title Evaluating Spatial Justice through the Analysis of the Relationship between House Prices and the Accessibility to Urban Infrastructures with a Big Data Approach: A Comparative Study of Beijing and Shanghai in China

summary The rapid development of cities has caused many problems of spatial injustice in urban communities. However, how to detect and measure such injustice has not been fully developed yet. With open-source urban big data and advanced data analysis methods, this study evaluates spatial justice in cities by analyzing the relationship between the house prices of communities and the accessibility to urban facilities. It investigates the accessibility to critical infrastructures mainly in five dimensions: public transportation, shopping, education, health care and recreation. The whole research is grounded by a comparative case study of the two biggest cities in China, Beijing and Shanghai. Integrating the big data of 5394 communities from these two cities, this study examines if the house prices of communities are highly related to the convenience of accessibility to urban infrastructures, which can inform if there is any spatial injustice in Chinese cities. Findings indicate that the situations of spatial justice in Beijing and Shanghai are pretty different. Residents in Beijing City have relevantly equal access to urban facilities, which has little connection with house prices, while citizens in Shanghai may experience a spatial injustice as people living in higher house-price communities have noticeably better accessibility to urban amenities. Such a distinct difference may come from the different urban planning policies in these two cities, as the former has a human-centred equality-minded approach to embody the political significance while the latter takes rapid economic development as its priority for urban planning.

title Spatial Elements Imbued with Cognition: A possible step toward the "Architecture Machine"

summary When Nicolas Negroponte, in 1971, described future architecture as a ‘machine’, he was clear to ascribe this new character to intelligence and common sense rather than to kinesis and adaptation.Within this framework, the article presents a new direction toward the creation of an “Architecture Machine” which evolves from responsive architecture to include empathy control systems.The aim is set in two paths, with the first one exploring feasibility and the second securing unobtrusive operation to better facilitate human activity and comfort.The proposed architectural approach, for which the authors have coined the term sensponsive, employs Ambient Intelligence to imbue space with cognitive skills and provide it with a sense of why, how and when to act, while maintaining an empathic distance.Within this framework, the article presents a series of experiments to highlight the concepts and the techniques currently associated with a sensponsive design approach.

summary From natural objects to man-made artifacts, tiling is all around us: it is the act of rationalizing highly complex form by breaking it up into smaller, continuous components. If well pursued, tiled objects can be easily designed and assembled. However, a geometric-centric view of tiling, whereby a predefined form determines the shape, size, and organization of tiles, has victimized the field of digital design. This paper questions the role of tiling as rationalizing method and offers an alternative theoretical framework and technical grounding for tiling behavior: the act of generation-through-tessellation informed by material behavior. The tools developed are implemented in the design of a 3D-printed chaise lounge, using multiple materials. The technical objective is to introduce a quantitative characterization and analysis of property mapping, as it is applied to a tiling algorithm using Voronoi cell tessellation. The network of tessellated Voronoi cells is used as an element in the Voronoi Finite Element Method (V-FEM) that the author developed. Various characterization functions and geometric parameters are generated, and V-FEM is executed for plane-strain analysis of doubly curved surfaces, from which global and local responses are evaluated.

Such a distinction results in applications of remote sensing after the process of material fabrication. Sensors are commonly perceived as electronic patches which initiate mechanical output with response to electrical input. This work seeks to establish a novel approach to the application of electronics in building skins, which prioritizes material selection, behavior, and fabrication technology in relation to the required task, over postproduction sensor integration. The term “Rapid Craft” is proposed to describe such design protocols which couple material behavior and fabrication in the design of responsive skins. Rapid Craft is a designation for the incorporation of craft materialization knowledge within the framework of CNC processes of fabrication. A light-sensing inflatable skin system is developed as a working prototype, which demonstrates such an approach.

Such a distinction results in the implementation of remote sensing devices post the process of material fabrication. Sensors are commonly perceived as electronic add-on patches which initiate mechanical output with response to electrical input. This work seeks to establish a novel approach to the integration of electronics in building skins which prioritizes material selection, behavior and fabrication given a required task, over post-production sensor application. The term “FAB Finding” is proposed to describe an instrumental methodology facilitating the coupling of CNC fabrication processes with material organization and behavior. It offers a design mentality which emphasizes the nature and the effects brought about by the use of specific fabrication processes which are by definition inherent in the design product and its behavior. A light-sensing inflatable skin system is developed as a working prototype demonstrating such an approach.

