title Solid Texturing of Complex Surfaces

summary Texturing is an effective method of simulating surface detail at relatively low cost. Traditionally, texture functions have been defined on the two-dimensional surface coordinate systems of individual surface patches. This paper introduces the notion of 'solid texturing.' Solid texturing uses texture functions defined throughout a region of three-dimensional space. Many nonhomogeneous materials, including wood and stone, may be more realistically rendered using solid texture functions. In addition, solid texturing can easily be applied to complex surfaces which are difficult to texture using two- dimensional texture functions. The paper gives examples of solid texture functions based on Fourier synthesis, stochastic texture models, projections of two-dimensional textures, and combinations of other solid textures

summary The Creative Synthesis task devised by Finke and Slayton(1988) has been widely used as an experimental measure of mentalsynthesis, but previous studies have often failed to demonstrate anysignificant benefits of external support on participants’ performance.This paper discusses a study that examined novice and expert drawers’performance of synthesis using a modified stimuli set that was designedto increase the load on visuo-spatial working memory. The resultsshowed a significant increase in Transformational Complexity(Anderson & Hesltrup, 1993) of patterns produced by the expert groupwhile using sketching. It is argued that experts are more effective atusing sketching interactively to increase complexity, while novices relymore on using it as a simple memory aid.

summary City scale projects are complex multivariable problems and have previously been addressed using a variety of organisational principles, whether it be the infrastructural grid, used by Ludwig Hilbersheimer in his project “Hochhausstadt” or the spinal organisation of the Tokyo Masterplan done by Kenzo Tange and the Metabolist Movement. This project strays from traditional methods of structuring a city and investigates a novel self-engineered anticipatory model, which focuses on the use of generative and genetic algorithms to develop a new associative system to develop coastal cities in arid climates. The system functions as a negative feedback loop, analysing existing conditions, and by a series of mathematical functions, projecting the new growth patterns for major components of a city, such as building envelopes, road networks, canal networks and public space distribution as a result of the cities internally generated resources.

summary This paper coincides with the conference theme that people have gradually become a vital force influencing the environmental system. In the future, it is necessary to study the influence of not only the built environment on people but also people's feedback on environmental design. This study explores the ‎processes of interactive design using both emotion recognition and eye-tracking of users. By putting on wearable devices to roam and perceive in a virtual reality space, the physiological data of the users are collected in real-time and used to analyze their emotional responses and visual attention to the spaces. This method will provide an auxiliary way for non-architectural professional users to participate in architectural space design. At present, there is a lack of research on the comprehensive application of eye movement knowledge and emotional feedback in architectural space design. This integration will help professional designers to optimize the design of architectural space. For this paper, we review existing research and proposing an interactive design workflow that integrates eye tracking and emotion recognition. This workflow will help with the next stage of research to understand the design of a new International School of Design building.

summary This paper demonstrates the production of endogenous solutions for global development when applying local workforce skills in the design-manufacturing process using available computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) tools. The methodology outlined in this paper improves technology uptake in developing countries by promoting localisation of the design-manufacture process coupled with local knowledge to promote culturally sustainable technology dissemination. This paper documents a set of design rules and manufacturing methods used to create precision moulds with locally available CAD/CAM tools. The moulds shown here were used by local craftsmen in the casting and construction of a prototypical precast architectural system deployed in the urban slums around Nairobi, Kenya.

summary A knowledge based computer-aided architectural design system (KB-CAAD) for the schematic design and evaluation of passive solar buildings is presented. The presented tool is based on the integration of knowledge based and procedural simulation methods with any available CAAD system for building representation. The knowledge base contains the heuristic rules for the design of passive solar buildings. Whenever possible, the knowledge base guides the designer through the decision making process. However, if 'rules of thumb' are not acceptable for the particular design problem, the KB-CAAD tool guides the architect towards the optimal solution, by using a procedural simulation model. It is demonstrated, through a case study, that the proposed knowledge based design system not only leads to the design of better solar buildings, but that it takes less time and man-power to introduce the geometrical data that would be needed for a regular non-solar building representation

title Generating Alternatives For Siting Using Genetic Algorithms and Multiple Criteria Decision Techniques

summary It is believed that a fundamental step in the structuring of a siting problem is generating alternati-ves. This task should occur at the beginning of a process for facility location, giving a preliminary insight into the feasibility of the project in the area of concern by identifying a manageable number of feasible alternatives for careful review and consideration. The purpose of this paper is to present a methodology aimed at generating alternatives for siting of facilities taking into account a number of criteria. These criteria comprise environmental, economical and the action's inherent technical aspects. The search is carried out by applying genetic algorithms (GA's) which are natural phenomena based algorithms for optimization and random search procedures. According to the GA's terminology, a fitness function measures the worth of each candidate alternative codified into a chromosome. It was thought that the merging of aspects of multiple criteria theory and genetic algorithms is essential for the problem of generating alternatives in location problems. The aim of this integration is the improvement of the theoretical principles upon which the fitness function is based, leading to the construction of a robust set of alternatives. The paper describes the integration of both multiple criteria theory and GA's and discusses the results.

summary Documentation errors have been identified as a significant problem within the construction and engineering industry. Errors contained with contract documents can contribute to loss of profit, reduced productivity, and cost and time overruns as well as contractual disputes. Research has identified that as much as 60% of variations in construction and engineering projects are a result of errors and omissions contained within poor quality documentation. Using a case study, errors, omissions and information redundancy contained in the Electrical and Instrumentation (E&I) 'As built' drawings for a Stacker Conveyor is examined. A total of 449 errors and omissions were identified within 42 documents. In addition, 231 cables and components appeared once among the 42 documents; 86 cables and components appeared twice and 12 cables and components appeared three times. As a result of the errors, omissions and redundancy, requests for information (RFIs) are required. Retrospective analysis indicates that the indirect cost of raising the RFIs to the contractor was estimated to be 8.93% of the cost of the E&I contract. To address the problems of errors, omissions and redundancy, it is suggested that there is a need to adopt an object orientated system information model (SIM) for E&I engineering design and documentation. It is demonstrated in the case study that the use of a SIM could bring significant improvements in productivity and reduce the cost of engineering design.

