summary New engineered materials present an excellent opportunity for architects and researchers to reimagine traditionally static building components as dynamic and shape-changing. Bistable materials show two zero energy states and can transition between them with the input of a small force. These engineered materials have yet to be explored for large-scale architectural applications. This study presents a digital workflow for designing a kinetic shading system for facades with bistable laminates. The workflow includes an FEA model that predicts the curved shape of bistable laminates and a digital simulation model that predicts the natural light performance of the resulting kinetic screens. We describe the workflow and demonstrate its use with a case study of a manually operated bistable facade. The study forms part of a larger research agenda to develop kinetic architectural systems using bistable and smart materials.

summary The design process of dynamic architecture has been an emerging topic in recent studies, in which researchers try to find an effective method of generating and controlling adaptive components. In this paper, we present a digital-physical modelling process that seeks to explore tectonic fusion of origami folding patterns and micro-kinetic movements. A flexible modular prototype system is developed and evaluated through combining origami-based fabrication simulation and mathematical characterisation mimicking the pinecone's nastic movements. The modular design system is then applied to an urban site as a test case study. The results show how the pinecone-like nastic movements may be translated into design and fabrication of an adaptive architecture. We discuss the lessons learned from the digital-physical prototyping process finding the balance between geometric flexibility and micro-kinetic adaptability.

summary This paper presents the initial stages of a research that aims to develop hydroactive architectural skin systems that respond to environmental humidity. As part of this study, we have developed wood-based bio-composite materials that are 3D printed with wood filament. Shape-changing behavior is not predictable in advance. We developed customized 3D printing protocols to systematically study shape-changing behavior. The paper presents this systematic material study and the prototypes that we have developed.

summary Building design is a process often divorced from considerations about construction. Digital design methods are increasingly challenging the historic relationship between architecture and its means of production, but this extended reach is not necessarily accompanied by extended understanding or leverage of the production process. We present an urban sculptural project, The Travellers, in which digital techniques resolved critical issues of design, documentation and fabrication, but more importantly facilitated highly beneficial processes of negotiation. We suggest that this case based research has implications for future interactions between designers, makers and managers, shedding additional light onto issues of negotiation, responsibility, risk and trust that are often critical to the pragmatic undertaking of making.

summary Today, material performance is regarded as one of the richest sources of innovation. Accordingly, architecture is shifting to practices by which the computational generation of form is directly driven by material characteristics. At the same time, there is a growing technological means for the varied composition of material, an extension of the digital chain that foregrounds a new need to engage materials at multiple scales within the design process. Recognising that the process of making materials affords perspectives not available with found materials, this paper reports the design and assembly of the fi bre reinforced composite structure Composite Territories, in which the property of bending is activated and varied so as to match solely through material means a desired form. This case study demonstrates how one might extend the geometric model so that it is able to engage and reconcile physical parameters that occur at different scales.

summary This paper introduces concepts and methodologies for multiscale modeling in architecture, and demonstrates their application to support bi-directional information flows in the design of a panelized, thin skinned metal structure. Parameters linked to the incremental sheet forming fabrication process, rigidisation, panelization, and global structural performance are included in this information flow. The term multiscale refers to the decomposition of a design problem into distinct but interdependent models according to scales or frameworks, and to the techniques that support the transfer of information between these models. We describe information flows between the scales of structure, panel element, and material via two mesh-based approaches. The first approach demonstrates the use of adaptive meshing to efficiently and sequentially increase resolution to support structural analysis, panelization, local geometric formation, connectivity, and the calculation of forming strains and material thinning. A second approach shows how dynamically coupling adaptive meshing with a tree structure supports efficient refinement and coarsening of information. The multiscale modeling approaches are substantiated through the production of structures and prototypes.

