summary Due to the lack of experimentation with wood on a real scale, which is needed to generate design proposals and discuss aesthetic, spatial, and structural alternatives in a multidisciplinary way. An experimental workshop for architecture and engineering students was developed. To integrate design modeling, and fabrication, using the wood steam bending technique. It was explored following a collaborative methodology. The main results obtained included conceptualization sessions, prototyping, physical and digital modeling, and development of work strategies (base plan, scaffolding, production, assembly, iteration, adjustments, and detailing) until the proposal scope met the expectations. From this workshop, remains the challenge of converting empirical knowledge into more precise work parameters. The need to complement the design phases with parametric software modeling, structural analysis, and fabrication methods to open new teaching possibilities was identified.

summary Since some time already, digital reconstructions in architecture, urbanism and archaeology are gradually switching from describing built heritage as a collection of static and unchangeable entities towards more compound and explicit presentation and knowledge management techniques. This includes for instance data management and multimedia systems, immersive environments or semantic information modelling such as GIS (Geospatial Information Systems), BIM (Building Information Modeling) or HBIM (Historic Building Information Modeling). Graphical user interfaces, interaction and usability have become an essential part of produced reconstructions. This shift in terms of dissemination of an architectural and urban heritage that is supposed to increase the social awareness and participation should be structured in a way that enables recipients originating from different backgrounds to grasp information pertaining to almost any knowledge domain, allowing for self-exploration and interpretation of presented knowledge. This paper discusses important nodes of the reconstruction process in the spirit of informative modelling that are characteristic for any possible approach towards conscious heritage representations.

summary Flows systems and network have been interfered the cities’ organization in the last thirty years, affecting its infrastructure, size and people’s concentration. Furthermore, ideas about chaos and fragment are contributing to urban dispersion. Among urban theorists, Rem Koolhaas establishes a set of metaphors when talks about the contemporary city and its architecture. This is analysed by its scale, considering the bigness instead the form-function for to characterizing the generic city. Its architecture is immersed on the congestion culture: he considers the urban dispersion and concentration adding informational technologies as condition metropolitan and sociocultural to produce architecture.

title A framework for generating and evaluating façade designs using a multi-agent system approach

summary Digital design paradigms in architecture have been rooted in representational models which are geometry centered and therefore fail to capture building complexity holistically. Due to a lack of computational design methodologies, existing digital design workflows do little in predicting design performance in the early design stage and in most cases analysis and design optimization are done after a design is fixed. This work proposes a new computational design methodology, intended for use in the area of conceptual design of building design. The proposed methodology is implemented into a multi-agent system design toolkit which facilitates the generation of design alternatives using stochastic algorithms and their evaluation using multiple environmental performance metrics. The method allows the user to probabilistically explore the solution space by modeling the design parameters’ architectural design components (i.e. façade panel) into modular programming blocks (agents) which interact in a bottom-up fashion. Different problem requirements (i.e. level of daylight inside a space, openings) described into agents’ behavior allow for the coupling of data from different engineering fields (environmental design, structural design) into the a priori formation of architectural geometry. In the presented design experiment, a façade panel is modeled into an agent-based fashion and the multi-agent system toolkit is used to generate and evolve alternative façade panel configurations based on environmental parameters (daylight, energy consumption). The designer can develop the façade panel geometry, design behaviors, and performance criteria to evaluate the design alternatives. The toolkit relies on modular and functionally specific programming modules (agents), which provide a platform for façade design exploration by combining existing three-dimensional modeling and analysis software.

summary In modern architecture, construction processes are based on top down planning, yet in nature but also in vernacular architecture, the shape of shelters/nests is the result of evolutionary material processes which takes place without any global coordination or plan. This work presents a framework for exploring how self-organizing structures can be achieved in a bottom up fashion by implementing a swarm of simple robots(bristle bots). The robots are used as a hardware platform and operate in a modular 2D arena filled with differently shaped passive building blocks. The robots push around blocks and their behaviour can be programmed mechanically by changing the geometry of their body. Through physical experimentation and video analysis the relationships between the properties of the emergent patterns (size, temporal stability) and the geometry of the robot/parts are studied. This work couples a set of agent based design tools with a robust robotic system and a set of analysis tools for generating and actualising emergent 2D structures.

summary This paper deals with the topic of agent based design systems and their application in the process of generative design, with the goal of creating a series of volumetric arrangements of varying surface qualities. To test this approach, we created a custom made tool for Agent Based Modelling - Isomorphic Agency - whose design and functionality are described in this paper. Furthermore, we conduct a series of design exercises which combine different parameters, examining the resulting geometries and underlying organizational principles.

