Our aim is to produce material-reduced lightweight elements for building applications with an extended functionality and recyclability. Within an ongoing research project (6dTEX), we explore a mono-material system, which uses the same base materials for both the filament for 3D printing and the yarn of the fabrication of the 3D textiles. Based on preliminary 3D printing tests on flat textiles key process parameters were identified. Expertise has been established for 3D printing on textiles as well as for using printable recycled polyester materials (PES textile and PETG filament. Lastly for 3D printing on non-combustible material (alkali-resistant (AR) glass textiles and for 3D concrete printing (3DCP). The described process- knowledge facilitates textile architectures with an extended vocabulary, ranging from flat to single curved and folded topologies. Whereas the foundations are laid in the research project on a meso scale, we also extended our explorations into an architectural macro scale. For this, we used a more speculative design-build studio that was based on a more loose combination of 3D textiles and 3D printed elements. Lastly, we will discuss, how this first architectural application beneficially informed the research project.

title DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EXPERT AND NOVICE DESIGNERS: AN EXPERIMENTAL STUD

summary This chapter investigates the differences in performance between an expert and a novice in terms of their respective strategic knowledge. We examined conceptual design protocols of an expert and a novice, and found that the expert’s cognitive activity and productivity in the design process were almost three times as high as the novice's. The possible reason for this is the difference in their strategic knowledge. The expert’s cognitive processing is structured such that it stays within the limits of human short term memory. This provides empirical evidence for a different strategic knowledge that may be developed with experience. The expert's strategic knowledge allows him to use a smaller number of processes and to form different groupings of processes.
