title A language of Abstract Floor Plans

summary Theoretical and experimental results from the implementation of a system for computer-aided floor-plan design are reported. The system is based on a potentially exhaustive search for solutions that satisfy user-specified constraints, but the paper concentrates on techniques for limiting and guiding the search. The emphasis is on two aspects of floor-plan design: the use of a formalized concept of sketching, and the language in which design constraints are specified by the user. A well-defined concept of abstract draft plans is achieved by limiting corner coordinates to intervals, rather than single numbers. Mathematical properties of draft and their defining constraints as derived from the user's constraints are outlined, and the role of drafts in computer- aided floor plan design is investigated and illustrated by examples. The specification language is based on a small set of primitives whose combined power of expression is also illustrated. The syntax and semantics of the language are formally defined (in two appendices), and the importance of careful development of languages for future design automation is pointed out

In this way, I redefine these crossings from images where the certainties on the real thing/that represented/that done/that simulated disappear.

summary The dynamic analysis (prospective), of products and systems, it is a methodological resource of the design that allows synthetically, and with great economy of investigation resources and time, to put in evidence the tendencies in the evolution of the object. Finally, the design strategies are defined as postures in front of these tendencies of evolution of the significant variables in the cycle of the product. Having as theoretical context the theory of systems,we explored the dynamic analysis of products and systems, taking their evolution along a temporary series that embraces a complete cycle, from the birth of the object until their maturation in the period of saturation of the market. Starting from the analysis of the evolution of the diverse subsystems, and the conflicts among the world of the necessities, (as pressure exercised from the context), and the technical agreement, it shows the evolutionary dynamics,the underlying conflicts to the logic of the system for each product. They are revealed to the design like a cultural operation that should keep in mind the processes of transformation of the mental representations of the object whose evolution should respect certain rules for its as, clearly such as the well-known maya threshold, (most advanced, yet accepted).

summary In the necessity to fortify the inhabitants’ decisions in the transformation of their own habitats, it was opened an investigation line about design and production of cartographic maps and models as part of the participative management device in urban environmental projects. In that stage it worked with organizations orientated to improve socio-environmental situation in indigent neighborhoods and settlements. This investigation is part of the UBAC and T Project of the Science and Technique Secretariat of the University of Buenos Aires during the last four years, consisting in an exploration of new professional sceneries for the graphic design management. In this report we present a model in which it is explored the outstanding variables in the design of this elements and its interactions in the course of the project, specially, the decisions related to the technological matter. summary This approach intends to develop a consulting capacity in design and technological management for the sustainable growth, supporting local communities with specific resources. In the development of the technological knowledge transfer, the acritical applications, under the cover of paradigms of technological globalization that give their back to the local contexts, and of the irrelevant pedagogical routines, dissociate the technology from its social meaning. In our research approach, the transfer experience is the unit of analysis which under observation relocates and redefines technique in the context of sustainable local development, uncovering its relations with society. In this work, we will show one experience that explain the contribution of design to sustainable development, experiences that specially reveal the need to count with criteria and indicators of technological performance in participative and inclusive scenarios.

title Assessment of User Interaction Using Photogrammetry as a Tool for Preserving Rosetta Stone

summary Many Egyptian artifacts, statues, and monuments are displayed in museums around the world, where most of them are illegally transferred. One of these monuments is the Rosetta stone, which is located at the British Museum in London, where Egypt has been demanding its return for years. Many applications such as Photogrammetry can be used to temporarily document, restore, and preserve any missing or damaged monuments that no longer exist. The paper aims to assess the user interaction with the absence of unattainable/looted artifacts focusing on the Rosetta stone using photogrammetry as a tool. This would increase users ‘awareness and interaction with their heritage through the integration of virtual and augmented techniques. The method used Recap Autodesk software as a guideline to generate an accurate 3D model of the stone to simulate a real environment. 3D Vista software and Vuforia Unity plugin were used for virtual and augmented user interaction. A survey has been done on 36 participants to test the model for assessing their interaction. The results recorded high interaction and satisfaction from the participants through experiencing the virtual tours of the Rosetta stone in its actual environments via augmented reality. Introducing Photogrammetry techniques would not only help to preserve the missing pieces but also reduce the boundaries between various generations and their heritage. Moreover, VR and AR can help museums attract new audiences and encourage repeat visits from existing ones. Additionally, these technologies can help museums reach a wider audience by providing virtual tours and exhibits that can be accessed from anywhere in the world, making it easier for people to engage with art and culture regardless of their location.

title Robot assembly system for computer-integrated construction

summary The construction industry demands a productivity increase that cannot be attained by means of traditional methods for masonry that have already reached their system limits and cannot contribute to further effectiveness. Further rationalisation can only be achieved by the reduction of labour and construction times. Therefore, a certain innovative leap is required by a system approach that combines the already existing construction technologies with new information, automation and robot technologies. An integrated automation system has been developed in the European ESPRIT III Robot Assembly System for Computer Integrated Construction (ROCCO) Project. Industrial partners and research centres from Germany, Spain and Belgium that are linked to the construction industry and robotics have formed the consortium. Block assembly tasks are performed by means of two robotics systems. One of the many challenges of these systems is related with the development of the control approach of large-range robots with hydraulic actuators. Conventional control strategies, based on PID or PD controllers and linear models, are unsuitable and prove completely inefficient for these robots. New control methods are necessary in order to achieve high performance with a reasonable time-consuming algorithm, useful in a real time control system. The most significant aspects related to the development of these robotic systems and their control systems are presented in this paper.

