summary In a meeting that focuses on the opportunities offered us by what the organisers call the "Cyber-Real", it is, perhaps, fitting to return to the root word on the so-called "CyberCulture", Cybernetics, and to reflect what the concepts and understandings it has developed and deals with offer us, especially in the light of the "Cyber-Real". To that end, I explore some features of current Cybernetic thinking in order to develop a view of Cybernetic Realities, and to use those to elucidate just what might be "Cyber-Real". The reader may well ask why this paper is called "Cybernetic Realities" when, all through, I talk of Cybernetic Reality. The reason comes from a key argument in this paper: each of us constructs our own Cybernetic Reality. The result is singularly plural.

summary To collaborate is to work together. To work, in my thinking, together presumes participation. When I talk of collaboration, I talk with the notion of participation in mind. I shall often write of participation as an alternative term to collaboration, in this paper. I am interested in anything that may enhance our creativity (as designers). There are those whose interest in collaboration is different, and equally justifiable. The main part of the title is from a quote by the composer Harrison Birtwistle, who said: ìTradition is not aping the past but making the future.î The intention in what I write is to suggest ways in which Information and Communication Technology can be used, not to ape the past, but to make the future, especially by enhancing our potential to act creatively. I do this by introducing facets of ideas in fragments, so they can interact with each other, rather than forming the great, separate arches of traditional arguments, one after the other. For me, collaboration is more than co-operation or co-ordination. It must involve novelty, the creation of something beyond the expected and more than an improvement a quantum step.

summary This paper presents a flexible, yet powerful lighting analysis tool, LightSketch. LightSketch is a sketch-based modelling program for lighting analysis. It allows the user to draw both architectural and lighting related symbols which are converted into a 3D model for lighting visualisation. It is motivated by examining the strengths and limitations of current lighting design practices. Its use is illustrated with design scenarios.

summary The highly developed glasfiber technology of the Berlin ISDN-B prototype network will make it possible to test a future benefit of the possibilities of real time visual communication for architects and planers in their home office. In the project an external user will be able to share high end visual outputs of a Service Center for Visualisation with his own low end CAAD workstation via ISDN-B. The capabilities of these services will range from a still picture archive, real time access to video film archive, a variety of conventional database services to special postproduction for his own 3D data models. The transferred 3D model can be rendered an animated on the Center's systems, if requested also integrated into a video background film. The production will than be available on his workstation screen. These new means will be evaluated in the view of the architects new possibilities for the design process.

summary The field of Computer-Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) is composed of two main threads of development, Academic and Professional, and can be described in three decades, which correspond roughly with three generations of computer systems. This paper presents a brief description of the entire period of school- and practice-based research and development on the applications of computers in Architectural design, and shows how these efforts have and have not been relevant to students' future experiences. Educators must take a fresh look at their current courses and research programs to make sure that they are relevant in the rapidly changing world of professional practice. With limited human and financial resources at most institutions, it is critical to make the best possible choices for the immediate and long-term benefit of today's students. While it is not appropriate for Schools of Architecture to operate strictly at the behest of the profession, we must prepare our students for the world in which they will practice. Therefore, I believe that it is important for the faculty at each School to consider the following questions: (-) Are our students prepared to enter realistic positions as soon as they graduate? (-) Do they have the background necessary to use computers effectively in the future? (-) Do our research efforts have results that designers are likely to use today or any time soon to make better buildings or to make buildings better?

