summary This work proposes the use of partial order lattices along with represent-ational schemes to account for patterns of ambiguity and emergence in the description of designs. The complexity of such designs is viewed as an aggregation of spatial layers that can all be decomposed by the subgroup relations of the symmetry of the configuration. At the end, this methodology points to a combinatorial approach that generates visual prototypes for future use in design synthesis. Here, Meier’s work is just a case study that validates the group theoretical approach.

summary This research describes a tool which can be used outdoors instead of a paper medium by a group of people to facilitate city tour guiding or design studies. First, the problems of the device and software which constitute the developed outdoor type MR (Mixed Reality) system were considered. Problems regarding the display, sensor, and composition with video and 3DCG images were clarified. In addition, taking account of the problem that the display is dark outdoors, the luminosity of a number of displays was measured in a dark room and outdoors. In addition to the dark room contrast ratio, the importance of ambient contrast was highlighted through the experiment.

summary The working team is comprised of professionals and students from Engineering and Architecture degree courses. This group, participating at a certified research by Secretaría de Ciencia y Técnica de la Nación, have agreed to carry out a joint designing experience about a micro-architecture prototype to be domotized by the Chair of Automation of Mechanical Engineering.We have designed a display equipment for local bookstores. The equipment in itself is ductile and useful to build a stand. It can be easily coupled and divided into modules for shop windows and different spaces within stores. It is changeable, flexible, and its arrangement is dynamic. The design contemplates general sample functions according to the various sizes of the product, which range from small to large-scale objects.The equipment offers its own domotic features.

summary Since mid 1990s internet has been developing rapidly to become the most booming and emerging media in late history and play an important role in living. Therefore, how to design an interface of easy to use has become an important issue pertaining to Human Computer Interaction. Norman (1986) proposed in the human computer interaction, there is a design model in the mind of designer. In turn, the designer will follow design model and to design a set of system image that is functional, learnable, and usable. Therefore, we want to understand the critical factor of influencing toward website construction, we should find out the mental model that web design team at first. In this paper, we using the Interactive Qualitative Analysis (IQA) approach. The data collection method of the participant of the focus group’s silent brainstorming is adopted. Further analyze web design team’s the conceptual model on website construction through inductive coding and axial coding. The result shows the affinities of 9 web design team is thus produced. And, Business Decision, Team Performance, Self-Fulfillment and Entrepreneur Communication are main influence factor. These factors can lead trend and goal of a website.

summary In the course of a study into the origins of the Ionic order, a group of fragmentary early capitals of historic importance were measured by short-range laser-scanning, and then reconstructed in their original state by means of NURBS surface modelling. Drawings, renderings and scaled facsimiles were produced from both types of model, and proved invaluable in the formal analysis of the objects by architectural historians. It is suggested that these digital methods are more objective and accurate than traditional drawings and plaster reconstructions, and the resulting datasets more sustainable and of greater value to subsequent researchers.

summary This study investigates how the use of digital technology in general, and electronic information and automation, especially during the course of study and preparation of urban and architectural designs on the one hand, and analysis of the impact of these applications and uses of the media automation and information technology at various stages of Physical planning and architectural design of projects, on the other hand. The comparison between modern and traditional methods, to determine the positives and negatives of both sides on the economic (economy, effort, money and time) and technical, which includes (graphic representation: painting, measure, Quality, precision, colours, details and other ....). The answer to whether computer and digital development has invented, added, or nothing of substance to content of architecture and urban planning designs, or has enabled us to solve the urban and architectural problems related to social and cultural aspects. We have in this study, the city of _Boussa_da_ in the south of Algeria as an example, through which presentation and analysis of two types of field projects carried in our architectural office using; media techniques and various programs: (Architectural3.3/Accurender/Art-lantis...) mentioning That, the two projects have been completed and approved, and are now in the process of realisation. The first project represents a residential neighbourhood area of (82.65 ha), through the action plan and land uses called _Plan d_occupation des sols_ in Algeria, No.09, in order to create and prepare the new town for extension, establish administrative and commercial centre, and determine the nature of land use; (equipment, facilities and housing),for a population number estimated (12,264)inhabitants, and projected number of housing estimated at 2409 houses, with a density of 150 inhabitants / ha. The second project is to study the architecture of the 50 houses earmarked for social Tzhmia working group, formed 25 three-room apartment type with(67.00 m 2) and 25 four-room apartment type with(77.00m2). However, The study aims to identify the impact of automated information applications and information technology used at different stages of urban planning and architectural design of these projects under consideration by the comparison between the traditional design table, and electronic design table to determine the pros and cons of each one of these means on the one hand, and stages of concepts and design, On the other, before concluding to how to use the media automation and digital technology, trying to find a point of hugs between the means and tools of Planning and design, through the analysis of the historical path of each of these elements.

