summary Nowadays, most of building managers (e.g., companies, local communities, government agencies) have to face up a common set of problems. For instance, these problems are a deficient knowledge of ancient buildings and networks (e.g., gas, water), an inefficient management of green spaces, ora lack of communication between users (e.g., technical staff, suppliers, building end users). In addition, building and spaces to be managed may be shared among several distant areas. LAMIH works aim to achieve methodologies and computer tools for building management andassociated logistic. These works include two aspects we present in this paper:- a methodological one: the establishment of a project business plan, applied to building and logistic management,- a computer aspect: the design and implementation of a decision and management support system, the Geographical and Logistical Information System (G.L.I.S.). The project business plan includes the creation of a task force which has to lead the project and the description of the project plan.The G.L.I.S. is a software set which uses shared database. In particular, this set allows the different users to:- manage a patrimony as a whole, with the help of a Geographical Information System,- manage buildings and networks,- improve communication and logistic aspects with the help of a groupware tool. We present the achievement of these methodology and tools as part of a particular area: theUniversity of Valenciennes which is shared among four towns. The project takes into account existing buildings and those to be built, spaces which separates them, and the relationships betweenthe four different sites of the University. A task force is created as well as a specialised service, the Building Management Department. This department represents an interface between the task force,the LAMIH, and a centre of Information Technologies in construction (CERTIC) which is created as part of the SCENIC project (Support Centres Network for IT in Construction, Esprit project 21772).

summary The urban green space positively affects the quality of the environment and urban life. To estimate the layout of urban green spaces, especially to describe the real difference of regional properties, the influenced zone of each green space should be identified firstly. The influenced zone can be used to quantitatively analyse the difference of regional environmental quality. The identification of the influenced zones of green spaces actually is a problem of space partitioning. The study compared three methods mostly used in space partitioning. The regular grid is a most common partitioning method. It is easy to use, but cannot link the grid with green space separately. Voronoi algorithm is a constructive method which partitions the urban space based on each green. Another approach is the application of gravity models, which assumed analogies between human behaviour and Newtonian gravity laws. The gravity model could calculate the probabilities of residents to choose the green space and partition the urban space. In the comparison of these three methods, we conclude that the gravity model can take more characteristics of the green space as the calculating parameters. The gravity model is a better method to estimate the layout of urban green spaces.

summary Certain buildings are required in urban green space according to the Chinese regulations, and their area depends on the type and area of the green space. The scale of the single building or the disperse extent of the building group dramatically influences the local ecological environment and landscape. However, it is lack of effective methods to evaluate the distribution of buildings, and it is hard to plan and manage the buildings in the green space. According to the description of distribution features of geographic objects in geostatistics, this study presents the Index of Distribution (IOD) to describe the distribution pattern of buildings in the green space. Yuhuatai Park and Qingliangshan Park of Nanjing are chosen as cases to verify the effectiveness of IOD. Based on the genetic algorithm, the paper also presents a generating model, which can generate the plan of the buildings corresponding with the specific IOD. The model is effective to respond with the flexibility of location of the building. The results of the model can be used as the valuable reference to the planning of buildings in the green space.

summary Designing colours for architecture with digital tools is still a challenging topic. Especially for customers and students the perception of a full-scale coloured interior room is hard to imagine. This paper presents a software prototype and a small user study, which addresses the colour design process with professional digital tools and a virtual reality head mounted device (Oculus Rift DK2). The user can navigate within an imported three-dimensional model freely and change colour, texture and light properties with a real-time updated radiosity visualization. The presented user study compares a screen based working method with the developed virtual reality based design support and interaction method.

summary At present more than half of all building activity in the German building sector is undertaken within existing built contexts. Work in existing building fabric is an essential aspect of most architects’ activities. The development of a conceptual and technological basis for the digital support of design directly on site, in and with the available architecture is the main focus of the research project “Spatial Augmented Reality for Architecture”. This article describes one part of the research project: the sampling of colours and materials at a scale of 1:1 using Augmented Reality technologies. This makes it possible to project the colour and material qualities of a design directly onto any surface within an existing building, geometrically corrected. A first software prototype SAR-CA has been developed and then assessed using a user study to obtain a first evaluation of the prototype to determine the direction of future research. Future research areas are discussed at the end of the paper.

title Spatial Augmented Reality for Architecture Designing and planning with and within existing buildings

summary At present, more than half of all building activity in the German building sector is undertaken within existing built contexts. The development of a conceptual and technological basis for the digital support of design directly on site, within an existing building context is the focus of the research project "Spatial Augmented Reality for Architecture" (SAR). This paper describes the goals achieved in one aspect of the project: the sampling of colors and materials at a scale of 1:1 using Augmented Reality (AR) technologies. We present initial results from the project; the development of an ad-hoc visualization of interactive data on arbitrary surfaces in real-world indoor environments using a mobile hardware setup. With this, it was possible to project the color and material qualities of a design directly onto almost all surfaces within a geometrically corrected, existing building. Initially, a software prototype "Spatial Augmented Reality for Architecture-Colored Architecture" (SAR-CA) was developed and then assessed based on evaluation results from a user study.

