summary Systems of feedback loops and cybernetic methods have influenced for decades the production and consumption networks and supply and demand chains in computer-integrated manufacturing. These mechanisms contribute to the increased efficiency of production, expanding the ability of both manufacturers and production engineers to create a workplace with smoother supply-chain management, as well as economies of scale and scope that are contingent on increased capitalism in a networked, globalized world. Mobility and flexibility are both physical and philosophical imperatives, aided by new small-scaled controls such as handheld wireless devices, which also contribute to a rising culture of nomadism. The shrinking scale of technologies and facilities has provided the mobile worker with numerous opportunities within complexly networked systems, forming a new paradigm for urban production spaces of the future. This paper is an investigation of how technology is changing and reshaping the architectural potentials for the contemporary industrial workplace.

summary The blockchain is a distributed ledger managed by a peer to peer network that stores all transaction records. The distributed ledger technology offers new possibilities, promising to ensure that data is secure, decentralized and incomparable. In the Architecture, Engineering, Construction (AEC) industry, Building Information Modeling (BIM) has quickly become a standard platform where all parties work together on a single and shared model for collaboration. The issues of Supply Chain Management (SCM) within BIM can be identified in BIM maturity level, based on PAS1193 that developed through Common Data Environment (CDE). The research strategy is to make model and simulation of SCM using BIM and create CDE to become decentralized and integrate the blockchain technology. The smart contract system validates every material and configuration of components within the model from the design stage until the operation stage. Traceability and auditability through an immutable historic eventually be more visible and allow real-time tracking of a material to a construction site providing a history from the origin.

title An accelerated subcontracting and procuring model for construction projects

summary Considering the characteristics of highly specialized corporation in the construction industry, it's crucial to select appropriate subcontractors to implement specific subprojects. In this research, the overall subcontracting supply chain of a construction project is considered as a global procurement system and an optimal combination of subcontractors can be obtained within this system. Combining the quick response mechanism of information technology with portfolio theory in financial management, an integrated XML (eXtensible Markup Language) of Accelerated Subcontracting And Procuring (ASAP) model was proposed. The ultimate goal of this study is not only to develop a web-based decision support system for general contractors to accurately decide an appropriate trade-off between risk and profit for different combinations of subcontractors, but to take the subcontracting and procuring process into re-engineering through omnipresent Internet. summary This article presents the contribution of our research to the description of the built elements in the site where information is shared by partners who are distant from one another and focused on fields of expertise that are distinct but concurrent. Our work aims to provide an information system that promotes cooperation between the buildings actors, by sharing a unique data model among the partners involved in the building construction processes. It takes into account the technical data needed in the different phases of the supply chain management cycle in the construction field. To answer a cooperative context, our work is based on the fundamental assumption that it is possible to structure a building description following the economist’s view point. During the implementation phase, the different activities on a building site can be described as a model that integrates all the related tasks and includes all the work practices and requirements shared among the partners of the architectural project.

title Designing for the Living Building Challenge: An Integrated Material Environment Visibility Framework for New Zealand Designers

summary To achieve rigorous performance in sustainability toward zero-carbon in the Built Environment, the New Zealand government also promotes Living Building Challenge (LBC) in design. The LBC seeks detailed material specifications till disposal with environmental impacts to measure sustainability in design and insists 75% of the project materials supply within 90 km of the project location. This study explored the constraints related to LBC material requirements and found the major barriers for designers are a) the sustainability imperatives namely red list and material lifetime are not considered by online material catalogue providers, b) no material data is shared among the primary stakeholders for acceptance and compliance evaluation, and c) no facility to identify the supply chain and suppliers within a certain distance of the project location. As a solution, this research designed a hybrid material catalogue having all possible material parameters classified into 5 major categories and developed an integrated material environment visibility framework linking the processes among the designers, contractors, suppliers, and the client. This proposed integrated framework provides a shared environment on material viewing, similar alternatives, accurate compliance evaluations in design, material suppliers availability, and other supply chain details at design stage itself. This new framework is currently under industry evaluation for compatibility, reliability, and industry professionals' acceptance.

summary Of the profileration of new business paradigms in recent years, one of the primary foci has been building closer relationships between firms in the value adding chain. Lean production, which encompasses J1T, supply-chain management, and TQM/continuous improvement, has provided an important paradigm for reorganization of business practices and is in the process of revolutioni-zing western mass production industries, particularly the automotive industry. While lean production is attractive, it is not appropriate for all industries or production requirements. Lean production works best within a relatively stable production volume and stable range of products. "Mass customization" has proven difficult for accomplished lean producers such as Toyota, and requires a different set of organizational disciplines than those used in lean production. For example, in the lean production paradigm, relationships with suppliers are long-standing and steady, while in a mass customization paradigm, relationships with and between long-term suppliers will vary over time, and new suppliers will enter and leave the organization in a transient fashion. The organization form appropriate to mass customization is the network organization (also known as the virtual corporation in the popular business press), of which construction project organization is an instance, At the project level, we examine construction organization in the context of network organization theory. In particular, we examine boundaries between firms to highlight problems of coordination in a multi-firm environment, and the interdependencies that arise due to coordination needs. We provide a conceptual framework to describe these aspects of construction network organization, and discuss ways that different construction firms are dealing with coordination and boundary problems by rethinking contractual relationships and building closer ties with other firms in the network.

