summary Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) as an integrated field between architecture and sociology has created practical guidelines for evaluating indoor human behavior within a built environment. This research builds on recent attempts to integrate datafication and machine learning into POE practices that may one day assist Building Information Modeling (BIM) and multi-agent modeling. This research is based on two premises: 1) that the proliferation of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology allows us to collect a building user’s data cost-effectively and 2) that the growing application of machine learning algorithms allows us to process, analyze and synthesize data efficiently. This study illustrates that the mobile platform HalO can serve as a generic tool for datafication and automation of data analysis of the movement of a building user. In this research, the iOS mobile application HalO, combined with BLE beacons enable building providers (architects, developers, engineers and facility managers etc.) to collect the user’s indoor location data. Triangulation was used to pinpoint the user’s indoor positions, and k-means clustering was applied to classify users into different gathering groups. Through four research procedures—Design Intention Analysis, Data Collection, Data Storage and Data Analysis—the visualized and classified data helps building providers to better evaluate building performance, optimize building operations and improve the accuracy of simulations.

summary Alongside shifts in the technological landscape, the origin of creativity in architectural design has been consistently evolving. According to French philosopher Bernard Stiegler, the architectural design process is never individualistic but rather shaped by the complex interaction between human creativity and what he terms the “pre-individual milieu”, the synthesis of various factors such as cultural heritage, technological innovation (Stiegler, 2016). Over the last three decades, the emergence of digital technologies such as the Internet of Things, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence has significantly enhanced the dynamism and diversity of human–machine communication. With the advancement of digital technologies in the field of architecture, artificial intelligence, machine intelligence, and material intelligence are increasingly integrated into the creative process. In the form of hybrid intelligence, this shift expands the scope of architectural creativity and creative agency beyond the mere intelligent landscape of the human mind. As suggested by architectural theorist Antoine Picon, “another possibility is to consider the pairing of man and machine as a new composite subject……This proposition is suggested by various contemporary reflections on computer technologies and their anthropological dimension” (Picon, 2011).

summary Robotic Timber Construction has been widely researched in the last decade with remarkable advancements. While existing robotic timber construction technologies were mostly developed for specific tasks, integrated platforms aiming for industrialization has become a new trend. Through the integration of timber machining center and advanced robotics, this research tries to develop an advanced timber construction platform with multi-robot system. The Timber Construction Platform is designed as a combination of three parts: multi-robot system, sensing system, and control system. While equipped with basic functions of machining centers that allows multi-scale multifunctional timber components’ prefabrication, the platform also served as an experimental facility for innovative robotic timber construction techniques, and a service platform that integrates timber structure design and construction through real-time information collection and feedback. Thereby, this platform has the potential to be directly integrated into the timber construction industry, and contributes to a mass-customized mode of timber structures design and construction.

summary This research focuses on the transformation from design to fabrication without CAD models. In contrast to the conventional "design - modeling - fabrication" workflow, which involves multiple software, we experimented with a method of programming the bespoke fabrication process, and consequently defining the artifact. Algebraic models are employed to specify the materialization process carried out by various CNC machines. We used the programming language Java to create machine instructions for 3D printers, milling machines, and robots. In this method, design and production are not two separated processes; rather we regarded them as two aspects of one whole activity. Proficiency in machines and materials could contribute to design innovation.

summary This paper points out that “interaction” is not only a scientific issue but also a social-cultural issue. The relationship between the user experiences and the behaviours of the system should be emphasised. The “Individual-Intelligible” coordinate system is created to compare and evaluate the interactivity of various systems, it provides a new design space for researches or students experimenting with interactive systems. Four experiments are discussed with the new formulation of the interaction.

summary Computational design is apt to address all design problems in one model, though these problems usually originated from distinct models. The method of employing one model follows the problem-solving paradigm developed in the early years of CAAD. The paper argues that employing multiple models in one generative process is valid. Furthermore, it can be more productive than using single model. Two experimental programs are implemented. They suggest that each model could work without interrupting other models, thus multiple models can interplay in one design task.

summary Since 1960s there were many models for architectural layout planning which formulated design activities as problem-solving. On the other hand, various form-finding models had emerged after 1980s. The former seeks the necessity of architectural modeling as an objective science, while the latter encourages the contingent characters of individual modeling. This paper proposes a method of integrating the two families of models. A commutation channel is defined thus every member in one family can work with any member in the other. Therefore the models of architectural layouts can “multiple” the models of 3D forms, which leads to rich variety of architectural structures and forms. The method is implemented and tested in Java.