summary Recent developments in industrial robotics present an increasing degree of control in additive manufacturing, enabling customization of architectural building components at the scale of the individual unit. Combining the affordances of a 6-axis robotic arm, paste- based extrusion, and terracotta clay, Modulo Continuo presents methods for part-customization of evaporative cooling facade modules. The design of the facade modules is developed firstly at the scale of the tectonic unit - as a self-supporting, interlocking modular system of curved modules with an embedded water reservoir for evaporative cooling. Second, this is developed at the scale of the toolpath - in which the density of the infill geometry in the modules is calibrated based on principles of evaporative cooling. This research presents aesthetic and performative opportunities through an exploration of infill patterning and density of modules based on evaporative cooling requirements. To produce each curved module through additive manufacturing, curved CNC milled substrates are used to support the geometry while accommodating clay shrinkage. Furthermore, this paper presents novel digital workflows for the customization of a modular façade system and the generation of variable toolpaths for infill patterns. By developing additive manufacturing methodologies for part- customization, the research presents future opportunities for the digital fabrication of ceramic construction elements.

This technology has the potential to enhance the optimization of environmental performance criteria in spatial enclosures, using a wide range of actuators that function at different scales. The combination of such ultra-small sensors with actuators will enable the creation of spatial enclosures that are complex adaptive systems, which dynamically optimize the various environmental performance criteria for the enclosures. Defining a model for the optimization process in these systems presents significant challenges. This paper will set out a model for the use of ultra-small sensor systems in optimizing environmental performance criteria in spatial enclosures, especially acoustical performance criteria.

summary This paper presents a computational design method that integrates capabilities to manage material and fabrication tolerances occurring during the robotic assembly of spatial timber structures with tight-fit connections. This is achieved by building a data-base of tolerances measured during the robotic assembly process, which then allow for tolerance simulation as part of an assembly sequence planning method based on the Kruskal algorithm. Through a combination of optimization and linear regression techniques, the developed method enables designers to minimize deviations of their designs and diminish the risks of misfits during fabrication. In consequence, it allows for tolerance-aware designs.

title Archaeological Site Reconstruction With AutoDesk's 3D Studio

summary 3D Studio is an IBM-compatible computer modeling program that enables users to create three-dimensional renderings of a variety of objects. In its ability to import a wide variety of maps and other images, 3D Studio allows for the realistic rendering of models created within AutoCAD or other 3D CAD packages. Over the past year, the Homol'ovi research program has been utilizing this software to create near photo-realistic renderings of conjectural site models. My own interests in three-dimensional computer modeling developed out of work at the site of Homol'ovi IV, a 150-room pueblo site located near Winslow, Arizona. The site was situated upon a steep 30-meter bluff with a bedrock cap. Approximately 24 rooms were located on top of the bedrock cap, with another 125 rooms situated on the slope of the butte. During the 1989 field season five structures were excavated, while a separate crew worked clearing and mapping the tops of walls. Mapping was accomplished with a Topcon EDM/theodolite station, and a standard map was created from this process. (See Fig. 3.) While the map was sufficient to show the general layout of the site, I remained unsatisfied; a 2D plan view simply did not convey the vertical dimension of the pueblo. At this point the Homol'ovi Research Program purchased a copy of AutoCAD in order to begin exploring three-dimensional mapping and modeling.

summary Discovery and innovation, which have traditionally involved thinking visually and producing images, increasingly benefit from labor-saving devices like GIS and CAD. As new visualization technologies are implemented, it is particularly important to understand the human faculties which use pictures as tools in thinking. Science and engineering define problems, explain processes, and design solutions through observation, imagination and logic. This conceptual thought relies on a cognitive `database' of sensed verbal and non-verbal information, which is retained, managed, and updated within the short and long-term human memories. Research suggests that the individual must actively manipulate a phenomenon under study and its representations to enhance and maintain this database, and to produce abstractions and generalizations. Graphics are particularly important in this process of discovering correlations, contradictions and connections, and subsequent communication to others. Graphics offer high information density, simultaneity, variable detail and the capacity for showing multivariate relations. A `gestalt' property leads to the discovery of new relationships since the graphic whole always exceeds the sum of its parts. A cycle occurs in which the individual interacts with the phenomenon and produces explicit knowledge in the form of graphics and text, testing and refining each against knowledge and abstractions held in the mind

summary We studied CAD system users to find out how they use the sophisticated customization and extension facilities offered by many CAD products. We found that users of varying levels of expertise collaborate to customize their CAD environments and to create programmatic extensions to their applications. Within a group of users, there is at least one local expert who provides support for other users. We call this person a local developer. The local developer is a fellow domain expert, not a professional programmer, outside technical consultant or MIS staff member. We found that in some CAD environments the support role has been formalized so that local developers are given official recognition, and time and resources to pursue local developer activities. In general, this formalization of the local developer role appears successful. We discuss the implications of our findings for work practices and for software design.

summary Building Information Modeling plays an important role in laboratory design. The reasonable layout of the outdoor equipment pipeline is the key to supporting the efficient operation of the laboratory, increasing the flexibility of the laboratory space module, and planning a holistic smart campus space. However, the traditional BIM model lacks convenient visualization and interoperability in the early stage of the program and may lead to inconsistency. This paper aims to propose an integrated visual optimization model toolkit of the equipment and piping using the Rhino+Grasshopper platform. Based on this digital-twin model, the horizontal and vertical space required for the outdoor equipment piping system can be quickly calculated in the site planning stage. The workflow improves the efficiency and accuracy of equipment pipeline system design and reduces multiple design changes. After verifying the validity of the model through two virtual scenarios, it was demonstrated in a real laboratory campus. In the construction drawing stage, the toolkit was used to check whether the interspace of different professional pipeline meets the requirements. This paper expands the design concept, emphasizes the coupling relationship between pipelines and building space, and integrates the experimental and building space concepts throughout the design process.
