title Analysis of a Collaborative Computer Based Design Experience

summary The design experience referred to in this paper deals with the creative process for developing the pre-design of a new building for the Architecture and Urbanism Department of the Federal University of Santa Catarina / Brazil. The methodological proposition was to develop the design in a collaborative way and to try to use computers from the very beginning of the process. A tri-dimensional computer model was constructed on the sketch phase. Plans, sections and views were generated from this unique 3D model in order to assist development of ideas, coordination and visualization. As soon as the design alterations were defined, the 3D model was updated in order to generate automatic new drawing documents. Due to the number of design team components (8 people) and the high level of design complexity, constant hardcopies were necessary to ease designer’s participation in the idea propositions during meetings.

summary The architectural field is currently experiencing a paradigm shift towards a more environmentally-aware design process. In this new paradigm, known as Performance-Based Design (PBD), building performance emerges as a guiding principle. Unfortunately, PBD entails several problems, for instance, building design is often associated with the simultaneous assessment of multiple performance criteria, which dramatically increases the complexity of the problem. In this vein, recent works claim that coupling optimization tools with PBD approaches allows for more efficient and optima-oriented strategies. This approach, known as Algorithmic Optimization, is based on the use of an optimization tool combined with a parametric model of a design to iteratively generate more efficient design alternatives. This paper focus on evaluating and comparing different classes of Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) algorithms, namely, metaheuristics and model-based ones. In addition, in order to try to better understand the algorithms' suitability to different optimization problems, this research analyses two different MOO design problems.

summary This research addresses the impact that technologies, particularly the Internet of Things, have when facing - directly or indirectly - the current panorama of a pandemic due to COVID-19. First, we review the literature and propose a context that allows for efficient clarification regarding two concerns: where should we insert this project? What are the implications and scope of such a decision? Secondly, we present experiences of implementation of IoT prototypes, which – in context - consider the education of the population of an apartment building, the mitigation and detection of COVID-19 symptoms, and the ability to obtain data from these experiences.

title Simulation by Design: A Parametric Design Tool for Zero Energy Buildings

summary To address the shortcomings of integrating building simulation in architectural design and to make it more appealing to students, a simple interface to Energyplus was created. This interface models a simple rectangular building that is passively heated by direct gain and cooled by ventilation. A simple photovoltaic interface has also been added to supply fan energy. This tool has an OpenGL modeler for visualization and uses Energyplus for calculations. The interface will run a full year simulation and graph the results. The results are reported in a yearly graph that shows the outdoor and indoor temperature. The indoor temperature range is based on adaptive comfort level. The interface was tested and used in an introductory design studio in order to comply with the 2010 imperative. The students simulated a simple box and changed the buildings parameters until the building fell within the adaptive comfort zone for most of the year. The climate simulated was Chicago, IL. Using these parameters the students then designed the building. The resulting designs show that even though the students were restricted in parameters, such as window percentage, they were still able to creatively design unique buildings that use zero to negative net energy for heating and cooling in a climate such as Chicago.

title Virtual Reality in the Service of User Participation

summary The normal application of Virtual Reality is to the simulation of environments which are in some way special - remote, hazardous or purely imaginary. This paper describes research and development work which changes the paradigm by simulating perfectly ordinary buildings for special people. Some of the population have some form of physical impairment - a proportion which is likely to rise in line with an ageing population. New legislation, such as the UK Disability Discrimination Act places additional responsibility on building owners to ensure adequate access for people with an impairment and this in turn will place additional responsibility on the architect. Current methods of auditing access for new building are primitive and require the auditor to interpret plans/sections of the proposed building against a checklist of requirements specific to the special need. This paper reports on progress in the use of an immersive VR facility to simulate access to buildings for two broad classes of user:

i) those with a mobility impairment

ii) those with a visual impairment

In the former case, a wheelchair motion platform has been designed which allows the wheelchair user to navigate the virtual building; a brake and motor connected to the rollers on which the wheelchair sits facilitate the effects of slope and surface resistance.

summary This paper describes the inter-related use of three digital prototyping technologies by undergraduate students in the Department of Architecture and Building Science at the University of Strathclyde. These are: virtual reality computer graphics (CG), rapid manufacture (RM) of physical scale models from digital data, and acquisition of digital data relating to the shape of a physical object by some form of laser scanning (LS). The paper describes two experiments - one relating to housing, the other to a transport museum - to determine how seamlessly, accurately and usefully the (student) architect can move from one technology to another in the course of design.

summary This paper summarised a multi-media presentation which was authored without tuition by a 4th year student of the Department of Architecture & Building Science in the University of Strathclyde - Lindsay Johnston. In it she gives a detailed account of a 12 week project to design a Primary School relying very heavily on computer aided design support. It was a requirement of the brief that the design produced by the student should come within the (severe) cost, area and energy consumption constraints set out in the brief.

