This paper highlights the advantages of employing digital tools in tight collaboration with academics and professionals at the early stages of the design process and revisits ancient architectural design strategies to arrive at more meaningful and sustainable architectural interventions.

summary The paper proposes integrated design and building systems for the provision of sustainable customized housing. It advances previous work by applying a methodology to generate these systems from vernacular precedents. The methodology is based on the use of shape grammars to derive and encode a contemporary system from the precedents. The combined set of rules can be applied to generate housing solutions tailored to specific user and site contexts. The provision of housing to shelter the population affected by the 2010 Haiti earthquake illustrates the application of the methodology. A computer implementation is currently under development in C# using the BIM platform provided by Revit. The world experiences a sharp increase in population and a strong urbanization process. These phenomena call for the development of effective means to solve the resulting housing deficit. The response of the informal sector to the problem, which relies mainly on handcrafted processes, has resulted in an increase of urban slums in many of the big cities, which lack sanitary and spatial conditions. The formal sector has produced monotonous environments based on the idea of mass production that one size fits all, which fails to meet individual and cultural needs. We propose an alternative approach in which mass customization is used to produce planed environments that possess qualities found in historical settlements. Mass customization, a new paradigm emerging due to the technological developments of the last decades, combines the economy of scale of mass production and the aesthetics and functional qualities of customization. Mass customization of housing is defined as the provision of houses that respond to the context in which they are built. The conceptual model for the mass customization of housing used departs from the idea of a housing type, which is the combined result of three systems (Habraken, 1988) -- spatial, building system, and stylistic -- and it includes a design system, a production system, and a computer system (Duarte, 2001). In previous work, this conceptual model was tested by developing a computer system for existing design and building systems (Benr__s and Duarte, 2009). The current work advances it by developing new and original design, building, and computer systems for a particular context. The urgent need to build fast in the aftermath of catastrophes quite often overrides any cultural concerns. As a result, the shelters provided in such circumstances are indistinct and impersonal. However, taking individual and cultural aspects into account might lead to a better identification of the population with their new environment, thereby minimizing the rupture caused in their lives. As the methodology to develop new housing systems is based on the idea of architectural precedents, choosing existing vernacular housing as a precedent permits the incorporation of cultural aspects and facilitates an identification of people with the new housing. In the Haiti case study, we chose as a precedent a housetype called “gingerbread houses”, which includes a wide range of houses from wealthy to very humble ones. Although the proposed design system was inspired by these houses, it was decided to adopt a contemporary take. The methodology to devise the new type was based on two ideas: precedents and transformations in design. In architecture, the use of precedents provides designers with typical solutions for particular problems and it constitutes a departing point for a new design. In our case, the precedent is an existing housetype. It has been shown (Duarte, 2001) that a particular housetype can be encoded by a shape grammar (Stiny, 1980) forming a design system. Studies in shape grammars have shown that the evolution of one style into another can be described as the transformation of one shape grammar into another (Knight, 1994). The used methodology departs takes off from these ideas and it comprises the following steps (Duarte, 2008): (1) Selection of precedents, (2) Derivation of an archetype; (3) Listing of rules; (4) Derivation of designs; (5) Cataloguing of solutions; (6) Derivation of tailored solution.

By integrating a community of users in virtual worlds into a collaborative architectural design process, organisations can tap the community’s creativity and intelligence through immersive technology. The paper provides an overview of the latest advances of information and communication technologies in immersive virtual environments and discusses some of the observations and lessons learned which should be taken into account in developing collaboration models for such activities. Here we propose four modes of collaboration, based on the choices for degree of openness and governance structure, which are illustrated by four case studies.

title Contemporary Digital Methods for the Geometric Documentation of Churches in Cyprus

summary Recent advances in digital methods incorporating information technology have enabled the traditional surveyor and monument recorder to work faster, more accurately and in an automated way in order to produce advanced digital products, more versatile and more useful to the end users. Such methods include tacheometry, digital photogrammetry, as image-based method, terrestrial laser scanning and the development of specialized software in order to fully exploit the digital data acquisition. Usually, a combination of these methods gives the most efficient cost benefit results, by providing 2D vector and raster products and 3D textured models. In this paper two examples of the implementation of these methods in the geometric documentation of two churches, both significant for the history of Cyprus, are presented. It is concerned with the churches of Virgin Mary (Panayia) Podithou, in Galata and St. George Nikoxylitis in Droushia. The applied methodology, using classical and contemporary techniques of commercial and in-house developed software is presented. Comparative tests for the achieved accuracies and the completeness of each method's products have been made, and their merits and usefulness are explained.