summary During May, June and July of this year, I had the pleasure of visiting twelve institutions across Europe where computers are being used in the teaching of Architecture. There are as many different approaches to the incorporation of computers in the curriculum as there are places, and they all have some degree of success. My greatest surprise was the large size of these Schools, even in relatively small countries. Dealing with a huge number of students makes any kind of mandatory computer instruction almost impossible. In spite of all difficulties, enthusiasm and willingness to work directly with students was the single most important characteristic in the faculty and staff who are having the greatest success. Support staff dedicated to the maintenance of equipment and software were provided at most of the institutions. For those who do not have this benefit it is critical to relieve the teaching and research faculty of the need for these time-consuming tasks. Formal research activities are not essential to effective education. The process of setting up such efforts is again a distraction from the more important job of teaching. If research projects grow naturally out of the curriculum, they may be pursued without impeding instruction. Most serious of all, there is a substantial lack of communication and cooperation among these schools, and by implication, among all of the other schools in Europe. The mechanism of annual conferences held by ECAADE is insufficient to exchange information and interests. There were several occasions when I mentioned work that was being carried out at one place that would match very nicely with efforts at another. However, it is clearly impossible for any one school to spearhead this kind of collection and coordination of activities. The only appropriate organisation for this kind of exchange would be a centralised service initiated and maintained by the European Community. It is very important that such a body does not attempt to limit or direct the work of individual schools, rather simply serves as a clearinghouse through which the various groups can benefit from each other's work, to the mutual benefit of all.

summary This paper is part of our research on the digital transition in architecture, and more particularly on the integration of BIM (Building Information Management) technology. Indeed, in the field of AEC in France, this transition is still ongoing and remains difficult for architects. BIM technology changes the way people work and communicate, and remains only a tool without a method behind it. His arrival then raises technical but also human questions. Our research then turns to the social sciences and project management sciences to see if the creation or adaptation of project management methods can facilitate this integration. In other fields such as industry, software engineering, or HMI design, we have seen the emergence of agile methods that focus more on design teams, and therefore communication, than on the process itself. After experimenting with several agile practices, we identified the need for a design team to be mentored by someone in the role of facilitator or coach. This article describes how we can transfer to students an agile practice called BIM-agile Coach that we experimented during a weeklong workshop.

summary The objective of this paper is to clarify how value creation can be a part of architectural design and end-products when using the new emerging technology of additive manufacturing. Different kinds of values that have emerged from the research material have been analysed and summarised using selected case studies of recent building-scale projects. In applying this technique to architecture, the result can be visually and functionally novel, smarter and more sustainable buildings or products. A new individually manufactured or customised architecture can be created to serve different cultural and well-being needs cost effectively and without any waste. This new production method can lead to unique joint structures with the use of traditionally produced new or old building parts to enhance architecture, prevent climate change or aid environmental issues. However, most research projects and applications done by commercial companies are at the early stages.

summary Recently, digital fabrication, being a logical extension of computer-aided technology to the material world, was introduced into the field of computational design in architecture. The objective of this experimental study is to investigate and systematise data regarding the production issues and limitations of the main Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) fabrication technologies adopted for physical modelling in architecture. This study also aims to observe the value of potential feedback to the design process from different types of digitally fabricated architectural models. This experimental research systematically explores digital fabrication as a computer-aided modelling tool, using two international architectural competition projects as case studies: the design of a skyscraper and relocatable schools. Developed by authors especially for this research paper, each case study acts as a test bed to compare and evaluate digital production techniques adopted for physical modelling in architecture. Designs go through a process of refinement using CNC fabrication as an integral part of the design process. Each step in the process is closely evaluated as to its effectiveness according to a matrix of feedback criteria.

summary This paper reports the design, fabrication and evaluation strategies of full-scale aluminium panel prototypes developed for a kinetic hybrid facade system. The concept of a hybrid facade system was proposed as a solution to maximise the value of kinetic intelligent building systems by repurposing the animation sunscreening as a low-resolution media display. The overarching research project investigates the potential, feasibility and real-life applications of a hybrid facade that integrates the: environmental, media and individual micro-control functions in one compound system that operates through autonomous wirelessly controlled hexagonal rotating panels. The study explores new ways of communication and connectivity in architectural and urban context, utilising and fusing together a wide range of technologies including: artificial intelligence, robotics, wireless control technologies, calibration of physical and digital simulations, development of fully autonomous self-organised and powered units and the use of additive digital manufacturing. This article reports the third research stage of the hybrid facade project development - the manufacture of full scale panel prototypes.