summary There is a need for architectural design tools that enable designers to understand how spaces sound. This project aims to develop a method by which architects can gain experiential acoustic feedback on existing and proposed projects through the use of ambisonic spatial auralization. This research proposes that the creation of a fully three-dimensional soundfield can be a tool for architectural acoustic design. The use of ambisonics has largely been limited to virtual reality applications; however, with the growing support in a variety of popular software, opportunities for using spatial audio as a design tool are beginning to make themselves apparent. This paper reports on an experimental setup for a 12-channel, speaker-based auralization system that plays recorded and simulated ambisonic tracks. Novel uses for this setup are proposed.

title Simulation by Design: A Parametric Design Tool for Zero Energy Buildings

summary To address the shortcomings of integrating building simulation in architectural design and to make it more appealing to students, a simple interface to Energyplus was created. This interface models a simple rectangular building that is passively heated by direct gain and cooled by ventilation. A simple photovoltaic interface has also been added to supply fan energy. This tool has an OpenGL modeler for visualization and uses Energyplus for calculations. The interface will run a full year simulation and graph the results. The results are reported in a yearly graph that shows the outdoor and indoor temperature. The indoor temperature range is based on adaptive comfort level. The interface was tested and used in an introductory design studio in order to comply with the 2010 imperative. The students simulated a simple box and changed the buildings parameters until the building fell within the adaptive comfort zone for most of the year. The climate simulated was Chicago, IL. Using these parameters the students then designed the building. The resulting designs show that even though the students were restricted in parameters, such as window percentage, they were still able to creatively design unique buildings that use zero to negative net energy for heating and cooling in a climate such as Chicago.

This process tends to produce a vast amount of designs of varying quality and requires design space exploration (DSE) to review the myriad of designs so that an optimal candidate for design development can be chosen. This paper will explore different applied workflows for using optimization in an urban design competition, which seek to overcome the limitations of using optimization and DSE with a time constraint.

summary This paper proposes a self-assembling system for architectural application. It is a reaction to current building crisis and high energy consumption by building industry. This Unique system is based on a reconfiguration of passive elements by low-cost soft robots able to move inside as well as configure them into 2D/3D structures similar to recent Modular robots. A goal is to significantly reduce the high price and complexity of state of the art modular robots by minimization of mechatronic parts and using soft materials. The concept focuses on life-cycle management when one system can achieve assembly, reconfiguration, and disassembly with a minimum of waste. The paper compares three different versions of a self-assembly system called MoleMOD: MoleCUBE, MoleCHAIN, and MoleSTRING.

summary This paper examines the development of a prototype suite of on-line integrated multimedia-GIS tools to assist in bottom up decision-making. These tools are being developed in the context of scenario planning to enable the community to actively explore different land use options and the implication of government structure and strategic plans. A case study approach is undertaken, focusing on the Jewell Station Neighbourhood, situated in the City of Moreland, Greater Melbourne Region, Australia. The paper documents the first stage of the project, in developing three land use scenarios delivered through a range of technologies including: VRML, HTML, GIS, Pixmaker and Flash. The paper concludes by outlining the future directions of this research that include: the construction of a virtual sandbox, usability testing, and community consultation.

title A new facility for testing accurate positioning systems for road construction robotics

summary The first part of the paper gives a definition of positioning in the context of road work sites and stresses the advantages offered by the new generation of positioning systems. A logical classification of these systems is also proposed. The `global positioning system' (GPS) technique, as one of the most promising techniques, is detailed. The main point of the paper is the presentation of a new test facility for positioning systems which has been set up at the `Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées' (Central Laboratory of Roads and Bridges). First, its principle is described, based on the re-construction of a 6D reference trajectory to which the measurements of the system in test are compared. Then, the operation of the facility and the post-treatment software which has been specially developed for it are described. Finally, the results of some recent studies are given, results which would have been hard to obtain without using the SESSYL facility. During the first study, the facility was used to establish an accurate time-model of the vertical error and this model allowed us to propose an innovative method for improving the vertical accuracy. During the second study, SESSYL proved its capability of differentiating several state-of-the-art GPS receivers of the same category.

summary Generative design system develops the purpose that is can generate a large number of design plans. Generative design system can let designer unceasingly explore the new design plans. At present generative design system, they all only have one kind of generative mechanism. Therefore, one can’t provide enough feasibility for designer to explore new plans. So, in this paper, we propose a Co-Generative Form System (COgenForm). COgenForm is a 3D form exploration system that invokes two set of generative mechanisms. This system used co-evolutional characteristics to build the steps and framework of co-generative design process. This system includes two groups of generative mechanisms and these will evolve with each other. Using this system, the form exploration and generation process can be more dynamic and more alternatives.

summary A method is developed for the efficient representation of spherical caps by using the rational Bezier scheme of Computer Aided Design. The technique is applied to describe special spherical patches such as the hemi-sphere, an octant of a sphere and the whole sphere. A geometric interpretation of quadratic curves and quadric patches is used in order to obtain an insight into the geometry inherent in the rational Bezier scheme and so to make easier the selection of the spherical patch out of the quadric primitives
