summary This article aims to demonstrate how a theoretical-didactic model and its respective teaching strategies for algorithmic-parametric logic can act as potential elements of innovation in the architectural design process. Based on the theories of parametric design thinking by Oxman (2017) and the studies by Woodbury (2010) and Romcy (2017), such strategies are based on the principle that algorithmic logic can be understood, in certain circumstances, as a procedural framework and not just an instrumental one. It will also be discussed how the situation of remote learning in the face of the COVID-19 crisis brought about the use of virtual teaching tools as an increment of the learning process.

title Behavior Modeling in Design System Development

summary We describe the development approach for a software environment to support the early phases in building design called SEED. The combination of capabilities offered by SEED to designers is novel and includes the integrated handling of solution prototypes. We give the reasons for using an object-oriented software engineering approach in the development of the system, which starts with a comprehensive behavioral model of the system from the user's perspective based on actors and use cases. We illustrate results from the first development phase and sketch the next phases. At the time of the CAAD Futures '93 conference, we will be able to report our experience in developing a first system prototype and to demonstrate the prototype.

summary We focus on portions of the constructive geometry of early Hindu temple cellas from western India, the use of massing technologies in SEED-Config, a rule based generative modeller and the spaces of cella designs engendered by such descriptions. We introduce the basic cella form and present two technology sets in detail, Anga and Sikhara, based on canonical geometric relations in two dimensions and demonstrate the use of these relations in three dimensions. Finally, we propose research directions and draw lessons from our experience in the writing of domain specific descriptions.

summary Design space explorers are information-rich environments conceived for providing effective support for electronic design processes. A subsumption-based design space structures the partial designs in the environment by a relation of information specificity. It provides formal exploration operators for predictive, goal-directed movement in the underlying space of designs and an interaction model for open-ended exploration. This paper focusses on the forward moving operator based on incremental pi-resolution and discusses the topic of information removal through the erasure operator. It describes the possible usage of these operators and the entry points for mixed-initiative human-computer interaction in the SEED-Config explorer .

summary Play and design can be put into metaphorical relation. To do so is to let each inform the other. As part of a larger project, we have used the metaphor of play in creating and using learning resources for early design education. In doing so, it became apparent that the entailments of play, the other metaphors that both frame and are framed by play, needs to be better understood. We discuss seven metaphors related to play: games, exploration, balance of forces, tactility, intrinsic reward, embodiment and rules and how we use these in learning games.

summary For several years we have been using the metaphor of play to conceive and deliver our design teaching. We report here results of a qualitative evaluation study on the effectiveness of our approach. We used both a participant observer methodology and a formal survey to gather and interpret data from the classroom. The results show tentative support for a positive role for play in early design education and several insights into how to build play into the design classroom.

summary As part of a nationally funded project, we have developed and used “games” as studentcentred teaching resources to enrich the capacity for design in beginning students in architecture, landscape architecture and urban design. Students are encouraged to learn inter-actively in a milieu characterised by self-directed play in a low-risk computermodelling environment. Recently thirteen upper year design students, six from Adelaide University (Adelaide, South Australia, Australia), five from Deakin University (Geelong, Victoria, Australia), and two from Victoria University, (Wellington, New Zealand) were commissioned over a ten-week period of the 2000-2001 Australian summer to construct a new series of games. This paper discusses the process behind constructing these games. This paper discusses six topical areas: – what is a game; – specific goals of the summer games; – the structure of a game; – the game-making process; – key findings from the production unit; and – future directions.

summary An approach to the integration of geometric information in knowledge based CAD systems is described as an architecture for geometric reasoning. The general requirements for this integration arise from the need for rich geometry representations in engineering domains and the conflicting demands of current geometric modelling and knowledge based systems. Four concepts are used as a basis: (1) Classes of spatial sets, which act by inheritance as a means for incremental definition by specialization; (2) features, which denote evaluated portions of a geometric model; (3) abstractions, which provide partial representations of geometric objects; and (4) constraints through which spatial relationships are expressed. These four concepts combine in a synergistic manner to define the complete architecture. A prototype implementation of the architecture, built using object oriented programming techniques and a boundary based solid modeler, has been achieved and demonstrated. In this paper each of the concepts and their integration into a whole are described

