title Double Loops Parametric Design of Surface Steel Structure Based on Performance and Fabrication
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2020.1.023
source D. Holzer, W. Nakapan, A. Globa, I. Koh (eds.), RE: Anthropocene, Design in the Age of Humans - Proceedings of the 25th CAADRIA Conference - Volume 1, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, 5-6 August 2020, pp. 23-33
summary In intelligent epoch, automatic parameter design systems reduce the requirements of the skills needed to create objects. The creator only needs to select the most perceptual primitive form to automatically generate the data system that iterates to the most efficient solution. In this paper, a method of combining performance driven optimization with parametric design is proposed. The iterative evolution is under the control of performance loop and fabrication loop, which makes all the data provided by parametric design in a practical project available for exploring structural analysis and digital prefabrication. Related to the case of surface steel structure, parametric optimization is not limited to a set of shape types or design problems, it would be based on the generality and built-in characteristics of parametric modelling environment in the most convenient and flexible way. (Rolvink et al. 2010)And the given parameters would be fed back on geometric structure, performance indicators, and design variables, so that designers can easily and effectively coordinate and try different solutions. The system transforms the generated data into machine language so that the process including design, analysis, manufacturing, and construction can maintain the orthogonal persistence of the data.

title Exploring Visual Factors Influencing Women’s Perceived Insecurity in Metro Stations and Adjacent Built Environments: A Case Study of Milan, Italy
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2024.2.385
source Nicole Gardner, Christiane M. Herr, Likai Wang, Hirano Toshiki, Sumbul Ahmad Khan (eds.), ACCELERATED DESIGN - Proceedings of the 29th CAADRIA Conference, Singapore, 20-26 April 2024, Volume 2, pp. 385–394
summary Prior research has established a direct correlation between women's perceived insecurity in public spaces and the design of the surrounding built environment. However, limited attention has been given to investigating how the built environment influences women's security perceptions within metro systems. This study introduces a novel methodology to analyze the impact of visual factors on the entire walking experience within commuter cores, covering both the station and surrounding areas in Milan Metro Line 1. Both Street View Imagery (SVI) and manual photography are employed for semantic segmentation analysis, followed by expert auditing and machine learning for evaluation. Finally, the study constructs regression models to analyze the relationship between the area ratio of visual factors and women’s perceptions. The results demonstrate that certain factors, such as wider platforms and sidewalks, can positively influence women's safety perceptions in the surrounding and interior spaces, respectively. The models could be used to dissect Milan's other metro stations and their surroundings, offering insights applicable to other metro lines. Moreover, the methodology presents serves as a framework for investigating analogous concerns in diverse cities and delving into the experiences of other marginal groups.

title From Physiology to Architecture - The methodology for interactive architecture behavior design
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2021.1.195
source Stojakovic, V and Tepavcevic, B (eds.), Towards a new, configurable architecture - Proceedings of the 39th eCAADe Conference - Volume 1, University of Novi Sad, Novi Sad, Serbia, 8-10 September 2021, pp. 195-204
summary Interactive architectural design is a booming topic in current architectural research, which requires thinking about how to realize buildings provide various spatial services according to users' needs. In the human-building interaction (HBI) design, the architectural behavior design plays as one of the most relevant and essential parts of architectural space design. HBI design requires the establishment of a standard behavioral language system for architecture and people. Therefore, this paper proposes that the design of architectural behavior can mimic human behavior at the physiological level, thus making it easier for people to understand the behavior of architecture. The paper systematically analyzes the design methods and design routes to build muscular and glandular systems for architecture through some case studies.

title Recognizing Emergent Subshapes in Design Problem Solving: A Connectionist Investigation
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.acadia.1993.131
source Education and Practice: The Critical Interface [ACADIA Conference Proceedings / ISBN 1-880250-02-0] Texas (Texas / USA) 1993, pp. 131-139
summary Human problem-solving behavior has been modelled as a search through the space as defined as problem states, within which earlier states move to subsequent ones by applying rules in the human mind until the goal state is found. This cognitive model of problem-solving has been broadly accepted and has become dominant in both cognitive psychology and artificial intelligence (AI). In the field of computeraided architectural design (CAAD), search models are also widely used for solving design problems, although various foci of design knowledge are differently represented by shape grammars, graphs, and knowledge-based systems using predicate logic for different purports.