title Get Real Towards Performance-Driven Computational Geometry

summary In historic design conventions geometry has traditionally promoted descriptive manifestations of form. Beyond the realm of geometry, the concept of performance which may inform such manifestations also carries important potential for design generation. This work explores the relation between geometry and performance from a computational-geometry perspective. It does so by revisiting certain analytical tools offered in most of today's 3-D modelers which support the evaluation of any generated surface geometry specifically curvature and draft angle analysis. It is demonstrated that these tools can be reconstructed with added functionality assigning 3-D geometrical features informed by structural and environmental performance respectively. In the examples illustrated surface thickness (as a function of structural performance) is assigned to curvature values, and transparency (as a function of light performance) is assigned to light analysis values. In a broader scope this work promotes a methodology of performance-informed form generation by means of computational geometry. Vector and tensor math was exploited to reconstruct existing analytical tools adapted to function as design generators.

summary The formation of non-woven fibre structures generated by the Bombyx mori silkworm is explored as a computational approach for shape and material optimization. Biological case studies are presented and a design approach for the use of silkworms as entities that can “compute” fibrous material organization is given in the context of an architectural design installation. We demonstrate that in the absence of vertical axes the silkworm can spin flat silk patches of variable shape and density. We present experiments suggesting sufficient correlation between topographical surface features, spinning geometry and fibre density. The research represents a scalable approach for optimization-driven fibre-based structural design and suggests a biology-driven strategy for material computation.

Computer-based three-dimensional formal analysis of designs is employed as a technique for the acquisition of knowledge of classes of designs. Through formal analysis certain general models of building form are postulated. summary One of the main problems of the web is its dominant textual characteristics. Since the natural way designers express their design ideas is in graphical form, accessing graphical information is a key issue in developing the web as a visual design medium. Since most of the design documents which are created today are products of CAD programs, our current research emphasis is upon indexing and retrieval of CAD documents on the WEB. In this paper we present an approach for the utility and accessibility of CAD-based design information. An approach for the use of CAD documents as a form of distributed case-based design resource on the web is proposed. Possibilities for employing case-based CAD as a theoretical foundation for building large design resource bases on the Web are presented. A case-based technology as a basis for indexing and storage of design cases in a form which enhances the accessibility of design information is proposed.

summary The nature of the Internet as a medium for the representation, storage and accessing of design knowledge is explored and various research issues were introduced. The appropriateness of certain characteristics of the medium as a potential environment for a new interactive way of doing design by exploring design ideas are investigated. Considerations of the Web as a collaboratively constructed and maintained design resource are explored. Cognitive models are proposed in order to support cognitive behaviors in search , browsing and concept expansion. summary Our research approach which is termed Cognitive Design Media (CDM) demonstrates how the cognitive phenomena of design can be supported in computerized environments. Our current work on the ‘sketch’ project is introduced presented and illustrated. Sketching in design is considered to be one of the significant cognitive phenomena which supports exploration through re-representation in design. Until now, only the medium of hand drawing and sketching has been considered to support these processes. Rather than automating the traditional hand-made sketch, or interpreting sketches in a computer system, we are attempting to employ the computer to support one of the cognitive mechanism of re-representation which underlie the sketch activity.

title Precedents in design: a computational model for the organization of precedent knowledge

summary A computational model for the organization of design precedent knowledge is developed. The model is composed of distinct chunks of knowledge called design stories. A formalism for the design story is proposed which represents the linkage between design issue, concept and form in designs. Stories are structured in memory according to a semantic network. The lexicon of the semantic network acts as a memory index. The memory structure and indexing system are demonstrated to enhance search and to support cross-contextual browsing and exploration in the precedent library. The approach is demonstrated in a pilot design aid system in the task domain of early conceptual design in architecture.

title Visual Reasoning in Case-Based Design

summary The interest in CBR as a relevant paradigm for design has led to a series of successful AID workshops over the last few years. Most of these workshops were focused on traditional issues and topics in CBR such as indexing, retrieval, and adaptation. Despite the long-term effort to establish the theoretical foundations for CBR in design, we have yet to achieve the promise of this affinity (CBR and Design). Though there is a general consensus of the cognitive significance of CBR to design and general optimism regarding the promise of CBR technologies for the advancement of design systems, we have yet to realize this potential. In order to strengthen the field in design it appears that additional theoretical efforts are needed in the following two directions. First, we must re-consider the complexity of design and design reasoning as it relates to CBR. One possible direction for future exploration is to view CBR as part of the complex, hybrid reasoning processes in design. This can be done by the integration of other significant cognitive aspects of design which are investigated in relevant fields in AI. Visual reasoning is a fundamental attribute of design, and therefor combining these two research areas may provide significant results for the field. The second direction is to investigate the possible integration of CBR paradigms and techniques with existing computational technologies, including CAD, and electronic media. These two subjects are the main objectives of the workshop. The first section of the workshop will focus on Re-formulating Theoretical Foundations for CBR in Design; within this part of the workshop it is proposed that special emphasis be placed upon Visual Reasoning and Case-Based Design The second part of the workshop will discuss the applicative implications of these re-formulations. The workshop aims to bring together researchers who work on visual and case-based reasoning. It aims to provide a forum for intensive interaction among researchers in these areas. We expect that a diverse background of participants (from AI as well as related cognitive and design domains) will lead to a rich and lively exchange of points of view and will contribute to the identification of significant research issues.