summary Activities in the building industry in Germany concentrate increasingly on a combination of renovation and new building. A prerequisite for computer-aided planning in the context of existing buildings is both the use of on-site computer aided techniques and the integration of all professional disciplines in an integrated information and communication system. How will computers be used on site in the future? Which equipment will be needed? An ongoing interdisciplinary research project undertaken jointly by the faculty of media and the faculty of architecture is investigating methods and techniques for the computer-aided support of the design process with and within existing buildings. The aim of this project is the development of a practice-oriented toolbox for the architectural design process based on SAR (spatial augmented reality). This paper focuses on Augmented-Reality based user interaction on site using laser pointer tracking. The project is funded by the German Research Foundation.

summary Empirical cycling data from across the world illustrates the many barriers that car-dependent cities face when implementing cycling programs and infrastructure. Most studies focus on physical criteria, while perception criteria are less addressed. The correlations between the two are still largely unknown. This paper introduces a methodology that utilises computer vision analysis techniques to evaluate 15,383 Google Street View Images (SVI) of Brisbane City against both physical and perception cycling criteria. The study seeks to better understand correlations between the quality of a street environment and an urban area's 'bicycle-friendliness'. PSPNet Image Segmentation is utilised against SVIs to determine the percentage of an image corresponding with objects and the environment related to specific cycling factors. For physical criteria, these images are then further analysed by Masked RCNN processes. For perception criteria, subjective ranking of the images is undertaken using Machine Learning (ML) techniques to score images based on survey data. The methodology effectively allows for current findings in cycling research to be further utilised in combination via computer visioning (CV) and ML applications to measure different physical elements and urban design qualities that correspond with bicycle-friendliness. Such findings can assist targeted design strategies for cities to encourage the use of safer and more sustainable modes of transport.

summary The character of interdisciplinarity in planning approaches create a new, intriguing, emerging complexity (Funtowitcz and Ravetz, 1994) in problems and in knowledge-structuring of contexts of planning practices. The key-role played by information systems (IS) implicates a re-consideration ofcharacter of knowledge to be used in knowledge-bases. The necessity of considering knowledge domains coming from social, cultural, economical, technical, physical and naturalistic approaches means dealing with different scales of value, with non homogenous parameters. The necessity ofmanaging flexible knowledge rises on the fore as fundamental issue for future information system oriented to supporting decisions. Might information systems be useful in this interdisciplinary approach ? It is necessary to contain in a knowledge-base both quantitative and qualitativeinformation ? Three alternatives are available for a conceptual discussion :the possibility of identify new approaches, in order to develop information systems able in managing new knowledge; the necessity of adding new support systems oriented to manage soft knowledge, to traditionalgeographic information systems (GIS); the possibility of non using support systems coming from a technological vision of problem for nontechnical knowledge (Latouche 1996). summary BioDigital architecture and design is a fusion of biological and digital domains. Qualitative research project is proposed, aiming to collect information about the theoretical body, key concepts and cases of BioDigital product design. Books, papers, websites and digital platforms (CumInCAD and Scopus) were reviewed, and the professor Alberto T. Estévez was interviewed, one of the main promoters of this proposal. Most information found was focused on the BioDigital architecture, the professor Alberto T. Estévez defines the foundations and methods of BioDigital proposal, who outlines biodigital product design basis, other references are Claudia Pasquero and Marco Poletto and the professor Marcos Cruz. Cases of biodigital product design were found at different complexities and approaches, mostly from the U.S. and Europe and few cases from Latin America. It is concluded that is an emerging and avant-garde approach field with little information available and it opens new perspectives for product design.

summary Architecture is built in artificial and natural environments, some are real others are virtual. Until now, CAAD, CAD, and 3D modeling and simulation software have not included the environment and are therefore limited to imprecise representations. This challenges the algorithmic complexity of the software that simulates elements of nature, air, natural and artificial light using techniques of radiosity and raytracing. Today, CAACD (Computer Architectural Aided Climate Design) software needs information like geographic location, atmospheric and climatic conditions of the place to use it in conceptual decisions during the design process and to be able to guarantee environmental comfort in the project. This situation has provided me, together with professors and postgraduate students in the discipline of landscape architecture, with the fundamental framework for my study, namely: The virtual construction of a region, including digital representation of the built environment and the tropical flora. summary This work was conceived from the common interests and objectives of two universities in the Argentine Littoral region, who have been addressing problems of the communities of the insular micro-region for several years. The methodology included physical and virtual meetings in the activities of both chairs to create a Transmedia Bestiary of imaginary animals of the Litoral, defining the guidelines to work on the technical characteristics, both physical and digital, that would be applied to the final production. The results were diverse. Each group of students generated its own Transmedia Narrative including proposals with Artificial Intelligence, illustrations, websites, video games, augmented reality, etc. In the analog medium, they generated 2D and 3D prints and built prototypes with different techniques, which made it possible to apply autonomous movement to the designed animals. Different evaluation methods focused on learning were used and reflections on the value of inter and transdisciplinary experiences were elaborated.

