title MIKE : The Menu Interaction Kontrol Environment

summary User Interface Management System (UIMS) called MIKE that does not use the syntactic specifications found in most UIMSs is described. Instead, MIKE provides a default syntax that is automatically generated from the definition of the semantic commands that the interaction is to support. The default syntax is refined using an interface editor that allows modification of the representation of the interface. It is shown how active pictures can be created by adding action expressions to the viewports of MIKE's windowing system. The implications of MIKE's command based dialogue description are discussed in terms of extensible interfaces, device and dialogue-style independence, and system support functions

summary This research project proposed to create spatial and communal qualities of Group Form architecture via a web-based user participation design method. The proposed method allows multiple users to simultaneously design houses on the same site, encouraging spatio-temporal negotiation as users interact and collaborate with one another. In order to assess the feasibility of this approach, a prototype of a web-based Group Form design tool was implemented using the Processing environment. An experiment using the web-based tool was conducted with the objective of exploring the actual user behaviour.

summary We elaborate on results of our collaborations with Philip Beesley and the Living Architecture Systems Group over the past year. Instead of additional layers of material, spatial sound interweaves meaningful fabric to sculptural form and living architecture. An architectural design now can be embedded within a sonic field (exterior), or spatial sound can form itself inside sculptural objects (interior). 4DSOUND has evolved in implementing irregular speaker setups to enhance sound projection and create applied instrumental possibilities of composing with spatial sound in the sculptural realm. We will further discuss developments regarding the integration of the 4DSOUND Engine to control other media like light, kinetics, and sensor interfaces. The paper will conclude with future research and objectives.

In fact, both are extremely connected, like the handicraft. The same digital information that is used to design is feasible to be fabricated. The relationship between these technologies added to materials that came from nature, like the wood, are a field to be explored by designers. Right now we don´t know exactly how this new system will work, but there are no doubts that will change our near future.

summary In an increasingly technological, informed and demanding society Architecture should be able to answer to its space requirements using materials and technological resources that today has at its service. Kinetic systems have been used by architects as an approach that embeds computation intelligence to create flexible and adaptable architectural spaces according to users’ changing needs and desires. This paper describes one possible way of exploring kinetic systems to develop a foldable surface with geometric patterns based on the rules of rigid origami. This surface aims to take advantage of the elastic capacities given to a planar material by its folding. After folding the surface can assume different forms in order to create a range of spatial configurations ordered by a user through a remote control.

title EVALUATION OF THE OSLD HOUSING SYSTEM

summary In the production of low-income housing, one of the factors that most affects the low cost of each unit is its mass production. When it comes to building a proposed design it must have been sufficiently studied and evaluated. When designing low-income housing it is convenient to exhaust all the possibilities of simulation in order to produce a prototype that, once built, has reduced the risk of errors. Simulations allow to improve the prototype before proceeding to build it. The Real Scale Model (RSM) has proved to be a better simulation tool than computer generated models or 1:10 scale models. It allows to reproduce and evaluate perceptual experiences as well as being user friendly because most of the spatial variables can be represented. This research is another example of the use and effectiveness of the RSM in the field of design and architectural research.

A Real Scale Model of the basic unit was built by the students of the course Spatial Design Ability dictated by the LEE. The model was first evaluated empty and then a furnishing solution was proposed, built and evaluated. These evaluations were done by another group of students of the Faculty of Architecture and Planning using the Psychological Impressions Measuring Test (IMIP) developed by Luis La Scalea (1991). This test was designed to measure people’s psychological impressions produced by a space, and consists of a semantic differential structured by eleven pairs of opposing adjectives set on a scale of seven levels. The results of this first evaluation were analysed used to modify the prototype which was evaluated again in order to produce a final layout.

summary The paper unfolds the association between geometry and material behaviour, specifically the elastic properties of resin impregnated latex membranes, by means of homogenizing protocols which translate physical properties into geometrical functions. Resinimpregnation patterns are applied to 2D pre-stretched form-active tension systems to induce 3D curvature upon release. This method enables form-finding based on material properties, organization and behaviour. A digital tool developed in the Processing environment demonstrates the simulation of material behaviour and its prediction under specific environmental conditions. Finally, conclusions are drawn from the physical and digital explorations which redefine generative material-based design computation, supporting a synergetic approach to design integrating form, material and environment.

summary The teaching of architectural design involves the transfer of a broad spectrum of knowledge. This ranges in diversity from the acquisition of skills to those types of domain- distinctive knowledge which are actually employed in the generation of designs. The authors make a broad distinction between instrumental knowledge employed in various stages of design but peripheral to the actual process of generating designs, and conceptual-configurative knowledge which, in fact, makes the generation of designs possible. In the model of the design process in which there is a sequential relationship between the conceptual-formal and physical- material stages of design, this distinction between the instrumental and the conceptual is most marked during the early, or conceptual, stages of design. However it may be seen to follow through all stages of the design process

summary Our research approach which is termed Cognitive Design Media (CDM) demonstrates how the cognitive phenomena of design can be supported in computerized environments. Our current work on the ‘sketch’ project is introduced presented and illustrated. Sketching in design is considered to be one of the significant cognitive phenomena which supports exploration through re-representation in design. Until now, only the medium of hand drawing and sketching has been considered to support these processes. Rather than automating the traditional hand-made sketch, or interpreting sketches in a computer system, we are attempting to employ the computer to support one of the cognitive mechanism of re-representation which underlie the sketch activity.

summary The cognitive properties of design learning have rarely been the subject of design education. Irrespective of the specific design domain, traditional educational models in design education are based upon the evaluation of the product of designing rather than on what might be considered a learning increment. Lately we have developed the concept of cognitive learning tasks as learning increments in design education and propose that digital media constitute the basis of uniquely powerful learning technologies. The research described in this paper addresses the confluence of cognitive learning tasks as a pedagogical approach in design education, its potential relationship to digital media in order to develop a digital design didactics, and the relationship of these developments in design education to current practices of digital design generation. In this paper, we focus on the cognitive aspects of visual cognition in design learning. An example in the domain of architectural design is illustrated.

summary The incorporation of precedents into a present design situation by adaptation, restructuring and reformulation depends upon processes of typification and generalization. The function of prototypes as a characteristic form of generalized and structured knowledge in design is described. A precedent-based design model employing memory-based reasoning is proposed. It is argued that typological concepts can serve as a matching level between situation types and solution types. In such an approach both the organization of structured knowledge and the mechanisms of matching to prior knowledge such as cross-indexing and analogy appear to be of seminal importance. A memory-based reasoning process in routine, innovative and creative design is postulated. This is based on concepts of dynamic and episodic memory. Relevant work in the fields of memory organization, machine learning and analogical reasoning is considered with respect to its significance to the field of knowledge-based design

summary Discourse in digital architecture has begun to occupy new design concepts related to digital design. Design concepts are now becoming integrated into the general architectural discourse. This research investigated this process, the emergence, migration, and crystallization of a new conceptual content under the influence of digital design. In order to demonstrate this shift, significant projects were selected to represent features of the expression that reflects the changes and evolution of conceptual content that underlie digital design. This analysis was accomplished employing the ICF analytical framework. Our findings demonstrate the change in the conceptual structure in digital architecture. Certain expressions that are related to digital technology have moved up from a low level descriptive level to a significant conceptual role in formulating current ideational content. The methodology findings and the contribution to the definition of the conceptual content of contemporary discourse in digital architecture are described and presented in this paper.