summary Much of the time of a facility planner, restoration architect or heritage recorder is spent, on site analysing thebuilding and collecting data and measurements. These will be used later to create the reports and drawings that will provide the basis for the subsequent design but these notes and measurements are just the beginning of the long process of drafting the as-found situation. Errors are inevitable in this type of work but, typically they only come to light, back in the office where confirming a measurement may entail an extra trip to the site, and there are times that they only turn up when a contractor encounters problems on the job A software tool, currently under development, addresses this problem by first helping to structure the note taking process so that more consistent data is collected, and then, automatically creating a 2D or 3D CAD model from the resulting database. This can be done on a laptop computer, before the recording team leaves the site so that the model can be compared with reality and faulty or missing measurements corrected. Furthermore, this combination of database and drawing is linked, allowing queries of the data from inside Autocad or the assembly of a specialized model based on a database query. Point collection techniques supported include traditional and not so traditional) hand measurement, total station surveying equipment and interfaces with other software such as rectification and photogrammetric packages. summary Until recently, design teams were constrained by tools and schedule to only be able to generate a few alternatives, and analyze these from just a few perspectives. The rapid emergence of performance-based design, analysis, and optimization tools gives design teams the ability to construct and analyze far larger design spaces more quickly. This creates new opportunities and challenges in the ways we teach and design. Students and professionals now need to learn to formulate and execute design spaces in efficient and effective ways. This paper describes curriculum that was taught in a course “8803 Multidisciplinary Analysis and Optimization” taught by the authors at Schools of Architecture and Building Construction at Georgia Tech in spring 2013. We approach design as a multidisciplinary design space formulation and search process that seeks maximum value. To explore design spaces, student designers need to execute several iterative processes of problem formulation, generate alternative, analyze them, visualize trade space, and address decision-making. The paper first describes students design space exploration experiences, and concludes with our observations of the current challenges and opportunities.

summary In this paper we review the research on multi-agent space planning (MASP) during the period of 2008-2017. By MASP, we refer to space planning (SP) methods based on online mobile agents that map local perceptions to actions in the environment, generating spatial representation. We group two precedents and sixteen recent MASP prototypes into three categories: (1) agents as moving spatial units, (2) agents that occupy a space, and (3) agents that partition a space. In order to compare the prototypes, we identify the occurrence of features in terms of representation, objectives, and control procedures. Upon analysis of occurrences and correlations of features in the types, we present gaps and challenges for future MASP research. We point to the limits of current systems to solve spatial conflicts and to incorporate architectural knowledge. Finally, we suggest that behavioral learning offers a promising path for robust and autonomous MASP systems in the architectural domain.

summary During the eighties the Institute made an extensive inventory of the social housing in the region of Brussels, Belgium. Different information like architectural quality, urban context, social background of the inhabitants, demographic situation of the quarter, technical situation of the building, and so on … were registered in a paper-based publication. Text and photos were all published in a classical way and made available for the different decision makers.

As the inventory was published on paper, it is almost impossible to make fast simulations out of the data available.

summary Preservationists have an impressive array of digital tools to aid them in documentation and analysis of historic structures. The tools range from near photo-realistic renderings to demonstrate what a “restored” building might have looked like at one specifi c time in history to complex chemical analysis of paint chips and pigments to geographic information systems used as management tools for historic prop er ties. Computer-aided design / computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) is set of important digital aids in historic preservation efforts. This paper presents a case study of the use of CAD/CAM in support of an effort to restore a textile block house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. CAD/CAM methods are being employed to help produce a new mold so that new textile blocks can be manufactured that match the existing blocks. An existing textile block mold was digitally scanned, digitally mirrored and edited, and will be fabricated from an aluminum billet to replace a mold that no longer exists. Although seemingly a simple process and well within current technological abilities, the work proved substantially more challenging that initially imagined.

summary The understanding of planning and design as a process of argumentation (of the designer with himself or with others) has led to the concept of IBIS (Issue-Based Information Systems). The elements of IBIS are Issues, each of which are associated with alternative positions. These in turn are associated with arguments which support or object to a given position (or another argument). In the course of the treatment of issues, new issues come up which are treated likewise.

