summary We present our research on the use of immersive stereo- scopic visualisation in interaction with collections of architectural rep- resentations. We investigate the processing and visualisation of multi- ple model representations from architectural datasets. We develop two models for locating collections of datasets in spatial contexts, namely a realistic gallery and a synthetic landscape. We evaluate and report the qualitative interactive experience with two forms of contextual in- teraction within a novel stereoscopic immersive visualisation (cylin- drical projection) environment. The use of immersive stereoscopic visualisation conveys aspects and dimensions of the collections that would not be possible without the forms of contextual interaction, the gallery metaphor and the synthetic landscape to interact with the ar- chitectural collections. The combination of abstract representations with realistic sense of scale and interaction provide the user with an immersive experience to convey the collective form.

summary Generative design formalisms utilise discrete, constructive steps to encode strategies for formal change. In physical design media, the pervasive metaphor for doing design is the direct and continuous manipulation of the developing form. The goal of our investigation is to develop mixed initiative approaches to design exploration. In this paper, we address how constrained manipulation in generative systems can support both discrete and continuous modes of interaction. Massing is a common strategy for processing conceptual notions about three dimensional form. We use massing models of tenth century temple cellas as an example to illustrate an environment for constrained manipulation.

summary Generative design environments need support for human intervention as well as sound computational formalisms. A systematic approach to integrating the two, formal generation and the exploratory, is lacking. In this paper, we posit the possibility of a design support system that combines formal search with user driven exploration. Our approach is to cast the interaction between the user and the generative formalism as agent collaboration in a mixed-initiative environment. We describe the role of interaction and agency in an experimental mixed-initiative design support system, FOLDS and demonstrate its application.

summary The Nâgara tradition of temple building created a rich corpus of Latina (single-spired) temples spread across Northern India between the fifth and thirteenth centuries. Computing methods offer a distinct methodology for reconstructing the genesis and evolution of geometry in this tradition over time. This paper reports a hybrid technique, comprising three distinct computations for recovering and explaining the geometry of temples. The application of the technique enables scholars to bring together fragments of evidence, construe “best-fit” strategies and unearth implicit or hidden relationships. The advantage of this approach is that changes in assumptions and testing of geometric alternatives can be easily simulated from multiple sources of information, such as texts, sacred diagrams and individual temples.

summary VRML offers a high potential for product presentation: Instead of regarding flat, static pictures, configurable and animated 3D models embedded in entertaining environments provide a new way of product presentation. But seriously using VRML for this application domain means facing several challenges. We discuss these issues by using the Virtual Design Exhibition as a showcase. In this exhibition seven interior design companies show products with high aesthetic quality. We discuss how these aesthetics influence the VRML presentation and give some guidelines resulting from our experience. summary Interactive and media-rich digital representations are being increasingly used to offer passages through time and space, a role that was traditionally supported by travels and travelogues, maps, sketches, books and oral histories. In the last two decades, a number of projects have been implemented using digital media with the aim of recording past and extant artefacts and environments. However, the future of such digital past remains as fragile as the memories and moments it tries to capture. There is a need to go beyond creating introverted and closed historical reconstruction projects. This paper surveys significant issues and describes our ongoing work in developing an interpretive, extensible and referential framework toward virtual reconstruction projects.

summary Computational support in the domain of building design is hampered by the need to control generation and search processes both of which are elusive due to the lack of strong domain theories. Case based reasoning paradigm may be useful to overcome some of these difficulties. A case based design system is presented here that enables case adaptation and case combination of design cases to generate new design solutions more efficiently. Some issues in our approach that are different from other projects with similar aims are also discussed.

summary Research projects in computational design typically view digital tools as existing independently of their physical settings. However, what we witness are hybrid spaces of practice, one in which there is an increasing fusion and overlap of physical and digital objects and environments. Instead of focusing on digital tools and information in isolation, this paper argues for the need to conceptualise and experiment with hybrid work environments through combinations of place, time, scale, resolution and other dimensions to develop hybrid spaces of practice. The paper describes experiments with a work environment that consists of multiple displays and representations to motivate and characterise hybrid spaces of physical and digital work environments.

summary The digital design studio has an area of application where conventional media are incapable of being used; collaboration in learning, design and dialogue with people in places other than where one lives. This distinctive opportunity has lead the authors to explore a form of design brief and virtual design studio (VDS) format not well addressed in the literature. Instead of sharing the same design brief, students in this alternative format design a project in the other students' city and do not collaborate on the same design. Collaboration with other students takes the form of teaching each other about the city and culture served by the design. The authors discovered these studios produce a focus on site context that serves our pedagogical objectives – a blend of architectural, landscape architectural and urban design knowledge. Their students use a range of commercial CAD and computer supported collaborative work (CSCW) software common to that used in many VDS experiments reported on in the literature. However, this conventional use of technology is contrasted with a second distinctive characteristic of these studios, the use of custom software tools specifically designed to support synchronous and asynchronous three-dimensional model exchange and linked attribute knowledge. The paper analyzes some of the virtual design studio (VDS) work between the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, the University of Toronto, and the University of Melbourne. The authors articulate a framework of VDS dimensions that structures their teaching and research.