summary The paper presents the findings of a systematic literature review of approximately 200 scientific sources. It is designed with the aim to identify the current benefits and factors of high performance in Architecture, Engineering, Construction (AEC) since the introduction of Building Information Modelling (BIM). We formed and confirmed two main propositions associating the performance of the AEC to the use of BIM. The mapping of the current impact and benefits of BIM showed that the role of the managers, suppliers, owners and authorities is underestimated, as well as the initiation and use stage of project development. At the same time, the performance in the AEC industry can be improved by an array of possibilities where IT research and policy-making authorities contribute – from establishing new collaboration protocols until improving existing or creating new BIM tools.

summary Increasing productivity and efficiency is an important issue in the AEC field. This area is mainly characterized by fragmentation, heterogeneous teams with low lifetimes and many uncertainties. 4D CAD is one of the greatest innovations in recent years. It consists in linking a 3D model of the building with the works planning in order to simulate the construction evolution over time. 4D CAD can fill several needs from design to project management through constructivity analysis and tasks planning (Tommelein 2003). The literature shows that several applications have been proposed to improve the 4D CAD use (Chau et al. 2004; Lu et al. 2007; Seok & al. 2009). In addition, studies have shown the real impact of 4D CAD use in construction projects (Staub-French & Khanzode 2007; Dawood & Sika 2007). More recently, Mahalingam et al. (2010) showed that the collaborative use of 4D CAD is particularly useful during the pre-construction phase for comparing the constructability of working methods, for visually identifying conflicts and clashes (overlaps), and as visual tool for practitioners to discuss and to plan project progress. So the advantage of the 4D CAD collaborative use is demonstrated. Moreover, several studies have been conducted both in the scientific community and in the industrial world to improve it (Zhou et al. 2009; Kang et al. 2007). But an important need that remains in collaborative 4D CAD use in construction projects is about the adaptation of visualization to the users business needs. Indeed, construction projects have very specific characteristics (fragmentation, variable team, different roles from one project to another). Moreover, in the AEC field several visualization techniques can represent the same concept and actors choose one or another of these techniques according to their specific needs related to the task they have to perform. For example, the tasks planning may be represented by a Gantt chart or by a PERT network and the building elements can be depicted with a 3D model or a 2D plan. The classical view (3D + Gantt) proposed to all practitioners in the available 4D tools seems therefore not suiting the needs of all. So, our research is based on the hypothesis that adapting the visualization to individual business needs could significantly improve the collaboration. This work relies on previous ones and aim to develop a method 1) to choose the best suited views for performed tasks and 2) to compose adapted multiple views for each actor, that we call “business views”. We propose a 4 steps-method to compose business views. The first step identifies the users’ business needs, defining the individual practices performed by each actor, identifying his business tasks and his information needs. The second step identifies the visualization needs related to the identified business needs. For this purpose, the user’s interactions and visualization tasks are described. This enables choosing the most appropriate visualization techniques for each need (step 3). At this step, it is important to describe the visualization techniques and to be able to compare them. Therefore, we proposed a business view metamodel. The final step (step 4) selects the adapted views, defines the coordination mechanisms and the interaction principles in order to compose coordinated visualizations. A final step consists in a validation work to ensure that the composed views really match to the described business needs. This paper presents the latest version of the method and especially presents our latest works about its first and second steps. These include making more generic the business tasks description in order to be applicable within most of construction projects and enabling to make correspondence with visualization tasks.

summary The paper outlines the relevance of computational geometry within the design and production process of architecture. Based on the case study “Twister”, the digital chain - from the initial form-finding to the final realization of spatial concepts - is discussed in relation to geometric principles. The association with the fascinating complexity, which can be found in nature and its underlying geometry was the starting point for the project presented in the paper. The translation of geometric principles into a three-dimensional digital design model was followed by a process of transformation and optimization of the initial shape, that integrated aesthetic, spatial and structural qualities as well as aspects of material properties and conditions of production.

summary As a new paradigm for construction in the ubiquitous era, IT Technology like RFID is an emerging issue in the building industry. For the purpose of RFID technology application in the building industry, this research suggests the Information Lifecycle Management using RFID technology in apartment building project and deals with the context-aware scenario for RFID technology application. The final objective of the research intends to develop the RFID application for the construction industry. From the tagging nodes at the material manufacture stage to the reading nodes at the end stage of the construction process, the flow of the RFID information deals with the synthetic application connecting physical construction material with electronic RFID information for the management. Furthermore, we suggest how to systematize, distribute and manage the construction material with the Information Lifecycle Management.