summary A multi-agent system (MAS) is efficient as it can emulate a variety of organisms in natural science due to the interactions between agents, which make artificial systems responsive and adaptive. In “Bamboo Workshop” involved flexible structures, MAS was employed to create virtual organism in computational environment towards an innovative process in installation design. A generative tool with friendly user interface was developed for both observation and intervention besides debugging. At the same time investigations were carried on the complex behaviours of the system through graphic statistics. Integrated with the generative tool, a construction system made up of bamboo materials was set up to build a series of mobile and flexible installations. This experiment suggests that the virtual organism has the potential for being a part of the design intelligence, beyond a mere digital tool.

summary Drawing inspiration from the variable density structures of bones and the self-supported cantilvers of corbelled brick arches, the Durotaxis Chair and the La Burbuja lamp explore a material-based design process by responding to the challenge of designing a 3D print, rather than 3D printing a design. As such, the fabrication method and materiality of 3D printing define the generative design constraints that inform the geometry of each. Both projects are seen as experiments in the design of 3D printed three-dimensional space packing structures that have been designed specifically for the machines by which they are manufactured. The geometry of each project has been carefully calibrated to capitalize on a selection of specific design opportunities enabled by the capabilities and constraints of additive manufacturing. The Durotaxis Chair is a half-scale prototype of a fully 3D printed multi-material rocking chair that is defined by a densely packed, variable density three-dimensional wire mesh that gradates in size, scale, density, color, and rigidity. Inspired by the variable density structure of bones, the design utilizes principal stress analysis, asymptotic stability, and ergonomics to drive the logics of the various gradient conditions. The La Burbuja Lamp is a full scale prototype for a zero-waste fully 3D printed pendant lamp. The geometric articulation of the project is defined by a cellular 3D space packing structure that is constrained to the angles of repose and back-spans required to produce un-supported 3D printing.

The integration of custom-designed elements, such as CNC-milled acoustic felt cladding and a feature wall derived from a CT scan of the human brain, serves to enhance the visual and tactile experiences of children with neurological disorders.

summary The "PURE Tension" Pavilion is a lightweight, rapidly deployable, tensioned membrane structure and portable charging station commissioned by Volvo Car Italia to showcase the new Volvo V60 Hybrid Electric Diesel car. Officially launched in Milan, Italy in October 2013, this experimental structure was developed through a process of rigorous research and development that investigated methods of associative modelling, dynamic mesh relaxation, geometric rationalization, solar incidence analysis, membrane panelling, and material performance. It is an experimental structure that, similar to a concept car, is a working prototype that speculates on the potential future of personal mobility and alternative energy sources for transportation while also exploring digital design methodologies and innovative structural solutions. This paper will illustrate the design, development and fabrication processes involved in realizing this structure.

summary Design collaboration relies on cognitive tools such as analog media and digital peripheral devices, and shows the characteristics of distributed cognition. It is a social and complex activity involving multiple agents communicating and using external cognitive tools to encode, decode, and share information in the process of collaborative task completion. The systems supporting this activity should meet the ’principle of least collaboration effort’ [4] that proposes that agents in collaboration minimize their effort in presentation and acceptance of information. Yet, current collaboration systems are dispersed mixed media that is often overloaded with representations and functionality, thus preventing seam- less information sharing. Designers are required to spend extra effort collecting information using peripheral devices and in system management when sharing information. The goal of this study is to understand these overheads in infor- mation collection and sharing using peripheral devices, and to provide designers with a supportive platform to enhance collaboration using both analog and digital media. In this paper, we first review available peripheral devices such as smart pens, digital cameras, and voice recorders, as well as existing collaboration sup- porting software systems for their benefits and deficiencies in collaboration. We then present ’DiNa’, a collaboration platform that is envisioned to improve pro- ductivity and reduce redundant work by integrating peripheral devices into the collaboration workflow. We demonstrate a possible workflow using this system through several scenarios where designers collaborate in performing a series of design tasks. We hope to bring attention to the importance least collaborative effort in designing systems to support real-world collaboration.

summary With the use of the concept Central Activities Zone in the Shanghai City Master Plan (2017-2035) to replace the traditional concept of Central Business District, core areas such as Shanghai Lujiazui will be given more connotations in the future construction and development. In the context of todays continuous urbanization and high-speed capital flow, how to identify the development status and vitality characteristics is a prerequisite for creating a high-quality Central Activities Zone. Taking Shanghai Lujiazui sub-district etc. as an example, the vitality value of weekday and weekend as well as 19 indexes including density of functional facilities and building morphology is quantified by obtaining multi-source big data. Meanwhile, the correlation between various indexes and the vitality characteristics of the Central Activities Zone are tried to summarize in this paper. Finally, a neural network regression model is built to bridge the design scheme and vitality values to realize the prediction of the vitality of the Central Activities Zone. The data analysis method proposed in this paper is versatile and efficient, and can be well integrated into the urban big data platform and the City Information Modeling, and provides reliable reference suggestions for the real-time evaluation of future urban construction.