summary The paper describes a recent project whose objective was to redesign GIMSEX-PERT, an existing architectural knowledge- based design system developed in 1987. Its critical generative problems appeared to be the rigid structure and limited evaluation criteria. The project's outcome is DESTOOLS, based on the 'object-oriented-methodology' inspired by the traditional trial-and-error approach. It includes a set of interchangeable design methods that can be applied interactively by any desired sequence, producing or transforming a GIMS Building System object. Such 'moderately- loose' system structure offers flexibility in use, avoids pitfalls of knowledge-based design systems with rigid structure, and is applicable in design research, education and practice

summary In the next 25 years, the elderly population will increase on average to 65 thousand people annually in Chile (INE, 2018). Their independent living is jeopardized partially for diminished visual capacity that difficult spatial perception. Although light does not correct vision impairment, adequate light levels can respond to the needs of older people as preventing visual errors. This study evaluates daylighting availability in an assisting living residence in a southern city in Chile. A quantitative approach resulted in the identification of envelope-retrofit strategies that allow achieving recommended levels of natural lighting, particularly in shared spaces where residents spend most of the day. The results show that it would be possible to achieve better light availability, as it also allows for a better understanding of the contributions of the building envelope. Finally, the study outlines recommendations for future retrofits that meet requirements for visual comfort for a growing senior population.

summary Proper design of building form will facilitate the use of climate environment in order to reduce the reliance of buildings on active equipment. This study takes the cold region of China as the research area, and Jinan city of Shandong province as a typical city in the cold region for specific research. The multi-objective optimization tool based on NSGA-II algorithm is used to optimize the opening angle, length of both sides and floor height of the building, and finally the optimal size range of the university teaching building under the influence of solar radiation heat gain in winter and summer is obtained, and the results show that for the U-shaped university teaching building, the parameters that affect the building performance more in the case of the east side opening are the length of the north side building and the rotation angle of the south side building, and the parameters that affect the performance more in the case of the west side opening are the length of the building on the south side.

This element was created to protected interior environment from direct sun light and provide good ventilation. The paper will present the process, different prototypes, methodologies and software used along the research. In future work we will test different algorithms to make the system responsive not only to environmental factors but to human activities.

summary Computer-Aided Architectural Design Futures was conceived late one evening in the bar of the Metropole Hotel in Brighton, UK. Those present - veterans of a hundred and one CAD conferences - were bemoaning the degree to which big business was taking over the conference scene: exhibiting was replacing conferring, selling was replacing thinking, products were replacing ideas. Wouldn't it be nice, we agreed, to get back to an 'academic' conference which would take stock of current developments in CAAD and attempt to anticipate the direction of future developments and their impact on architectural practice, on the building industry and on the quality of the built environment? Four major themes are explored in CAAD Futures: (1) Systematic design; (2) Drawing and visualization; (3) Artificial intelligence and knowledge engineering; (4) Implications for practice. // Stimulus papers on these four themes were circulated prior to the Conference, and the conference papers themselves elaborated the issues raised in the stimulus papers in such a way as to encourage discussion. The resulting book, we believe, will be a major reference text for students, researchers and practitioners.

summary In New Zealand's (NZ) mild climatic conditions, most residential houses are ventilated naturally, mainly by opening windows. However, maintaining the indoor thermal comfort characteristics of a house by modulating natural ventilation is particularly challenging, as the solution is not explicit. Determining a solution requires a technique that adjusts openable window area while encapsulating the complexity, dynamics, and nonlinearity associated with the natural ventilation driving forces and building thermal behavior. By verifying that there exists a significant potential of regulating indoor thermal comfort of a relatively airtight and insulated house by adjusting window openable area; this work additionally confirmed an excellent capability of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technique in predicting air temperature time-series of the naturally ventilated house. On the basis of these examinations, this work particularly developed a co-simulation strategy between building thermal-airflow model and the ANN model and demonstrated that windows could be regulated intelligently to modulate the natural ventilation and maintain indoor thermal comfort level during the summer period by applying Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based predictive controller technique.

summary Continuous change in contemporary cities heve produced an urban space tipollogically diverse, particulary in fast growing South-American countries. As a result, the straight contextual analysis, usually used to assess the degree of innovation/permanence of new buildings in urban settings becomes ineffective, for the simple reason that frequently it is virtually impossible to establish what the context dominance actually is. The method proposed in this paper takes the issue of tipological analysis from a systems approach. This is carried out by a series of procedures, such as: a) identifying buildings'constitutive parts, which can be done at any degree of detail; b) listing them according to their attributes of repertory and formal composition. ;with this it is obtained a extensive catalogue of the entities taking part of the considered urban setting, from which the actual context can be depicted; c) listing each entity's participation in the landscape composition, or the role each one has in the landscape configuration. The software that operates the analysis does the rest, measuring the degree of innovation/permanence of each entity, in relation to the others, and defining what the context is made of.. From this, any inclusion/exclusion in the considered townscape is automatically evaluated in terms of impact on the pre-existing setting. The system can be used at any urban scale, as well as at the building scale.
