summary A material system can be defined as a set of self-organized materials, defining a certain spatial arrangement. In architecture, this material arrangement acts as a threshold for space, though space often only appears as a by-product of the material organization. Treating space as a resulting, therefore secondary, independent product minimizes the capacity to generate architecture that is astutely aware of concerns of functionality, environment and energy. An effective arrangement of material can only be determined in relation to the spaces that it defines. When proposing a more critical approach, a material system can be seen as an intimate inter-connection and reciprocal exchange between the material construct and the spatial conditions. It is necessary to re-define material system as a system that coevolves spatial and material configurations through analysis of the resultant whole, in a process of integration and evaluation. ¶ With this understanding of material system comes an expansion in the number of criteria that are simultaneously engaged in the evolution of the design. The material characteristics, as well as the spatial components and forces (external and internal), are pressures onto the arrangement of material and space. ¶ This brings a high degree of complexity to the process. Biological systems are built on methods that resolve complex interactions through sets of simple yet extensible rules. Evolutionary Developmental Biology explains how growth is an interconnected process of external forces registering fitness into a fixed catalogue of morphological genetic tools. Translating the specific framework for biological growth into computational processes, allows the pursuit of an architecture that is fully informed by the interaction of space and material.

title Reframing “intelligence” in computational design environments

summary This paper seeks to establish a set of principals that form an understanding of intelligent systems related to design and architecture, through a review of intelligence as it has been understood over the last 60 years since Alan Turing first asked the question “can machines think?”1 From this review, principals of intelligence can be identified within the neurophysiological and artificial intelligence (AI) communities that provide a foundation for understanding intelligence in computational architecture and design systems. Through critiquing these principals, it is possible to re-frame a productive general theory of intelligent systems that can be applied to specific design processes, while simultaneously distinguishing the goals of design oriented intelligent systems from those goals of general Artificial Intelligence research.

summary The problem of filling a given volume with a 3-dimensional structural network lattice comprising a certain number of nodes is considered. The proposed method of approach is contained within the framework of iterative physical dynamic simulation and implements a generative algorithm that features a particle-spring system. The algorithm is able to suitably arrange nodes in the space of a volumetric envelope and establish connections between them through local rules of self-organisation, thus producing efficient space frames without having prior knowledge of either geometry or topology of the network lattice.

