title Studying Architectural Massing Strategies in Co-design - Mobile Augmented Reality Tool versus 3D Virtual World
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2017.2.703
source Fioravanti, A, Cursi, S, Elahmar, S, Gargaro, S, Loffreda, G, Novembri, G, Trento, A (eds.), ShoCK! - Sharing Computational Knowledge! - Proceedings of the 35th eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, Sapienza University of Rome, Rome, Italy, 20-22 September 2017, pp. 703-710
summary Researchers attempt to offer new design tools and technologies to support design process facilitating alternative visualization and representation techniques. This paper describes a comparison study that took place in the Department of Architecture, at the Istanbul Technical University between 2016-2017. We compare when architects designed mass volumes of buildings in an marker-based mobile Augmented Reality (AR) application with that of when they used a collaborative 3D Virtual World. The massing strategy in the AR environment was an additive approach that is to collaboratively design the small parts to make the whole. Alignment and arrangement of the parts were not the main concerns of the designers in AR, instead the functional development of the design proposal, bodily engagements with the design representation, framing and re-framing of the given context and parameters become the discussion topics.

summary Today we portray designs with analytical systems and systems with the emerging terminology of computational design. Generative, intelligent, digital, parametric, associative, biomimetic designs sound valuable, whereas the integrity remains questionable. The tool, enabling designer to play with forms, patterns, models is neither granting him the knowledge nor teaching him the appropriate technique. Are we really able to digest and master all the information we’re subject to, to be used in our designs? Or do we have much to learn about the investigations of the renaissance men to reach to a level of proficiency?

title Analogical Multiplicity in Bio-Inspired Design Process
source Gomez, P and Braida, F (eds.), Designing Possibilities - Proceedings of the XXV International Conference of the Ibero-American Society of Digital Graphics (SIGraDi 2021), Online, 8 - 12 November 2021, pp. 1309–1320
summary This study explores the integration of biomimicry into design processes by providing a closer look at architectural practice and research and proposes a categorization of bio-inspired paradigms. Noticeable clusters within biomimetic approaches in architecture that share common principles are investigated throughout the research via a series of built examples that are considered to have biological phenomena as inspiration sources. Bio-inspired design processes are investigated via a categorization to detect the depth of analogical transfer and multiplicity. The paper sets out to present the issues concerning the analogical distance, multiplicity of approaches, and the decrease in the gap between nature and human-made phenomena.

summary Today, right along with the products marketed and manufactured by the mass production techniques, continuously developing computing and technology have an undeniable impact on customized design, in which the users have a say on the products design and manufacturing. Mass customization is slowly settling down in architectural design concepts as well, like housing which is one of the best areas where users can reflect their living habits and preferences. In this study, user centric mass customization based model is developed, which creates housing floor plan combining the user-supplied data with the best possible creations generated by the genetic algorithms.

summary This paper presents considerations and refl ections based on experiments conducted in the course of cultural activities within the Hybrids Territories Project for Public Policies, fi nanced by FAPESP and in force at Nomads.usp since March 2011. Starting from previous experiences using classical methods of qualitative research, such as semi-structured interviews and questionnaires, other ways of approaching and understanding the complexity of urban and social realities were sought. The reflections here presented were formed from the trial of methodological procedures, derived from other fields of knowledge and practices already recurrent in some communities. The aim is to verify the limits and potentialities of previously tested procedures and instruments, structured through digital media, to understand the diversity of ways of living in social housing estates with housing units similar to each other and located in the outskirts of two different cities.

title Vision: A Computational Investigation into the Human Representation and Processing of Visual Information
source New York, NY: W.H. Freeman and Company
summary Marr's demonstrations that retinal receptive field geometry could be derived by Fourier transformation of spatial frequency sensitivity data, that edges and contours could be detected by finding zero crossings in the light gradient by taking the Laplacian or second directional derivative, that excitatory and inhibitory receptive fields could be constructed from "DOG" functions (the difference of two Gaussians), and that the visual system used a two-dimensional convolution integral with a Gaussian prefilter as an operator for bandwidth optimation on the retinal light distribution, were more powerful than anything that had been seen up to that time. It was as if vision research suddenly acquired its own Principia Mathematica, or perhaps General Relativity Theory, in terms of the new explanatory power Marr's theories provided. Truly an extraordinary book from an extraordinary thinker in the area of perception, vision, and the brain.