summary The paper which is proposed here will introduce an ongoing research project aiming to research data mining as a methodology of knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis. To address the increasing multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires a multidisciplinary approach to urban analysis. This research is an attempt to establish a link between knowledge discovery methodologies and automated urban feature analysis. Therefore, in the scope of this research we apply data mining methodologies for urban analysis. Data mining is defined as to extract important patterns and trends from raw data (Witten and Frank, 2005). When applied to discover relationships between urban attributes, data mining can constitute a methodology for the analysis of multi-dimensional relational complexity of urban environments (Gil, Montenegro, Beirao and Duarte, 2009) The theoretical motivation of the research is derived by the lack of explanatory urban knowledge which is an issue since 1970’s in the area of urban research. This situation is mostly associated with deductive methods of analysis. The analysis of urban system from the perspective of few interrelated factors, without considering the multi-dimensionality of the system in a deductive fashion was not been explanatory enough. (Jacobs, 1961, Lefebvre, 1970 Harvey, 1973) To address the multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires the consideration of diverse spatial, social, economic, cultural, morphological, environmental, political etc. features of urban entities. The main claim is that, in urban analysis, there is a need to advance from traditional one dimensional (Marshall, 2004) description and classification of urban forms (e.g. Land-use maps, Density maps) to the consideration of the simultaneous multi-dimensionality of urban systems. For this purpose, this research proposes a methodology consisting of the application of data mining as a knowledge discovery method into a GIS based conceptual urban database built out of official real data of Beyoglu. Generally, the proposed methodology is a framework for representing and analyzing urban entities represented as objects with properties (attributes). It concerns the formulation of an urban entity’s database based on both available and non-available (constructed from available data) data, and then data mining of spatial and non-spatial attributes of the urban entities. Location or position is the primary reference basis for the data that is describing urban entities. Urban entities are; building floors, buildings, building blocks, streets, geographically defined districts and neighborhoods etc. Urban attributes are district properties of locations (such as land-use, land value, slope, view and so forth) that change from one location to another. Every basic urban entity is unique in terms of its attributes. All the available qualitative and quantitative attributes that is relavant (in the mind of the analyst) and appropriate for encoding, can be coded inside the computer representation of the basic urban entity. Our methodology is applied by using the real and official, the most complex, complete and up-to-dataset of Beyoglu (a historical neighborhood of Istanbul) that is provided by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB). Basically, in our research, data mining in the context of urban data is introduced as a computer based, data-driven, context-specific approach for supporting analysis of urban systems without relying on any existing theories. Data mining in the context of urban data; • Can help in the design process by providing site-specific insight through deeper understanding of urban data. • Can produce results that can assist architects and urban planners at design, policy and strategy levels. • Can constitute a robust scientific base for rule definition in urban simulation applications such as urban growth prediction systems, land-use simulation models etc. In the paper, firstly we will present the framework of our research with an emphasis on its theoretical background. Afterwards we will introduce our methodology in detail and finally we will present some of important results of data mining analysis processed in Rapid Miner open-source software. Specifically, our research define a general framework for knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis and enable the usage of GIS and data mining as complementary applications in urban feature analysis. summary The delivery of a successful project demands high levels of collaboration across an expanded design team, which now includes consultants, fabricators and contractors as well as architects and engineers. The pace of development in design technology has been very rapid during the last few years and there are now many software products which offer high levels of sophistication. Most provide associative and parametric modelling strategies, which can be further enhanced and extended by the use of scripting languages. Designers are becoming tool-builders while fabricators are becoming digital craftsmen. With the advent of fast efficient drawing extraction the industry is at last making determined steps towards a model-driven process. However there is no integrated platform which supports the free exchange of ideas, combined with the evaluation of performance, experimentation with production techniques and the evolution of project-specific workflows. In education the design schools have been quick to recognise the potential of the new design technology. This has led to a rapid expansion in course curricula that now offer many new specialisations, most of which also need to be under-pinned by a good grounding in descriptive geometry, mathematics and physics. The architect as a generalist, who coordinates the work of specialists, is being challenged by an increasing breadth of technical studies that require more than just a superficial depth of understanding. In practice the gulf is widening even more rapidly. New graduates, who often have spectacular expertise in modelling and fluency in scripting languages, do not yet have the design and construction experience necessary to direct their efforts to best effect. On the other hand people running project teams do not have the technical background to understand the potential of the skills and resources that are available. Today there is no longer the continuity that used to derive from apprenticeship. As we experiment we find that tools based on new ideas and techniques can radically change workflow – but fear of the unknown can provoke resistance. So the problems we face in harnessing the new technology are as much social and cultural as they are technical. The presentation will focus on developing attitudes towards tool-building with the aim of integrating design, analysis and production. This is part of a continual and quite gradual process, which requires the ability to play interpretive roles that help to bring about cultural change. Examples will be shown from the work of the Specialist Modelling Group at Foster+Partners who now have tenyears experience in deploying design technology in an environment where research is intensely project driven.

