summary People are aware of objects in physical spaces to which they may act responsively. We are interested in human behavioral changes in the presence of reactive displays in shared environments. In a limited 2-week field study, using plants (both natural and artificial) as reactive displays, we observed human trash disposal/recycling behavior. We found that there is a significant increase in recycling (p=0.08) when there are reactive display with natural plants. We also noticed increase in recycling with displays with artificial plants. These findings suggest that people can and do alter their behavior in shared environments, and that such behavioral changes can be effected by the use of reactive/responsive information displays.

summary This paper examines a novel, integrated and collaborative approach to design and fabrication, enabled through Mixed Reality. In a bespoke fabrication process, the design is controlled and altered by users in holographic space, through a custom, multi-modal interface. Users input is live-streamed and channeled to 3D modelling environment,on-demand robotic fabrication and AR-guided assembly. The Holographic Interface is aimed at promoting man-machine collaboration. A bespoke pipeline translates hand gestures and audio into CAD and numeric fabrication. This enables non-professional participants engage with a plethora of novel technology. The feasibility of Mixed Reality for architectural workflow was tested through an interactive installation for the makeCity Berlin 2018 festival. Participants experienced with on-demand design, fabrication an AR-guided assembly. summary A column is an archetypal constituent of architecture which historically underwent constant reiteration in accordance with the prevalent architectural style, material culture or technical and structural possibilities. The project reimagined this architectural element through harnessing the synergies of digital design, textile logic, and contemporary biotechnology. Textile materiality and aesthetic are deeply rooted in architectural history as a soft and ephemeral antipode to rigid building materials. An investigation in historic mechanical hand-knitting techniques allowed to extract their underlying structural and geometric logic to develop a structural optimisation pipeline with a graded yarn as a base material and a geometric optimization based on local distribution of knitting patterns. Bacterially driven biocalcification was applied to transform the soft textile structure into a rigid material. Hereby an active textile microbiome was established through colonizing of the yarn with the bacterium S. pasteurii which successively precipitated calcite on microscale within the textile substrate hence ultimately influencing the global structural behaviour of the column.

This system is able to acquire images with sufficient resolution for Architectural Photogrammetry. Geometric and topologic information for a CAAD-System can be derived with manual and/or semi-automated methods. This paper describes the current status of such a system which is under development at the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry in cooperation with the Chair of Architecture and CAAD, both at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.

summary The lunar base is not only an experimental station for extraterrestrial space exploration but also a dwelling for humans performing this exploration. Building a lunar base presents numerous obstacles and requires environmental perception, feedback design, and construction methods. An integrated fabrication process that incorporates design, 3D printing workflow, and construction details to build a bionic, reconfigurable and high-performance lunar base prototype is presented in this paper. The research comprises the study of the lunar regolith 3D printing mechanism, the real-time control of powder laying and compaction procedure, and the development of a 3D printing tool end system. In this paper, many scientific questions regarding in situ fabrication on the lunar surface are raised and addressed with the proposal of a progressive optimization design method, the molding principle, and gradation strategy of lunar soil-polyaryletherketone (PAEK) hybrid powder, and the principle of dual-light field 3D laser printing. The feasibility of the technical strategy proposed in this paper is verified by the presented empirical samples.

summary Researchers have previously explored 3D printing 2D shapes on stretched fabrics using plastic filaments. When released, the 3D printed plastic constrains the fabric to take a 3D form. By leveraging the material properties and resultant tension between the rigid plastic and pliable fabric, it is possible to create 3D forms which would otherwise be difficult to construct with traditional fabrication techniques. Multiple factors are in play in this shape-change. Therefore, it is often difficult to anticipate the 3D form that will emerge when the stretched fabric is released. In this paper, we present our systematic bottom-up explorations on the effects of various parameters on shape-change and formalize our findings as rules. These rules help to visualize the interrelations between (abstract) shapes designed for 3D printing, (material) shapes 3D printed on stretched fabric, and (material) shapes that emerge when the fabric is released. The rules also help to explore design possibilities with this technique in a more controlled, communicable, and repeatable way. We also present a series of vaulted forms that we generated using these rules and by stretching - 3D printing - releasing the fabric.

summary The MIT Design Studio of the Future is an interdisciplinary effort to focus on geographically distributed electronic design and work group collaboration issues. The physical elements of this virtual studio comprise networked computer and videoconferencing connections among electronic design studios at MIT in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Architecture and Planning, Mechanical Engineering, the Lab for Computer Science, and the Rapid Prototyping Lab, with WAN and other electronic connections to industry partners and sponsors to take advantage of non-local expertise and to introduce real design and construction and manufacturing problems into the equation. This prototype collaborative design network is known as StudioNet. The project is looking at aspects of the design process to determine how advanced technologies impact the process. The first experiment within the electronic studio setting was the "virtual design review", wherein jurors for the final design review were located in geographically distributed sites. The video captures the results of that project, as does a paper recently published in the journal Architectural Research Quarterly (Cambridge, UK; Vol. 1, No. 2; Dec. 1995).