title Gulliver in the land of Generative Design

summary The current trend in architectural design towards architectural computing has been treated both from a philosophical standing point and as an operational systems’ problem, in a quest for explications which could at last break ground for a more broad development and adoption of design tools. As Kostas Terzidis (2007) puts it, the intuitiveness that architects have put on so high a pedestal seems to be the central issue to be dealt with by both views. There seems to be no apparent shortcut toward the reconciliation between traditional practice and new media and most certainly it is not only a problem of interface design, but one of design method clarification and reinterpretation of those methods into computing systems. Furthermore, there’s no doubt left as to whether computing systems can generate such new patterns as to impact our own understanding of architecture. But even if computer algorithms can make possible the exploration of abstract alternatives to an abstract initial idea, as in Mathematica and Processing, the issue of relating abstract and geometric representations of human centered architecture lays in the hands of architects, programmers or, better yet, architect-programmers. What seems now to be the relevant change is that architectural design might escape from the traditional sequence embedded in the need – program – design iterations – solution timeline, substituted by a web of interactions among differing experimental paths, in which even the identification of needs is to be informed by computing. It is interesting to note that the computational approach to architectural design has been praised for the formal fluidity of bubbles and Bezier shapes it entails and for the overcoming of functionalist and serialization typical of modern architecture. That approach betrays a high degree of canonic fascination with the tools of the trade and very little connection to the day to day chores of building design. On the other hand, shall our new tools and toys open up new ways of thinking and designing our built landscape? What educational issues surface if we are to foster wider use of the existing technologies and simultaneously address the need to overtake mass construction? Is mass customization the answer for the dead end modern architecture has led us to? Can we let go the humanist approach begun in Renascence and culminated in Modernism or shall we review that approach in view of algorithmic architecture? Let us step back in time to 1726 when Swift’s ‘Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World by Lemuel Gulliver’ was first published. In Swift’s fierce critic of what seemed to him the most outrageous ideas, he conceived a strange machine devised to automatically write books and poetry, in much the same generative fashion that now, three centuries later, we begin to cherish. “Every one knew how laborious the usual method is of attaining to arts and sciences; whereas by his contrivance, the most ignorant person at a reasonable charge, and with a little bodily labour, may write books in philosophy, poetry, politicks, law, mathematics and theology, without the least assistance from genius or study. He then led me to the frame, about the sides whereof all his pupils stood in ranks. It was twenty foot square, placed in the middle of the room. The superficies was composed of several bits of wood, about the bigness of a dye, but some larger than others. They were all linked together by slender wires. These bits of wood were covered on every square with paper pasted on them; and, on these papers were written all the words of their language in their several moods, tenses, and declensions, but without any order. The professor then desired me to observe, for he was going to set his engine at work. The pupils at his command took each of them hold of an iron handle, whereof there were forty fixed round the edges of the frame; and giving them a sudden turn, the whole disposition of words was entirely changed. He then commanded six and thirty of the lads to read the several lines softly as they appeared upon the frame; and where they found three or four words together that might make part of a sentence, they dictated to the four remaining boys who were scribes. This work was repeated three or four times, and at every turn the engine was so contrived, that the words shifted into new places, as the square bits of wood moved upside down.” (Jonathan Swift, Gulliver’s Travels, A Voyage to Balnibarbi) What astonishing forecast did Swift show in that narrative that, in spite of the underlying incredulity and irony, still clarifies our surprise when faced to what might seem to some of us just an abandonment of all that architects and designers have cherished: creativeness and inventiveness. Yet, we could argue that such a radical shift in paradigm occurred once when master builders left the construction ground and took seat at drafting boards. The whole body of design and construction knowledge was split into what now seem to us just specialties undertaken by more and more isolated professionals. That shift entailed new forms of representation and prediction which now each and all architects take for granted. Also, Cartesian space representation turned out to be the main instrument for professional practice, even if one can argue that it is not more than the unfolding of stone carving techniques that master builders and guilds were so fond of. Enter computing and all its unfolding, i.e. DNA coding, fractal geometry, generative computing, nonlinear dynamics, pattern generation and cellular automata, as a whole new chapter in science, and compare that to conical perspective, descriptive and analytical geometry and calculus, and an image begins to form, delineating a separation between architect and digital designer. In previous works, we have tried approaching the issues regarding architects education in a more consensual way. But it seems now that the whole curricular corpus might be changed as well. The very foundations upon which we prepare future professionals shall change, not only in College, but in High School as well. In this paper, we delve further into the disconnect between current curricula and digital design practices and suggest new disciplinary grounds for a new architectural education.

summary Many Islamic geometric patterns consist of stripes which are recognizable in the two dimensional patterns. These stripes systematically pass over or under each other, thus they create a tessellation. This system has the same principle with reciprocal frame structures. Considering this situation, in this study, it is aimed to lift the two dimensional Islamic geometric patterns to the third dimension with the principle of reciprocal frame structures. A selected Islamic geometric pattern has been lifted to the third dimension in the reciprocal structure principle, and structural analyzes have been performed.

summary This paper presents the design process of a recently built, 107 m2 free-form timber frame canopy. The structure is an irregular, funnel-shaped reciprocal frame resting on a central concrete column, and has been fabricated using a robot-based assembly process. The project addresses several known design and fabrication challenges: modelling of free-form reciprocal frames, complex interrelations between their geometry and structural behaviour, as well as develops custom software tools to represent different models and interface design and structural analysis environments. The performance-driven design is exemplified by studies on the relationship between geometric parameters of the reciprocal frame and the resulting force-flow and flexural stiffness of the structure. The final design is obtained by differentiating geometry and stiffness to reduce deflection and tensile stresses while observing fabrication constraints.The project demonstrates the application of computational design to create customized, performance-driven and robotically fabricated structures, and its successful realization validates the methods under real-life planning and construction conditions.