title Conceptual Structural Design Through Knowledge Hierarchies

summary Computer support for conceptual design still lags behind software available for analysis and detailed design. The Software Environment to Support the Early Phases in Building Design (SEED) project has the goal of providing design generation and exploration capabilities to aid in the conceptual design of buildings, from architectural programming and layout to enclosure design and structural configuration. The current work presents a component of the efforts of the SEED-Config Structure group in providing computer support for conceptual structural design. The Building Entity and Technology (BENT) approach models data about building elements in a general, hierarchical form, where design evolution is represented by the growing specificity of the design description. Two methods of system-supported design generation are provided: case-based reasoning and application of knowledge rules. The knowledge rules, termed technologies, and how they are specified and used are the primary focus of this thesis. In the BENT approach, conceptual structural engineering knowledge is modularized into technology nodes arranged in a directed 'AND/OR' graph, where OR nodes represent alternative design decisions and AND nodes represent problem decomposition. In addition, nodes in the graph may also be specified as having AND/OR incoming arcs thus reducing the duplication of nodes and enhancing the representational power of the approach. In order to facilitate the incorporation of new knowledge into the system, and verify and/or change the knowledge already in the system, the data model and the interface allow for dynamic creation, browsing, and editing of technology nodes. Design generation through the use of the knowledge hierarchy involves the conditional application of nodes according to the design context as represented by the building element(s) under consideration. Each application of a technology node expands the design of building elements by increasing the detail of the design description or by decomposing the elements into less abstract components. In addition, support for simultaneous design of multiple elements and for iteration control are also provided. An important feature of the BENT approach is that the generative knowledge (i.e., the technology hierarchy) is detached from the information repository (i.e., the database of entities which make up the building). This allows the technology hierarchies to be used in a modular fashion from building problem to building problem.

summary We now witness an upsurge in mainstream generative design tools fortified by simulation that speed up the concealed linear synthesis of optimized design alternatives. In pursuit of optimality, these tools saturate local machines or cloud servers with analysis and design iteration data, only to discard it once the procedure has concluded. Largely absent, however, are tools for an active, adaptive relationship with design exploration and the reuse of corresponding design data and metadata. In Pattern Making and Pattern Learning, we propose that these characteristics are mutually beneficial. This paper presents a series of revisions to the optimization framework for routine design synthesis that examine a potential symbiosis between the production of large datasets (big data) and non-routine practices of making in design. Our engagement with iterative design exercises is twofold: as a supply of computer-generated design information to foster user intuition and explore the design space on non-objective terms, and as a supply of human-generated design information to learn artifacts of user preference in the interest of design software personalization. These concepts are applied to the generation of functionally graded patterning in chair design, combining methods of physical production with programmable sheet material behavior through a custom interactive synthesis framework.

summary This paper presents a recent design project – a group work of postgraduate students of CAAD Chair at Architecture Faculty at Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule (henceforth ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland. In this project a broad variety of possibilities provided by CAD and CAM in architectural design was used, in terms of both the design and production. The paper will present the entire process step by step from its conception to production. Nowadays CAAD technologies seem to dominate not only in visualization and drafting. They have also started to play a more important role in the generation and optimization of the design, which have always traditionally been perceived as the domain of architects. Therefore, the focus in the paper will be placed not only on extensive usage of digital tools, but also on analysis of advantages and difficulties in architect/computer cooperation.