summary The escalating climate crisis and diminishing resources call for a radical shift from high-carbon building materials to more sustainable alternatives. This paper investigates the potential of mycelium, a living biomaterial, in creating sustainable architecture from household waste, addressing resource depletion, and contributing to a resilient built environment. The study's unique contribution is the practical application of household waste to produce mycelium composites for building materials, supporting a circular economy. In an experimental study, sixty samples with differing substrate-to-mycelium ratios were systematically analysed for weight gain/loss, shrinkage post-drying, health of growth, mould contamination, and aesthetic qualities. The findings demonstrate the feasibility and limitations of utilising local waste and living materials in architecture, addressing the research question concerning mycelium's potential in sustainable and localised construction. This paper details the experimental findings and outlines the next research phase, advancing the innovative application of mycelium in the field, and their adoption within wider communities.

summary This paper presents a reflection on the co-design approach taken for designing a web-based and smartphone-augmented reality (AR) application (app) for a local museum exhibit on geo-located data for entomology specimens. The AR app allows visitors to spatially visualise insect specimens in-situ and view more detailed information through their own devices. The design of the app was guided by continuous input from curators of the museum to ensure it met their requirements. The contribution of this paper is two-fold: (1) design recommendations for AR apps created for museum exhibitions, which are derived from a focus group session with museum curators; and (2) considerations for co-designing AR apps in museum contexts, based on a reflection of the design process. This paper details the iterative co-design process that was adopted for the Big Data Bugs project and presents a short summary of results deriving from a focus group testing with museum curators.

summary Bushfires are a global phenomenon, closely connected to climate change and safety, resilience and sustainability of cities and human settlements. Government agencies, architects and researchers across institutions are committed to improving Australia‚s resilience to bushfires yet grappling with ways to further mitigate risks. ‚Build back better‚ is the often-used phrase to support bushfire resilience, yet there remains a limited understanding of how secondary structures, such as storage sheds, garages, and fences contribute to or mitigate fire loss. These secondary structures are integral to properties yet fall, largely, outside land use planning approval processes and other regulations. Computational modelling can be adapted to deliver visualisations that increase awareness. We developed several simulation approaches which addressed distances, relationship to and the construction materials of secondary structures, terrain slopes and environmental forces. We conclude that gaming engines may offer the optimal immersive opportunity for residents and others to visualise fire risks related to secondary structures to increase awareness and improve bushfire readiness behaviours.

summary Sensory Urbanism is an experimental prototyping project exploring the potential of immersive Virtual Reality (VR) environments to support the incorporation of sensory and intangible aspects of place. The study investigates how sensory exploration of urban places can be integrated into decision making regarding the future of cities. In the past, numerous studies reported various sophisticated 'livability' measures, deeming to determine what makes a city a great place to live in. While a part of these measures can be quantified and be represented as text, graphs or images, most of the qualitative aspects of place are inherently abstract and sensory. These aspects have to be experienced to be understood and therefore they are extremely difficult to communicate using conventional representation means. The proposition explored in this study is that the increasing ubiquity of VR and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies can provide new opportunities to engage with the multi-sensory and temporal aspects of urban place. A mixed media approach was adopted, tapping into a temporal dimension as well as visual, aural and kinesthetic range of human senses. The paper reports on the development of the VR sensory urbanism prototype and the initial pilot study that demonstrated the proof-of-concept.

summary Despite the potential advantages of new architectural practices and learning forms, there has been very limited adoption of VR systems in the field of architectural design and education. Considerable obstacles to implementing VR applications are associated with substantial time, and expense commitments; in addition to required skills in VR development using gaming authoring software. The overarching study suggests adopting an alternative approach to VR development. This paper focuses on the testing and validation of architectural VR applications. We present a systematic methodology for the evaluation of interactive VR systems, using established assessment methods and metrics, detailing user-testing procedures and providing qualitative and quantitative evidence, and relevant data analysis methods. The paper provides valuable insight into the design of the user studies and evaluation of interactive VR environments in architecture, enabling future research and informing design applications in a wider field.

summary This study proposes that an alternative development workflow for hybrid learning can be implemented using a commercially available VR tour software application, 3DVista, that requires much less time and effort to produce virtual environments. The proposed alternative was compared with a popular gaming engine Unity. This paper presents a comparative experimental study that tests the implementation of these two workflow approaches used for site visits and design explorations for architectural education.
