The only common aspect of these "virtual" projects is their use of computers. As a way to re-infuse meaning to the term Virtual, the paper describes a theoretical basis for understanding the meaning of being virtual (as opposed to being "Real, Actual" or "Possible") with special attention to the manipulation of ideas as is the case in designing architecture.

summary While distributed or collaborative design studios have a long pedigree (Donath 1999), there seldom arises the chance to test the limits of the concepts implied by the idea of the physically separated design team. The indigenous differences of culture, schedules and language accentuate this. The authors entered into an experimental design exercise that would seek to explore the range of dualities, which are often encumbered by such studios owing to their very nature. As an additional catalyst in the experiment, a design topic was chosen which reflected the nature of the studio thereby creating a Gödelian knot of self-referentiality.

summary The paper is a position paper, not a report about a research project. It concerns the paradigm-shift that is taking place in the CAAD software and its implications for the business of architecture and more importantly, for the education of future members of the profession. Twenty years ago the use of CAAD software as a replacement for hand drafting was starting. Since then the transformation is complete: hardly a final project in the universities is drawn by hand. Currently, we are witnessing a second paradigm shift and its name is BIM. The meaning of BIM is rooted in two significant differences to current CAAD software and this will have implications for teaching and practicing architecture. The first difference is the way the software structures information in the CAAD file. The standard way to save CAAD information was to organise simple geometric objects according to membership in groups and to sort them according to a layer-metaphor, which primarily controlled the visibility of the geometric elements. Three-dimensional modelling is/was nothing more than the same structure with a more complex geometry. BIM software changes this structure by storing classes of geometries and then to store the specific values of individual geometries according to factors that can be determined by external or internal logical factors. The implication for architects is that we have the chance to be the people in control of the building information model, so long as we invest the time and energy to fully understand what is happening to the building information during the planning process. If we ignore this, the real danger exists that the last control of the building’s final configuration will be usurped. As educators we are currently teaching students that will be leaving the schools in 2012 and beyond. By then, the paradigm-shift will be in full motion and so it behoves us to consider which skill sets we want the next generation of architects to possess. This means not just teaching students about how to use particular BIM software or how to program a certain parametric/genetic algorithm in a form-finding process. We need to teach our students to take the leadership in building information management and that means understanding and controlling how the building information flows, how the methodologies that are used by the consulting engineers affect our building models, and knowing what kind of logical inconsistencies (internal or external) can threaten the design intention.

summary The design of masonry, tile, and ceramics is an integral part of architectural history. High fired clays are unique in that they are amorphous, vitreous, and translucent. Similar types of light transmission through minerals and clays has been achieved in window panes using alabaster or marble, but unlike porcelain these cannot be cast, and they are susceptible to moisture. Additionally, glass and metal are commonly used to glaze ceramics, and this provides further possibility for the combination of translucency with surface ornamentation and decaling. It is within this architectural lineage, of compound stone and glass objects, that the Dunejars are situated. The Dunejars are translucent porcelain vessels that are designed as lenses to transmit different wavelengths of light into intricate and unexpected patterns. Similar recipes for porcelain were developed using wax positives during the 19th century to manufacture domestic Lithophanes; picturesque screens made of translucent porcelain, often displayed in windows or produced as candle shades (Maust 1966). The focus of the research involves pinpointing the lithophanic qualities of the clay so that they can be repeated by recipe, and refined through a digital workflow. The methods outlined here are the product of an interdisciplinary project residency at The European Ceramic Workcenter (Sundaymorning@EKWC) in 2018 to make tests, and obtain technical precision in the areas of, plaster mold design, slip-casting, finishing, firing, and glazing of the Dunejars. The modular implementation of these features at the scale of architecture can be applied across a range of scales, including fixtures, finishes and envelopes, all of which merit further investigation.

summary The research project Spatial Wire Cutting (SWC) investi- gates a multi-robotic cutting technique that allows for an efficient production of geometrically complex architectural components. Being pursued by the group of Gramazio Kohler Research at ETH Zurich, this approach involves a spatially coordinated movement of two six- axis robotic arms that control the curvature of a hot-wire, which adopts itself against the resistance of the processed material (e.g. pol- ystyrene). In contrast to standard CNC hot-wire cutting processes, in which the cutting medium remains linear, it allows the automated fab- rication of non-ruled, doubly curved surfaces. This pursuit includes the development of a custom digital design and robotic control framework that combines computational simulation and manufactur- ing feedback information. Ultimately, SWC enables a considerably expanded design and fabrication space for complex architectural ge- ometries and their construction through automated robotic technology. This paper addresses the applied workflow and technology 1) such as computational design and simulation, robotic control and adaptive fabrication, 2) results of application within a two-week design and building workshop, and 3) will conclude with further steps of future research.

summary Advances in digital media and digital communication has fostered the growth of a new enabling technology that allows geographically displaced individuals to hold group meetings and provides the opportunity to interact in a collaborative venture. The development of computer software to aid remote collaboration has, until recently, focused on the provision of tools that enable two or more people to participate in the shared authoring of a mixed-media (lexi-visual) documents. This paper presents a model of the design process which is founded on the transient nature of collaboration. The model is used to develop a multimedia framework to support remote collaborative design providing transitional support between synchronous and asynchronous design activity. A prototype system is used to illustrate the salient features of the framework.