summary Both design researchers and cognitive scientists have developed various process models to study human creative behaviour in design. The models developed are often based on observations of design processes and analysis of design protocols. This research paper reports the-stateof- the-art in the area of cognition models that present design activities in conceptual designing. The research paper investigates the approaches of these cognition models. A new approach of a cognition activity model in conceptual designing is proposed. The new approach used in the introduced model takes into the account factors and activities that are related to the external environment of design (design medium). The external environment has an important role in the cognition activities and the evaluation process in a way that can hardly be ignored or neglected. The presented model of cognition activities in conceptual designing highlights two main factors employed in all the iteration loops of the model, namely: media use and representation. Case studies of architecture students’ designs have been analyzed. The analysis of these case studies helped in forming the proposed model. Various results have been concluded and reported.

summary This research paper proposes an approach to be applied in the design studio. The proposed approach highlights the reciprocal relationship between concept articulation and design problem definition in a design method that exposes different design activities related to this relationship. The design method was applied in a design studio of an intermediate level. The study reports the analysis of student designs in terms of the deign method employed. Moreover, a survey was carried out in order to measure the responses of students and instructors regarding the design method and its approach. The main structure of the design method proposed can be described as follows: although the relationship of concept articulation and design-problem definition are reciprocal, the influence of one direction can be distinguished more than of the other direction on different design activities. The research using qualitative and quantitative methodologies analyzes the results and outputs of the theoretical investigations, the practical application in the design studio, and the questionnaire responses through different methodological tools.

summary In architecture schools, where the ‘studio culture’ lies at the heart of students’ learning, taught courses, particularly technology ones, are often seen as secondary or supplementary units. Successful delivery of such courses, where students can act effectively, be motivated and engaged, is a rather demanding task requiring careful planning and the use of various teaching styles. A recent challenge that faces architecture education today, and subsequently influences the way technology courses are being designed, is the growing trend in practice towards environmentally responsive design and the need for graduates with new skills in sustainable construction and urban ecology (HEFCE’s consultation document, 2005). This article presents the role of innovative simulation modelling tools in the enhancement of the student learning experience and professional development. Reference is made to a teaching practice that has recently been applied at Portsmouth School of Architecture in the United Kingdom and piloted at Deakin University in Australia. The work focuses on the structure and delivery of one of the two main technology units in the second year architecture programme that underwent two main phases of revision during the academic years 2009/10 and 2010/11. The article examines the inclusion of advanced daylight simulation modelling tools in the unit programme, and measures the effectiveness of enhancing its delivery as a key component of the curriculum on the student learning experience. A main objective of the work was to explain whether or not the introduction of a simulation modelling component, and the later improvement of its integration with the course programme and assessment, has contributed to a better learning experience and level of engagement. Student feedback and the grade distribution pattern over the last three academic years were collected and analyzed. The analysis of student feedback on the revised modelling component showed a positive influence on the learning experience and level of satisfaction and engagement. An improvement in student performance was also recorded over the last two academic years and following the implementation of new assessment design.

summary Building Information Modeling (BIM) has the potential to fundamentally alter the way composition, scale and abstraction are addressed in today’s comprehensive design studio by displacing the primacy of abstract conventions of representation with a methodology based on systems thinking and virtual simulation. BIM viewed as provocateur of design education provides great potential for the critical analysis of how architectural design is taught. The design studio project reflects new ways of teaching and addressing BIM methods and processes, and critically evaluating their effects and possibilities on architectural production.

summary This project examines a non-traditional method of construction generated through a digital design process that leverages digital fabrication techniques related to masonry construction. Where as architects’ use of computers first affected shape and structure, it is now additionally affecting material, construction, and craft. This design proposal explores these concepts through the production of a wall using simple configuration and reconfiguration of a repeated module adaptable to differing and unique contexts and site conditions. The masonry module is designed and built through the exploration of a CAD-CAM process. The prototypes produced investigate the repetition of a single module unit, manipulated and interlocked resulting in a continuous surface that is more than just the sum of its individual parts. The material, construction and craft of each unit informs and challenges the entire project to question the making of the masonry module into a wall.

summary This paper discusses the issues involved with the introduction of the storyboard and the animatic in a design studio exercise. Storyboards - sketches used in film planning -, and the animatic - basically a moving storyboard - allow the student to understand space within in the context of a narrative. The purpose of the exercise was to enable the expression of subjectively experienced space in an early stage of urban context analysis. Differently than the traditional approach to animation which results a camera traveling through a path, the exercise approached animation from the perspective of the stories about the place.