In design search, design evolves from one state to another by exhaustively or heuristically applying proper rules. Each rule application involves, first, pattern-matching the antecedent of a rule to the current state and, second, transforming the matched portion of that state into the consequence of the rule. However pattern-matching techniques of current CAAD systems are still limited. In current CAAD systems, only those two squares can be dealt with by patternmatching for further development. However, a human designer can effortlessly recognize not only those two but other emergent subshapes, for example a smaller square in the middle where the two squares overlap and two L-shapes in the corners. Therefore a human designer can thoroughly deliberate all these alternatives before making a decision. In other words, human designer is capable of restructuring shapes in terms of emergent subshapes in any step of designing.

title A Connectionist Approach to Shape Recognition and Transformation
source CAAD Futures ‘93 [Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-444-89922-7] (Pittsburgh / USA), 1993, pp. 19-36
summary In human design processes, many drawings of shapes remain incomplete or are executed inaccurately. Cognitively, a designer is able to discern these anomalous shapes, whereas current CAAD systems fail to recognize them properly so that CAAD systems are unable to match left-hand-side conditions of shape rules. More unfortunately, as a result, current CAAD systems fail to retrieve right-hand-side actions. In this paper, multi-layered neural networks are constructed to solve the recognition and transformation of ill-processed shapes in the light of recent advances of connectionism in cognitive psychology and artificial intelligence.

source Emerging Experience in Past, Present and Future of Digital Architecture, Proceedings of the 20th International Conference of the Association for Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2015) / Daegu 20-22 May 2015, pp. 407-416
summary Architectural survey is an evolving field in architecture that has been affected during the past decades by the technological advancements in the field of 3D data acquisition. Data acquired from laser scanning and photogrammetry, for the purposes of documentation can be integrated in the BIM data base of the project and contribute as the first stage in the sustainable process of building reuse and retrofit and for an appropriate design intervention for a building under preservation. This paper presents the case study of the documentation and design intervention of a building under preservation in Ramat Gan, Israel. All phases of the design process were integrated into a comprehensive BIM data base: the digital documentation of the building, through laser scanning and photogrammetry, the architectural geometry, the structural information, the HVAC and electrical planning. This case-study demonstrates how the compilation of the various phases in a BIM database facilitated a smooth workflow in a complicated project under preservation, allowed for an immediate coordination between the various consultants and resulted in a non-invasive design intervention.

summary This study aims to develop the application and exploration of digital manufacturing technology in the design of textile composite materials in the digital fabrication. The inspiration for this study comes from the folds of mushrooms and resulting caps. In nature, many organisms grow flexible bodies as structural systems instead of relying on hard bones. This raises the question of whether soft textile materials can also have the potential to serve as structural support materials. Research is divided into three parts. The first part aims to understand the application of non-woven fabrics in the construction field, and examine the manufacturing and reprocessing methods of composite materials. The second part aims to establish the logic of form finding and shape optimization. The third part is the design and manufacturing stage. This research not only establishes a digital fabrication work-flow based on composite fabric materials but also develops a large-scale self-supporting structure as a verification of this process.