summary Virtual2Reality mapping is a remote desktop exploration of the world using world-view and plan-view perspectives similar to that used in the historical geographer paradigm of exploration, the use of maps in support of the physical exploration of specific world locales. This new virtual shift in the paradigm provides real time remote visualization and collaboration using digital panoramic images - mimetic renditions of realworld locales (especially those with limited accessibility). The procedure embeds these panoramic renditions at geographical referenced locales in digital plan-view maps to produce a 'Virtual2Reality' mapping construct. The structure facilitates collaborative spatial decision making by providing a common structure for all stakeholders.

summary This research investigates the potential of 3 dimensional (3D), digital, interactive, multilayered information models, to enhance users’ understanding of sets of geographic and building information, allowing them to make quicker and more informed decisions, than when using alternative 2D methods. The research aims to quantify the benefit or otherwise of 3D methods of information interrogation over 2D methods by developing a test based around the decision making of two widely disparate user-groups within the Urban Planning industry. The underlying purpose of the research is to examine the human ability to interact with and understand datasets of information which are represented in the digital world. This paper specifically focuses on the methodology by which a robust test is developed to be carried out, thus proving or disproving the advantages of 3D display of information when compared to 2D. The ability to apply this same test to additional case studies in the future is a major consideration in the research design. There is a specific focus on integrating and testing a range of research instruments to best establish “language” of the industry and user groups within it, before conducting the major case study. The final research approach adopted is develop and present functional prototype models in a focus group scenario, involving hands-on interactive comparable 2D and 3D tasks, individual feedback surveys and group discussions.

summary This article describes the experience of a participatory design project of a milk collecting room. The objective of this project was to identify the desirable attributes of the environment and contemplate participatory design applications. The methodology used includes: AEIOU, SWOT analysis, Brainstorming, Wish Poems, interaction with the proposals using 3D modeling and Visual Selection. The present work confirms the benefits of the participatory process as a possibility to expand the comprehension of the user’s needs. Moreover, the project proved that digitalized graphic resources are easy to use and are beneficial to interaction with the present proposal.

summary It is an immutable truth that architecture ultimately exists for humans. Similarly, it is a well-known fact that countless architectural concepts derived and evolved to restrain development, to control building projects and to consider environment are eventually for the benefit of humans. Is it too much to say that everyone should have a say in the space used by many? In that respect, we have devised DADL System. Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere. The system is an architectural game that stimulates human instincts, has online communities and is easily accessible by Anyone Anytime and Anywhere (3A Rules). DADL System aims to gather users’ ideas and develop architecture, which is essentially enabled by the ‘Advise’ feature. Advise is designed to lead users to think about architecture voluntarily and to guide them to express their ideas. The structure and contents of Advises are very important factors in DADL System. Also, it is divided into two domains, i.e. Web and Mobile, where data exchange is enabled via cloud computing, establishing a base in compliance with the ‘3A’ Rules. The DADL System supports the architecture of everyone without relying on opinions of a few, so as to open the infi nitive potential for communication between architecture and humans, which today’s architecture should advocate.

summary MOLIT authorised Indoor Spatial Information as Basic spa- tial information in 2013. It became a legal evidence for constructing and managing Indoor Spatial Information. Although it has a little ad- vantage to utilise as service level that Indoor Spatial Information by laser scan or measurement, it has a lot of problems such as consuming many resources, requiring additional progresses for inputting Object Information. In conclusion, it is inefficient to utilise for the mainte- nance and domestic AEC/FM field. The purposes of this study is to output Indoor Spatial Information by operating IFC model which based on open BIM and to improve availability of Indoor Spatial In- formation with data visualisation. The open-sources of IFC Exporter, an inner program of Revit, is used to output Indoor Spatial Infor- mation. Directs 3D Library is also operated to visualise Indoor Spatial Information. It is possible to inter-operate between XML format and the objects of Indoor Spatial Information. It can be utilised in various field as well. For example COBie linkage in facility management, construction of geo-database using air-photogrammetry of UA V , the simulation of large-scale military operations and the simulation of large-scale evacuation. The method that is purposed in this study has outstanding advantages such as conformance with national spatial in- formation policy, high level of interoperability as indoor spatial in- formation objects based on IFC, convenience of editing information, light level of data and simplifying progress of producing information.

summary In step with the popular trend of including virtual working methods and tools in the process of teaching, the Virtual Design Studio (VDS) has been developed by the Institute for Industrial Building Production (ifib), at the University of Karlsruhe over the past three years. Alongside the technical aspects of such a studio, the challenge persisted to incorporate computer based tools into the architectural design and planning process with the goal of enhancing the relationship between all participants. The VDS is being further developed and refined, experiencing regular changes in its organization and teaching methods. With the establishment of the Virtual Upperrhine University of Architecture (VuuA) and the introduction of the Virtual Design Studio into the curriculum of the Institute for Architectural Presentation and CAD (adai), BTU Cottbus, the VDS extended beyond the borders of a single architectural school, aiming towards a wide acceptance and use within architectural education institutions.
