summary The paper describes the application of non-linear structural analysis methods to address archaeological questions concerning the reconstruction of the ancient city of Pompeii after a major earthquake that occurred seventeen years prior to the famous eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. It presents preliminary findings in an effort to develop an approach to modeling the two-way out-of-plane behavior of unreinforced masonry walls, including comparison studies with published analytic and experimental results for one-way loaded walls, plus a trial analysis for a two-way span condition. The approach requires the application of computationally intensive non-linear analysis techniques, since the linear analysis methods used in conventional design and education are inadequate to model the behavior of unreinforced masonry. Developing an understanding of the two-way behavior of unreinforced masonry has implications not only for archaeological investigation of ancient structures, but also for modern renovation of historic structures.

summary We employ the possibilities of parametric modeling software andcustomized mass production machinery to develop a design for adaptablemultifunctional temporary medium size buildings made from recyclable lightweight materials and built a prototype from cardboard. We developed agrasshopper script that controls the geometry of a self-supporting arc made from a folded plane. The project is conducted as an experimental design-and-build university course that familiarizes students with parametric thinking and designing and with carrying out a project from initial concepts through tobuilding a 1:1 prototype. This project is part of an ongoing series of investigative design & build courses integrating current design possibilities and construction methods.

summary Ephemeral art, post-autonomus, unruly, out of the frame or undefined, are the categories which characterize the visual arts today. In that context, we address as case study the work of the Argentinian visual artist Abel Monasterolo. Along with the analysis of their work, we propose an urban intervention in "Ciudad Universitaria", within the framework of SIGRADI 2011. It consists to perform a frieze from the point, the line and the plane. It proposes a visual narrative of "the big bang of artistic creation". This narrative incorporates experiences of augmented culture, like a palimpsest, paradigmatic works of design history. It also includes a scanned self-portrait of the artist. The work of art has a performative character and offers the spectator to participate in strategic moments of the artistic discourse.

title Interweaving Grammar: Reconfiguring Vernacular Structure Through Parametric Shape Grammar

summary This paper re-examines the interweaving method to demonstrate how architectural computation can reinterpret the advantages of this traditional crafting techniques for its geometrical compatibility and rule generativity. Firstly, the technique analyzes and reconfigures load distribution of a traditional interwoven surface to mimic its structural principle. Secondly, from this structural reconfiguration, the study applies parametric shape grammar to define interweaving rules. The rules generate various patterns with rigid local materials that fit the size of human hand. The experiment in this study shows that interweaving grammar can generate ornamental-structural components with three different load distributions, three different segmented materials and in three different spatial dimensions (point, line and plane).

summary This paper describes the beginning of a project called TEAR_AD: Network for Teaching and Learning Technology in the areas of Architecture and Design. Such project aims to support the problem of Professors, Lecturers, and students lack of knowledge about a whole set of technologies that can turn a project more precise and responsive in terms of constructibility, sustainability and general performance. They have problems in keeping updated about those technologies and, in consequence, do not apply them in their practices. In order to explain the strategic plane of the project, that consists in the first part of the Garrett Methodology for Experience Design, the identification of Personas, representing the target public, the use of the benchmarking to identify possible features to be used in the system, and so on, are described. Considerations about how to pursue the implementation and maintenance of the designed system are outlined.

summary This article deals with a new idea for generating plane representation figures of three dimensional objects and describes a corresponding computer program. Instead of using the classical perspective rules that govern retinal images as well as common cameras, a different projection method is elaborated based upon the use of a particular kind of curved projection rays instead of the usual straight ones. Curvature of projection lines is made depending on an index variable between zero and one. Meanwhile conical and parallel classical images are obtained for the limit values, compromise images result with intermediate values. Fundamentals, analytical procedure and program for displaying images are presented. Finally, examples are shown and the development possibility of a new type of camera with the property of producing pictures according to different indexes is raised

title Drawing as Transformation: From Primary Geometry to Secondary Geometry

summary A distinction is made between primary geometry, the arrangement in space of lines of projection from a 3-D object to a plane of projection, and secondary geometry, the relationships between the points, lines and shapes of the drawn projection on a 2-D surface. Drawing projection systems, such as those classified under British Standard 1192, are illustrated, and are shown to be defined in terms of primary geometry. It is argued that a re-classification of projection systems in terms of secondary geometry enables first-year students of drawing to relate more easily such systems of geometry to their observational experiences. Student drawings illustrate the argument.

summary Considering plane tessellation as a creative trigger that contributes to modular form design, a procedure to group 2D shapes and architectural 3D forms is developed. The particular case studied in this article is about Penrose tilings, which tessellate no-periodically, admitting a covering of the plane without using a constant distance repetition pattern. Procedures and rules for geometric generation and fractalization are analyzed. A technique to generate aperiodic tilings is proposed, so they will be used as a geometric precise support for the insertion of architectural objects that follow predetermined dimensional patterns, looking for constructive standardization without restricting diversity of cases. Using digital techniques, linear and central structures of groupings are analyzed. Both typologies are exemplified in various abstraction levels.

summary This thesis presents work in the development of computational descriptions of Gehry’s architectural forms. In Gehry’s process for realizing buildings, computation serves as an intermediary agent for the integration of design intent with the geometric logics of fabrication and construction. This agenda for digital representation of both formal and operational intentions, in the context of an ongoing exploration of challenging geometries, has provided new roles for computation in architectural practice. The work described in this thesis focuses on the digital representation of surface geometry and its capacity for describing the constructibility of building enclosure systems. A particular class of paper surface forms – curved surfaces with minimal in plane deformation of the surface material – provide the specific object of inquiry for exploring the relationships between form, geometry and constructibility. An analysis and framework for the description of Gehry’s geometry is developed through existing theory of differential geometry and topology. Geometric rules of constructibility associated with several enclosure system strategies are presented in this framework. With this theoretical framework in place, the discussion turns to efforts to develop generative strategies for the rationalization of surface forms into constructible configurations.