summary Reciprocal Frame Structures (RF) have broad application potentials. Flexible to using small available materials, they span large areas, including varied curvature and doubly-curved forms. Although not many buildings using RF have been constructed to date, records indicate RF efficiencies where timber was widely used in structures predating modern construction. For reasons of adaptability and economy, advances in computation and fabrication precipitated increase in research into RF structures as a contemporary architectural typology. One can observe that linear timber such as rods and bars feature in extensive RF research. However, interest in planar RF has only recently emerged in research. Hence one can argue that planar RF provides depth to explore new design possibilities. This paper contributes to the growing knowledge of planar RF by presenting a design project that demonstrates an approach in notching systems to explore design and structural performance. The design project, the developed design workflow, fabrication, assembly and evaluation are discussed in this paper.

summary Every city has under utilized spaces that create a series of serious negative effects. Waiting for major interventions, those spaces can be reactivated and revitalized with soft temporary projects: micro interventions that light up the attention, give new meaning and add a new reading to abandoned spaces. We can call this kind of operations "plug-in design", inheriting the term from computer architecture: interventions which aim to involve the citizens and activate the environment, engage multiple catalyst processes and civil actions. Plug-in design interventions are by all meanings experimental, they seek for interaction with the users, locally and globally. Information Technology - with its parametric and site-specific capabilities and interactive features - can be instrumental to create such designs and generate a new consciousness of the existing environment. With this paper we will illustrate how two low-budget interventions have re-activated a forgotten public space. Parametric design with a specific script allowing site-specific design, materials and structure optimization and a series of interactive features, will be presented through Reciprocal 1.0 and Reciprocal 2.0 projects which have been built in 2016 in Italy by the nITro group.

summary Reciprocal Frame (RF) is a constructive system typically applied with timber, since it is composed by discrete elements with short dimensions. It allows the construction of large spans and complex geometries. This kind of structure has been addressed by recent research projects that aim to produce it using computational tools and digital fabrication techniques. Moreover, the enhancement of these technologies enabled the integration of simulations of biological processes into the design process as a way to obtain better and optimal results, which is known as Biomimetics. This paper describes the development of a spatial structure that combines the principles of RF and the assembly process of natural agents, such as birds, in a digital environment. The tools used for the generation of the structure were Rhinoceros, Grasshopper and different add-ons, such as Culebra, Kangaroo, Pufferfish and Weaverbird.

summary Material Swarm Articulations, is an experiment in developing a multi-objective optimization system that incorporates bottom up approaches for informing architectural design. The paper presents an initial built project that demonstrates the combination of a structural form finding method, with an agent based design system through the digital fabrication processes. The objective of this research is to develop a workflow combined with material and construction constraints that has the potential to increase performance objectives while enabling geometric complexity and design driven articulation of a traditional tectonic system. The emphasis of the research at this stage is to take advantage of material properties and assembly methods applied to a digital design and simulation workflow that enables emergent patterns to influence the performance of the space.The paper illustrates the research through a prototype of a self standing canopy structure in 1:1 scale. It presents results of the form finding, generative patterning, digital fabrication affordances and sets and agenda for next steps in the use of multi-agent systems for design purposes.

summary In a reciprocal frame structure, at any given joint, there are only two members connecting to each other. Therefore, the joints in a standard reciprocal structure are topologically identical. Due to these topological similarities between the joints, the parametric modeling of a reciprocal frame structure applied to a geometrically regular surface, such as domes and symmetric shells, is practical, and it has been explored in several projects previously. In this context, this paper presents an integrated computational design to robotic production process of a free form wooden pavilion with a non-uniform tessellation pattern with differentiated cell sizes. The case study, on the one hand, elaborates on the challenges of solving reciprocal tessellation on complex geometries, and on the other hand, discusses the chosen and developed robotic production approach as a feedback loop that informs the design process.

summary The paper concerns the issue of constructing flat vaults from elements topologically interlocking inspired by the Abeille blocks. One of the new ideas that are presented is constructing the vaults in an order opposite to the one considered untill now. The problem of static response on the thrust force, significant for flat vaults, is usually solved by the use of the perimeter frame, added only after arranging all the elements of the vault. The paper presents how to arrange the vault inside a previously made frame thanks to application of special components divided into parts, which are inserted at the end and play the same role as a keystone in a stone arch. The other new concept is shaping vaults based on equilateral triangles and regular hexagons, from hexagonal, romboidal and triangular elements shaped and arranged in a manner similar to the one used for shaping square vaults. The last innovative concept presented in a paper concerns shaping the perimeter frame from the components providing stiffness of the frame only due to topological interlocking. All presented ideas have been analised purely at a geometric level.