summary The research field, focuses on a new research area of Knowledge Based Systems for Architectural Design. The research deals with concepts and tools emerging from Artificial Intelligence, Knowledge Based Systems and Expert Systems. The research is involved with the construction of a theoretical basis for the development of approaches and methods for the representation and control of design knowledge as a reasoning process. Key questions which attempt to reconsider representation and control in design are formulated. The following questions serve as a research framework out of which new approaches, methods and tools were developed. (1.)What are the existing ideas, methods and tools in Expert Systems? (2.) What are the performance characteristics of Expert Systems in Architectural Design ? (3.) What are the desired operative characteristics and interactions for Expert Systems in design ? (4.) How is it possible to formulate and apply the diverse forms of Architectural Knowledge in Expert Systems for design? (5.) What are the problems of implementation in the development of Expert Systems for design ? The state of the art in knowledge based systems is surveyed, while emphasizing the differences between conventional systems and knowledge based systems. Representation and control methods and the components of expert systems are reviewed. Expert systems for diagnosis, interpretation, planning and design are analysed with respect to their performance characteristics. Techniques and technologies of existing tools are defined. An expert system for the generation and evaluation of ill defined architectural design problems is develped. A formalization of the concept of 'design interpretation' is proposed and developed. It is applied in the process of defining and classifying the performance characteristics of expert systems for design. This concept is based upon two sets of reasoning processes: those which enable a mapping between design requirements and solution descriptions in the generation stage of design and those between solution descriptions and performance evaluation in the evaluation stage of design. On the basis of the formalization of this concept, an expert system capable of integrating various modes of performance is proposed and developed. The system functions as a 'design generator', a 'design critic', or a' design critic-generator'. These modes, which integrate generation and evaluation in the same system, operate by employing both forward chaining and backward chaining inference mechanisms. As a result of the examination of desired forms of interactions, a new approach for dual direction interpretation between graphic and verbal modes is developed. This approach reflects the importance of both graphical and verbal expression in design. The approach is based upon a simultaneous mapping between symbolic-verbal interpretation and graphic interpretation. The work presents the mapping process through the concept of design interpretation, employing geometrical knowledge, typological knowledge and evaluation knowledge. A tool which provides communication between an expert system and a graphic system was developed and is presented. The importance of such a tool in expert systems for design resides in the provision of free choice to the user for interacting with the system either graphically or verbally during the design process. An additional component in the development of knowledge-based systems for design is related to the important question of knowledge definition and the representational schemata of design knowledge. A new representational scheme for complex architectural knowledge, termed 'The generation and refinement scheme of a design prototype' is proposed and developed. Its operation as part of a total integrated design system is demonstrated. The scheme is based upon the structures of knowledge of design precedents which constitute typical situations and solutions in architectural design. This scheme provides an appropriate representation for the two types of knowledge which operate in a refinement process of a design prototype. Generative knowledge describes the solution space by predefined refinement stages; interpretive knowledge enables their selection. The examination of representational methods for the proposed scheme indicated that employing a single representational method lacked enough generalization and expressive power for the needs of the design knowledge structures. It was found that a way to represent complex structures is through the integration of multiple methods of representation, each one according to the knowledge characteristics. In order to represent the proposed scheme of design knowledge, a unique method was developed which integrates both rules and frames. The method consists of a rules-frames-rules structure for the representation of a design prototype. An approach is developed for the implementation of these concepts in an expert system for design. PRODS: A prototype based expert system shell for design is developed and demonstrated. The system consists of three basic components: a rule-based expert system shell, a frame system, and a knowledge base interface. All system interactions are controlled by the inference engine. It passes control between the rule-base and the frame-base inference engines, and provides communications between the rule-based and frame-based representations. It is suggested that expert system can interface with external CAD systems including graphics, communicating through a central representation. These concepts and developments are demonstrated in two implementations. The PREDIKT system for the preliminary design of the residential kitchen; the PROUST system for the selection and refinement of dwelling types. PREDIKT demonstrates the integration of rules and a graphical-verbal interpreter; in addition, PROUST demonstrates the significance of hybrid representation in the generation and refinement processes. The results and conlusions are summarized. Future research agenda within the field of knowledge-based systems for design is discussed, and potential research areas are defined.

Re-representational theory (RRH) is introduced and the cognitive mechanisms which enable re-representation in design are explicated. A theory of re-representation and multiple representations in design is proposed. The concept of adaptation developed in CBR is exploited to formalize transformations in the re-representation process. An empirical research was constructed to study the cognitive abilities which underlie the creative phenomena of re-representation in design adaptation. On the basis of the findings of the experiment, a model of design re-representation is developed and presented. The main concepts of the model, multiple representation and re-representation, are shown to provide a powerful basis for the understanding of creative behavior in design.