Instead, this research program aims to analyse the planning process, not from the point of view of those who want to reconstruct the laws which describe the stile of a particular author but, by trying to understand the “compositive” process, analysing it by reconstructing the project itself, through a dynamic aggregative process of subsequent parts.

summary Construction 4.0 technologies are transforming AEC designs and processes. Metaverses are developing rapidly and are being adopted in various industries as the future of the internet. The metaverse is an augmented world that allows individuals to penetrate and engage. Nevertheless, many people and businesses are still unaware of the potential uses of this technology. Virtual Reality, which is part of the fundamentals of the metaverse convergence with BIM technology, has improved in research and application in the AEC industry. The AEC industry has recently adopted both Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Virtual Reality (VR) as combined tools aiming at increasing collaboration ability among project team members as well as detecting clashes and correcting flaws before construction begins. This presents a multi-collaborative design as a potential requirement for BIM processes in the metaverse. The authors presented a platform that connects multiple VR environments through an online network to create a real-time-shared VR space that supports BIM models in real-time for collaborative design. The BIM-VR environment uses a game engine to create a session where individuals can upload their 3D BIM models in real-time which can be viewed by all users. This study presents that a collaborative environment that supports users and BIM models is the initial step to a BIM-based metaverse in the AEC industry.

summary In contemporary design and construction engineering, Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology significantly influences the evolution of fire safety. This research explores the intersection of fire safety and virtual reality (VR) by introducing an innovative emergency evacuation simulation method grounded in BIM technology. The study aims to establish a robust framework for emergency evacuation simulations by synthesizing fire dynamics, evacuation strategies, and BIM-based VR technologies. By bridging the theoretical-practical gap, the research endeavors to provide stakeholders in the construction industry with a toolset that prioritizes safety while enhancing designs for safer building projects. The study incorporates fire simulation utilizing CFAST, a representative zone model from the Korean National Institute of Standards and Technology. CFAST divides the fire room into high-temperature upper and low-temperature lower layers, assuming a uniform thermal and chemical environment. It interprets fire phenomena through principles such as mass conservation, the first law of thermodynamics, and the ideal gas equation. The study employs Cellular Automata (CA) to design an agent's reaction and behavior for evacuation. This involves creating a model based on CA rules, determining state changes, and designing behaviors accordingly. The study also focuses on formulating a calculation for evacuation time, refining it based on key factors. The integration of CFAST and CA, along with models for fire and evacuation simulations, enhances the accuracy and utility of evacuation simulations. The research introduces computational models and BIM models in a visually immersive experience in VR across 3 types of fire emergency scenarios.

summary The Red Queen Hypothesis is a research project on parasitic architecture, developed as a case study application of knowledge inherited from the fields of stigmergy-based systems, swarm intelligence and Embodied Embedded Cognition. The project aims to provide a possible answer to the increasing demand for the redevelopment of abandoned post-WW2 buildings in northern Italy, proposing an alternative to preservation logics in through strategies based on intrusion, adaptation and growth focusing on the relationships between different systems (host/parasite) and innovative fabrication techniques. Implementing such approach in a non-trivial way entails enabling access to increasing degrees of complexity and self-organization in the computational design approach while keeping the whole process coherent throughout its unfolding. The case study is an abandoned factory in Bergamo (which has become an urban landmark for a socially intricate community) a multi-agent system based parasitism strategy was implemented as design process for its transformation and reuse as spaces for community and cultural expression.

summary Means of expression have always affected our ways of thinking. Designers, who have to interpret signs, languages, and evolution in order to translate into an organised “form” the recurring problems and values of mankind, have left thoughts, projects and wishes to the study of representational techniques. In this way, they have also disclosed a unique view of reality and at the same time a “way of being” towards the meaning of design itself. In the relationship between architecture and representational techniques, Brunelleschi said that “perspicere” was no longer just the science of optics, but also the science that contained the lines of research on geometry and shape that he was the first to exploit in design. Centuries later, in the axonometric representation advocated by De Stijl and intended for factories and industries, the object, shown in all its parts, easy to reconstruct even in the space to which it referred, revealed with extreme clarity the mass-production building and assembly materials and systems. Digital representational media make a great entrance in the heuristic process, invalidate all signs, and promote its quality. The result is an ever-changing, computerised architecture, dominated by curvilinear, wavy shapes that flow from a generative process made of the deformations, additions, and interference of different volumes.

summary PLASM (the Programming Language for Solid Modeling) is a solid-modeling-oriented design language strongly inspired by the functional language FL. In a PLASM environment, every geometrical object is generated by evaluating a suitable language expression which produces a polyhedral solid model. The language adopts a dimension-independent approach to geometry representation and algorithms. The generated objects are always geometrically consistent since the validity of geometry is guaranteed at a syntactical level. In fact (a) each well-formed expression is obtained by proper composition of well-formed subexpressions; (b) the evaluation of a well-formed (and polyhedrally typed) expression produces a valid solid model. In this paper, the representation scheme used in the language is given and some language scripts are shown and discussed.

