summary Methods for parametric design and virtual modeling have reached a remarkable degree of development, but their separation from real construction is increasing. Fuller's Dymaxion Bathroom failed, around 1930, due to union opposition. The restaurant Georges (Paris, 2000) designed by MacFarlante and Jakob had to be built, like other recent projects, by a boat manufacturing company. We are at an unprecedented crossroads. It is proposed that part of the current research design would be redirected, although it seems unfeasible, to the reorganization of the construction industry.

summary The work we present may be considered as the consolidation of a methodology that was already outlined in the paper presented in the second M&D congress held in San Sebastian (1998). We establish that, in architectural design, the computer is only used in the last step in order to achieve the traditional Euclidean design in a more precise and comfortable way and to improve the quality of the handmade designs. Our proposal consists in modifying the process from the very beginning of the creative act. That is, when the design conception is born. If we want to obtain the maximum benefit of the computer possibilities, we ought to support this conception by means of a language tuned with the mentioned tool. Due to the fact that the internal language used by the computer for producing graphics is mathematical, we must incorporate, in some way, this language in the codification of the creative process. In accordance with this setting, we propose a mathematical grammar for the design based on the construction of modulated standard mathematical functions. This grammar is developed independently from the graphical software and it is specified only when a particular computer program for the effective generation on the graphical objects is selected.

summary The development of the architectural project is conditioned and determined by the design process, in which the operative modalities have big influence. That is why we can dare say, that the use of digital media and new information technologies in the architectural design process open the way to a “new architecture”, an architecture that represents the Contemporary Imagination. A change has taken place in the traditional patterns of Architecture, from the way of thinking and conceiving a project to its representation and later materialization. This “Contemporary Architecture”, founded in the circumstances of contemporary society, is represented by three main architectural consequences: 1. The expansion of the Spatial Imagination; 2. The break regarding a lineal or hierarchical design process; 3. The introduction of different disciplines to the design process, relating the design immediately with its realization. summary The pedagogic approach in the architectural field is suffering a deep change taking in consideration the impact that has been produced mainly by the CAD and multimedia procedures. An additional view to be taken in consideration is the challenge produced by the influence of advanced IT which since 1990-92, has affected positively the exchange of information among people of the academic environment. Several studies confirm this hypothesis, from the wide cultural spectrum when the digitalization process was emerging as an alternative way to data processing (Bateson 1976) to the pedagogical-computational side analyzed by (Papert 1996). One of the main characteristics indicated by S. Papert (op.cit) is the idea of "self teaching" which students are used everywhere due to the constant augment of "friendly" software and the decreasing costs of hardware. Another consequences to point out by S. Paper (op.cit) is that will be more probably that students at home will have more actualized equipment that most of the computer lab. of schools in general. Therefore, the main hypothesis of this paper is, "if we are able to combine usual tutorials design methods with the concept of "self-teaching" regarding the paradigmatic architectural models that are used in practically all the schools of architecture (Le Corbusier, F.L.Wright, M.v. der Rohe, M.Botta, T.Ando, etc.) using a Web site available to everybody, what we are doing is expanding the existing knowledge in the libraries and fulfill the future requirements of the newly generations of students".

summary In this paper we want to develop some conceptual reflections of the processes of virtualization procedures with the aim to indicate a series of misfits and mutations as byproducts of the “digital-graphic culture” (DGC) when we are dealing with the perception of the “digital space”. Considering the present situation, a bit chaotic from a pedagogical point of view, we also want to propose a set of “virtual space parameters” in order to organize in a systemic way the teaching procedures of architectural design when using digital technology. Nowadays there is a great variety of computer graphics applications comprising practically all the fields of “science & technology”, “architecture, design & urbanism”, “video & film”, “sound” and the massive amount of information technology protocols. This fact obliges us to have an overall view about the meaning of “the new reality through virtuality”. The paper is divided in two sections and one appendix. In the first section we recognise the relationships among the sensory apparatus, the cognitive structures of perception and the cultural models involved in the process of understanding the reality. In the second section, as architects, we use to have “a global set of social and technical responsabilities” to organize the physical space, but now we must also be able to organize the “virtual space” obtained from a multidimensional set of computer simulations. There are certain features that can be used as “sensory parameters” when we are dealing with architectural design in the “virtual world”, taking into consideration the differences between “immersive virtual reality” and “non inmersive virtual reality”. In the appendix we present a summary of some conclusions based on a set of pedagogical applications analysing the positive and the negative consequences of working exclusively in a “virtual world”.