summary This paper describes our experiments with diagrammatic representations to think about design compositions and to learn from shared accretion of design knowledge. We describe here implementation of an online prototype that, on the one hand, offers interactive functionalities to externalize thinking about design compositions in the form of diagrams and, on the other hand, which acts also as a repository of diagrams that can be dynamically interrogated to find other proximate compositional thinking and ideas related to a particular design position. Put differently, the prototype helps both notate design thinking and draw out associations between separately notated design thinking.

summary Computing in architectural design has followed a number of different visions, hopes and research agendas. One of the dominant themes in design Computing seeks to support various activities of 'individual' designers acting within a 'personal' design realm. Parallel to this is another theme which seeks to blend computing aids into normal working environments of groups of designers. The recent interest in and resurgence of collaborative design tools are steps towards what we view as an emerging theme in design computing, namely distributed design environments. This paper describes experiments in collaborative design using computers, and their observations are used to suggest future directions for integrating computing and design in distributed environments.

summary Digital technologies extend, displace or substitute entirely new elements into what has been observed so far in the traditional modes of conception, representation and communication of design. This paper examines various characteristics of digital media and representations, their impacts- constraining and liberating- on modes of conception in design, and possible shifts in design expressions and ways of designing. While much effort invested in research to date has relied upon architecture as conceived, taught and communicated in traditional modes, the use of digital technologies changes those very premises. The import of such characterisation for design computation research is to highlight emerging agendas for future investigation.

summary This paper addresses the use of BIM for code verification and automatic validation of the Architectural Design of Airports (ADA). In Brazil, the evaluation and approval of ADA are carried out by INFRAERO. Currently, designs are evaluated manually, resulting in errors and long evaluation time. To deal with this problem, a conceptual framework for automated ADA assessment with Code Checking is proposed. The method used was Design Science Research, with the proposal of an artifact. The partial results show the importance of establishing protocols for BIM modeling, based on IFC as an important tool for automated assessment with code checking.

summary We describe and analyze the fields of Smart and Nano Materials and their potential impact on architectural design and building fabrication. Distinguishing Smart and Nano materials, Smart Materials perform both sensing and actuating operations, whereas many Nano materials are capable of self-assembly. In general, Smart and Nano materials can perform like living systems, simulating human skin, the body’s muscles, a leaf’s chlorophyll and self-regeneration. Recognizing that the traditional partition between Materials Science and Architecture is obsolete, our intent is to show how these two fields are intrinsically connected, while growing evermore symbiotic as we progress into the futureKeeping the designer in mind, our paper begins with the question: “What Nano and Smart materials can be used in future architectural designs?” Outlining what such materials might mean for architectural fabrication and design, we claim that Smart and Nano Materials can imitate living organisms. Effective implementation of these materials will therefore allow designed spaces to operate as active organs within a larger dynamic organism, synthesizing both expressive intent and pragmatic considerations. This paper is a collaboration between an architect and a materials scientist on the future of materials and their influence in architecture. By giving examples of work already underway we intend to illustrate and suggest directions ranging from the functional to the expressive, from tectonics to morphology. We conclude with a reflection on the importance of future research between our two areas of knowledge.

summary Where we do we make our “being?” Since our existence [being-there = Dasein] is the original place of intelligibility, fundamental ontology must clarify the conditions of having any understanding which itself belongs to the entity called Dasein. Today Dasein in increasing becoming more and more digital, in fact all activity is digital or becoming digital in one mode or another, it’s ubiquitous! On the pragmatic side corporate architecture as well as its daily interaction and transaction are all digital. With the advent of games as well as webmasters using VRML or some equivalent of it posses the questions and concerns as who will design the digital domains, graphic artists, IT personnel, game developers and where will we make our being? As architects and designers where will our “digital gesamtkunstwerk” be? Making places for human inhabitation in a nonphysical space raises interesting questions concerning presence, authenticity, adaptability, orientation, and suspension of disbelief. What kind of activities can be supported by nonphysical spaces? What will it take to support them in a socially and psychologically appropriate manner? And WHO will design them? On the applied side this ontological view is demonstrated in an Interior Design Corporate Office Design Studio that has been taught for a decade wherein students are required to develop an ECommerce, a business deemed to succeed including the Corporate Office, facility program, space planning, corporate image, interiors, graphics, webpage, and logo. The semester project has one unique design stipulation: The one major design requirement is that the “feel” of the reception has the same “feel” as the website. A phenomenological sameness…all work is accomplished with a plethora of digital media. This design process is still in its infancy.