summary The transversal design implies to explore “rizomatic” ways to enter upon the design process, nourishing itself of different artistic expressions, not only to stimulate and unlash the heuristic process, but to found the project´s decisions. In this workshop we encourage the students to understand creative processes from an integrative scope, combining different methods of plastic experimentation, enhanced from digital environment, and different design scales; using digital media as the tool of production and communication. This is an interdisciplinary workshop since it was led by architects, an actress and a literature professor; and it was directed to architecture and visual communication design students. The experience was very exciting, mainly for the students, they responded with enthusiasm to the professors´ proposals. The relationship between teachers was founded in the fact of sharing conceptual basis and pedagogical objectives, and the respect of particular concerns. Interdisciplinary work opens rich possibilities of interchange, knowledge and intellectual growing. [Full paper in Spanish]

summary This paper discusses the aims of media and technologies from a political insight, knowing the shortcomings and contradictions that cross the Latin American countries, for the purpose of being able to visualize them, think them and provide possible solutions, taking advantage of the creative potential of the university. With this objective, we developed an experience that integrated a research project on the design and production of artifacts, interfaces and representations capable of articulating the links between subjects, actions and dimensions, with the teaching and learning processes of an interdisciplinary design workshop, that created and activated territorial transformation devices with a sense of community collaboration.

summary There is a growing need for parametric design software that communicates building performance feedback in early architectural exploration to support decision-making. This paper examines how the circuit of design and analysis process can be closed to provide active and concurrent feedback between architecture and services engineering domains. It presents the structure for an openly customisable design system that couples parametric modelling and energy analysis software to allow designers to assess the performance of early design iterations quickly. Finally, it discusses how user interactions with the system foster information exchanges that facilitate the sharing of design intelligence across disciplines.

title Lighting Intention Materialization with a Light-Based Parametric Design Model

summary How the inverse lighting methods could help the architectural design? We address this issue with an original light-based parametric design model dedicated to the architectural design. This model associates the parametric design approach with the lighting intentions expressed by the architects. It has been implemented thanks to an inverse lighting technique in a tool intended to aid the design of the windows and the shading devices in the early stages of architectural design. This model is used in a performative design approach onto the dome of the Louvre Abu Dhabi museum in order to define the transparency property of the dome.

title Drawing and CAD in industrial design

summary Drawing is an essential component in the industrial design process, facilitating visual thinking and creativity. It constitutes one type of design model, along with specifications, 3D representations and CAD techniques. The design process involves movement from one model to another, and by using representations of different types and at different levels of detail a fluid and inventive design approach is facilitated. Examples of schematic drawings, ideas sketches and concept drawings demonstrate this in product design and transport design. CAD has proved to be highly effective in evaluative and analytical design development, and in manufacture. It is inherently unsuitable for innovative design, but has potential for contributing to evolutionary design, as is evidenced by its proven effectiveness in engineering optimization. Automotive design is almost always concerned with design evolution, and procedures for car stylists to work productively with CAD are being developed in Coventry Polytechnic's SERC funded research project Computer Aided Vehicle Styling. Vehicle stylist's design thinking is characterized by holistic, right-hemisphere processes informed by tacit knowledge and dependent on visual representation. They have particular difficulties with CAD systems. Nonetheless, design techniques that capitalize on CAD's potential and may be applicable to industrial design are briefly described. CAD drawings and conventional design drawings are compared by using examples from the car industry, and from the research project. Tentative speculations about future design procedures are made.

title Form creation techniques for automotive CAD

summary Although there is a significant commitment to the use of CAD in the car industry, the industrial designer makes less use of it than engineering designers do. Vehicle stylists responsible for the early stages of the process have found that CAD systems and procedures are ill-suited to their methods and needs. As there are considerable potential benefits to the overall proc if it can be based around integrated CAD systems using common data bases, there are good reasons for devising procedures for automotive stylists that overcome the problems which CAD systems seem to present. This project has been concerned with devising such procedures. It has included a collaborative exercise with a motor manufacturer and has resulted in a collection of recommended techniques for form creation on CAD for automotive designers.

title Sketching and direct CAD modelling in automotive design

summary This paper examines two methods of computer-based car styling: texture mapping and direct computer modelling. An overview of current activity in the field precedes a comparison and evaluation of the methods within a typical framework for automobile concept design. Three case studies illustrate the direct modelling method, showing differences of computer use in each case. Further developments of texture mapping are reported, with a proposal for iterative combining of texture mapping and direct modelling.