summary In sustainable urban development the first stage of the urban design process should consist of a pre-design phase where the context of the site is analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. In this paper we present a methodology for data mining an urban Geographic Information System (GIS) data set, consisting of three main phases: representation, analysis and description. The process reveals a series of block and street typologies at various levels of detail that highlight the different character of two neighbourhoods. This methodology is demanding in the preparation phase and requires a high level of GIS and statistics expertise in the analysis phase. However, it successfully addresses the complex multi-scale and multi-level nature of cities in a systematic way, providing a tool for systematic profiling of neighbourhoods, which is site and problem specific.

summary In the last two decades, the digital age Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) development and concerns combined with rapid technology have permitted the dissemination of different digital applications (including digital documentation, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), digital gaming, and holograms etc.) oriented toward past, present and future communication using digital three-dimensional audio-visual content. Today, we must acknowledge that 3D virtual 3D reconstruction and recreation has become an established way to build, understand, reinterpret, and promote Cultural Heritage (CH). The virtual 3D reconstruction world and multimedia industry are often considered potential marketing channels for World Heritage Sites (WHS) and heritage tourism. 3D digital/virtual reconstruction merges and embodies subjectivity in one process, playing an attractive role in heritage tourism destinations and creating image experiences, providing the first enjoyable interpretation and information for most audiences. Based on the EU-funded iHERITAGE project ICT Mediterranean platform for the UNESCO CH, this paper attempts to examine some insights into constructing the optimistic image of heritage promotion and tourism in the context of CH as it flows through both physical and virtual spaces to give a glimpse of the future of virtual reconstruction. It illustrates the development of the concepts and practice, challenges and opportunities, advantages and disadvantages, and the negative and the positive sides of the related issues of only 3D digital reconstructions, and some issues concerning the ethics based on the International Chartres and Conventions mainly in the field of scientific visualisation, such as the London Charter (2009) and Seville Principles (2011). Finally, as a practical dimension, it presents some representative examples of 3D digital/virtual reconstruction of characteristic monuments of the WHS of Nabataean Petra in Jordan for the first time.

title Monitoring Archaeological Site Landscapes in Cyprus using Multi-temporal Atmospheric Corrected Image Data

summary This paper aims to examine the use of satellite remote sensing for monitoring archaeological and more generally cultural heritage sites. For this purpose, multi-temporal data from Landsat 5 TM, Landsat 7 ETM+ and Quickbird images were applied. The paper also discusses the importance of atmospheric correction at the pre-processing step in order to determine true surface reflectance values by removing these effects from satellite images. Atmospheric correction is arguably the most important part of the pre-processing of satellite remotely sensed data and any omission produces erroneous results. The effects of the atmosphere are more severe where dark targets are shown in the satellite image. In the management of cultural heritage sites, since temporal satellite images are required for monitoring purposes, the effect of the atmosphere must be considered. In-situ spectro-radiometric measurements using the GER1500 field spectro-radiometer have been used to assess the reflectance values found after applying the darkest pixel atmospheric correction to the image data. The study area consist the Amathus archaeological site in Limassol and the Nea Paphos archaeological site area located in Paphos district area in Cyprus. Vegetation Index (NDVI) change detection algorithm has been applied to a series of thirteen Landsat TM/ETM+ images of Amathus archaeological site in Limassol. Classification and extraction algorithms have been applied to Landsat TM and Quickbird high resolution images of Nea Paphos archaeological site area.

These projects did not start with traditional representation conventions (front view, plan and cross section) but with biological, geometrical or mathematical references, where patterns are recurrent. Using scripts it is possible to write and represent possibilities; blogs allow the publication of the results. In this context, a blog was created (2008) to publish methods and subjects extracted from workshops and manuals featuring rhinoscripting. During a year more than 57000 users accessed; the results of this documentation are hereby presented.

Intermediate spaces between housing and the city (the ground floor and the free space between the house and the street) become mediating mechanism between the individual and collective life, hence, urban tissue catalysts. New technologies get inserted in this intermediate scale through locutorios (premise offering public telephones and Internet connection), key spaces in social life.This scale between the house and the city allows proximity, accessibility, appropriation and identity, and shows rhe capacity of intermediate scale to absorve urban transformations.

