summary When spaces are evaluated, clients and architects often discuss design proposals by looking down at scale models. This overhead perspective forces viewers to imagine themselves looking and moving about within the model. Misperceptions may well result from such a point of view. With the advancement in virtual reality (VR) technology, and with its rising popularity in architecture, it is becoming plausible to consider using VR to evaluate design projects.

The projects presented here are of three types: (1.) The first project compares people's evaluation of several slightly modified virtual models of a space. (2.) The second project compares how people evaluate a foam core model of a space to how they evaluate a virtual representation of the same space (3.) The third project compares people's evaluation of a real space to that of a virtual representation of this space. //

The wide range of results presented provides one argument in support of using VR simulations to study spaces and how they are perceived. For example, results shows that a virtual window serves to alleviate perceived crowding and that added furniture serves to make a virtual room feel slightly larger and less constraining. However, problems did emerge with using virtual reality simulations to gain information about peoples' behavioral reactions to a space. Thus, not all circumstances under which VR representations are used creates valid results. Differences appear to be in the type of evaluations measured (e.g. dimensional versus behavioral). More research is needed to clarify this issue.

summary We will analyze a pedagogic exercise that joined together both the Informatics and Morphology Courses, required in the second year of Architecture School. The objective of the analysis is to explore the possibilities of the computer as a tool for design, and also to contribute some ideas for planning, curriculum development, and the necessary training to introduce the use of computer graphics in the Architecture School. We based our analysis on some preliminary hypotheses: (1) Students must learn to use digital models with a certain degree of simultaneity with learning design and the other techniques used to develop models. (2) Professors of Design, Representation, and Morphology are main actors in this learning process; they do not have to become experts in informatics, but have some understanding of the topic. (3) Many universities and professional associations are offering students and professionals courses based in the use of programs, instead of addressing their real needs.

summary This research project implements a multimodal body-centric approach to interactive fabrication aimed to test the conversational aspects of a design framework (Figure 1). It focuses on the development of a gesture language as the primary mode of commu- nication, as well as the means to generate effective communication with a machine for design endeavors. To do so, we first developed a gesture recognition system that aims to establish fluid communication with a machine based on three types of gestures: symbolic, exploratory, and sequential. Second, we developed a system for machine vision to detect, recognize, and calculate physical objects in space. Third, we developed a system for robotic motion using path-planning algorithms and reinforcement learning for colli- sion-free machine movement. Finally, those three modules were integrated into a system for human-robot interaction in real time based on gestures. The ultimate goal of this imple- mentation is to establish a multimodal framework for interactive design that is based on human-robotic interaction through the use of gestures as a communication mechanism for exploring computational design potential toward unique and original creations.

summary In this paper, I present a human-machine, collaborative, 3D modeling system that combines human gestures with generative 3D modeling. The project seeks to explore the unfolding of design ideas while reframing the concept of design workflows, knowledge encapsulation, disembodiment, and representation in 3D CAD processes. Using machine learning and interactive computation, this project links user sketches to generative 3D modeling using a sequence-to-sequence model. By encapsulating expert knowledge related to 3D modeling, this project seeks to eliminate intermediate representations, such as, sections, elevations, and floorplans, in the design process to engender immediate, real-time, 3D model generation from hand sketches (Figure 1). Whereas, most of the projects using generative machine learning to produce 3D models focus on the one-to-one fidelity between sketches and 3D models, this research focuses on the generative power of gesture sequences to generate novel 3D models. This experiment aims to answer, among others, the following questions: Can the use of machine learning reframe the generation of 3D models in a more embodied way? Is it possible to capture design inten- tions from sketches to generate 3D shapes using machine learning? Can we design and explore ideas inside a computer without representing them, but focusing on the unique sequences that originate novel designs?