title Use of Cadastral Data for the Development of Spatial Decision Support Systemsfor Coping with the Consequences of Natural Disasters
source Timmermans, Harry (Ed.), Sixth Design and Decision Support Systems in Architecture and Urban Planning - Part two: Urban Planning Proceedings Avegoor, the Netherlands), 2002
summary This paper investigates the potential usefulness of cadastral data to form the core part of databases of Spatial Decision Support Systems [SDSS] that are capable to support decision-makers in dealing with emergency situations, such as earthquakes, floods and fires. Particular emphasis is given on how those data can be used to generate information that is necessary to planners and decision-makers when they cope with natural disasters at every stage of the development of the disaster: before the occurrence (planning and preventive measures), immediately after occurrence (short term measures), and well-after occurrence (medium and long term measures). This investigation is conducted using the Municipality of Magoula, Attica, Greece, as a case study area. This municipality is situated in the greater Athens area and was struck by the earthquake that occurred there in September 1999. Within the scope of the project, wehave used cadastral data about the study area and data recorded by the inspection teams in order to set-up a prototype SDSS database that could facilitate planning and decision-making in such a situation. Then, we have used that prototype to generate scenarios and information about typical tasks that are performed during emergency situations. The advantages that are realized from the integration of such data and information technologies are described and assessed, particularly, in comparison with the traditional approaches that are used in such situations.

summary Computer assistants to building process management are not able nowadays to efficiently work out the problems generated by the increased complexity of designing. Actual difficulties depend, on one hand, on the fact D.B.M.S. that have been developed on other environments than CAAD, and on the other hand, on the fact that architectural design process is scarcely formalized. At the Department of T.E.C.A., at the University of Rome, a PhD research program is aimed to overcome difficulties, working out techniques of information management based on Knowledge Engineering and particularly on Knowledge Base Management Systems and Expert Database Systems. At present a prototype system is being developed, that can manage existing technical information, connected with buiIding process.

summary Research investigating water-driven passive actuation demonstrates the potential to transform how buildings interact with their environment while avoiding the complications of conventionally powered actuation. Previous experiments evidence the possibilities of bi-layer materials (Reichert, Menges, and Correa 2015; Correa et al. 2015) and mechanical assemblies with discretely connected actuating members (Gupta et al. 2019). By leveraging changes in weather to power actuated building components these projects explore the use of smart biomaterials and responsive building systems. Though promising the implementation of these technologies requires deep engagement into material synthesis and fabrication. This paper presents the design and prototyping of a rain responsive façade system using chitosan hygroscopic films as actuators counterbalanced by programmed compliant mechanisms. Building on previous work into chitosan film assemblies this research focuses on the development of compliant mechanisms as a means of controlling movement without over-complicated rotating parts.

title Team design from the individual points of viewa humanistic approach
source Timmermans, Harry (Ed.), Fifth Design and Decision Support Systems in Architecture and Urban Planning - Part one: Architecture Proceedings (Nijkerk, the Netherlands)
summary This paper deals with design in teams from the individual points of view of all the parties involved in the process: principals, investors, owners, specialists, experts, advisors, officials, builders, users and residents. Taken together, these different points of view enable us to describe decentralised design in its pure form.Discussion of the individual points of view is possible only if one assumes that the parties involved have their own standpoints in the form of a collection of definable goals (all their wishes, efforts, principles, standards etc.), that they will endeavour to achieve those goals and that they will adjust their actions and decisions during the design process to serve those goals. For the elaboration of this individual point of view (of team design in a matrix structure) I shall take as a basis two concepts from decision theory: ‘methodological individualism’ and ‘the actor’s viewpoint’.

summary This paper introduces the notion of transient materialization through an exploration of the relationship between digital and material-based digital fabrication. The research was inspired by direct observations of nature’s beauty in the form of thin films. The building block of the experiment is an n-hedron structure composed mainly of soap foam, which is blown into a foam structure. The paper questions this structure’s materiality, examines its physical performance and ephemeral characteristics, and expands on its meaning through an experiment in digital fabrication. Specifically, this experiment demonstrates various configurations of dynamic and programmable foam structures on a large scale of fabrication. The fabrication interacts with the algorithm, which involves a mixture of air and helium (controlled by pneumatic valves), as well as additive chemical substances and thickening agents, all of which exist in a certain space and time.
