summary Bioplastics are by their very nature parametric materials, programmable through the selection of constituent components and the ratios in which they appear, and as such present significant potential as architectural building materials for reasons beyond sustainability and biodegradability. This paper presents a system through which rigid three-dimensional doubly curved hyperbolic paraboloid shapes are automatically formed from two-dimensional sheet casts by harnessing the inherent flexibility and expressiveness of bioplastics. The system uses a gelatin-based bioplastic supplemented with granular organic matter from food waste in conjunction with a split-frame casting system that enables the self-formation of three-dimensional geometries by directing the force of the bioplastic's uniform contraction as it dries. By adjusting the food waste added to the bioplastic, its properties can be tuned according to formal and performative needs; here, dehydrated granulated orange peel and dehydrated spent espresso-ground coffee are used both to impart their inherent characteristics and also to influence the degree of curvature of the resulting bioplastic surfaces. Multi-material casts incorporating both orange peel bioplastic and coffee grounds bioplastic are shown to exert a greater influence over the degree of curvature than either bioplastic alone, and skeletonized panels are shown to exhibit the same behavior as their solid counterparts. Potential developments of the technology so as to gain greater control of the curvature performance, particularly in the direction of computer-controlled additive manufacturing, are considered, as is the potential of application in architectural scale.

summary Microalgae are a sustainable source of unique properties with potential for various applications. Biofuel production has led to the use of them as bioreactors on an architectural scale. Most of these efforts cannot manage the output due to the lack of intelligent control and monitoring over environmental micro-scale growth. This research presents the possibility of control and monitoring over the bio-energy retrieved through micro-organisms in bio-reactors, specifically the growth environments computation. To achieve monitoring, three dimensions of the medium culture captured by cameras, and with the advantage of image processing, the picture frames pixel values measured. In this process, we use the Python OpenCV Library as an image processing reference. Finally, a specifically developed algorithm analyses the calculated 3d-matrix. By changing the environmental parameters, control happens by directly recognizing changes in density and outputs. This researchs computational process has proposed a novel approach for controlling particle-based environments to reach the desired functions of microorganisms, This approach can use in a wide range of cases as a method.

summary While textile composites offer a wide range of formal flexibilities, a primary concern is the cost and time of creating custom mold surfaces which are typically produced through subtractive digital fabrication techniques. Alternative methods such as adjustable molds are used in high-end sail-making, and architectural researchers have examined reconfigurable molds, fiber sandwich fabrication methods, and mold-free fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) fabrication processes. In this paper, we discuss the development of a digitally controlled mold system for complex-shaped textile composite panels, aiming to reduce the need for custom milled molds. Experimental research started with producing composite samples from computer-numerically-controlled (CNC) milled foam molds. Subsequently, a digitally controlled deformable mold prototype was developed which incorporates a digital interface through which the architect's surface geometry is entered, analyzed, and transferred. The digital geometry directly controls the position of vertical actuators which adjusts the mold surface. Results of this ongoing project outline a digital process for fabricating textile composite panels, and help to define key parameters of the adjustable mold system including material properties, mechanical controls of the mold surface, paneling considerations, and digital interface.

summary Compliant composites are a new approach to composite systems that leverage the semi-rigid properties of composite woven fabrics to create kinetic compliant mechanisms. Simple fabrication and economic actuation principles are proposed to transform planar fabrics into three-dimensional configurations without using expensive molds, instead, relying on the millimeter-scale mechanical interactions of woven composite fabrics. The relation between fabric type, weave, matrix, laminations, and localized reinforcement was studied to achieve repeatable, durable, and functional components that displayed instant transformations. Woven compliant mechanisms were patterned to create adjustable surfaces actuated uniaxially and biaxially producing different degrees of porosity. The kinetic response is generated without the use of complicated mechanisms by relying on material properties and smart geometries. Our system expands work on kinetic surfaces with the advantage of the ease of actuation and fabrication. These surfaces can be used in architectural applications such as facades, shading mechanisms, and interior partitions where performative qualities are desirable.