title Geometric programming: A programming approach to geometric design

summary This article presents a functional programming approach to geometric design with embedded polyhedral complexes. Its main goals are to show the expressive power of the language as well as its usefulness for geometric design. The language, named PLASM (the Programming LAnguage for Solid Modeling), introduces a very high level approach to "constructive" or "generative" modeling. Geometrical objects are generated by evaluating some suitable language expressions. Because generating expressions can be easily combined, the language also extends the standard variational geometry approach by supporting classes of geometric objects with varying topology and shape. The design language PLASM can be roughly considered as a geometry-oriented extension of a subset of the functional language FL. The language takes a dimension-independent approach to geometry representation and algorithms. In particular it implements an algebraic calculus over embedded polyhedra of any dimension. The generated objects are always geometrically consistent because the validity of geometry is guaranteed at a syntactical level. Such an approach allows one to use a representation scheme which is weaker than those usually adopted in solid modelers, thus encompassing a broader geometric domain, which contains solids, surfaces, and wire-frames, as well as higher-dimensional objects.

summary In this paper a software project supporting architectural design is outlined. Such a project aims to develop the new design language PLASM (a Programming Language for Architectural Symbolic Modeling), which is planned to be a very high-level, user-oriented language, belonging to the class of constraint languages. The language PLASM will support a small set of abstract data types which are significant in various outstanding problems of architectural design, and will offer both procedural features and non-procedural constraints satisfaction. It will allow the designer to make use of a large set of computing tools in any phase of architectural design, in order to explore a wider set of design solutions. Customizable evaluation functions will be available in the language. The execution of a PLASM program may result either in generating or in updating a semantic network over a set of data objects solving the geometric problem under consideration. The proposed language will support both abstract data types significant in the design domain, and tools performing automatized data generation and transformations between different data types. The modification of any object in such a system, both performed by editing a daemon program and/or by interactively modifying a data object, will result in the immediate propagation of changes into the problem network, by activating a message passing mechanism.

summary PLASM (Programming LAnguage for Solid Modeling) is a prototype, high level, user oriented, functional design language currently being developed at the University of Rome "La Sapienza". A PLASM "program" is the symbolic definition of a complex of variational polyhedra depending on some unbound variable, and therefore allows for the description of a whole set of geometric solutions to a design problem. In our view the language should be used, possibly with the assistance of a graphical user interface, both in the first steps of the design process as well in the detailed design. In the paper the guide-lines are shown for the preliminary definition of the syntax of the language. The paper also contains the definition of some new and very powerful solid operators.

summary Typical modeling systems for spatial analysis employ data that represent the visual part of a landscape (e.g. relief and morphology), combined with other data about specific attributes (depending on the aims of an application). Thus, in a modeling environment, each place is described by a variety of properties that are not always visible. More of those “hidden” properties require special sensors and/or instruments to be captured and sometimes make their presence evident through human senses, such is sound. The present study takes advantage of wide spread technologies (such as GPS, VHF telecommunications and field sensors) and methodologies that are commonly used in telegeoprocessing – telegeomonitoring in order to simulate an existing acoustic environment. The aim is to acquire real time data about the sound (referenced to a particular area) and manipulate them in a CAD environment with purpose to visualize the sound influence in a specific landscape. Specifically it is proposed a method that transfers spatial data (collected from the field), directly into a modeling system (in the office, or in situ). In sequence the data is processed adequately to feed the modeling system that describes the current sound intensity of a place.

summary The subject of this paper describes a proposal on processes and strategies that a community should inherit towards a collective effort for the improvement of public space, in order to evaluate, preserve or cancel actions towards this scope of their personal, and extended, scenery. This project, within the spectrum of what an era, underlined by (financial) crisis, represents, is an experiment on the active cooperation of the citizens for their own benefit. That affects, amongst others, the social and public management of space, by creating and activating a community’s feeling of “ownership and responsibility” within its neighborhood. It is expected to achieve an intense caring environment both for the public space, and the extended private scenery. Identifying the tools for actions as such, there comes the necessity for them to be able to make the interested parties feel comfortable with the main artifact and challenge them for collaboration. The digital era, the social media power, as well as the need of the individuals towards networking and belonging, shall perform the main attraction to the subject, leading to the creation of a digital tool linking the people actively to the changes they want to see. This paper debates on the development of an application that enables citizens to take part on the well-being of the(ir) public space.

summary Supply Chain (SC) integration has been a long-standing issue. With the advent of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and its influence on inter-organisational relations, SC integration is again highly relevant. This study explores the conditions for SC integration from deploying BIM and SC management (SCM) philosophy. A set of topics from literature, pertinent to BIM and SCM, are confronted with the experiences of experts from the industry during a workshop. The bottom-up BIM initiatives and relational management were deemed more decisive than adhering to top-down BIM policies and operational SCM for managing actors and information and inciting SC integration.