title Wearable Personal Assistants for the Management of Historical Centers

summary One of the main tasks facing the manager of a historical centre is to avoid degradation while retaining the historical value. For this reason, any intervention which takes place on the environment, should be carefully managed. Only when performing a proper diagnosis of the environment and its reality is possible to follow a high quality intervention. The integration of new information technologies has been crucial to the improvement of these processes providing new tools. Within the project called RASMAP, we have designed and implemented a mobile augmented reality platform based on a service oriented architecture. This project introduces the concept of Wearable Personal Assistant (WPA). WPA in the RASMAP platform represents an innovative wearable tool, which provides support to professionals in their daily activities (mechanical engineer, safety responsible person, diagnosis expert, etc.). This tool is based on augmented reality technologies, mobile devices and communication infrastructures. The development of the platform for the WPAs implies addressing several technological challenges: a) to overcome the limitations inherent in the mobile devices: speed, capacity of memory, capacity of storage, graphical features and others, b) to obtain tracking systems that they do not need to alter or to adapt the environment, c) to optimize for the transmission and reproduction of multimedia contents through wireless networks on mobile devices. In this article, we describe the RASMAP platform, as a basis for the development of WPA and the extension of its use for the management of historical centres. The quality and usefulness of the scientific-technological results provided by the WPA have been validated developing a demonstrator for the diagnosis of the conservation status of the historical centre of a small town in the Basque Country. The advantages to be gained by using WPA in the proposed scenario are among others: more efficient processes, improved communication between users, and local and distributed multimedia content records.

title Using the FBS ontology to capture semantic design information in design protocol studies

summary This chapter presents a method to capture semantic information from design protocols. We report on a preliminary study that analyses a design protocol by using the FBS ontology and derives processes within this ontological framework by employing linkography. The usefulness of this method is examined by applying it to the Engineering 1 protocol (E1) as a case study. The original 1990 FBS ontology captures 66% meaningful processes of all the derived processes, while the situated FBS ontology captures 92% meaningful processes of all the derived processes. Further coding analysis may improve this percentage. The session is characterized, according to the ontology, by the high percentage of behaviour reformulation, followed by structure reformulation, and analysis.

summary This paper introduces a VR city model developed for driving simulation. The project is a part of interdisciplinary multi-year academic research grant. First, the outline of the research is explained. The process of VR city modeling is then introduced. The modeling process of creating road and intersection networks and traffic flow is explained. The system integration with a PC, modeling and VR software, and a Drive Simulator is illustrated. A case study of driving through the city with different traffic amounts using the simulator is analyzed. Computational tools to extract driving behavior data and future endeavors are discussed.

The research demonstrates the potential of this tool, through the analysis of contemporary projects such as the “Memorial da America Latina” of Oscar Niemeyer, with modeling of the structure in ANSYS.

summary The ultimate goal of the project in which the described research evolves is a computer-platform for assisting in the development of urban design proposals at the site planning scale including formulation, generation, and evaluation modules. The paper is concerned with the development of a common ontology that guarantees inter-operability among the three modules. After clarifying the theoretical framework, it describes the methodology used to develop the proposed Urban Design Ontology (UDO), as well as its lexicon, syntax, and semantics. It is argued that such ontology constitutes the bases for a City Information Model (CIM) that permits to elaborate consistent and comprehensive descriptions of urban spaces, thereby enabling the formulation of programs for urban interventions and the generation of corresponding design proposals.

summary This study describes the morphological urban order underlying Portuguese treatises and Portuguese urban cartographic representation produced from 16th century to 18th century. The historical documentation suggests that Pythagorean-Euclidian geometry appears to be a crucial ingredient for the understanding of Portuguese urban design-thinking and urban design-making. To unveil the genesis of the morphological urban order present in the Portuguese colonial plans of the eighteenth century, a descriptive method, Shape Grammar has been adopted. Shape Grammar, as method, supports the analysis of the form-making logic and has proved to be powerful in shape analysis, description, interpretation, classification, evaluation and generation of a design language.

title A Design Interaction Tool That Adapts

summary Despite different computerised approaches have been hardwired to solve various complex practical problems; few are founded on an adaptive paradigm such that a computational model interacts with its environment, loosely wires itself and learns from experience like humans do. This book presents our attempt to craft a computational model that learns from interactions and adapts based on its experience. We draw ideas from cognitive psychology in relation to human experiential learning, particularly the notions of ?situatedness?, ?constructive memory? and ?concept formation?. When applied to design activities, which are intrinsically dynamic and interactive, this model constructs concepts from interactions between the agent, the design problem and the use of the design tool. Such a design interaction tool generates knowledge based on the agent?s grounded generalisation from contextual information in a situated manner. Adaptive behaviours emerge from coupled interactions of the system from a macroscopic and a microscopic level. This book is suitable for researchers and students interested in pursuing computerised approaches based on cognitive science and natural computing.