As part of this study, we have developed wood-based bio-composite materials that are 3D printed with wood filament. Shape-changing behavior is not predictable in advance. We developed customized 3D printing protocols to systematically study shape-changing behavior. The paper presents this systematic material study and the prototypes that we have developed.

summary Visual rules are powerful in loosely capturing the impact of material behavior on form in designer’s hands-on experimentation. They present a first step to translate the causal relations between material and form to computation without sacrificing the uncertainties in the designer’s interaction with the materials. This study investigates how to model the relation between material and form with visual rules so that the model embodies some of the phenomenological aspects of reality, rather than merely reproducing it.

summary The creators of ‘Let's-Improvise-Together’ adhere to the idea that while there is a multitude of online games now available in cyberspace, it appears that relatively few are focused on providing a positive, friendly and productive experience for the user. Producing this kind of experience is one the goals of our Amusement Project.To this end, the creation of ‘Let's Improvise Together’ has been guided by dedication to the importance of three themes:* the importance of cooperation,* the importance of creativity, and* the importance of emotion.Description of the GameThe avatar arrives in a certain area where there are many sound-blocks/objects. Or he may add sound "property" to existing ones. He can add new objects at will. Each object may represents a different sound, they do not have to though. The avatar walks around and chooses which objects he likes. Makes copies of these and add sounds or change the sounds on existing ones, then with all of the sound-blocks combined make his personalized "instrument". Now any player can make sounds on the instrument by approaching or bumping into a sound-block. The way that the avatar makes sounds on the instrument can vary. At the end of the improvising session, the ‘composition’ will be saved on the instrument site, along with the personalized instrument. In this way, each user of the Amusement Center will leave behind him a unique instrumental creation, that others who visit the Center later will be able to play on and listen to. The fully creative experience of making a new instrument can be obtained connecting to Active Worlds world ‘Amuse’ and ‘Amuse2’.Animated colorful sounding objects can be assembled by the user in the Virtual Environment as a sort of sounding instrument. We refrain here deliberately from using the word musical instrument, because the level of control we have on the sound in terms of rythm and melody, among other parameters, is very limited. It resembles instead, very closely, to the primitive instruments used by humans in some civilizations or to the experience made by children making sound out of ordinary objects. The dimension of cooperation is of paramount importance in the process of building and using the virtual sounding instrument. The instrument can be built on ones own effort but preferably by a team of cooperating users. The cooperation has as an important corolary: the sharing of the experience. The shared experience finds its permanence in the collective memory of the sounding instruments built. The sounding instrument can be seen also as a virtual sculpture, indeed this sculpture is a multimedial one. The objects have properties that ranges from video animation to sound to virtual physical properties like solidity. The role of the user representation in the Virtual World, called avatar, is important because it conveys, among other things, the user’s emotions. It is worth pointing out that the Avatar has no emotions on its own but it simply expresses the emotions of the user behind it. In a way it could be considered a sort of actor performing the script that the user gives it in real-time while playing.The other important element of the integration is related to the memory of the experience left by the user into the Virtual World. The new layout is explored and experienced. The layout is a permanent editable memory. The generative aspects of Let's improvise together are the following.The multi-media virtual sculpture left behind any participating avatar is not the creation of a single author/artist. The outcome of the sinergic interaction of various authors is not deterministic, nor predictable. The authors can indeed use generative algorythm in order to create the texture to be used on the objects. Usually, in our experience, the visitors of the Amuse worlds use shareware programs in order to generate their texture. In most cases the shareware programs are simple fractals generators. In principle, it is possible to generate also the shape of the object in a generative way. Taking into account the usual audience of our world, we expected visitors to use very simple algorythm that could generate shapes as .rwx files. Indeed, noone has attempted to do so insofar. As far as the music is concerned, the availability of shareware programs that allow simple generation of sounds sequences has made possible, for some users, to generate sounds sequences to be put in our world. In conclusion, the Let's improvise section of the Amuse worlds could be open for experimentation on generative art as a very simple entry point platform. We will be very happy to help anybody that for educational purposes would try to use our platform in order to create and exhibit generative forms of art.