summary This study argues that analysis of written content might be helpful to provide clues at a certain extent on the future directions of current research areas and the emergence of new study areas. In the scope of the study, the International Journal of Architectural Computing (IJAC) which has been a scientific platform covering many pioneer publications on education research in computer-aided architectural design (CAAD) field was selected as source content. Although the size of the source domain is limited, the analysis of abstracts and titles of 439 articles published in IJAC between 2003 and 2018 revealed promising results which can be examined under four characteristics: "constant", "emerging", "fading" and "solidifying" concepts. The tokens in the analysis process are words, phrases, topic nodes and links between topic nodes. The outcomes of this study might contribute to tracking the evolution of concepts their emergence or disusage in different time and contexts, and interrelations between different concepts.

title Investigating the role of Entropy in Design Evaluation Process: A Case Study on Municipality Buildings
source Gülen Çagdas, Mine Özkar, Leman F. Gül and Ethem Gürer (Eds.) Future Trajectories of Computation in Design [17th International Conference, CAAD Futures 2017, Proceedings / ISBN 978-975-561-482-3] Istanbul, Turkey, July 12-14, 2017, pp. 211-224.
summary The concept of entropy, which can be used to measure physical disorder, has been rediscovered by Shannon to measure the irregularity in information. Entropy measurements are made by considering one or more factors. Specific features such as color, shape, element type, height, material related with architectural compositions can be considered as factors and the amount of information carried by the building depending on one or more of these factors can be measured. In this study, it is questioned whether there is a relationship between entropy values of municipal building competition projects, which are measured in relation to the factors, and the building is considered successful by the competition jury. In order to conduct this examination, the entropy values of the projects, which respected to the same architectural program and won various awards in the project competitions were calculated. Before making comparisons, measurements were made according to solid-void ratios on the plan layout, the shapes of closed and discrete spaces, and the distribution of functions. A discussion was made on the usability of entropy method in the design phase, which gave solid and precise results according to the results of the comparisons.

summary Paradigmatic components take the form of a sensitive mesh that reacts to all things experienced. The symbolic universe expresses techno-scientific progress through a linguistic renovation of art. Art not only expresses but also gestates the world. Today, in order for art to generate and give birth to shapes, words and images that match the modern notion of the time factor, in order for art to be able to take part in the generation of new knowledge by means of a new, specific language and say the things that want to be said, art needs digital language. Although at an initial stage, digital art has the privilege of participating in the genesis of profound changes in the current paradigm. This process is ratified in .El milagro secreto. by Borges and .The reflecting Pool. by Viola.

title The Role of CAD In Creative Architectural Sketching
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.1997.x.o2b
source Challenges of the Future [15th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9523687-3-0] Vienna (Austria) 17-20 September 1997
summary The history of computers in architectural design is very short; only a few decades; when compared to the development of methods in practical design (Gero 1983). However, the development of the user interfaces has been very fast. According to the practical observations of over one hundred architects, user interfaces are at present inflexible in sketching, although computers can make drafts and the creation of alternatives quicker and more effective in the final stages of designing (Haapasalo 1997). Based on our research in the field of practical design we would wish to stimulate a wider debate about the theory of design. More profound perusal compels us to examine human modes, pre-eminently different levels of thinking and manners of inference. What is the meaning of subconscious and conscious thinking in design? What is the role of intuition in practical design? Do the computer aided design programs apply to creative architectural sketching? To answer such questions, distinct, profound and broad understanding from different disciplines is required. Even then, in spite of such specialist knowledge we cannot hope to unambiguously and definitively answer such questions.

title SPECIAL ISSUE ON „DIGITAL MEDIA LIBRARIES“
source ITcon Vol. 9 (2004), pp. 97-174
summary There are numerous commercial digital asset management systems, but most of them are relatively expensive and meant for in-house management. In the meanwhile alternative solutions have been developed for searchable interactive repositories of media for professional use, education and research.

Web-based digital libraries and indexes of literature have been available on the internet for a few years now. In many cases a focus on specified areas is given and published information is disseminated in this way. However, researchers, educators and practitioners in architecture and civil engineering also depend on various sources of information that are stored and delivered in a multitude of media formats. Some of that information is case-based and built incrementally from previous experiences.

summary In the paper-based world, CAAD-associations, such as SIGRADI, and scientific publishers aim at getting the right people together and for making sure their work gets distributed to their peers. Electronic networks, such as the Internet, are providing scientists with the means to pursue those activities on their own. In this paper we present the goals of an EU project called SciX (Scientific information eXchange). The goal of is this project is to analyze the business processes of scientific publishing, to invent new publication models and through a series of pilots to demonstrate how this should work. In the envisioned scenarios, professional associations such as SIGRADI play an important role.