summary The traditional studies of urban morphology mainly focus on material aspects such as urban construction, urban environment. The writers of the paper, however, point out that the nature behind material aspects should be load capacity of urban land-use, which can be reflected through some economic and technological indexes, such as floor area ratio(FAR), building density and building height, and generally they are relative. The paper forms a new morphology zoning method after having studied the relation of the above indexes based on the digital methods of GIS. This rout of thought may have some reference value for controlling the expanse of urban land-use, optimizing the allocation of resources and urban morphology and supervising the implementation of urban planning. In the paper, the author proposed the concept of “zhubei” to describe and evaluate urban morphology. We can further analyze “zhubei” regards urban planning analysis and management, for example, the slope analysis, aspect analysis, view analysis, area and volume analysis etc. Therefore, we can describe current urban morphology and evaluate its rationality by relevant conclusions just like describing vegetation.

summary The purpose of this research is to build digital urban landscape, based on as-built environmental information. Scans were made to an expressway and surrounding buildings through the center of a city. A 3D long-range laser scanner was used to record buildings, plants, and open spaces in a static configuration, plus the records of pedestrians, vehicles, objects in a dynamic form. As the scan tolerance can be controlled in less than 4 mm/50 m, the final urban information management system creates a precise description of objects with colors and textures feasible for internet browsing as well as for infrastructure dimensioning and construction monitoring.

summary Additive Manufacturing (AM) for large format building components is becoming popular. AM has allowed architects and engineers to rethink the process of manufacturing building components through lightweighting strategies associated with the processes of AM. AM allows just-in-time production of components which reduces the need for large storage space and minimizes the carbon footprint of the supply chain by bringing the production closer to the actual construction site. However, the feasibility and efficiency of large format fused filament fabrication (FFF) for large building components are still unclear. This paper presents a Computational Design for Additive Manufacturing (CDfAM) workflow of a doubly curved gyroid lattice wall as part of the research on the technological affordance of large format planar FFF for a doubly curved gyroid lattice wall and the feasibility of 3D printing without support structures.

title Mycelium in Architectural Education

summary With supply chain issues and rising price of construction materials, mycelium can potentially provide reliable, eco-friendly and sustainable alternatives to traditional construction materials as substrates used for growing mycelium can contain almost any recycled cellulose: sawdust, used coffee grounds or paper. Characteristics of the final product are determined by substrate, mushroom species, the time of growth and further treatment of mycelium (e.g. high pressure forming). In this paper we describe semestral work of both students and tutors of an Experimental studio, focused on additive manufacturing together with rather novel sustainable materials. Students’ semestral task was to find use cases for mycelium as a building element. As a part of the assessment they were tasked to come up with use cases, designs, manufacturing methods and finally build a mock-up model in 1:5 scale. Students intuitively started with the combination of digital modelling plus digital fabrication. In the end they finished with manufacturing the physical model traditionally, where they had to react to the change of the visual outcome of the model. Firstly, we present the students’ solution for the mycelium material used in their model, next, we describe our observation of the whole process of letting students go through “learning by doing” research, Finally, we present lessons learned in this experiment.

summary In the field of Architecture and Building Construction is increasing the tendency to search information in the old construction handbooks to find more easily the best solutions to the recovery of ancient buildings: to make them easily accessible we are developing an “electronic handbook” by using the technologies related to Internet. The paper reports on M.I.C.R.A. (Manuale Informatizzato per la Codifica della Regola d’Arte), a WBI System able to allow different kind of users (from experts in the fields of Architecture and Building Construction to university students) to easily find the information stored in the old construction handbooks -edited since the 18th century and normally stored in different libraries around Europe- and to immediately compare them each other. The system information management and the data structuring are explained by describing the design strategies and the specific “research criteria” we have adopted to the development of the system.

summary The presented research study tackles the topic of economic and material sustainable development in the built environment and construction industry by introducing and applying the concept and the potential of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) on blockchain within the early stages of the design process via the interface of common design software. We present a digital infrastructure layer for architectural assets and building components that can integrate with AEC supply chains, enabling a more effective and articulated development of circular economies. The infrastructure layer consists of a combination of topology graphs secured with a blockchain. The paper concludes with a discussion about the possibilities of material passports as well as circular economy and smart contracts as an infrastructure for whole lifecycle BIM and digital encapsulation of value in architectural design.

summary In the building and construction industry the need for a more holistic enterprise-overlapping information exchange is obvious. Especially the management of cost-information from the very beginning design-phase to the point of controlling and billing is a very important task. Co-operation between architects, construction companies, engineering consultants, and authorities using digital information exchange becomes a strategic success factor. Solutions which cover all stages of the value creation chain such as e-tendering, cost-estimation, cost-determination, and production must be anytime accessible and platform independent. While the basic conditions of IT-infrastructure (digital networks) are today fully sufficient, the compatibility between the systems and the information to be exchanged represent the largest problem. The main problem is in the range of different systems and various information domains. Transformations and adjustments of the exchanged information still cost nearly 40 % of design and engineering time. Efficient information exchanges require a universal exchange format, which makes the existing systems compatible. This paper describes the German approach for a holistic information exchange in the building and construction industry. Furthermore the new approach to integrate the German GAEB Standard and the Industrial Foundation Classes (IFC) and the possibilities that can be obtained out of this integration will be explained.