summary We have developed several deep cases based on actual and hypothetical built environments and have used these in a strongly student-centred instructional style. On reflection, our approach seems qualitatively different from norms in architecture schools and from other case-based learning practices. summary Online communities use a “wall” as a place to articulate non - synchronic communication among its members. Such a place, however, poorly explores the metaphor of the wall as a means of enhancing online experiences. Online “walls” do not explore or challenge the richness of a real wall, and they do not embrace new experiences that are only possible in the digital world. In order to tackle these issues, this paper analyzes three movie scenes where the everyday perception of the wall is altered by madness and estrangement. Finally, the paper suggests how these perceptions of the wall could be integrated into interfaces using touch screen technologies.

We describe the professional challenges that the KPF Cloud Tools platform solves, document the technical implementation of the platform, and illustrate its benefit through the impact on a large architectural practice.

summary When working with parametric models, architects typically focus on using rather structuring them (Woodbury, 2010). As a result, increasing design complexity typically means a convoluted parametric model, amplifying known problems: 'hard to understand, modify, share and reuse' (Smith 2007; Davis 2011). This practice is in contrast with conventional software-programming where programmers are known to meticulously document and structure their code with versioning tool. In this paper, we argue that versioning tools could help to manage parametric modelling complexity, as it has been showing with software counterparts. Four key features of version control: committing, differentiating, branching, and merging, and how they could be implemented in a parametric design practice are discussed. Initial user test sessions with 5 student designers using GHShot Grasshopper version control plugin (Cristie and Joyce 2018, 2017) revealed that the plugin is useful to record and overview design progression, share model, and provide a fallback mechanism.

title ViSA: A Parametric Design Modeling Method to Enhance Visual Sensitivity Control and Analysis

summary The ability of parametric computer-aided design systems to generate models rapidly enables designers to explore the downstream impacts of changes to key design parameters. However, the typical modeling functions provided in the parametric systems can become insufficient when such exploration is needed for increasingly complex parametric design models. Main challenges for exploration that we observed are control and analysis of changes on the design model and in particular, when they are introduced continuously. The system interfaces and the human-visual perception system alleviate these challenges. In this study, we demonstrate ViSA, a Visual Sensitivity Analysis method that aims to make the effects of change within a parametric model controllable, measurable and apparent for designers. The approach aims to improve visually analyzing the sensitivity of a design model to planned parametric changes. The method proposes customizable control and visualization features in the model that are decoupled from each other at the design level, while providing interfaces between them through parametric associations. We present findings from our case studies in addition to the results of a user study demonstrating the applicability and limitations of the proposed method.

summary The instrumental and aesthetic implications of architecture’s engagement with science and technology has a long history, part of which includes the period following the Second World War when the rapid technological advances of the Industrial Revolution merged with a general cultural mindset characterized by themes of progress and futurism. For postwar thinkers like Reyner Banham, this interest in a futurist architecture suggested an approach to design rooted less in architectural precedent than technological extrapolation. While a precedent based approach might be viewed as more disciplinary in nature, technological extrapolation suggests an inclination towards interdisciplinarity. Thus, Banham’s concept of extrapolation encouraged architects to look beyond the limits of their own discipline as a means of discovering new forms of knowledge and expertise. Indeed Banham was engaged in taking stock of the technological advances particular to his time while simultaneously anticipating the implication of these advancements for the future. To this extent, the postwar period and its inherent futurism provides a useful and poignant lens through which to take stock of our own technological climate. Given the equally revolutionary advances in computer technology in the last twenty years, our contemporary moment can be seen as having many parallels with the postwar period, and not unlike the postwar generation of architects and thinkers, contemporary designers are inevitably faced with the challenge of engaging new technological advances and their implications for architecture. In our current age of digital and biological technologies, these advances are both rapid and widespread, and include LED and fiber-optic lighting systems, motion sensing, interface design, solar tracking photovoltaic skins and wind harnessing technologies, magnetic levitation, and robotics. This paper begins with an examination of design work and criticism from the postwar period and proceeds to utilize that examination as an historical framework for addressing issues of contemporary design and 21st Century technological advancement.