summary Globalization is a multidimensional process which impregnates all the facts and events of our present culture and, as a by-product of this situation, there is a set of complex relationships where "intuitive behavior plus knowledge and information technology" are central issues of the new pedagogic procedures of our times. In this paper we assume by "knowledge" the data obtained from a set of relationships oriented towards the "heuristic approach" from the point of view of "qualitative analysis" concepts (Muhr 91). Our main "provisional hypothesis" is to use this methodology to control the analysis-synthesis process as a continuous procedure during the design stages . One particular aspect of this view is going through the "informatic culture phenomena" which is the base of the present "turning point" of design procedures in most architectural and design schools around the world. This paper discusses how "media" is affecting the "design process" regarding three aspects: the conceptual, the instrumental and the representational one. These aspects are also affecting the cultural models and creating new paradigms in the way new design methodologies combine "heuristics procedures" with the growing set of computer graphics parameters.

summary The proposal of “Urbamedia” is to undertake the development of a 3D virtual and interactive model of an historical area of the city of Buenos Aires. The selected zone is the “Mayo Avenue” including the “Mayo Square”; this project is financed by the National Agency of Scientific and Technological Development of Argentina and the University of Buenos Aires.We are presenting and experimental model of the “Mayo Square” that has been developed at ABACUS, Department of Architecture & Building Aids Computer Unit, University of Strathclyde UK. We are also looking to include histórical areas of three cities (Mar del Plata, Rosario and Santa Fe) and eventually other cities from Latin América. Due that ABACUS has a strong experience in city modelling plus the powerful software and hardware used there, we must develop a VRML customized menu to be adapted to our low cost PC equipment. The 3D model will be used mainly in urban design simulation procedures and the idea is to extend to other type of simulationsof the environmental parameters.

summary Throughout these pages are made known the persons, the projects and the books that have influenced my actions and that they will be mentioned in form underlined in this paper. I have to emphasize that since 1965 to 1970, and in the continuous search that I was accomplishing to find data and bibliography adapted to the topic of computer graphics, only two series of publications contained topics related to this matter at that time: one was the IBM Journal and the other series was the communications of the ACM. The purpose of this work is to make known an experience accomplished throughout 30 years of intense activity in finding new methods of drawing and design, based on the use of digital computers, mainly in Argentina, and during certain periods of time in Great Britain and since 1971 during short visits to the United States and also in France. The first idea emerged in the year 1965 when I was assistant teacher at the School of Architecture of the University of Buenos Aires, as a combination of ideas between the concepts of spatial geometry and the current morphological studies that we taught in the Course of professor Gaston Breyer. However the idea of automatic drawing emerged observing the operation of the first scientific digital computer installed in the Computing Institute of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires in 1963 (Sadosky 1963). At the beginning, the approach to the computer were not accomplished from a strictly scientific point of view, but it was implying a kind of "sincresis" (Koheler 1940) it is more than a synthesis, because I was tried to combine ideas that have had its origin in different worlds of thinking, the analogous world and the digital world, and this situation was very difficult to accept at that time.The designing procedures in the decade 1960's was deeply rooted (and still continues) in the architectural design field as a result of a drawing process based in heuristic techniques.

Recently, researchers in the humanities have got interested in producing visualizations to synthesize facts and trends. The purpose is to create novel observations and analysis of historical and cultural data. This paper presents the use of programming and markup languages to design a custom and open tool for the creation of one particular type of historical data visualization: chronologies.

summary This research compared CAD and BIM, seeking to identify evolution, or revolution, in the field of building projects, focusing on municipal approval. The research sought to understand municipal, state and federal normative to approve architectural projects and studied CAD and BIM in the light of the technical documents generation submitted for building projects evaluation and approval. The aim was to compare the efficiency of 3D model for the analysis of projects in municipalities. The results identify adequacies and inadequacies on both platforms, but also formulate suggestions for improvements in the process of evaluation and approval of projects by local governments.

summary The use of parametric modeling in architectural design processes has made possible the creation of novel complex-shaped projects, but also launched new materialization challenges. This hard task addressed to a relevant need to comprehend the impact of constructibility on parametric design teaching. We analyzed how multicultural collaborative teams of students introduced construction constraints in parametric design processes, in an European architecture school. The method consisted of two design experiments with architecture students who designed a pavilion, starting from constraints such as time, material and pre-existences. The results addressed that the introduction of construction constraints since the early conceptual design stages conditioned the architectural shape, but also optimized time, decreased rework, and helped on decision-making. Despite the multiculturality, the students' lack of knowledge in construction methods indicated a high need for integration with engineering students and industry partners since graduation.

summary This study is concerned with the formulation of solutions for urban problems. It departs from Alexander’s pattern language theory and urban design guidelines, to create a system for generating specifications or the ingredients of a plan, given a scale, a site and a community. It takes into account strategies, regulations, guidelines, physical features of the site, and furthermore, the social, cultural and economic characteristics of the population. This system, sorted by a sequence of events, through stages, categories, methods and agents, describes taxonomic levels and their inner relations. Such an ontology provides a pattern encoding structure towards a computational model within the capabilities provided by the spatial data modeling of GIS (GIS-O). The urban formulation model is conceived to increase qualitative inputs, reducing ambiguities, through a flexible while automate process applied to urban planning.