summary This article aims to reflect on pedagogical practices after the “Great Reset” for architecture and urbanism course´s freshman. The experience was held in the cities of Joao Pessoa and Sao Paulo using common instruments, reciprocal beam kits made with digital fabrication, with the purpose of redefining pedagogical procedures through dynamic representation for in-person practices. The performative methodology was adopted to integrate representation and construction contents since they are dissociated in the curriculum. The results demonstrate an appraisal for the use of the body as knowledge applied to representation, construction, and use of space, allowing for variation in spatial formats, time, and number of participants. The use of kits as a pedagogical resource might increase the complexity of topics and subjects covered in exercises, as well as strengthen the use of digital fabrication to democratize access to knowledge.

summary Though highly robust and economical, traditional lamella and reciprocal structural systems cannot adapt to surfaces with complex double curvature; as the timber members are standardized with no variation. Recent research has explored the use of computation for design, structural optimization, and use of robotic systems for the automated fabrication of timber joints. The disconnection between fabrication and assembly makes the construction of non-uniform double-curved reciprocal frames challenging, due to the required precise placement of discrete members with compound angle butt joints. This project investigates the use of robotic fabrication to cut and assemble a timber reciprocal frame assembly. A computational model was created to generate the double-curved reciprocal frame geometry. Within this computational framework, joint analysis, fabrication, and assembly were monitored and adjusted to meet limiting factors. An industrial robot was implemented as a bridge between the computational model and the physical construction. This paper presents a number of novel computational and robotic fabrication techniques in designing, cutting, and positioning. These techniques were explored through the robotic fabrication and assembly of a demonstrator - a double-curved reciprocal frame wall.

summary The Energy Puppet is an ambient display device that provides peripheral awareness of energy consumption for individual home appliances. The display produces different “pet-like” behavioral reactions according to energy use patterns of the appliances to give homeowners an indication of their energy consumption status. The puppet would raise its “arms” in victory to display normal consumption rate, or its “eyes” would change color to red and “roar” to warn the homeowners when the specific appliance reaches dangerously high consumption rates. The assumption is that the awareness of energy consumption could affect how people consume and control energy use in their households. This paper describes the usage scenarios and the design and implementation of Energy Puppet and discusses future research directions.

summary This work invests on delimitation of a Geometric Modeling study program directed to students at the initial stages of Architecture. It is considered that the studies promote a qualified control of the form based on recognition of parameters which define it, moreover it also allows the enlargement of the students geometric vocabulary, important to the architectural design activities. In this way, the program advances on the appropriation of new concepts which surround the investigations on architectural design processes, such as the concept of shape grammar. Observing analysis and architectural composition practices based on such concept, contents of geometric modeling which are already being used in the context of post-graduation are identified to be transposed to the graduation context, along with the initial teaching practices of architectural design. The results refer to making the didactic material available, these materials have the objective of building references for the development of design practice which explore the reflection about the processes of creation and composition of architectural form in their geometric aspects.

summary The aim of this paper is to explore how new technological opportunities affect approaches of designers during collaborative architectural design process. Which factors affect the communication and the quality of interaction? The study is based on two phases: the data input by the designer via devices to the computer environment and the transformation of data into design product in the software by scripting addition. Input devices that are used are 3D mouse, graphic tablet as a tangible interface and implementation of second mouse besides a standard mouse and keyboard. The potential usage of these interfaces in collaborative architectural design process is discussed and proposals are developed in 3ds max scripting environment.

summary This paper proposes a framework for an integrated computational design system. This design system builds on the strengths inherent in both generative synthesis models and multi-performance analysis and optimization. Four main design mechanisms and their mathematical models are discussed and their integration proposed. The process of building the design system begins by a top-down decomposition of a design concept. The different disciplines involved are decomposed into modules that simulate the respective design mechanisms. Subsequently through a bottom-up approach, the design modules are connected into a data flow network that includes clusters and subsystems. This network forms the Generative Multi-Performance Design System. This integrated system acts as a holistic structured functional unit that searches the design space for satisfactory solutions. The proposed design system is domain independent. Its potential will be demonstrated through a pilot project in which a multi-performance space planning problem is considered. The results are then discussed and analyzed.