Aiming the discussion and aplicabillity of the algoritghmic design it was created a workshop titled “Introduction to parametric design”, for graduate and pos graduate students at the Federal University of Santa Catarina. In this workshop was explored the aplicabilities of the parametric design in the field of academic research, ending with the use of digital fabrication methods.

summary Evaluating and deciding on design alternatives is a collaborative activity involving design teams and other design stakeholders in the Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. Current tools for design offer limited support for data-informed collaborative decision-making and fall short of encouraging discussions. In a user study with eight domain experts, we investigated how a meaningful data-informed collaboration can be enabled in design through interactive visualizations of design alternatives. We argue that receiving feedback from the design stakeholders as annotations directly on data representations can improve design decision-making. The initial results from our study reveal extensive needs for multi-target coordinated annotations, sorting, and organizing annotations, and agility in creating and accessing annotations. We propose a set of high-level interactions and requirements for coordinated annotation for engaging in collaborative decision-making.

summary The article presents and discusses the experience of a workshop held online in 2020 as part of the DigitalFUTURES event. The proposal found its starting point in the register of a world in the midst of a pandemic crisis. The general objective of the workshop was the construction of a design thinking capable of acting on the domestic by means of a disobedience projected towards a possible future. In this framework, digital disobedience became an exercise in critically questioning certain ambiguities of digital interfaces in their everyday omnipresence. By adopting a decolonial sight on design through an epistemology from the South, it was possible to achieve at alternative figurations of futures. These figurations led to the design of a series of futuristic domestic devices capable of exploring disobedient scenarios of domestic dwelling.

summary This paper demonstrates the process of generation of physical paper models from digital models of curved surfaces through the digital technique for approximately flattening. A collection of these models, based on works of architecture, is being produced as a didactic activity within a discipline of graphic and digital geometry in the curriculum of architecture. The study allowed the identification of parameters to improve the process of generating such models and recognize the kirigami technique as an alternative for the representation of non-developable rectilinearsurfaces, previously not included for the generation of physical models in the didactic activities in question.

summary This paper describes a process of identifying a taxonomy for describing learning materials made available in the context of a Virtual Learning Environment for Architecture and Design and produced by partner groups coming from different institutions. Paying attention to the specificity of the knowledge structure conveyed in such materials, exemplified in the case study of the digital graphic representation material, the importance of seeking by different terminologies combining concepts, techniques and technologies involved in different approaches to the same subject was observed, by allowing to characterize the structure of the teaching material and, through relationships among its terms, identify the connection between other learning objects for architectural design.

summary Creating architectural form requires much more than a moment of inspiration; it requires understanding form in its whole structure. In teaching architecture aiming for the architectural design a group of strategies is needed to prepare students for the creative process. In this process it begins with issues such as the geometry allows the students redeem their prior knowledge. This paper compares, in two different contexts of the initial stages of architectural teaching process, the results of activities of digital graphic representation of architectural structures. These activities are supported by the analysis of shape grammar in promoting the learning process in a comprehensive manner such as suggested by Wertheimer.

summary In order to provide a range of complex forms, justifiable to be selected in different aspects, the present work developed and evaluated a parametric and generative algorithm that allows to create diversified geometric options. The development of this work occurred in four stages, initially with the collection of information in the areas of architecture, parametric design and tools. Then the algorithm was developed with the aid of visual programming software. After, the geometric result was recreated in a physical model. Finally, we verified the potentialities of the use of the algorithm, and the use of a generative method.

summary We report on a method that has been tested to produce the working drawings for site communication of the architectural project. The advantage of using such a method is that it allows improving the architect’s control over design while maintaining the traditional role of drawings; at the end, it will be possible the delivering of a flexible set of information more suitable to the building needs. This work is part of larger efforts to investigate the conventional methods that architects use to communicate their ideas to the builder and the potential of information technologies for partially automating this process. The research described in this paper was developed at LNEC. Funds were granted by FCT, under a Portuguese program for promoting scientific research within architecture and urbanism (PRAXIS XXI/2/2.1).

summary As architectural design projects tend to tackle larger scales and become more complex, multiple involved actors often need to work from different remote locations. This increased complexity impacts the digital design-to-fabrication workflows that become more challenging, as each actor involved in a project operates on different software environments and needs to access precise fabrication data of specific design components. Consequently, managing and keeping track of design changes throughout the design-to-fabrication workflow still remains a challenge for all actors involved. This paper discusses how this challenge can be tackled through both Speckle, a complete open source data platform for the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC), and SpeckleViz, a custom web-based interactive Activity Network Diagram (AND) built upon Speckle. SpeckleViz continuously maps data transfers across design and building processes, enabling the end-users to explore, interact and get a better understanding of the constantly evolving digital design workflows. This is demonstrated in this paper through a computational design and digital fabrication workshop conducted at the Centro de Estudios Superiores de Diseño de Monterrey (CEDIM), during which an integrative, file-less collaborative design workflow has been set through Speckle, connecting different Rhino-Grasshopper sessions acting as discrete computational design pipelines.