summary This paper presented 3D dynamic models representing two fundamental methods in descriptive geometry changing planes and revolution. The objective is to display the true size of the objects analyzed in 3D space and their adjacent views. Despite the relevance of the topics in descriptive geometry, these are contents that students struggle to consolidate. Thus, it has happened because the widely applied resources in the teaching-learning process do not support the procedures required to understand them. To fulfill this demand, we built 3D dynamic models regarding the line changing planes and the plane revolution in GeoGebra. After creating the models, a survey questionnaire was sent to specialists, for accessing and evaluating. As a result, the answers indicated that the 3D dynamic models conveyed the information regarding descriptive methods effectively. Additionally, above 60% of the participants intend to adopt the dynamic models in their classes.

summary This thesis investigates a new representation scheme for geometric modeling, based on an algebraic model for shapes and formalized using a boundary representation. The algebraic model is mathematically uniform for shapes of all kinds and provides a natural and intuitive framework for mixed-dimensional shapes. The corresponding maximal element representation is essential to the concept of shape emergence. The representation scheme particularly supports computational design as a generative process of search or exploration. This thesis begins with a treatment of the algebraic and geometric properties of shapes and gives a formal and complete definition of the maximal element representation for n-dimensional shapes in a k-dimensional space (n ? k). Efficient algorithms are presented for the algebraic operations of sum, product, difference and symmetric difference on shapes of plane and volume segments. An exploration of related research in shape grammars, computational design and construction simulation, illustrates the potential of this representation scheme, while an agenda for future research depicts its present shortcomings.

title Spatial Schemata and Design Competence: A Case of Beginning Designers

summary In the course of learning professional skills in architectural design, students will develop, usually with the help of instructors, certain ways of analyzing spatial relations. Such spatial schemes are considered critical means to the comprehension of the graphical representations of spaces, and therefore schemes of different kind will have different effects on design performance. This study intends to explore this issue. Three sets of experiments are conducted to test our working hypotheses as stated as follows: (i) to reproduce a plane graphic requires knowledge and skills different from those to recognize; (ii) some schemes are more effective than others in reproducing plane graphics; (iii) the kind of schemes that can effectively reproducing given forms (in plane graphics) can also have positive effects on design capabilities. It is interesting to further differenti-ate the kinds of schemes and their power as design tools. All these experiments employ three kinds of spatial schemes: the categorical, the referential, and the hierarchical from the results we can reach the following conclusions: (i) reconstruction is a different mental activity from recognition which is mainly a comparison between the input data and the known characteristics reconstruction relies more on the structured relations among data that should be established in the course of recognition. Therefore, effective cognition is a part of design competence; (ii) categori-cal schema is found most effective in recognition test. The quality of this type has to do with the quality of its contents. Referential schema can effectively relate elements to one another and to the context in which they are located. This schema contributes to the quality of spatial compositions. Hierarchical schemata are more general that can help identify dependent relations among elements, and therefore reduce the complexity. Conceivably this can increase the efficiency of problem-solving in design.

The primary focus of this work centers on exploring a design solution for an ephemeral, self-sustaining structure known as "camelódromo," with an inherent emphasis on the replicability of its elements. summary The research presented in this paper investigates ways of providing better design applications for technologies in the field of Urban Digital Media (UDM). The work takes an emergent approach, evolving a design strategy through the early engagement of stakeholders. The paper discusses research in a design-led creative intersection between media technology, culture and the arts in the built environment. The case study discusses opportunities for the enhancement of a university campus experience, learning culture and community, through the provision of an integrated digital presence within campus architecture and urban spaces. It considers types of information architecture (Manovich, 2001) and designs for use in urban settings to create communication-rich, advanced and interactive designed spaces (Haeusler, 2009). The presented research investigates how to create a strategy for display technologies and networked communications to transform and augment the constructed reality of the built environment, allowing new formats of media activity.

summary This paper explores the juxtaposition between architectonic space and virtual environments. It establishes the hypothesis that the intersection of virtual environments with our common life causes a break-up of time and space. Virtual environments are the last and most integral part of the technological revolution, becoming a parallel world, an unlimited extension of our limited world. The spatial and temporal juxtaposition of these two realities creates a new reality of being “inbetween”, it reveals the “inter-media”. This “inter-media” reality is an issue for architecture of our time, and it still lacks of responses.

summary Concurrent engineering is a design strategy in which various designers participate in a co-ordinated parallel process. In this process series of functions are simultaneously integrated into a common form. Processes of this type ask for the identification, definition and specification of relatively independent design fields. They also ask for specific design knowledge designers should master in order to participate in these processes. The paper presents a conceptual model of co-ordinated parallel design processes in which architectural space is simultaneously defined in the intersection of three systems: a morphological or level-bound system, a functional or domain-bound system and a procedural or phase-bound system. Design strategies for concurrent engineering are concerned with process design, a design task which is comparable to the design of objects. For successfully accomplishing this task, knowledge is needed of the structural properties of objects and systems; more specifically of the morphological, functional and procedural levels which condition the design fields from which these objects emerge, of the series of generic forms which condition their appearance and of the typological knowledge which conditions their coherence in the overall process.