summary In this paper the evolution of architectural composition teaching will be presented and discussed. The main point of these deliberations is to consider how digital methods and technologies have influenced the teaching methods and the understanding of compositional rules/principles by students. Another important factor which will be analysed, is the difficulties faced by teachers in the evaluation of students' work. The paper is divided into four parts, each of which concerns different approaches to architectural composition teaching. In the first part the historical background of architectural composition teaching is presented. In the second part traditional teaching methods is described, the third concerns teaching of digital architectural composition, and the fourth - digital architectural composition in virtual space. At the end of each section, the advantages and disadvantages of the discussed methods are presented. These disadvantages were a stimulus for changes in the teaching process, which was enabled thanks to the development of digital technologies (software and hardware) during the last 20 years. From this reflection, the problem arises of how to make the people appreciate the historic buildings. The Region of Medium High Uruguay, will serve as pilot study on a method of applying to the enhancement of national heritage by the population that is through the materialization of form. It is with the help of computer modeling combined with digital prototyping that seeks to find effective alternatives that use new technologies in the upgrading of historic buildings, a form of knowledge, integration and collaboration. In many areas of knowledge, consciousness makes the human being is connected to the world through all the senses. And touch, as experimentation and understanding of space it inhabits, may be the most overlooked sense in recent informatization times. In this research, the new realization techniques used to attempt to leverage awareness and understanding of a heritage, for a population hitherto alien to the cultural and historical values of a local architecture.

summary The formal education of future professionals requires training in four basic skills: abstraction, systemical thought, experimentation and collaboration. The capacity of abstraction allows to understand and manage realty in different ways in order to create opportunities to reinterpret and reorganize the information. The systemical thought promotes the distinction and the interpretation, teaching how they should be interpreted and how they can be refuted. They should learn how to analyze the reality from different points of view, under different conditions, which allows imagining new alternatives and possibilities. Through the experimentation we look for different possibilities and results and verify analogies and relevant differences, comparing with previous ideas. Another relevant aspect is the capacity of collaborating, sharing troubles and solutions, building new knowledge.

summary 3dm is a three dimensional (3D) surface modeling program that draws techniques of model manipulation from both CAD and drawing programs and applies them to modeling in an intuitive way. 3dm uses a head-mounted display (HMD) to simplify the problem of 3D model manipulation and understanding. A HMD places the user in the modeling space, making three dimensional relationships more understandable. As a result, 3dm is easy to learn how to use and encourages experimentation with model shapes.

title SOM’s Computer Group: Narratives of women in early architectural computing

summary Cultural narratives of digital technology in architecture rely heavily upon stories of unique, almost always male, genius and often deny the collective intellectual labor of technology’s construction. These narratives are perpetuated by a historical record which does not fully address the contributions of women to the history of digital technology. Because this history is not well-documented, there is an opportunity to represent these events in a manner which is more inclusive and equitable. Toward that end, this article focuses on narratives from the SOM Computing Group (1964–1990), as a means of correcting the historical record and addressing gender equity in the profession. The interviews collected here highlight several women who helped to integrate technologies into architecture through professional experimentation and cross-disciplinary collaboration. While it is not a comprehensive history, this work represents the beginning of an agenda to produce a history of technology in architecture which better reflects the contributions of women to the digital designs of today.

Moreover to realize a short analysis of this new paradigms establishes by digital media, Pix-me: hybrid of the human and machine, as an artistic pretension, get the signs of this new senses currented on cyberspace and bring it again to this place in a representive way of this context that we are living in. summary Our awareness of the earth's depleting resources has directed focus towards biomaterials, which can be extracted sustainably and biodegraded after use. Current fabrication of biomaterial structures is still restricted in strength and geometry, limiting its use in construction. This paper presents a novel two-phase multi-material fabrication process to create mycelium composite structures of higher porosity and complexity with speculated improvements in strength. First, cellulose pulp inoculated with mycelium is extruded. Then, each layer is filled by a secondary supporting material. This material, in the form of a gravel- and sand-slurry, acts as an inhospitable medium steering mycelial growth, additionally improving aeration to produce stronger structures. After an intermediate growth period, the secondary material, reusable in a closed-loop production model, is removed to reveal the fully-grown mycelium structure. The paper reports on each of the three aspects: the fabrication process, material experimentation of primary and secondary substrates, as well as geometry of varying porosity and performance.

summary This paper presents the development of the artistic installation Hybris, which proposes an immersive and participatory experience through the combination of ceramic masks, augmented reality, and projections. Hybris integrates those elements with people and space opening up new possibilities for socio-spatial interactions. By means of their interaction participants become aware of the virtualization of their bodies and also of the hybrid space, and engage in discussions regarding the world in constant acceleration and the new social, cultural, and spatial relationships that emerge from it. Drawing from the hybridisms proposed by the installation (the physical-digital, the real-fictional, and the organic-machinic) this paper discusses the possible relationships created between space, body, and reality, and their potential for experimentation and self-expression.