summary Collaborative Teamwork is regarded to be one of the most outstanding fields of teaching and research within the context of Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning. This focal field is closely related to the research field of "Remote Teamwork", i.e. the substance-related cooperation of people over spatial distances in decision-situations aiming at the elaboration of suited remote-working structures for research, project transactions and teaching. The generation and manipulation of digital spatial models and their virtual transportation within large spatial distances represent the main research objectives. The Faculty of Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning therefore is stressing information technologies within academic context. The following contribution is dedicated to the description of two teaching projects, namely „BraGraLuWi" (collaborative teamwork between the universities of Technology Bratislava, Graz, Luton and Vienna) and carrying-out a VRML-workshop, furthermore to the development of Remote Teamwork-structures preferably on the basis of „ATM" (a technology of broad band telecommunications) at Vienna University of Technology.

doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2003.183
source CAADRIA 2003 [Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / ISBN 974-9584-13-9] Bangkok Thailand 18-20 October 2003, pp. 183-198
summary The image is the support of ideas search in the whole design phase. The definition of assistance tools, by using the image, seems to be applicable whatever the stage of the process of architectural design is. This article presents three approaches, which intend to study the contribution of the image inside of the architectural design process. The first approach rests on the idea that architects use external references as generating elements of new project ideas and that it is possible to organize this referential knowledge by taking the image as structuring entity of this knowledge. The two other approaches intend to use image to support the formulation of information designer's needs in more advanced phases of the design process. The identified needs are those of the architect who searches a particular information in order to justify or to perform some choices, during the act of conception.

title User Adaptive Visualization of Cooperative Architectural Design
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 2 - no. 1
summary A cooperative design is a social activity inside a group. In this kind of activity, each actor plays a specific role. If each actor wants to realize the actions corresponding to his role, he needs some adaptive information about the cooperation context. The cooperation context of design project is a relational organization where each actor maintains specific relations with other people (designers, project managers, etc.) but also with documents and activities. Such a cooperation context exists in architectural cooperative design which is distinguished by a "mutual prescription" between actors. In architectural design we are in a network model of actors, instead of the hierarchical model that we can find in classical workflow tools. This organization has to be represented in the project management tool to give each user an adaptive vision of the project organization and evolution. The representation and the visualization of such a network, which characterizes each project, is the main objective of the "Relational Model of Cooperation" and the hypermedia view presented in this paper.

title CUMINCAD.ES: A First Step Towards Multilingual Digital Libraries in CAAD
source SIGraDi 2003 - [Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Rosario Argentina 5-7 november 2003
summary This paper presents developments concerning a digital library called CUMINCAD.ES, which includes CADrelated publications in Spanish language. CUMINCAD is an acronym for Cumulative Index on CAD and in this library only publications in English language are archived. While English may be the lingua franca of scientific communication, publications in other languages is important to strengthen local cultures, invent professional terminology, enable technology transfer to those who are not very proficient in English, such as practitioners and students and to provide an incentive for authors to publish in their native languages. CUMINCAD.ES (http://cumincades.scix.net) is a repository complementing CUMINCAD providing a basis for the investigation of multilingual repositories. As this is work in progress, the state of the art will be reviewed as well as the potential for further developments.

source Timmermans, Harry (Ed.), Third Design and Decision Support Systems in Architecture and Urban Planning - Part one: Architecture Proceedings (Spa, Belgium), August 18-21, 1996
summary In this paper new forms of network-based organizations are discussed in general and within the building industry in particular. Special attention is given to cross functional network teams. New emerging building design and construction functions within these network teams are explained. Network-based organizations in the building industry are considered to be virtual organizations "avant la lettre". The shift to these types of organizations in the building industry can strongly be supported by developments in information technology. A new IT-concept, the extranet is introduced and explained in the paper.

summary With the advent of social networks, it became apparent that the social aspect of designing and learning plays a crucial role in students’ education. Technologies and skills are the base on which learners interact. The ease of communication, leadership opportunity, democratic interaction, teamwork, and the sense of community are some of the aspects that are now in the centre of design interaction. The paper examines Virtual Design Studios (VDS) that used media-rich platforms and analyses the influence the social aspect plays in solving all problems on the sample of a design studio at Deakin University. It studies the effectiveness of the generated social intelligence and explores the facilitation of students’ self-directed learning. Hereby the paper studies the construction of knowledge via social interaction and how blended learning environments foster motivation and information exchange. It presents its finding based on VDS that were held over the past three years.