summary Parameterization has shown potential in creating architectural projects and verification steps. The objective is to develop a parametric and generative tool, containing the urban parameters of the Master Plan of a municipality, to assist in the phase of field study. The model is developed with the aid of Revit software and Dynamo plug-in. The results converge to a tool where users enter the lot’s dimensions and zoning, and it applies the other parameters. It is possible to analyze the constructive potential quickly, avoiding errors. The parameterization process is emphasized, encouraging the user to apply new methodologies in early project stages.

A web-based demonstration application is illustrated in the paper in which we discuss two propositions about CAAD research discovered in the process of our investigations.

summary This paper addresses ergonomic drawbacks in NASA’s modular Multi-Mission Space Exploration Vehicle’s (MMSEV) latest prototype, 2B’s nosecone, to propose new iteration based on considerations such as mass minimization, visibility maximization, and structural integrity. With 2B as a benchmark, and using computational tools typically used in the AEC industry to carry out FEA analysis, comparisons are made with potential design changes. The numerical and visual data such as weight, and stress distribution, provided by the benchmark analysis, served as metrics for comparison and redesign. In turn, this design development exercise attempts to bring together the different design approaches to design, held by human- factors designers and structural engineers.

summary The exploding functionality of current computer-aided engineering (CAE) systems has provided today’s users with a vast, but under-utilized collection of tools and options. For example, MicroStation, a popular CAE system sold by Intergraph, offers more than 1000 commands including 16 ways to construct a line (in different contexts) and 28 ways to manipulate elements using a “fence”. This complex array of functionalities is bewildering and hardly exploited to its full extent even by frequent, experienced users. In a recent site visit to a federal design office, we observed ten architects and three draftsmen using MicroStation.

title Designs Conducive to the Use of Efficient Strategies

summary Studies on the widespread inefficient use of complex computer applications have suggested that users need to learn efficient strategies in addition to learning how to use tools. This paper argues that our growing understanding of strategic knowledge can be used to guide designers develop systems which are conducive to the use of efficient strategies. The paper first describes ten general strategies which appear to be useful across three computer application domains. Next, the paper discusses the functionalities required to execute the ten strategies, and what makes them conducive to strategy use. An analysis of six major computer applications in three domains reveals that these functionalities are not consistently offered, and how their absence directly affects the performance of complex tasks. The analysis leads to questions related to the generality of the results, the problem of featurism, and how strategy-conducive systems could facilitate the transfer of knowledge across applications. The paper concludes by briefly describing how we intend to use the strategy framework to develop analysis methods for designers and trainers.

summary Throughout history, inefficient methods to use devices have been replaced by more efficient ones. This shift typically occurs when users discover how to &legate work to the powers of a tool, and to circumvent its liiitations. Strategies of delegation and circumvention, therefore, appear to be the core of efficient use. To show how this approach can expiain the relationship between tools and strategies in complex computer systems, we describe five ways to perform a real-world drawing task with current as well as 5.rture tools. We then present five corresponding GOMS models that demonstrate the value of efficient strategies when compared to the observed behavior of a professional CAD user. We conclude by presenting a generalized framework to characterize efficient strategies and discuss its relevance to design and training.

title The Strategic Use of Complex Computer Systems

summary Several studies show that despite experience, many users with basic command knowledge do not progress to an efficient use of complex computer applications. These studies suggest that knowledge of tasks and knowledge of tools are insufficient to lead users to become efficient. To address this problem, we argue that users also need to learn strategies in the intermediate layers of knowledge lying between tasks and tools. These strategies are (a) efficient because they exploit specific powers of computers, (b) difficult to acquire because they are suggested by neither tasks nor tools, and (c) general in nature having wide applicability. The above characteristics are first demonstrated in the context of aggregation strategies that exploit the iterative power of computers.Acognitive analysis of a real-world task reveals that even though such aggregation strategies can have large effects on task time, errors, and on the quality of the final product, they are not often used by even experienced users. We identify other strategies beyond aggregation that can be efficient and useful across computer applications and show how they were used to develop a new approach to training with promising results.We conclude by suggesting that a systematic analysis of strategies in the intermediate layers of knowledge can lead not only to more effective ways to design training but also to more principled approaches to design systems. These advances should lead users to make more efficient use of complex computer systems.