Issue-Based Information Systems are used as a means of widening the coverage of a problem. By encouraging a greater degree of participation, particularly in the earlier phases of the process, the designer is increasing the opportunity that difficulties of his proposed solution, unseen by him, will be discovered by others. Since the problem observed by a designer can always be treated as merely a symptom of another higher-level problem, the argumentative approach also increases the likelyhood that someone will attempt to attack the problem from this point of view. Another desirable characteristic of the Issue-Based Information System is that it helps to make the design process 'transparent'. Transparency here refers tO the ability of observers as well as participants to trace back the process of decision-making.

This paper offers a description of a computer-supported IBIS (written in 'C' using the 'XWindows' user interface), including a discussion of the usefulness of IBIS in design, as well as comments on the role of the computer in IBIS implementation, and related developments in computing.

Designers on Spot: Communication processes and Learning actions This paper introduces some concepts that have been studied at D.O.S. project as part of the learning and communication actions. These concepts are relevant to the project as they brought to the team some improvements about design experiences based on network communication, as well as some reflections done by designers and researchers in different parts of the world. The project proposed by our research group is part of growing demands for experiments able to explore the Advanced Internet for fast transferring large packages of content. The activities are divided in two different instances: one is called exploratory research and aims to identify enrichments that a collaborative practice would add to the design process and to the production of interactive prototypes as well. The other one is related to remote learning strategies. It aims at investigating new methods of collective design and prototyping of objects with integrated media, and the diffusion of these techniques and methods in classroom environments, as a teaching strategy. Following are three different aspects about design experiences. The first one, called communication processes, presents a panoramic view about different ways the participants of a remote design session can share information. It targets to point and to systematize design actions by exploring transversal characteristics among designers, teams and the resulting objects. In order to achieve it, we have to understand some relations between remote communication and design processes, which explore issues in the project phases of conception, production and interaction. This exploration is part of the search for a conceptual scope for the D.O.S. project development, with an emphasis on the communication specificities between remote designers and the design process. The second one, learning action processes, introduces some issues about academic teaching and learning of design through remote and collaborative media. The third one, Virtual Design Studio (VDS), is related to the previous and aims to present a specific kind of remote design sessions targeting to create strategies to use new communication and information technologies (ICT) on remote project instances. The teaching of Architecture and Design is, above all, multidisciplinary – this means that it is not limited to the knowledge of one field of activity but, by a wide range of subjects from different areas - including Computing. The introduction of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) in the project process is commonly associated to the final stages, and not to the creation. The contribution of the digital environment is provided for the use of various software, which are not restricted to those responsible for graphical representation: programs responsible for the organization of data in tables, for example, enable monitoring developments with clarity. The multidisciplinary consideration supports new variables in the process of design, working quickly and accurately on the possibilities, which modifies the agency of decisions and management tasks.

summary This work presents some theoretical reflections about the potentialities of digital tools in the graphic representation of architectonical space. Considering de sub-utilization of these tools in mimetic applications of manual graphic methods, it’ll be taken in Theory of Architecture the argumentations needed to justify the importance of 3D videogames technologies in the architectural graphic representation field. Inserting these reflections in the though line of Bruno Zevi, whom already alerted for the limitations of graphic representation in translating the architectonical space nature, it’s perceived that those technologies are capable to overcome them, offering the biggest qualitative gain in the field since the discover of perspective laws in the Renascence. The presented paper demonstrates an adequate transposition of art solutions (part of tile panels by Athos Bulcao and Maria Keil) into a computational structure where innovative notations are defined in some aspects. To that end, it allows their implementation in the computer through a suitable programming language and uses those same notations to generate other solutions within the same universe of interest and research. Furthermore, an intellectual process is exposed allowing to structure the information, particularly regarding to form, to different frameworks, placing itself as an opportune methodological structure that can guide other similar experiences.

summary This article explores the use of graphical animations in the process of furniture design. The proposals are part of the Kómuniká’tór Project (www.eesc.usp.br/nomads/ kom.htm) that investigates the insertion of media in dwelling furniture. The objective is to describe the process of creation and use of these animations pointing how this methodology has been relevant for visualizing potentials and limitations of the proposals explored in the project. Two consultations through focus groups had been carried through, the first one with potentially users and the second one with professionals of design, communication and architecture domains. The technique of animations appears as a valid method for a first contact between the proposed object with its possible user.
